Always open the fill port 1st! If you have a problem opening that... draining the oil 1st is not a good idea. From bad previous experiance!

Fabulous, similar work done by Cleevely EV mobile service on my drive, including new filter and wheels off (rotating front to back) and hands on brake inspection. And for almost exactly the same cost. James from Cleevely similarly coated all the exposed power terminals and lubricated the hinges. Didn’t need the brake tear down as we live a long way from any ocean. Brake pads similarly hardly used - car is in Eco mode, regen level 3 90+% of the time.

Because of this video when I bought a used 7 month old 2021 Kia Niro EV with 15,500 miles and no maintenance, I insisted the Kia dealership near my seller do a used car inspection and change the gear reduction oil. They charged me far more than your shop and seemed to do far less work. My gear reduction oil was golden unlike yours, but I'd rather have replaced and it be golden than your dark oil and have not replaced.

For you information, I remember asking you for 30,000 mile servicing.
I went to the dealership and all they said is to drain the coolant system and refill it with new coolant. I spend £160 to buy the coolant from the Kia dealership.
I could be wrong, but I remember buying 7 L of coolant. Cost me approximately £160.

Another great video Jonathan, thank you! 👍
Very interesting to see that even having more done than is required by Kia for the first service the cost is very reasonable indeed. Fascinating to also see just what the mechanics did - I hadn't realised the brake assembly is quite like it is.
I decided to lease my Hyundai Kona over a 2-year period and opted not to take the service package that was offered by the dealer because I wanted to see what the actual service cost would be. I'm pretty sure it will be far less than the hybrid cars I had previously. The servicing will be done at a Hyundai dealer, just to keep things easy from the lease point of view but it was very interesting to hear that Kia will allow non-main dealer garages to carry out servicing and not void the warranty, which most other manufacturers will do.
I live in Nottinghamshire so no salty sea spray to deal with but I've noticed the brakes can sometimes grate a bit as they are getting almost no use due to me using level 3 regen all the time.

If you slightly loosen the refill plug before draining the oil, the oil will pour out more smoothly. I have an owner with a July 2021 made Kona EV (same drivetrain), reduction gear failure at 30,000 miles and motor bearings failure at 12,000 miles.

      @Peppermint1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@JonathanPorterfield Is that extended warranty ? In Canada we get 5 years / 60,000 miles. Speaking again about the reduction gear, from what I understand Hyundai/Kia are completely in denial if an owner is asking for oil change (they say it's lifetime oil). No one understands why some owners get very black oil with only few miles on the car (another forum owner had only 1400 miles and the oil was completely burned black on a 2022 Kona EV), I'm going to guess it happens mostly with owners who do hard accelerations more often, maybe also on cars using Regen 3 more often. It has to do with the amount of torque on the reduction gear whose metal may not have been hardened enough for more demanding operating conditions.

Its better to put wipe on battery terminals thicker grease than spray grease. Also copper ease where the alloy wheel meets the brake disc/hub as alloy wheels are known to get stuck due to corrosion between the two metals (alloy and steel). That's a bargain, for the 'e', Honda charge a standard £175 for a basic 1st year/10k service and all I got (assuming they actually did anything) for that was:
    Inspect front and rear brakes.
Check expiry date for tyre repair kit bottle Every year.
Visually inspect the following items: Driveshaft boots, Tie rod ends, steering gear box, and boots, Suspension components, Brake hoses and lines (including ABS/VSA), All fluid levels and condition of fluid, Under body battery cover.
    A stamp in the book.
If I asked them to do the same work as the HEVRA garage you used I expect that they would have charged at least double the basic £175 service cost.
BTW - When I enquired, they were charging the same 5yr fixed service price for the e as the ICE cars!
Year 2 is currently £225 with year 3 at £250
Note that the corrosion warranty is only valid if Honda inspect the car and stamp the book every year, if you take it anywhere else then you're not covered as stipulated in the Honda T's & C's.

Ive been behind the scenes at main dealers , and its all an act , if the mechanic is 'just following orders' then thats what he will do , as its all in the manufacturers service schedule, and then the service receptionist will charge you for it ! 😉

@@JonathanPorterfield How true. I get deluged by our "partner" VW main agent demanding that we book our car in to give them money.
We bought our ID.3 used in March 2022 and it was 2 years 3 months old with 11,800 miles covered. There was a fault with the 12v battery which showed very quickly so I booked in to them to have it replaced under warranty. I got a full video of an inspection and then a video with a list of recommended work which included changing two tyres with 3.8mm of tread at nearly £200 a tyre, a first service which was "overdue" at £250 plus parts and replacing the brake fluid for about £80. All plus vat ...
More recently they have been emailing me to get the car checked before the 3 year warranty ends and to give it it's first MoT. In fact, it was MoT'd on 1st March this year so still has nearly 4 months MoT. Clearly they didn't check. Also, I have had to book it online for a software upgrade. They are supposed to invite customers in but have not done so. They called me back and tried to sell me a service and MoT.
Interestingly and annoyingly you don't get a service book with an ID.3. VW keep all that information online. I'll just keep my records in a file which in reality will only ever be needed for warranty claims or when I come to sell the car in a decade or so.

@@ThePrawlin As you might be aware, a number of Kona owners on InsideEVs and HyundaiKonaForum have been reporting oil changes for about 7 months now and we have five used-oil analyses so far. By most accounts the black oil is caused by a defective or inadequate internal magnet which seems to affect ALL examples. The simple fix is change to a Votex DP007 or Toyota 90341-18057 magnetic plug, or simply place a 20mm diameter x 5mm neodymium magnet on the outside of the OEM plug, drain and/or fill at your option. Whether dirty oil is connected to the wheel-of-fortune (tapping) noise remains to be determined. I'm checking mine every 2,000 km (with magnetic plugs) and at the last check the oil was perfectly clean.

There are 4 jacking points at each end of the sills, a 2 tonne scissor Jack or better still a trolley jack. You can fit a full size alloy wheel & tyre in the spare wheel well

A general question and not Kia specific. If the 12v battery fails or gets to a low state of charge on an EV. Will the electronic parking brake and or electronic ‘hand’ brake release? Around here, there’s lots of hills. Im concerned that a parked vehicle, could without warning, descend an incline. Or is it a bit like air brakes, that actually require power to release the brakes?

@@sko1beer - Don’t know about all cars but I’ve seen lots of both Hyundai & Kia EV 12v battery problems. When they go flat, owners have to use the traditional physical key to gain entry, as the doors and boot lid remain locked. They then have to ‘jump’ the 12v battery with a booster, to get all the 12v systems working. Longterm, the OEM 12v battery that Hyundai supply for both Hyundai & Kia EVs, is a weak item; and should in my humble opinion, be replaced with a decent aftermarket battery.
You don’t need a high CCA battery but you do need a battery, that perform well in low states of charge. As the system that is suppose to keep the 12v battery topped-up, just doesn’t seem fit for purpose. If it was, there wouldn’t be so many people complaining about Hyundai or Kia 12v batteries lasting less than a year; or having to have multiple OEM 12v battery replacements during a lease period.

They will not release on the Kia e-Niro. The 12V battery drained on my e-Niro numerous times (until I discovered the problem, which was a parasitic draw from the electric seat motor). My drive is on an incline. The parking brake stayed set. It would have to be considered a major engineering design flaw if any car, EV or not, started rolling freely when the driver had originally set the parking brake, merely because of a loss of 12V battery power.

To be honest Jonathan I believe that a full brake strip, clean and lube should be part of any annual service. I had Cleevely do the brakes on our ID.3 (I can hear your groans) and probably will every year. The amount of crud on our roads here in middle Earth, er I mean England is horrendous and we're just approaching gritting season as I type this (November 2023).
I thought that tyre wear was slightly excessive on our ID.3 though yours seemed far worse than ours. I'm about to have some Michelin Cross Climate 2's fitted all round ready for the worst of winter (we do get occasional heavy snow falls and icy roads) so if there is a penalty for range I'll live with it trading safety instead. We travel below average miles anyway so the small extra cost incurred will still be well below that endured for fuel by fossil drivers.
At the next service I'll be having brake fluid replaced (more than 3 years by then) and the gear reduction oil is on my list though I see no reports of issues in the VW ID range, yet.
We are planning to bring our ID.3 to Orkney next year (2024). Just giving you plenty of notice because I wouldn't like the shock if you see it to bring on a medical emergency. 😉
