  • Oil painting isn't something that comes natural to me. I loved to create my whole life, but had to learn to become a full time student, embracing the learning process, in order to progress to where I wanted to be as an artist. In this video I talk about my story and how that led me to what I'm doing in my painting process now and where I'm hoping to take that.

    I've been painting seriously for about a year now, and most of my inspiration comes from your work, Chuck. I started a TH-cam channel four months ago, and always looked to your videos for tips for painting but also editing and inspiration. Great job as always, and I agree. Painting takes a lifetime to achieve greatness in, and I can't wait for the journey. Thanks for the inspiration!

      Have a look at the 4 books by E. JOHN Robinson....each book is different and he explains everything he learned in the 40 years that he studied the sea and painted it. You'll learn a lot...also try oils there's no need to use solvents that are toxic. Gamblin has 2 products solvent free gel and solvent free liquid that can be used in the underpainting to thin paint. Both also are toxic free alkyd that speed drying time.

    Through the years i have come to depend on underpainting as a huge foundation to the next stage of painting. I was challenged a while back to do a verdaccio underpaintng, and do all the work there, (i.e: detail, contrast, and composition) and then just glaze over that. It was an illuminating moment! Arguably it works better in oils than acrylic, but it is just one of many ways to achieve your goal to that perfect painting! Thanks for sharing! I could see how this was beneficial to your work!

    First thank you. I have absorbed and learned from your techniques. I've retired and for 2 1/2yrs I've been learning to paint I have just started learning the process of Grisaille and have watched multiple videos from multiple artists and really appreciate you on your techniques and your explanation on those techniques. You truly have a passion and it shows in your work

    Another beautiful painting and that it's a horse, pleases me even more, as I love these animals. The horse's face expression is really awesome.
    Just one hint to improve: The hind legs, between knees and ankles, seem to narrow and too thin. A horse has massive muscles in its legs and they form kind of a triangle when well-trained.

    • @chuckblackart
      @chuckblackart  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's how my reference was, and I wondered about that. I don't think these horses get riden a lot anymore which maybe has something to do with that. Thanks so much!

      I have worked more then 50 years from the backs of many different breeds of horses. All four paintings Chuck has captured each of the individual horses. I see older horses that are enjoying their retirement years. The buckskin (painting #4) is a very old horse, you see his age in his face and withers. The pony looks like he was a child’s favorite mount, well loved and bomb proof for any grandchildren that might want a ride. And the sorrel horse, I wouldn’t want to ride him, he looks rough, short neck, narrow shoulders, no withers. A life lived is what I see looking at a Chuck Black horse portrait! Thank You for your outstanding work

    I have always just painted as a hobby and recently people have begun to ask for commission work. I did one piece as a gift to a ranching family and suddenly I have multiple others wanting paintings as well! It's really exciting, but also quite nervewracking because I don't know what I'm doing half the time and I've never thought myself to be a "professional" artist. That's why I enjoy watching your videos so much, they give me ideas for other techniques to try when I can't seem to figure it out for myself!

    Fantastic, Chuck!!! It's been very evident, over the years I've been watching you paint, there is more and more of YOU that goes into each new work. For an artist, a new technique discovery is also a new self discovery, in a constantly developing thought process. One thing I used to do a lot was to "create" a creature that didn't exist, (mostly birds), and create my own colour scheme for them. That can push the thought processes a bit😅...and also drive you a bit 🤪...😂😂
    Beautiful painting!!! The smallest details are phenomenal!!! Thanks!!!

    Your experience sounds like the exact opposite of mine. I was an oil painter first, and I can't get the hang of acrylics. I've found Golden Opens to be a good compromise because you have so much control over the drying process. Interesting, I didn't get into painting as much as I wanted because acrylic frustrated me. I found oil at some point and realized how much better it suits me. Oil painting has taught me so much, it's starting to get easier to use the knowledge for other mediums. I also watercolor, which also used to frustrate me but not anymore. Growth can be surprising.
