- As the drones are approaching the base, they are hijacked by cloned Kaiju brains that were planted inside causing the drones to attack the base resulting in heavy casualties. Newt (Charlie Day) and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb (Burn Gorman) attempt to stop the drones, however, Newt reveals he’s behind the drone attack and plans to end the world. But Liwen Shao (Jing Tian) is able to shut down the drones and save Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), Nathan Lambert (Scott Eastwood), and many others.

Synopsis:

@@m.devellis not sure it went that far, like yeah it wasn't great, the Jagers didn't have the sense of scale they did in the original, but if you wanted to watch giant robots fight it wasn't awful
@@rory8182 it kind of was awful though. Like the first one had fight scenes with the robots and kaiju moving slow and grounded, as if they had weight to them. In this they move like it’s normal people fighting. That sense of weight and scale made you feel like it’s something that would actually happen and when you take that away it’s just a generic popcorn flick. The fights aren’t awful on their own, but compared to the first it’s a massive downgrade.
This movie was great, it's a sequel with a good budget unlike the new Megamind and Wish.

The concept of Kaiju being able to control Jagers through viruses or their own brain was such a cool concept that could have made a great "Our monsters turned against us" scenario.
Too bad that concept was wasted on this and not used to its full potential.
those were drones, not human piloted jaegers. but yeah, it had good premise, but badly executed.
It was also used with unfulfilled potential in Godzilla KoTM, although that movie was better than this.

Well there is the Apex from Pacific Rim The Black
The Apex jaeger in the Black are the same as in this movie its just the design-wise. Apex in Black was created in the Aliens void while the apex drones are created during their initiations
Newt not being able to speak Mandarin only for him to speak it perfectly when the Precursos possess him is possibly one of my favourite set-up and pay-off examples in film.

You’re telling me that 2 puny little drone robots were able to take down the whole hanger and defeat the opposing jaegers? I mean I understand that the alien minds are probably more in sync with the drone bodies than the pilots are with their jaegers, but cmon now, those pilots can’t be that horribly trained. They practically just stood there while the drones were ripping them apart.
Well considering that the last time they ever fought a kaiju, let alone a kaiju infused to a jaeger at that, is probably zero. They had no context other then simulations they went through. Even then, the shock value of a jaeger robot becoming a kaiju was already enough to knock the wind out of their sails.

Man, infected jeager doesn't have mechanical joints and also grown some muscle.
Could you imagine if instead of all the Jägers in the movie doing ninja flips and sprinting around if it was a unique trait of the kaiju drones? How absolutely terrifying it would’ve been for these horrifying amalgamated monsters to be sprinting and jumping around at a speed that should be impossible for their size.

It would give the final fight any stakes whatsoever as the Jaegers would be outmatched and dropping like flies because of an advantage the humans mistakenly gave the kaiju, you know, like the first one
Just imagine a singular no-name jeager getting mauled to death by 2 infected drone jeager and the only thing you hear is a low yelling “get off me!!!”

As bad as Uprising is, the idea of a Kaiju/Jaegar hybrid sounds awesome and this scene shows that. Usually, you already expected where a Kaiju pop up with more than enough time to suit up and get into the robot. Here, they showed themselves so close that took everyone by surprise. If this concept is developed more, they could even possibly infiltrate from the inside.
Unfortunately, Uprising is just a mess of ideas crumpled together into a movie that strayed from what the first movie established.
You should watch pacific rim The black. it's animated in a way i'm not a fan of and the story isn't great. but the lore/ what they developed is pretty cool

I feel like a better application of the concept would be a deliberately designed Kaiju Jaeger hybrid that is alive and sentient, though still needing a pilot for control. Something evoking the feelings of Frankenstein's monster (or maybe Bioshock's Big Daddies) in a way that makes you empathize with the biomechanical monster. Comparisons could be made to Evangelion but I'm sure there'd be ways to make the concept its own.

The first movie was like a love letter to Japanese Mecha/Kaiju legacy.
The second one... well, it was clearly aimed at the chinese market.
They took away everything that made the other movie good. And they replaced it with Chinese
I’ve seen this “aimed at Chinese market” talk a few times now, but the thing is even the Chinese audience didn’t like this movie. It was just the “people speaking mandarin” part that really was trying to please the Chinese. Other than that the movie itself is a mess and it has nothing to do with pandering to the Chinese market. The movie just sucks.
@@t-blade The movie starts off by killing off the best character left, who happens to be Japanese. And the point is not even to speak Mandarin, it is to put a whole plot of a Chinese mega corporation, just to see if they could get a market in China
@@eduardoshinki9972 that is valid. Though as I said, they still failed anyway. The f’ed up so badly. (Even in China!) So it’s not that they wanted to get a market in China that made this movie flop, it had so much issues both with the movie itself and surrounding it (I’d say Toro not being involved is one big factor) that them trying to please the Chinese is no longer a “make or break” point for the movie. Uprising was going to fail one way or another.
@@t-blade It's not just about pandering to the chinese market. There is a hard limit on how many non-chinese films can be played in China and the government gets to choose which films make the cut. Film companies need to impress the government of China, not the citizens. They do this by making the chinese characters shown to be smarter and better than everyone else.

To be fair, most of them weren’t in their jeagers at the time plus all the kaijudid was shoot missiles, disabled a Kailua, opened a hanger door that was closing, shot more missiles, destroyed the head of a jeager, and that’s about it

I love the concept of the Precursor’s changing their tactics and turning the Jaegers against them it’s pretty brilliant and the drone/kaiju hybrids look fierce
Except they literally do fuck all with this actually solid plot.

If anyone remember the white angel monster from one of the movie, and the scene where Asuka was controlled by that black mecha, then they probably know what I’m talking about. True, the movie lack of some kind of gravity physic unlike the first one where the robots moves slow since it's gigantic. I just don't like that the robots here moves freely like power rangers, it irritates me. This movie have potential, just executed poorly.

the first one was a good movie, why? it was because the director was really really good on letting us know those things were really big, the robots were very slow because of that, he (the director) used things we are familiar like a ship, buildings to show us how big they were, the rain, the water maked the battles more epic, etc.
The problem with this movie its just that, this things move like they weight nothing, they are agile but no viewer believes it because its like seeing a game, u can see the actors are reacting to a green screen.
If you think about it even the fights are trash because they don't look like robots fights, they look more like human fights, the Jager reacts to damage how a human react to a wound and its really weird to see. Like Obsidian Fury who touch the sword cut like it hurts, this are more transformers like battles instead of Pacific rim battles

this is great action, and way above average special effects. the problem is, Pacific Rim set the standarts SO HIGH that potentially nothing will ever match it's until another visionary director gives a go to something as big as this.

8:49 something I just noticed, is that these more advanced and futuristic scenario makes the scene feel as not as strong as, maybe, the part in the first film where Maki almost shots the control cabine by accident.
This is my favorite part of the movie, this and the obsidian fury fights. The kaiju-drone design is badass and I loved the concept of newt being compromised and turned against humanity. Really interesting plot twist.
It still blows my mind every day that I think about this movie. They had written in CYBORG KAIJU and wasted them in less than 10 minutes. But on the bright side rewatching this scene reminds me that I actually really liked Charlie Day's acting in this movie

One of the main reason why the PACIFIC RIM was a great ROBOT movie was that the Jaegers were something that we could build for real. You could see it from every single gear and mechanical parts of every single robot that those movements and weapons were realistic.
But, the second movie just RUINED everything and those robots were just robots from anime and not from an hypothetical reality.
Del Toro shouldn’t have let Universal studios produce other movies without his supervision.
Ok im sure the second one drops the ball in a lot of ways but ngl to the think that the first pacific rim has a special level of realism is slightly headass. del toro made it animelike from the beginning with complete intention. like criticize the second one any reason but because its "not as realistic as the first one" aint it.

The saddest jaeger death in this film is definitely Murder Witch.
Murder Witch fought two drones on their own, fought them both for like 1 minute until one of the drones grabbed murder witch by both arms holding him so that he can’t doing anything while the other drone beats him up as if the drones were bullies and murder witch was getting bullied and then at 8:46 if you slow down you can see murder witch’s jaeger wrecked with a few detached parts and flames, kept their body and legs.

@@FluxIsAWeeb The problem other than the writing is that the attacks don't have that much impact to it. That and the Jaegers are just destroying buildings like they don't care unlike the first movie. Not to mention logic doesn't work if the writers doesn't want it to work, such as Gipsy Avenger and Obsidian Fury fighting on ice.
Imma give u the point about the CGI ; it was hella good but the story doesn't really make sens. Why would they keep making jaeger if there's no more Kaiju since they bombed their nest in the end of the first film ? Then, what about the precursors being able to possess the mind of Newt if they are supposed to be completly dead + merging only mean that you are able to "sync" ur mind with the one of someone else, not taking full control of it. To end that, I'd say the biggest nope is that they're having kid Jaeger. Which, for most, still behave like kids and make the movie much less serious in comparison to the first one where Jaeger could die any time if they were to do a stupid mistake.

One thing that absolutely breaks my heart regarding this franchise is how little overpowered Jaeger scenes there are. This movie is about giant robots and giant monsters not a complicated plot. All we are here for is monster guts, just show us Jaegers slicing up these fuckers into a meat pile the size of Everest and BOOM, profit.

The kaiju that got cut in half when the portal closed is goddamn huge. 9:26. If that one had made it out, definitely would have been a serious problem.
The problem with movies or sequels is that it is difficult for the audience to re-empathize with new characters, especially if the prequel was a success with the actors who participated. Pacific Rim is just one of the many examples... also happens in the series for example Spartacus (only that the protagonist had to resign due to health problems)
If they waited the first movie's director to direct the sequel that might not cause this

I mean...they're kaiju robots, that's hardly the actual problem with this movie.
It's actually the best concept this film made that could've made this better the the first film. But instead of expanding on it, they instead stuck with the same problem of the previous film.

As bad as I think this movie is, this part about the robot drones was incredible.
a really well-constructed scene, and if the film explored more about this aspect of kaiju/drones or kaiju/jeagers hybrids it would be really cool, unfortunately the work was poorly used. It would be incredibly cool to see the jeagers against the "possessed".

Despite the rest of the movie being terrible, Newton brainwashed by the Kaiju brain and being the surprise villain is probably the best plot twist lately.

Man I really loved Newt and Herman in the first movie. I haven't even seen this one yet, but it feels like a HUGE slap in the face to my balls watching what they did to our Bois.
