I was glad to hear that you don’t do hot foil or better press. I do not do them either. This rabbit hole can really be deep and get you into $ trouble if you are not careful. I decided just like you to concentrate on what I do like, and not be “encouraged” to buy every new gadget or technique. I am trying to downsize my “stuff” throughout my house. It really makes me feel lighter and less burdened. I go through my craft room once every six months and I always find things I don’t need. Thanks for your video, very informative!

My favorite splurge was buying an Empress electric die cutting machine. I also later bought a set of extra large plates, and mini plates. It can cut a full letter size sheet and its system uses a magnetic sheet as part of the sandwich. I’ve had my machine for 2 1/2 - 3 years, and only had to buy another set of cutting plates because they were scratched but have never had warping issues. I love the rotating platform idea you use with your Gemini jr , need to do that tip! I do have a glimmer and better press, which I use with my Spellbinders platinum 6. I like to do batch card making, and the better press makes quick cards, and I snagged the glimmer on sale. I also have several stamping platforms - when batch making I can set up the focal stamp on one, sentiment (or for layering stamps, the next layer) on the other without needing to clean off the platform in between. The final splurge is the full sized Tim Holtz glass mat, having one surface that I can do any technique on, clean easily, with room to lay out pieces is great! I had a cricut but never got into it, so sold it to a friend.

I made my own turntable for my full sized Gemini with a thick plastic cutting board and a plastic lazy Susan from the dollar store. It works exactly like what you have and accommodates the entire base of my machine.

Good paper cutters were one of my splurges. I lucked out with my Fiskars ProCision Rotary Bypass Trimmer. They usually cost about $140, but I found mine on clearance at Hobby Lobby for 75% off! That thing can cut through cardboard, magnet sheets, multiple layers of cardstock... Worth it, even at full price. I bought a Tim Holtz guillotine trimmer, too. It's great.
My mini MISTI was a splurge. I do wish I'd bought the regular size, as I wouldn't have then spent on other stamp positioners that could handle larger stamps and projects.
I bought a light box for photos. It didnt cost all that much, so I don't know if it's a splurge, but it's sort of an unnecessary extra. I'm not a great photographer, and my photos of cards never looked good, as I can't figure out lighting. The light box has made a world of difference in my photos!

I have learned, I love watching your intricate designs and I still might get the penguin palace stencil thing but I realize I don’t have the patience you do. I forgot to mention I've definitely splurged on Caran D'Ache Luminance pencils. They make me look like I know what I'm doing when I color with pencils. They're a little over-the-top for hobby use, but they're so wonderful to color with!

Ardyth, as always you are so inspirational and a true joy to watch. Thank you for sharing this.
I could watch you all day long but I would get nothing done! lol
I too bought a scan n cut and haven't even touched the surface yet of what I know I can and will be doing with it. I bought the SDX85 last year and the little bit I got to use it, I love it so much that I found a girl local that had an SDX125 that she got as a gift (she doesn't craft) and sold it to me for $125 (new it is $499.) it has a little bit bigger screen, more add ons that were included. So I now I will probably sell the SDX85!
I also have a commercial cutter from when I had a vinyl cutting business and haven't sold it because it is a wide carriage table top model and thought I may use it from time to time. BUT, since the Scan n Cuts, most times I don't even remember I have a cutter. Will probably sell it soon.
BTW, I have a Dahle rotary cutter that I bought back in 2005. I am trying to find a way to contact them because when we moved the sliding paper guide got lost and has never been found. I want to see if I can buy a replacement.

My biggest splurge is Scan N Cut I absolutely love it and use it often. I love designing stuff in Canvas Workspace and then let the machine cut it out. It's also saved me a lot of money as I don't need to buy many dies. Plus, it does so much more for making my card making easier.

Hi Ardyth, great video again. My biggest splurge is my Sizzix Switch, my glassmat and my Tim Holtz trimmer. And I followed your advise not to buy everything I like, but really what kind of cards you like to make. Unfortunately the critters are to adorable to me. So I fall in that trap sometimes. What I did is I buy once a year a ticket to the Concord and 9th summercamp, I really love that, the atmosphere and the products you get with that. So that are my products for the year and I try not to buy anything else, only paper, or glue. And I am proud for resisting the glimmermachine and the spellbinder stamping system with the hard plates. That will save a lot of space and money! So no temptation there. See you Next week! ;-)

Oh my glass mat! I forgot about that! Yes, another good splurge! And keeping a budget for events like summer camp is smart too! My worst shopping habit is 'since I've got what I want in my cart, I should look and see what else I can buy'. I think that arises from hating to pay for shipping! lol! Thanks for watching, Nicolle!

Some of my priciest splurges have been 300 ct German watercolor pencils in a cherry wood case. W/o the case I would have saved $80. I worked at a stamping store in CA & took my salary in product. I also got a 50% discount on them. 20 yrs ago I also got a professional deckle cutter. Almost $200 & the only thing it does is cut deckle edges. It’s steel & VERY well made. I justified my purchases b/c I worked for a few stamp manufacturers. I developed stamps & classes. I also did their sample cards & taught class throughout CA, TX & NC.

Another great video! From someone who did purchase the cheap blending brushes from Amazon there is a difference. My top three issues with the cheap Amazon brushes. (1) They soak up a lot more ink than my Simon, Altenew, Waffle Flower, or Spellbinder brushes. I could never find that Goldilocks saturation. There was always either too little or too much ink on the bristles. (2) Blotchy, inconsistent results. I had to not so gently smoosh the ink into the brush and tap off before every pass. Every single pass. Even still, my panel would usually be marred with ink stains and blotches. I also found it very challenging to get an even blend. My final panel would usually end up darker than I wanted because I had to even out areas. (3) I could never achieve very pale or light backgrounds. Especially the technique where the color fades into the white of the cardstock.
For the longest time I thought I simply stunk at ink blending. My first Spellbinder, Altenew and Waffle Flower brushes were a revelation. Turns out I CAN ink blend like a boss. Yep, even super light washes that fade to white. I just needed the right tools! For me, blending brushes from reputable craft companies are worth every penny. The silver lining to my Amazon purchase: I discovered that I don't need dozens of brushes for every conceivable color or separate brushes for every ink brand. Also, turns out that I prefer different bristle styles and shapes for different jobs. That's allowed me to be more strategic with replacements focusing more on size, style, and shape.

    • @ardyth

I’m with you on the printer. On the advice of a crafty friend, I purchased an expensive Rotatrim paper cutter. I have never looked back. Such a great investment for a card maker. I’m also one who is avoiding the betterpress/glimmer trend. They make beautiful things, but I just don’t think that is a direction I need to go at this point in time. But I have good guillotine trimmers, large and small, and several Fiskars trimmers with the slider blade- so I’m good I guess… I did recently get the My Sweet Petunia glue press and quite happy with it, especially with delicate die cuts.
Thanks for another informative video- much appreciated!

Ardyth, the tools you listed on your “decided not buy list” are identical to my “ don’t go there” list. That said, I would really like to create my own sentiments. I find that most of the sentiments on stamp bundles don’t reflect the ways in which I like to communicate on a card. I believe the Cricut Joy is the machine but need to do more research. What stops me is the learning curve and the limitations on my craft storage space. Haven’t 💯 % ruled it out…. yet!

Getting several sets of Catherine Pooler mini ink pads and all of their refills (on big sale!) might have been one of my best splurges. When I see other pretty inks I can remind myself that I have all these lovely colors and the ability to blend them to make more colors, and the small size pads fit into my crafty desk drawer very well and are so cute. I splurged a little on basics too, like a good trimmer and stamp platform, but I try not to get sucked into all the gadgets - I just don’t have the space and tbh my favorite cards use patterned paper and die cuts with just a little stamping.

My Big splurges were probably my 200.00 paper cutter (which my friends who don’t think it’s worth it to spend that kind of money on a paper cutter drool over) and my Cricut! I love them both and use frequently. I do teach in my home so it makes a LOT of sense to have to right tools for the job! I admit I don’t have a lot of willpower when it comes to a new tool, but I probably use my craft room on a daily basis, so it doesn’t pay to have equipment that doesn’t hold up! Ah, the beauty of some Tim Holtz alphanumeric sets. Sometimes pricey but I love having 3 or 4 e's, n's, etc. I haven't jumped on the BetterPress wagon, however, I do have a hot foil machine that I love AND I have bought a couple of BetterPress plates to use in it. It do have multiple splurge items, my rotary trimmer being one. The beauty of being able to cut chipboard effortlessly is indescribable. I wouldn't trade my Switch for anything. I, too, didn't think an electric die cutting machine was necessary but I couldn't resist the Switch due to it's size and the fact that my Big Shot Pro developed a "soft" spot on the rollers that was driving me crazy. I was forever trying to figure out how many shims to use. I do still use the other manual machines I have but mostly for small cutting. This was a great overview. Hello Ardyth,
I am a new crafter, and I started about seven months ago. I splurged on a MISTI, Spellbinder Platinum Six, and all the Distress Oxide Inks. Before that, I had bought a Cricut Joy and Brother Scan N Cut for making stickers to donate, but I don't use them often because I am still learning how to use the software. Even though I feel tempted to buy many things, I can't do so because I don't have enough space and I am not sure if I would use them. Instead, I prefer to spend my money on stencils and 3D embossing folders.

All those tools are great if it's your job or you sell cards. I bought Gemini Jr but barely use it because it has dozens of plates that you have to look up which one to use every time. But I love the "lazy Susan under it. I love Genini Midi the best because it doesn't need any plates, only one folder, and just one shim. But then there is a problem - it warps after just a few uses and embossing folders get ruined. So, I still stick to my Sizzicks.

The green plate is an extra. It's called something like 'cutting plate for double-sided die-cutting/ (which I have never figured out by the way, it just acts as a shim. You could use trial and error to figure out a cardstock shim that would also work. You just don't want the i-crafter plate right up against the rollers of the gemini jr, because it has a self-healing coating that can be damaged by the rollers. I hope that all makes sense. @@tinadaniels3965 if I ever need a shim, I tend to start with a piece of cardstock. if that's not enough, I try 2! lol! Not very high tech, I know. I have a mixture of plates including some old sizzix plates from when I had a big shot. They are slightly thinner than Gemini cutting plates, so that gives me options when I'm trying to find the exact right thickness. It's hard - especially with embossing folders - they're all different thicknesses, I find!
