It wouldn't even be bad if they just bothered to release the dlc to everyone after 2 years. That way people were paying for the privilege of playing through something early, not being locked out of mechanics until they pay.

I myself don’t even have the motivation to play most AAA games anymore. From slaving away at generic battle passes that have seeped their way into every game to the half baked releases, it all kills my motivation. Indie games are the only things that really keep me coming back

Indie games suffer from cheaters and hackers a lot of time. Battlebit is one example. And I heard third party anticheat software is expensive for Indies. I still play triple a games and I just ignore all the battle pass and whatever micro transaction being sold in the game

In the last ~3-4 years(since the ps5/series launch) I've bought 3 AAA games anywhere near release date or price (ive picked up some on sale like rdr2). They share a common theme though
      Elden Ring
Baldurs Gate 3 (debatably indie) and
      Armored Core 6
But I've been a fromsoftware fan since the ps2 and I've been waiting for BG3 on baited breath since my childhood blaythrough of the originals, and since larian announced it after DOS II.
      What do these titles share?

When was this? Most of the series and studios that are milked to death today started as indie or AA projects at most before devolving into their current status. Even back when studios like bungie still earned people's adoration, they were still screwing over their consumers of games like halo 3 by doing the same things they do today with destiny, like paywalling vanilla gamemodes and challenges behind DLC that came out after them. This is just how the games industry and capitalism as a whole works, it's not about passion or satisfying the playerbase, it's about shareholders and publishers profiting as much as possible by rehashing the same monetization schemes and live service games.

Quake is a better Dusk, Deus Ex is a better Cruelty Squad, etc. This "Triple A bad, indie good" mindset lead to toxicity and an oversaturated roguelite market. While Triple A is currently making actually good games like the resident evil 4 remake, cyberpunk, Elden Ring and the like - indies are just realizing that there's a genre outside of roguelites.
Not to mention, the comparison is extremely unfair and the numbers are pulled out of thin air. Maybe he's only using Call of Duty and Far Cry as an example, but many triple A games can be played for 20-30 hours, not including RPGs like fallout new vegas, and they have enough replayability to stay relevant for years, if not decades.

I was watching a video about bbr's success recently and it was talking about how publishers have almost become obsolete and tbh I kinda agree with it. When digital distribution has become so common, why DO AAA companies need to submit themselves to the whims and politics of their publishing company?

    • @gabrielcabral1665
      @gabrielcabral1665 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Because developer companies [studios] in the "AAA" [Corporate] side of the industry are subsidiaries, OWNED by the publisher companies; whereas in the "Indie" [Independent] side of the industry, developer companies and publisher companies are independent from one another, and maintain a purely transactional relationship (rather than the latter owning the former).
An "Indie" studio will pitch a game idea to a publisher; if the publisher thinks the idea is worth the investment, they will fund the game's production and help with the marketing, distribution (e.g.: porting the game), etc, in exchange for a percentage of the game's sales profits (usually 100% until the game "pays for itself"; after that, it's usually a "50/50" or a "60/40" type division of the profits). This is a very "bottom-up" approach, and both parties get what they want - devs get the funding to be able to work on the game full-time, money for licenses, help with marketing, etc, and the publisher makes some money out of it.
Meanwhile, a "AAA" company (e.g.: EA, Activision | Blizzard, T2, Ubisoft, etc) has and/or acquires studios, and then dictates ["top-down"] what games will get done or not, and how these games will be - SinglePlayer and/or MultiPlayer; Online; full-price or "freemium"; "Live Service" (early, buggy release, with loads of post-launch updates and support; plus DLCs, and all that); etc. When a "AAA" publisher acquires a studio, that studio may be given a lot of creative freedom at first, until they find their "niche" and build a dedicated audience; but eventually the publisher will pull the "reigns" and "play it safe", investing in and "green-lighting" projects that they KNOW will sell, and that they can monetize continuously in the long run.
So for example, DICE, being owned by EA, has very little say in what becomes of the "Battlefield" franchise, for instance; but three "Battlefield" enthusiasts, dissatisfied with the franchise's current state, and who know [or who are willing to learn] how to make games, can develop something like "BattleBit Remastered" to scratch their [and many other people's] "Battlefield itch"...

Many AAA companies have their hand completely tied when they have to meet certain results for their investors, while also having to deal with growing development costs... plus trying not to crunch due to the growing discontent with that practice (even if I feel like it's almost inevitable with most games during the launch window... definitely not as bad as we make it to be). An indie company doesn't have that problem: if something's costy, they can go the cheaper route and move the entire project to a new engine or working environment very quickly; if they don't meet the expected results, they don't have a whole investors base or player base behind; if they need to crunch, they will do so without a consequence and the project directors will be the first ones in doing so. Adaptability in a f'd up economy is king. Smaller companies move better than bigger ones in unstable environments. If economy was doing great worldwide, we most likely wouldn't be complaining about AAA gaming, or not as much.

Battlefield 2042 did not have a 2 billion dollar budget, you just ran with the first thing you saw on google. The 2 billion was the amount that ea’s stock fell in one day. Not the development cost of 2042. The closest a games budget will come to 2 billion will most likely be gta6 with a rumored budget somewhere between 1 and 2 billion.

Verdun is probably the best ww1 game out there and it definitely needs fresh recruits.

AAA gaming is designed for the bottom of the barrel audience.
That is the problem, the better the game is, the more focused they become. A game develops from what it was based on, when your audience comes from places with rich experience, it becomes made based on that. Hence why indies are winning, they are not just made with passion, they are built on the backbone of the vision of what an experience could be.
Like when someone played halo CE back in it's bungie years and decides they want to recreate that magic but build on it with aspects, additions and features which are balanced around the old mastery one gets from getting through the original. It's an evolution of what was old.

I think AAA games have hit a point where development cost gets too high due to the super-duper-mega-ultra-high graphic that they strive for and that they also have to compete with their previous sales even though they're past their prime. Failure to be successful at these will usually result in the studio getting axed

Battlebit's main advantages I'd argue, are its more hardcore elements in wounds/ammunition/health system, build system, it's fast TTK, more full destruction, and ability to drag comrades, something promised in BFV and never delivered. BFV did have some of these aspects, but DICE for whatever reason chose to walk that back so far that 2042 doesn't even have the ability to fucking lean.
For that, it has its cons though. No planes, no real unlocks for vehicles (afaik) or vehicle loadout compared to BF4, bit of a wonky class system that makes medics just about the only option for sustainability long-term because you have very few bandages w/o a medic and no ability to regain health otherwise. The community also prefers infantry action, and vehicle stuff is really just tacked on besides as used for transportation for the most part. FOV is also pretty wide by default, in-engine, which makes long-term engagements unbalanced in favor of those who have unlocked optics. And the spot system is a bit dodgy, and isn't utilized that much.
