Problem with German forces is that politically they don't have a lot of support from the German government. In Afghanistan, Norwegian special forces on several occations had to step in and take over missions, because politically Germany struggles with it's nazi past and it's politicians don't really want to get their soldiers into combat. Germany's soldiers are restrained that way. Very good soldiers, but held back by history.

The Germans never called the 20 Years in Afghanistan a "War", it was always just a "Peace- or Stabilization Mission" in the politicians' Mouths, which is why there were no Leopard Battle Tanks. With the war in Ukraine, the View and Respect of the Military by political Eyes is slowly changing.

No shouting at the trainees, no motivational Drill Sergants standing by just the KSK Instructors walking aside the trainees and giving them bold instructions. Its a psychological and physiological challenge cause you never know when its over until its over. Also the german forces especially the special forces are held back by political idiocy cause of the fear of Germanys historical role since WW2...

The old training in the KSK was basically a mix of what Germany learned from the SAS (with which they trained a lot in the beginning) and the advanced infantry training of the Bundeswehr the so called Jagdkampf (Defence in depth) and Einzelkämpferlehrgang (the old "German commando course) which was the requirement for Fallschirmjäger (Paratroopers), Gebirgsjäger (Mountaineers) Jäger (similar skill set as Rangers) and Panzergrenadier (Armoured Infantry units) units and added lessons from the Fernspäher (Long Range Recon) and Kampfschwimmer (German Commando Frogmen) units. All those types of experience went into the qualification and later KSK training course.
That was 1996 and 90% of the first KSK soldiers came from above mentioned units.
Meanwhile the Bundeswehr changed a lot of that and the KSK is a bit more specialized inside while the old units are now running under the name "EGB Forces (Specialized Army Forces with Expanded Capabilities)"
The "Defence in Depth" and "German Commando Course I (and II)" are still necessary for NCO and officer ranks and most of the infantry units - and Air Force and Army pilots.

I myself am German and come from a family with a long tradition of military service going back to the Franco-Prussian War. My uncles used to tell me that when they did their mandatory military service, they would still on occasion be hit by superiors in basic or woken up by the loud bang of a metal trash can thrown into the barrack room before morning roll call. It has of course become much more humane and quiet since. Reforms of the past years have even, at least officially, banned the instructors from shouting at recruits and some may percieve this as the military softening up as not to scare away recruits and create a lack of soldiers in an entirely voluntary army without the reliably large amount of draftees every year. But how I believe this short documentary has splendidly shown, the sobriety and calmness of an instructors face with an expression that says "I've been there and done that" allthewhile fairly politely ordering the soldiers to execute feats bordering on cruelty as if it were a walk in the park can psychologically be equally effective and is, at least in my humble opinion, much closer to the German cultural identity. But of course I must agree with the 'old heads' in the sense that new soldiers must be familiarised with a certain degree of agression to properly prepare them for all eventualities of military life, which at last, remains the battlefield.

It's good to see that there are more families with such a tradition. I know this tradition of military services in the family, too. We could look back in our family history for about six generations (before this time we couldn't find any records or data), and in every Generation we has someody in duty. I had my 12 years too, and I got the luck to become an Drill Instructor most of the times, also during the time when the model of leading was "renewed". In my opinion it was not bad, because most Instructors already knew that there are times for being loud and times for being calm. It always depends on the situation and what we wanted to bring to the minds of our recruits or experienced comrads. I also can't remember that we had a feeling like a need for constant yelling at any time, like the US-Instructors I knew seemed to have.

@@GainsDorn I completely agree with your statements. I assume, judging from the last sentence that you are in fact a fellow German who used to be an Ausbilder for basic trainees. In any case, thank you for your service.
It seems to me that many Germans with a similar backround to mine exist (purely because military service was mandatory for most of the time after 1871, which most Germans have either some imagination of, or even a personal relationship to) but do not want to or dare to identify with, let alone take up the occupational tradition existing within the family, because unlike in say the US or UK it is not deemed an honroable feat to have been a soldier either in the imperial German Army or the Wehrmacht. Whether the Bundesregierung today is right to condemn the Soldatentum of those eras or not is not really important to me, but it is interesting to think that the Bundeswehr as a whole struggles with a lack of tradition that could aid in finding and maintaining a certain leadership profile that could raise the attractiveness of our army in todays society, which I believe most sensible people would agree is important.

there are a few good documentaries about the ksk, unfortunately all in german and afaik not translated not even w subtitles.
they get almost unlimited resources, all the new toys, train with the best sf on the planet but still enjoy great secrecy and have incredibly effective training.
imagine american resources, sas tactics and german efficiency. :)
unfotunately they need a "mandate" for every move they make. i sometimes just wish they would just get set into attack mode and shred a bit here and there.

When I applied for normal service I was already dead after the tests and training, I can't imagine doing this I would have been kicked out in the first day. Sadly I was underweight and I didn't gain weight at all and when I have giving up, met my ex fiance and a got a job (became a nurse) they told me that now they lowered the BMI so I had a few days to cancel my service there. I wonder what would have happened if I did have taken it.

KSK is not just KSK, the test in the video is the general aptitude test.
The "KSK" is also divided into forces... e.g. psychological service, command company 1-3, special reconnaissance.
what you mean is the direct response team. - whose name is: Special Command Company. The Special Command Company is usually the first and last in the operational area.
and the training there looks completely different, and they have some self-determining powers regarding operations that also affect state operations.

And only if the have finished THIS "selection week" successfully, they are qualified to enter the KSK training as a trainee and start the training to become a future member ("Kommando-Soldat") of the KSK.

So the training here is called peanut but even at the KsK it is harder than it seems.I want to ask you as TH-camr , Have you been a soldier yourself to be able to give a correct opinion? Opinions very greatly from civilians. Don't misunderstand. I worked 17 Years for the British Forces Germany in Hameln , 28.EngrRgt.as well and ive seen SAS and Royal Marines talked to them , and they always sayed the Germans work Hard and willing to achieve the training goal, but never alone and always in a group, no matter what type of weapon unit it is.
