Once again, appreciate you Elmo. The myth about how the Soviets treated their soldiers is one of the worst and recurring historical inaccuracies that remains in our heads. The Soviets were thrown into a struggle for their very survival, politically and as horrid as it sounds, racially. (The Nazis made it very clear that the Slavic peoples were just as bad as Jews.) The Soviet state deserves much criticism, but for the right regions. Their conduct in the early to mid war shouldn't be where that criticism lies.

People seem to not understand or appreciate that, as cheap and lazy as it is by today's standards, call of duty's recreation of scenes from movies and shows like Enemy at the Gates and Band of Brothers was done during a time back when the idea of a video game being able to faithfully recreate such scenes was a landmark innovation in game development and writing ability rather than just lazy... that and the belief that the Eastern Front WASN'T a meat grinder of unarmed troops charging machine guns wasn't common knowledge outside of historians. Remember, CoD's whole thing was to show that, unlike Medal of Honor, no soldier fights alone, that you (nearly) always have backup with you in some capacity.
Besides, World at War also parrots Enemy at the Gates with its fountain sniping scene, and people don't complain about that quite as much.

    • @anhnguyenhoang210
      @anhnguyenhoang210 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That's because it didn't parrot the heavily criticised and proven to be historically inaccurate human wave tactics, just small fragments of fighting here and there. The original vision of CoD was to honour the death of soldiers in WW2 by faithfully recreate the grim and gritty fighting of the war, not making a goddamn Hollyweed movie.
Remember, CoD 2 came out just 2 years after CoD 1 and was highly praised for its accuracies, especially in the Stalingrad campaign. Yes, the commissar still treated your soldier like dirt, but he cared enough to tell the poor sod to go get a PPSh-41 with full ammo in the armory before fighting the nutsze. That was what a commissar was supposed to do, inspire and guide the troops, not throwing unarmed soldiers into a meat grinder. Bonus point to commissar Markhov in World at War for his epic speeches and for fighting alongside his troops.

Context: They were many instances of rifle shortages in WW1 in Russian Empire, and especially in the beginning of the war after major defeats of 1914. Mainly in 1915, sometimes soldiers were thrown into the no-man's land without any weapons in order to scavenge the rifles from dead bodies (friendly and enemy alike). The Russian government was forced to order as much rifles abroad as it could, and that's how "Winchester Nagant" came to be, a Winchester that used Nagant 7.62 clips.

  • @BadgerOfTheSea

When COD first came out it was a perfect storm that people not around back then may not fully appreciate. Saving Private Ryan had completely changed the film landscape in the late 90s and Hollywood had paid attention by making WW2 films popular again (instead of milking the Vietnam cow) in a way which was still fresh in 2003 when COD came out. A month before the release of the game the WW2 film "Saints and Soldiers" came out, specifically it came out on the two year anniversary of 9/11 which leads me onto the next point. 9/11 had made the west desperate for a victory so people were looking back in time to the "glory days". For years media had been obsessed with Vietnam but that was a loss, and a tragedy to warn against. Now the media needed to do it's bit to help rally people to sign up to join the war on terror and displace the dictators of the Middle East just like Grandpa did in Europe. At the start of the year America lead a multi nation invasion of Iraq and it was still seen as a valiant thing and a great victory, not a costly forever war that was ultimately pointless like it is seen now. War was on everyone's mind and WW2 provided the perfect playground for those who wanted to cash in.

The allied airborne drops into Normandy were a disaster, but also a success. The German defenders, for varying reasons, were scrambling around everywhere trying to find these paratroopers, taking some defenders and equipment off the Atlantic wall and German soldiers further inland away from targets that the French resistance could hit.
Keep in mind, they still believed D-Day was going to happen at Calais, so the Germans defending the coast of Normandy were fewer and less equipped than the soldiers in Calais. Not to say they were a pushover, Hitler did want the entire Atlantic wall up to strength despite believing in the Calais landing. But every soldier, gun, fuel can, and bandage misplaced, lost, broken, and used in fighting the paratroopers were not gonna be there for defending the beaches come D-Day.

Well to be fair, and this is coming from someone who's grandfather actually participated in the War in a way - by fleeing after the long siege and the freezing winter came to Stalingrad. The amount of people who actually perished is quite big, and from what i understand most of those fresh conscripts really DIDN"T have weapons most of the time, being told to geniueny find one off a corpse if they wanted to live. Order 227 WAS actually in effect and people WERE executed tho not as often as portrayed. Mostly 227 was enacted on NKVD officers that FAILED in their duties, of failing to keep soviet technology out of german hands by any means necessary. With the fear of death on every officer looming above their heads, they had to enact their own draconian rules on their squads and platoons, to dissuade their own men from running away by executing them on the spot themselves.
The soviet approach, really was ruthless in a way - tossing bodies onto the enemy, hoping their would run out of bullets faster than the human wave tactics would succeed. Hell they kept doing it with penal battalions in order to cut down on important losses of their elite troops.

10:02 wait that guy saying Baker Company is that the same voice actor as in Company of heroes 1 (airborne missions)?
the whole blocking detachment and no guns.
from what I understand that was only at limited part of the front at the early stages of the war by stalingrad it was fixed
(and there is also some notes about when they say there was no guns for the men)
im not talking 100 men should have 90 rifles, 6 smg and 4 MG. what this front had was 100 rifles for 100 men and not a super lot of ammo (not as enemy of the gate or the game would portrait it 100 men 40 rifles, 5 smg and 5 pistols.

Those stealth mission which are like third of the game. Actually like half because half of russians missons feels that way too, are so anti-early cod to me. That's what I love about United offensive it feels like actual battles and british campaing feels much better desinged too with natural bombardment-resistance-SO mission story. Even "stealth" missions in UO give you more allies. First cod mission feels so uncanny and eary when you are suddenly alone.

Who would've guessed the inaccurate depiction of Order 227 and the Russian human wave tactics were just around 80 years too early and for the wrong war.
And who would've guessed ES would point out the inaccuracy of this depiction, but not that Pavlov's House probably didn't even happen.
