      My barrel was cut down to 18.5 inches. This did a few things for me. 1.) shortened length which helps with storage, concealment, and maneuverability 2.) gets rid of my chokes so I don’t have IC on one barrel and Modified on the other barrel or whatever… both barrels are the same so my patterns are consistent regardless of barrel. I set up this gun for defense, not hunting. 3.) Lastly, it increases the spread of my shot patten. Thanks for watching.

      @@Mogas0311 In this case your shotgun barrels' bores sans chokes would be labeled a "Cylinder Bore" choke - meaning, effectively, no choke at all. These work fine for close range defensive shooting. In fact, at 7 to 10 yards the pattern using double-aught buckshot remains the size of a softball. Only when out to 15 yards and beyond does the pattern from a Cyl Bore open up to volley- or soccer ball size or greater. Great vid. Thanks.

    In 2011 there was no police in Egypt, I mean literally no police, and a lot of the prisoners have escaped from prisons.
    My family had shops, farm lands and a small factory, in addition to our house of course 😅.
    And we had to count on ourselves for almost a month to protect our lives and properties.
    We had 9 mm Beretta pistols and side by side shotguns, and it did the job.
    I'm talking about a country collapse scenario over here, so it is really tested.
    Thankfully, this situation didn't last forever, because the Egyptian army secured the country after a month of all this madness.
    Thankfully this is all from the past now and unlike other armies in the area, we had an army that ranks the safety of citizens as a priority.
    Thanks for the video, it brought back some memories.

    Okay. Here's a TMI testimonial.
    My SO is a collector and has been for 100 years. He has let me use some of his firearms and I fell in love with the Stoeger O/U 20ga shotgun. As a "woman of a certain age" (that means old, by the way), I found it easy to handle, easy to clean. and fun to use. In fact, as a member of a woman's shooting club, I brought it with me when our bi-weekly assignment was to bring our home defense gun. Ha! I was the only one with a shotgun and it made short work of the paper target. In my opinion, two cartridges don't matter. You shoot one, and an intruder will have a sudden bladder/bowel problem immediately if you miss him. Just sayin'.
    in addition to being a "woman of a certain age," I'm apparently weaker than my younger self. Okay. Whatever. But I can still open my own pickle jars. The thing is that this inexpensive shotgun is great for pleasure shooting, clays, targets, and it works really well as a home defense weapon. I haven't tried a side by side yet, but I think that's next. While I'd love a bespoke British shotgun ($100,000 anyone?), I'm happy with an inexpensive American shotgun that's fun to use. Thanks for this review. I may put my plans on purchasing a semi handgun on hold just to get my hands on another shotgun.

    My grandad and grandma's 1950s 20 gauge Springfield Stevens double is still very effective on both game and threats. It has given way to my Mossberg 500 20 pump though. In a pinch I still will grab my FIE .410 single. Folks may think that a single or double barrel can't do the job because of capacity but like anything else if you practice with it you get faster. Shotgun is my first choice for an inside the house defense gun. Takes out a threat effectively but penetrates barriers less depending on your ammo. With bystanders in the house, #4 turkey load is a big deal. Thanks for sharing.

  • @michaelp3336
    @michaelp3336 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Another great presentation Andrew! You bring up some really valid points regarding the use of shotguns in home defense. Although no one will argue that capacity in “shotties” is a limiting factor, there is no argument on the effectiveness in a home defense scenario. The short stature and simplicity in the manual of arms makes this Stoeger a winner. Thanks for a review on something that isn’t an AR platform...Refreshing!

    I am from the South and we can only use Buckshot for Deer and Shotguns are part of our Heritage. I have about a dozen high end shotguns, but noticed many old timers in my Hunt club and switched over to the Stoeger 20" OV. Talking to them I found out they loved the gun. Picked one up and have been delighted. I also do a lot of walking through swamps and some really nasty area's. Never like taking a expensive gun into these places. I have shot the heck out of the Stoeger Outback. A few thousand rounds of Buck shot alone. Always reliable. The fact that you can get a 20" with the ability to change out Chokes is a huge plus. This shotgun has really surprised me. Tough construction, patterns very well with Slugs and anything I put in it. It is a true solid Utility Shotgun that does it's job perfectly.

  • @flyboytim2009
    @flyboytim2009 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for the great video. In considering the venue of home defense, I think it’s more important to count the number of projectiles launched at a threat rather than the number of shots. That way, we have a more valid comparison. For example, your #4 buckshot launches 24 pellets that weigh about 20.7 grains and are .24 caliber each. Since many .22 caliber bullets weigh 40 grains, let’s halve the total number of projectiles from the shotgun and say it launches the equivalent of 12 .22 bullets with each trigger press. That’s like shooting a 10/22 12 times at an assailant with one aim and one press of the trigger. Plus, you have another 12 10/22 trigger presses behind that one with the second shell. That’s a lot of firepower.
    I’ve seen a number of home invasions caught on surveillance cams, here on TH-cam. In virtually every one, regardless how well armed and how many are the invaders, each and every time, the invaders literally run over each other in an attempt to flee the scene. I submit, that you would have a difficult time finding historical evidence of a home defense situation where two rounds of buckshot, no matter the caliber, were inadequate to stop the threat. And these little guns are quick to bring into action....

    4:06 As far as accuracy goes, the great thing about shotguns is that unless you're shooting slugs, you really don't nee dot be that accurate due to the shot spread. Obviously at 'in-house' ranges of (say) 3 to 5 yards, you're not going to get any real spread to speak of, but you can just point and shoot and a man-size target at 3 to 5 yards is a no-brainer. But at greater ranges, you're hit probability actually increases due to shot spread, up to a point. I have a sawn-off old Russian single shot with an 18.5" barrel and a couple of weeks ago I too a grouse at 35 yards with it using No. 8 shot.

    What's really great about those is the ability to reliability use the mini shells. Less noise, less recoil, but still plenty of power to get the job done. One thing to note about the Stoeger is the firing pins are soft and mushroom over time. Hardened pins are available, 25 USD for a pair and the tool to change them is 14 USD. Easy upgrade.

    Stoeger should add shell ejectors for their self-defense models. That would help with faster reloading. With practice, it's formidable.

    I believe the right barrel is choked down to IC, and the left is M. So, if you soot the buckshot from the left tube, it will be a little bit tighter (if you look under the handguard it will be stamped **** and *** for the choke value).

    Good points. Two shots of 12 or 20 ga shoukd be enough for most situations. Crine tends to be a slitary activity- no partner means no one to blab. One small point you forgot to mention is that the followup shot is quite fast, with no need to cycle an action. As someone mentioned, the mini shells are an option (at least in 12 ga- do they make 20 ga?) for reduced recoil, and they will be effective. I heard that someone (maybe Federal?) is finally making a 20 ga load with #1 buck- 12 pellets i think. That would probably be just the ticket. I bought a 12 ga Stoeger for my best friend for his birthday in Nov of 2018 (he was going to start doing some CAS). Unfortunately he passed away at age 49 on 2-21-2019, before we ever fired it. We miss you, Big G. His sons have it now, so one of these days we need to go break some clays. Also, shotguns like this present a traditional, modest appearance. Civil juries are often turned off by accesorized "tacti-cool" firearms. And here in Kalifornia, i can just about guarantee that there will be a wrongful death lawsuit after almost any self defense shooting. Stay safe!

    I have a couple of those in the house. One has a tube-shaped (no enlarged head) flashlight taped under the barrel. It puts light on the Point of Impact. The other has a little laser taped in position under the barrel. At night, shooting at a racoon fighting with my dog, it is nice to be able to get the head up off the stock so I can see the big picture. The laser is perfect for aiming.

    Mine has double triggers as yours does. I like this for hunting options because you can load different shells and choose between them instantly. Also, I got mine with choke tubes. I have tubes from cylinder to double full. If you want to learn how to use one quickly, check out cowboy action shooting. Mine is 12 which I like for hunting. I think 20 is more than fine for home defense. I am no expert. I just have one. Love it. 3 inch federal double buck shells kinda hurt when you pull the trigger. 15 double buck projecticles per shell would more than hurt on the other end.

    One thing good about a double barrel you can easily clean the barrel and if you read the schematic to take it apart.
    But a double barrel side by side sights are different then a over and under, pump, or semi auto sights.
    On the sights are more difficult then other shotgun sights.

    nice video that properly explains the advantage of an old design. most folks would be better served with a break action shotgun for home defense. at in-home distances even #5 gameshot is effective. i have a h&r 20” 20 ga single shot with recoil pad and buttstock shell holder under my bed, which at $120 total is maybe 1/3 the cost of a stoeger double. while only one shot the h&r autoejects spent hulls making for a quick reload, probably a faster operation than the stoeger double with its manual extraction. 20ga is a perfectly adequate and easier round.

We don’t know what’s happening with 12 gauges in Canada right now they might ban anything over 20 mm are talking about but I think a 12 gauge is about 18 mm if I read correctly so I’m gonna hang onto my 12 for now but I like these coach guns

    Another advantage not mentioned: it’ll defeat body armor. Might not punch through, but they’ll drop if they catch a slug to the chest. Chest full of broken ribs minimum. And seeing as you can buy body armor off amazon these days, that becomes a strong consideration.

  • @northshores7319

    Good presentation. 20 g. has many pellets. I plan to aim at the head as some of them pellets will poke an eye out. In 12g., Federal has a 3inch, 15 pellet #00 load which is extremely powerful. I think 2 shots out of this shotgun is enuf in a home defense situation as I do not think it is a good idea to stand out in the open blasting with any gun. 2 shots, get covered, reload and you will most likely see the back of the bad guys as they flee. I have yet to see a video where the bad guys stay and shoot back at the home owner.

    Word of warning; Sellier and Bellot 00 buck, 2 3/4, does NOT work in this gun. Maybe I got a bad batch, but I've seen at least one other forum post saying the same. They fit the chamber, slide in real easy, but the brass lip is slightly too shallow causing them to slide too far into the chamber. When you try to open the gun, the extractor can't get a grip on the cartridge lip, and they jam the action. The only way to extract them is to disassemble the gun.
