From WWII, there is a story asked of soldiers how they knew who they were facing: "If we shot and the return fire is machine gunfire, they're German. If the return fire is intermittent but extremely accurate, they're British. If there is a pause and then the response is artillery, bombers, and everything you can think of, they're American."

Russia clearly knew the oilfield base was staffed with Americans troops of some kind. They sent the Wagner mercenaries in to find out how the Americans might respond. The Russians learned what they wanted to know. The American troops would answer a threat quickly and with overwhelming force. The response was an intentional overkill. The cost of the lives of a few hundred Wagner mercenaries to learn the answer to the question would have been determined by the Russian military in advance to be acceptable.

@@noyopacific The American military is also just incredibly aggressive. From training to standing orders, if there's troops in contact and you're not stuck on a guard spot you go help. In early Iraq and Afghanistan commanders generally had to turn away help to prevent the battlefield from becoming too crowded. And if an American unit is genuinely in danger of being over run it all kicks into an even higher gear. The entire theater is at the disposal of that unit, even just a platoon of 60 guys. I saw that happen once and there were too many planes and helicopters to count coming in to help.

When the US military basically says "Please don't make me kill you." it's not a display of weakness, it's a promise wrapped in a logistics request. Someone has to hump in more ammo afterwards, and do the recovery/forensics.

Just the maintenance on the doors that open and close is staggering if parts have been pilfered or used non milspec parts. Nukes dont just sit there waiting to be launched, the core has to be replaced constantly to ensure a nuclear detonation. We see that often when they transport these materials because they roll down 10th Ave in a military convoy with air cover as well.

I understand that to have been common at this time to avoid direct conflict. However, I was told on good authority that there was a phone call after the conclusion of the engagement from the Americans to the Russians in which the Americans simply said “We confirm. We'd lock up the Migs, Master Arm off then the alarms and lights would go off in their cockpits. Next thing they turned and my wingman and I escorted then out. Later during shore leave I met a Soviet officer there. He was nice and pleasant but along the way, his tone changed and said "you damn Americans invent everything for your military", to which I said to him, if we invert and build it, it's because of his country's style of aggression. He nodded his head and replied, Da (yes) but told me they never thought America was going to build and build and build so many weapons. Well uncle sam used this situation as an opportunity to send a statement to Russia and everyone else at the time that attacking a u.s base would be met with swift and extreme prejudice. That's why all of those assets were used for the engagement definitely more than what was actually necessary.

Wagner group is globally known as Putin's privet personal military. As in, they don't so much as fart without his express permission.
Like, with Ukraine, when Russia was streaming in children and conscripts, the only ones on the field with any skill, weapons and training were his men. Which incidentally makes what happened recently REALLY interesting

It was at night and I doubt the Russians had night vision equipment. An Apache can see a human from a mile away at night and hit him with its 30mm grenades and effectively hit him from about 3/4 of a mile away. They wouldn't be shooting at the Apache, they would just be giving away their position via thermals with their muzzle flashes from firing in the air in some random direction.

We named the drones Reaper ourselves, that's our pompous and self-agrandising name choice, the AC130 earned its title on the battlefield. These are not the same.

First time I became aware of the AC-130's capabilities was watching it in action in the first Transformers movie, those films enamored me to the beauty of the US military and not only entertained me, but actually informed me on some US tactics. For example TF1 and the AC-130 in action here's the scene.
      th-cam.com/video/ginOii7N6HI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ET7_ViSxqYLaGYg1
Troops are underattack by the Decepticon SKroponok and as he's layign down fire on them they establish ontact with the Pentagon linking the call through an AWAC like a mobil command center.
Reaper drones establish visual contact, don't know what the hostile is but seeing the threat level deploy everything they can, A-10 Warthogs begin strafing the Con with bullets and missles after soldiers set laser guidance on it. When that doesn't work the beautiful AC-130 shows up using specific ordinance the troops requested and just begin laying into the Con, when the smoke clears it doesn't kill him but is enough to make him retreat, plus plenty of other cool scenes and use of the military, being a Transformers fan I've only coem to love the F-22 Raptor and F-15 Eagle even more recently after learnign just how capable they are as soem of the best fighters in the modern age, veyr fitting alt modes for the Decepticon Air Commander Starscream. Overall do not fuck with America, whether you're Nazis, North Koreans, Vietkong, Jihadis, Russians, or giant even alien robots. DON'T FUCK WITH AMERICA!!!!!!
