Keir Starmer's treatment of Diane Abbott is 'blatant racism', says Labour NEC member

  • As Keir Starmer denies that Diane Abbott has been barred from standing for the party, Tom Swarbrick speaks to Labour NEC member, Mish Rahman.
Abbott was suspended in 2023 for comments stating that Jewish, Irish and Traveller people do not face racism "all their lives".
Speaking to the BBC, Abbott said she had been barred from standing for Labour, but Starmer has now claimed that no decision has been taken as of yet.
Rahman tells Tom that the treatment of Abbott is 'blatant racism' and that the Labour Leader 'does not care about Black and Muslim people.'
He also clarifies whether he would consider leaving Labour if Abbott isn't allowed to stand.

I don't think this is about race, I think this about Starmer trying to purge as many people as he can from the party who are on the left and who have any connection/loyalty to Jeremy Corbyn, which Diane Abbott does.

Technically wrong on both counts. There's no requirement for a PM (or any cabinet position) to be an elected MP (although that is convention). The leadership of the Labour party is selected by them, and again doesn't need to be an MP (but invariably will be).
(Just pointing this out of interest - I'm sure losing his seat would be a fatally bad look in reality!)

So, rather than do the hard work of dragging the centre of politics further away from the cliff edge of pound shop fascism, he's taken the easy way out and abandoned the core values the Labour Party was founded on; to the deafening whirr of Keir Hardie doing 20,000rpm in his grave.

Racism is when a person is treated worse, excluded, disadvantaged, harassed, bullied, humiliated or degraded because of their race or ethnicity.
