    For those who don't know or don't remember, the average age of a combat infantryman in Vietnam was 19. That means that an awful lot of pretty little girls with bows in their hair were left mourning their first boyfriend. To make matters worse, a lot of guys were killed on the day their tour was scheduled to end.

      It was hard to like this comment, but I did due to the fact my family experienced multiple losses in that war, and only two made it back. And we’re beyond grateful that that number isn’t 0.
      I have so much to say, but I don’t even feel like I should have the right to. There should be so many here to tell stories. But being at home, waiting on my own, thanks for your comments.

    I still have trouble listening to this (one of the reasons I requested it). It came out just after my big brother got deployed to Iraq in '02. I spent that whole 14 months, and another year while he was in Afghanistan, barely sleeping because I didn't want to miss anything that popped up on CNN. When I did sleep, I had to be holding one of our cordless phones in case a call came in. Let me tell you, a 3am call from the other side of the world where he only had time to tell me that something happened but he's okay is the most gut-wrenching thing in the world. One time he couldn't get to the phone before the story hit the news and I had to wake my mom up at 2:30 in the morning because helicopters carrying members of his unit had been shot down in Afghanistan and he hadn't called (he was okay but it was close and terrifying). I'm 30 now and I still have a panic attack if there's ever a knock on the door or someone rings the bell when I'm not expecting it. That 12-15 year old part of me always expects there to be someone in uniform on the other side with a letter.

    Dixie Chicks were OPENLY against the Iraqi war, publicly stated their opinions on Bush and what he did. However, they have always supported the individuals forced to fight. And this song expresses their feelings towards the war as well, and the consequences of it.
    I think you missed the point of the song. "One name read, that no body really cared, but one pretty girl with a bow in her hair.."

    When I was about 18, I found out that no one but my Sunday school teacher was the only person to be writing to a young man from our church. It made me mad that not one young person in our church was not writing to him, the teacher was old enough to be his mom, and not one young person was writing to him. He was in Vietnam. I told the teacher I would write to him and I did almost weekly while he was gone. I only got to see him once after he came home. I really liked him a lot but my family moved and I never saw him again. We lost touch after we moved. I still think about him once in a while and say a prayer for him. That was about 62 years ago.

      Yeah, I've noticed that, too.
      I think most, including Billy in this video, don't realize (at least until they've listened to the song more than once) that the piccolo player from the marching band who was crying under the stands by herself ( 6:12 ) is the same girl (with a bow in her hair) the soldier met working at the lunch counter ( 1:09 ) in the beginning of the song. I guess she was the only one who recognized his name when it was read. Just one more (out of 50,000) name to everyone else.

    • @steam_jane5580
      @steam_jane5580 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have always seen it as an anti-war song or at least against the horrible consequences of war. One lonely man ('nobody really cared But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair') only had one young girl ('too young for him they told her'), whom he met not long ago ('Two days past eighteen He was waiting for the bus in his army green'-, 'Would you mind if I sent one back here to you'), who waited for him in vain. ('For the list of local Vietnam dead
      Crying all alone under the stands')
      It's heartbreaking. me and my dad like listening to the Dixie Chicks or now Chicks. This is a beautiful, sad song with great storytelling and it sounds so good.

      @ Bob James. Must feel good being apart of the 1%. Let me guess..you raised your kids as non-binary "people" until they could decide for themselves, right? And you voted Hilary for your love of pant suit's and murder mysteries too? I'm sure if i asked you you would tell me Benghazi was a hoax and we never landed on the moon. If you really cared about the troops you wouldn't side with the ideals of people like that. Not when we had warriors signing up in record numbers to get in the fight and get some. You cant have it both ways. You either supported the war or you didn't. But you can't pretend to love your troops but hate what they do at the same time.

    • @bobjames6284
      @bobjames6284 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@MP-hs3rd - Wow. You forgot to call me a Satanist, and a guy who borrows tools and doesn't return them. I won't bother disabusing you of your assumptions about me personally, but I would like to say that your line about "warriors signing up in record numbers to get in the fight and get some" is comic book shit. There are some of that type around, but that attitude doesn't last long in the face of the real world, where the other people are trying to do the same thing to you. Modern armies, and the US military in particular, are professionals who train hard and take pride in their skill and knowledge of their jobs. Throwing them into wars in Afghanistan and later Iraq with no real strategic plan beyond breaking stuff and killing people was childishly moronic and led to chaos and power struggles that will last for generations and cause many thousands of civilian deaths. There are times when fighting a war is necessary, but this was just Dubya trying to one-up his daddy and using a finely tuned instrument as a blunt object to do it. Yes, that is shameful. Real wars aren't like movies, where the good guys always win and live happily ever after. The troops have to live with what they've seen and done, their families have to live with not knowing whether their loved ones will come home (and a lot of them don't), civilians die and suffer in massive numbers, and things get generally fucked up for a long time afterwards. Everyone has to pay a horrible price, and it's not something that should ever be entered into lightly. Supporting the troops shouldn't include throwing them away in a useless war to stroke some draft-dodging asshole's ego and make him feel like a big man. These people have all put their lives and futures on the line to defend their country, and we owe it to them not to abuse their trust.

    -A LOT of the men who died in Vietnam were between the ages of 18-23 and most of them were drafted and didn't want to be there in the first place. It's so sad they lost their lives so young. Whenever I see a Vietnam Veteran, I say "thank you for your service." They were treated like garbagte when they came back and so many lost their lives. Many of those men who survied saw their friends die in combat. Even all these years later, saying thank you means so much. And thank you for your service Billy.

      The ghost in the hall,
      " ... written by Bruce Robison."
      THANK YOU for giving the songwriter the credit that so few people seem to care about. While his performance of the song is dull, in my opinion, by comparison to the way The Dixie Chicks perform it, he should at least get more recognition for creating it in the first place. It is really a moving song, both musically and through the lyrics.

    I was just a little girl during the Vietnam war. Our family knew so many 18 yr. old boys who were sent to Vietnam. I was just a little girl. Luckily I learned to read & write very well, & very young. I sent letters to all of them. They all looked so forward to all the letters they recieved. I always requested prayers for all of our people in Vietnam at Sunday School & church. They all came home except one. All that came home were feeling broken inside. A hug, a smile, my mama inviting them for a meal, all those kinds of things really helped them.

    Everytime I hear this song it touches me deep down in my soul. My heart aches for the men and women that are away from family and friends, from the people they love. I was married to a marine for 3 years. We spent that 3 years in Japan. He was gone for months at a time doing training. I had never felt that lonely before. I could only imagine how lonely he felt. I need to say a warm Thank You to ALL military personnel, serving now and before. Thank You all so much for the privileges we are allowed because of your sacrifice.

    Thanks for doing this reaction video; and thank you for serving our country.
    I'm probably one of the few posting a comment who had not just one, but two family members deployed to Vietnam, my father in '65 and my oldest brother in '68. Back then we had reel-to-reel tape recordings, and whenever my father would send one home, my mom and all the kids would gather round and listen. It was so great to hear his voice, and then we would record a tape to send back to him. When my brother was in Nam, he sent me a Seiko watch for my birthday. I wore it for many years until someone stole it. I was absolutely devastated.
    Both my father and brother came home alive and physically unharmed, but being in Nam really damaged them emotionally and mentally. They were never the same as when they left. War is a never-ending assault on soldiers and the ones who love them, no matter how much we think we've left it behind.
