    Very nice, but why is the stroke so short?

    • @fasousa4798
      @fasousa4798 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      because the driving gear is limited on diameter. Stroke is limited to twice the radius of the driving arm bearing center point.

    if you lengthen the stroke on the saw, you will use more of the blade. great work as usual though.

      the diameter of the gear which the saw is on would have to be the same length as the saw blade itself in order to get a complete stroke. making this happen would require a new build because the body is not meant to house a gear that big.

    • @MaturePatriot
      @MaturePatriot 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lucas Cole - A moveable vise, or vise jaw, would be a better solution. Then you could keep the short stroke but use more of the blade as it dulls, or he could just send me the partially used blades. LOL

    • @ClimptonDiddlehopper
      @ClimptonDiddlehopper 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I was thinking the same but it's do limiting using hacksaw blades. Large items would have to have adjustable vice, strokes etc. It's just not efficient hence why the band saw type units are regularly made and work much more efficiently as well as cutting much faster. This build is great as usual but the design is not good. It's going to take much longer to cut even longer than using a hacksaw by hand sdince by hand you can get full strokes of the saw.

      It's also applying equal pressure on the retract which promotes premature blade wear. There's a reason bandsaws are superior to these.

  • @wyoblacksmithtools3097

    I really like this quality build! There are comments saying that this is for small things, but that is not true. It is about 3 to 4 times faster than doing it by hand. Finally, the precision is much better than a bandsaw, especially thin cuts. I know these things because of 50 years experience. Or, I may just be feeble? Yes, a longer stroke would be desirable. A bandsaw is a very nice machine to have too! Thanks for posting! Jerry

  • @IrishSkruffles
    @IrishSkruffles 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The short stroke of the blade is desirable for larger pieces, but with this design large pieces wouldn't fit in the vice without hitting the front sawblade holder :/
    I think an adjustable arm for the stroke and some sort of adjustable clamping system would be the best way to maximise what you can cut as well as the life of the blade, but this is what this channel is about - cool functional items that people can draw inspiration from :)
    Keep it up guys, I'd love to see a homemade metal lathe next.. It would be quite the challenge getting it precise and rigid enough.. IIRC, back in WW2 some factories made the frames of large lathes out of concrete instead of expensive cast iron, perhaps you could use a similar construction method.

    • @bobalong131
      @bobalong131 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      adjustable arm would only change blade placement not stroke, which would still be useful though in this case. To change stroke he'd need to modify the crankshaft/crank gear thing.

    • @dejayrezme8617
      @dejayrezme8617 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking one way would be to use a nema34 cnc stepper motor and lead screw for the motion. Then you could adjust the stroke length and the design might be more compact.

      In my experience bandsaws (especially horizontal bandsaws) can have the blade slip off the wheels and get stuck in the part, very annoying when you walk away and return to find the blade stuck and your part not cut. You don't have that issue with this type of saw.

    • @crpth1
      @crpth1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Although I like the cut speed of a decent circular saw. I´ll leave a question.
      You guys know how much a circular carbide blade cost, right?
      For the same price I can get about 70 to 90 of this much cheaper blades!
      Of course they don´t last as much, etc, etc. but it´s easy to understand.
      By now I´ve got white hair, but when I was a teenager at mechanical school. For bigger stock we used this type ONLY. ;-)

    Needs adjustable stroke , but even more needs to lift on backstroke to save unnecessary blade wear. This design will wear blades twice as fast as necessary. With these mods great machine. Blades aren't cheap

      The saw is cutting on backstroke - it's the forestroke which needs lifting!

    Very good saw congratulate you. I know that many have opined but, mine is a suggestion, the ones I've seen bought, have a cam on the reducer that raises the saw when it advances so it does not touch and wear this way your saw will last twice, congratulations.

    Some folks might think "a band saw would be quicker" and they would be right. Why a power hacksaw? Much more accurate. Like cutting the pipe with a really short cut making a washer. Can't do that with almost any other cutting tool.

    Esta muy bien logrado pero solo se puede ocupar la mitad de la hoja de cierra si corrieras la mordasa fija 10 cm para atras ocuparias casi el total de la hoja igualmente esta buenisimo y me encanta todo lo que hacen.

    If you made the clamp/vice moveable, you could use new sections of the blade when those two inches get dull.

    think you need to make the pushrod adjustable in length so you can use another part of the blade if the first bit gets dull

  • @TheKeyote
    @TheKeyote 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very awesome. I would make the back stop adjustable so you could move the work to different parts of the blade, that way you could get more life out of the blade. That and lengthen the stroke a little.

    Needs more power and an adjustment to where you don't only use one small section of the saw blade. 2.0?

    Awesome:) hmmm... I wonder if what would happen if it went readily fast and a switch turns off the machine when the blade reaches the bottom or slows down the lower the blade is like a timer so fast when large cut and normal speed when small

    It is advisable to lift the blade in return/not cutting stroke to increase blade life.

    Το πριόνι πρέπει να έρθει λίγο πιο μπροστά και να βάλετε μια "μπιέλα" πιο μεγάλη για να κάνει μεγαλύτερη διαδρομή. Έτσι όπως είναι τώρα μένει ανεκμετάλλευτο μεγάλο εύρος. Κατά τα άλλα, εξαιρετική ιδέα και ακόμα πιο εξαιρετική υλοποίηση! Μπράβο παιδιά!
