I have this exact model and the first thing I did was change the grips. But even if this is the little brother to the GP100, it handles .357 magnum like a champ and does not sting your hand at all. It does a beautiful job of soaking all that recoil. Though only a 5 shot revolver, 5 rounds of .357 is pretty capable in my book.
I've got one, and I can't remember how long ago I got it. Maybe 20 years ago or more. It's on my "never going to sell" list. In fact, it's the last revolver in my carry rotation.
This is my all time favorite revolver and one of my top 3 favorite handguns of all time. I'd love to get another one but the asking price these days is simply stupid.
I had mine sent to Gemini Customs to get some work done to make it more shootable. Trigger job, porting, chamfer the cylinder, and some minor dehorning since the SP101 has some sharp edges. I fire 357 magnums through this baby, so with the work performed it shoots like a 38 special. This baby is a tank. Love it!
Sootch didn't issue an important revolver warning... If you buy one, you'll end up with ... well let's just say many more. Especially if you get bit by the heavy caliber bug.
Ive owned 3 of these revolvers over the years. 1)-357 caliber w/hammer 2)-38 w/hammer 3)- 22lr w/hammer and 4" barrel. Picked them all up used. They were $250 used back in the day. And $350 new. Sure wish i would have kept them all ! But the trading bug used to bite me alot when i was young. I actually traded the 38 and 357 models even on a Sig Saur model 25 i just had to have at the time. Lol. These are great revolvers !
The case is not longer to hold more powder. You can achieve the requisite pressure in the .38SPL case. The case is longer to prevent you from putting the high pressure .357MAG rounds in a low pressure .38SPL firearm.
Carried this exact model on duty as a backup in an ankle holster from 1999-2003. Switched to the S&W 340 PD for its lightweight and better concealment. After 25 years, I still have my SP101. It’s now one of my home defense, hiking firearm.
I put wood inserts on my grip and painted the front sight bright orange. Carrying it in the Kenai chest rig by Gunfighters Inc. is very comfortable. Plus having a .357 mag in the woods makes me feel better. I tried carrying it on my hip, but no go. I carry a 442 with +p ammo instead. I shoot it pretty well. I just have to keep telling myself to keep the front sight in the dog house for both revolvers. Good stuff!😊
Wow Sootch, I believe we are brothers man! Seems that every video you seem to show covers gear I own or topics I’m interested in. I had that gun in 2.25” also. I wish I still had it. I traded it up for a GP 100 Wiley Clapp in black. Decent upgrade I think. I just jumped over to Ruger’s site. $919! Jeez! They got way expensive. Not the average man’s gun anymore.
They’re the average man’s gun in the Bidenflation era. But you can still pick a used one up at a pawn shop for half that. Even a used one will wind up in your grandchild’s collection if a politician doesn’t steal it first.
I've had this little pop gun for 20 years and it's still going strong. Great little backpack pistol. When using speed loaders and strip loaders, *get into the habit* of dropping them on the ground rather than placing them on the bench or in a pocket. We fight like we train and that extra second matters.
This was the first gun i wanted after getting my pistol license in 1992 (NY).Read all about it in magazines but my dealer couldnt find one so i bought a rossi 720 in 44 spl that i still have today.Well yesterday i bought a new sp101 in 357, 2.25 barrel, high gloss polished.match champion, with beautiful altmont/ ruger wood grips. After 32 years im so happy with my purchase.Had a k6s but didnt "love" it.This is a keeper that i will give to my son someday along with some other "keepers" i have.Traded a p30sk and some cash and could not be more satisfied.
Outstanding little revolvers. It was my first carry gun years ago and I still carry it often. I prefer my 3" model; longer sight radius, better velocity, and a bit more shootable with .357's. Ditched the floppy awful factory stocks for a nylon Hogue monogrip and swapped the front sight for a Meprolight tritium bead. It's one of the few revolvers that's more capable than a .38 snub yet far more carryable than say a 4" 686 or GP100. Love it.
I have the 101. I had a LCR in .38 but for me it was ,even with .38 , uncomfortable to shoot. That discouraged practice so I sold it and focused on my 101.
I have one, 357, short barrel, and mine has a hammer. I changed the grip to a Hogue rubber grip, got a trigger job and a deburring. Excellent shooter. It is not my daily carry. It is my going to town gun for concealment. I have a Smith Airweight with the hammer. Good gun, but not my favorite. Ruger makes very tough revolvers.

I know that some people think five shots is not enough but five shots of 357 is enough to do the trick. You can fire and move away if you're smart and you like revolvers you're carrying a speed loader or two on you somewhere. Friend of mine whose dad was a law enforcement officer for many years and carried 357s while he was an active officer told us one time. If you get yourself into a situation where you need more than five or six shots of 357 you had crappy situational awareness and let yourself get into a mess that you should have avoided. Then we would a say. We can understand that but what about if trouble comes to you quickly and you don't have time to get out of the way. His answer was just as typical. Just picked up a 4in Match Champion this past weekend and I love it. Balance and proportions are perfect for me and shoots like a dream. 38sp are a breeze and there’s no issues running 125gr, 158gr, or 180gr magnum loads.
A snubby .357 was my carry gun for at least a couple decades. I was always a .45 guy, but 1911s never lent themselves to carrying concealed. I have several .357s, and a few .38s the same size, but up until I got the M&P Shield (and now the Shield Plus), I got used to the snub-nosed .357. I bought all of my guns before “air-weights” came along, but weight was just something that was accepted… and at 15 meters and under, they’re as accurate as one needs. My mother has one!
Immediately caught my eye as I’ve been working on a small revolver collection. Since bag-carrying a Flux Raider I’ve fallen back on wheelguns for AIWB. Fast draw and super reliable. I’m on the hunt for one of these used myself and a Colt King Cobra to go with the couple J-frames I’ve acquired - my fave EDC is the S&W 340PD with .38 50gr. Civil Defense at 1500fps.

My primary summer carry..... Great little revolver.
My wife and mother in law both have this gun on my recommendation. I love it for their purpose. They are great revolvers. The extra weight makes them easier to shoot with 38 special loades for them.
Mine also. My wife and mother in law both hve tis gun. I bought my mother-in-law's. RM 380 to move her to this gun. Both like it. Both use Winchester silver tip 38 special for ammo.
Good video, I have that exact same firearm which I have been carrying for 20 years. I use Hornady critical duty 357 hollow point. I love this gun and hardly feel any weight at all. I have trained on it left and right handed and it is extremely accurate. It has a little bite but nothing that is unmanageable. I highly recommend it before you decide to carry a peashooter like a semi-auto 380. By the way I'm 67 years old so I don't believe it's nothing an older person can't handle with a little practice. You could run this thing over with a bulldozer and it would come out unscathed. As a bonus it's a great price compared to Smith & Wesson or Colt.😊
My first handgun was the SP101 in 2.75 inch. I changed out the grips. It will be in my safe forever. I will never sell it. I might get the hammerless model
In the quest for a Snub nose revolver i went with the Colt Cobra 38sp . Out of the box the trigger is awesome it's a little lighter than the SP even with an extra round! 6 civil defense rounds hardly add any weight to the gun besides it fits my hand better
I love my SP101! You know, it's funny just came across your channel and you compared the 101 w/ the SW 36. When I got into handguns, I bought my father-in-law the Chiefs Special 36 and it was way more powerful than I thought it would be chambered in .38. Anyway, thanks again, great video!
I have the SP 101 in the exact configuration you have except I have the rosewood inserts in the grip. Yes, the gun is heavy, but its easier to make follow-up shots. I could fire it all day at the range with no issues. I also have the Ruger LCRx with the 3 inch barrel. It weights 15 oz. It is NOT an alll day range gun. After 50 rounds, my hands hurt and the gun is no longer "fun" to shoot. The SP 101 is my EDC.
I have one of these in 3” with the conventional DA/SA configuration. Switched out the original plastic grip inserts for rosewood and the front blade sight for Meprolight tritium, but otherwise left it stock. It’s not my exclusive carry but it’s my favorite and I carry it more often than anything else, and it’s also the one usually handy in the nightstand for home defense. To me this is a practically ideal carry gun; it is my “light saber”, an “elegant weapon from a more civilized time”.
I've tried the speed loaders for the SP101 in the LCR and the Taurus 605 and they all use the same speed loader . Didn't like the LCR but the Ruger has always been my Favorite Brand .
I carry mine everyday. Stays in my lunch bag while I’m at work and concealed in my belt while away from work. It’s a little heavy at 1st but after you get used to it you don’t know it’s there. Love it. Yes I’m confident enough in my marksmanship to only need 1 or 2 rounds not 17. Did put a wolf spring kit in mine and changed the grips and orange dot the front sight
Love mine. Been part of the carry rotation for a long time. Its a little tank. Always gone bang and been super reliable. The only thing I changed on mine was putting on a Hogue monogrip. I just never could warm up to the factory Ruger grip.
Was my NYPD off duty weapon in 1991. DAO 38Spl. Solid gun. Long heavy trigger pull sometimes caused me to short stroke the trigger when rapid firing. Good, reliable revolver.
I am glad to see my last comment on the freedom arms clone is still there. Anyways this video is great 👍. I have Revolvers for many years and many revolvers. I think the new Colt Viper, specifically the 3", blows this out of the water. Especially when you consider the Viper has a 6 round cylinder, is still almost exactly the same footprint, and is only $80 more MSRP. If you get a chance to review the new Viper, please do a vid!
Glad you revisited a classic. As you say “We are in the Golden Age of firearms” but it is nice to see a 1989 firearm get some love!!!!

The SP101 is my favorite gun. The 125 gr 357 is a real sweet spot with it.
Love mine, I have 3 of them in 357, 22, and 9mm.
LCR 357 daily but love a SP101 just a classic hard hitting easy to carry pistol.
I carry an LCR357 everyday for the last 8 years
Love mine. Been part of the carry rotation for a long time. Its a little tank. Always gone bang and been super reliable. The only thing I changed on mine was putting on a Hogue monogrip. I just never could warm up to the factory Ruger grip.
We have the exact same sp101. It is my wife's favorite handgun, and she is good with it.I like it very much too, but she has 'adopted' it.
Fantastic Ruger revolver 🔫 👍👍
Thank you Sootch for the review, I was offered one of these today for a trade, I'm really thinking I'm gonna take it... God bless!
Живу в России, знаю что никогда не куплю такой 😢но смотрю и слушаю с удовольствием! Спасибо Вам! Спасибо You Tube! Всем добра! Да будет мир!
Was my NYPD off duty weapon in 1991. DAO 38Spl. Solid gun. Long heavy trigger pull sometimes caused me to short stroke the trigger when rapid firing. Good, reliable revolver.
Have one just feels good in your hand.
I am glad to see my last comment on the freedom arms clone is still there. Anyways this video is great 👍. I have Revolvers for many years and many revolvers. In 22lr,22mag,38spl,.357mag,9mm,and 44mag. S&W, Ruger, Taurus, Astra is from Spain. they have there pros and cons.Iam not going to get into any other comment. Awesome video thank you. 😊👍👍😊
Thanks for the kind words. Revolvers are the cats meow! lol!
The GP the TV series of handguns look like a fun blast from the past it looks like something that is built like a tank it functions like a tank it looks like I mean it's smooth but you know durable as a tank I wish I had enough money I'd buy all kinds of rugers and stuff I've had a few of their products over the years and they've held up really good as always this is just my humble opinion
Love the shorter lighter trigger compared to GP100.
It carries very easily and the weight soaks up the recoil on any 357 load.
can't imagine .357 in anything lighter
I think the new Colt Viper, specifically the 3", blows this out of the water. Especially when you consider the Viper has a 6 round cylinder, is still almost exactly the same footprint, and is only $80 more MSRP. If you get a chance to review the new Viper, please do a vid!
Great to see you making better videos Don!! with old school firearms
