    Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristopherson and Johnny Cash.. I'm not a country fan but i had a lot of respect for these guys. They were considered 'outlaw country' so they were kinda considered rebels.

    Written in 1948 by Stan Jones as "Riders In the Sky", Big hit for Vaughan Monroe in 1949. One of the first cowboy tales I really liked as a wee child. A classic, almost a standard.

    • @pauld6967
      @pauld6967 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Michael Loveland, it is good to share this information but I would make one change. India, the version by Monroe IS the standard. While it is fun to hear both singing the lyrics, the song has more impact in my opinion with Monroe's solo delivery since the Riders are giving their warning to one cowboy.

    "Yippee ky-yay, yippee ky-yo" is a cowboy's exclamation of celebration or positivity. The way this song transforms it into wail of sadness, mourning, and desperation really emphasizes the hopelessness of the doomed souls.

    You did Marty Robbins "El Paso" a few weeks ago---- Marty Robbins had the most popular version back in the 50s, then Johnny Cash had a big hit with his version, and a few others with deeper or more 'mellow' sounds also recorded it too..... BTW, your comment about "changing" is what the cowboy in Marty Robbin's *_"El Paso"_* should have done instead of killing someone to kiss Felina on last time & die in her arms

      My dad used to sing this song when I was a kid - he told me he had learned in when he used to be a cowboy - my dad was born in 1916 and was in the CCC's in Utah when he was 16 - during the Great Depression. I thought that was so cool - my dad was a cowboy! I realized years later the song was written in the late 40s - so I guess my dad was embellishing his story. He actually was in the CCC's in Utah but he was building roads. Where would a kid from the Bronx learn to run a cattle drive ? The song still reminds me of him, I used to beg him to sing it -sooo spoooky!

    Keep in mind that the entire cowboy thing was an incredibly brief moment of time.... between the development of huge ranches and the railroads being built. Once that happened there was no more need to run cattle all of the way from the west to the slaughterhouses in Chicago. And most of them really were boys, 13-20 years old. So.... cautionary tale. A lot of boys didn't survive the hard, dangerous life.

    This is a fun cover of a very old song. You can search Google and TH-cam for dozens of old versions of it, including an old sound film from the 1930's and the transcript of a radio broadcast from the 1940's (which was recorded on a wire recorder of all things) -- here's a link to a Burl Ives 1948 version (th-cam.com/video/j2klh2cTa_Q/w-d-xo.html), and Gene Autry from 1949 (th-cam.com/video/iRV6JszMXoo/w-d-xo.html). One of the Highwaymen superstars Johnny Cash even has an elaborate version he recorded in 1962 that my dad liked (th-cam.com/video/Mynzbmrtp9I/w-d-xo.html). If you search, I'll bet all 4 of them recorded this song earlier in their careers.

    Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristopherson and Johnny Cash performed as The Highwaymen back then. It was quite gathering of talent. The thing about cowboy work, maybe more than many out door work is that cattle don't take a break, so weather regardless, you are out there with those cattle. There is a "but" though. You can be out there in weather where the wind is blowing so hard that you can hear power lines humming in the wind like giant guitar strings. But there is really fine weather too. So, the punishment for a "bad" cowboy in the song is work in the worst conditions.

    The story comes from an ancient European folklore. It is about a group of hunters and their hounds that are caught up in an endless hunt. Depending on the country they appear differently, but it ends all the same. If you are caught up in the hunt you are doomed to chase your prey til the end of time. You got it right when you said "Wild Hunt".

    Roy Rodgers version was a lot better. It's the one you should have done if you wanted to hear the best one

    Even if you don't do a reaction, watch the Video of this song covered by the Blues Brothers. Its was probably the best part of the movie Blues Brothers 2000. The Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash parts are done by Dan Ackroyd and John Goodman, and has a great animation that plays along with it. Just a fun watch.
