    Excellent endgame study. Intuitively I would have said that the two pieces and the passer would have been enough, but that goes to prove that rooks are really strong in the endgame, when there are so many open files and ranks.

    I’m not a GM by any measure, but I sometimes resign positions where I think I could work hard and get a draw. It’s just that drawing doesn’t feel any better than losing so putting in a ton of work for a draw seems pointless. I’m not playing in tournaments though, of course.

    • @RichardEP
      @RichardEP 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you mean Bxb2, I assume it would be countered by Bc3, forcing an exchange and leaving white with a better position (black underdeveloped with no black bishop and the rook on g8 exposed) at the cost of one pawn.

    • @gabrieleloccioni6087
      @gabrieleloccioni6087 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      It is not an easy line at all. If Bxd2, white wins with Bxa5 because after blacks takes the rook on a1, white plays nc3 almost forcing the trade of bishop x night on c3 and, after white Bishop on a5 captures back, white has control of the long diagonal and way better development for the exchange. If you don't trade on c3 and try to save the bishop with something like Bb2 white gets a ton of initiative.
      If you what to snap that B2 pawn best thing to do would probably be to trade knight for bishop on B3 and then play Bxb2. I checked with the computer and it says it's equal.

    I have won a R versus N+B endgame with the rook against a strong player in a game which decided club championship.
    The issue with it when there are a few pawns on both sides of the board is that the knight cannot easily play on both sides of the board and lacking support points it can be attacked to gain tempo.

The second best move gave 1.16 and the third 2.37 which is definitely losing. Not to say that Vassily would miss Rxc5 but the time trouble and stuff, maybe resignation might be the, well probably not the best, but gentlemanish decision.

    Ivanchuk has always been somewhat of an artist and if his position looks ugly to him his play weakens considerably, or he resigns. Of course he's also a competitor so this tendency only shows up once in awhile.
