    I grew up in the vicinity of the Queen Mary. Have spent many many days there, even overnight. I remember my sister-in-law had a baby beauty pageant on the ship and I was one of the judges. I stayed in one of the unrenovated rooms that looked just like it did when soldiers were being transported. It was SO fascinating. The headboards had numbers on them. The bathtub was original and so deep I was covered up to my chin when I got in. I also was amazed at the bathtub fixtures. There were two faucets, one saying fresh water and another labeled seawater. I thought that was so cool. I'll have to go back now that it's been remodeled and refreshed.

    In the 1990’s I stayed at the Hotel Queen Mary about 5 times. One of these times was for an eight night stay. Since I have relatives living in the area I often used this hotel as a base. After I got married I last visited the Queen Mary in 2006. In 2004 I also sailed on the Queen Mary 2 during its inaugural year. Please keep this ship safe and sound for future generations. It’s a great place to visit and stay!

    The Queen Mary is an historical treasure and has played an important role in history. She should be preserved for as long as possible for all to enjoy and learn from. Once shes gone there will never be another like her. I wish they had left the Spruce Goose next door in the dome. It was fun to see along with the Queen Mary.

    Hi Alex, could you please make a video about what Queen Mary Hotel guests can expect? So like which areas of the ship are freely accessible, where are meals served etc. I would like to know a bit more about this and I'm sure the viewers would appreciate this insight too. Thanks!

    Just watched a vid from the 1970s posted today to YT about the QM & produced for the Wrather Corp. Didn't know that life boat demonstrations, with them being raised & lowered, took place back then. Over 400 hotel rooms on the ship were available under Wrather & that today seems quite ambitious. A lot of effort was invested in the nearby English-style village too. I wonder what attendance was like over 35 years ago? But the village, located quite far from the ship, probably always had so-so returns. Retail is a tough business & dead malls are all over America. So the village being torn down this year is long overdue. But the QM itself needs a lot of guaranteed TLC

    As usual, great video Alex! I've visited and stayed on the Mary many, many times, and have been reading and watching tv shows/videos about her for 51 years, so I know almost everything there is to know about her... I think you should make a video to educate people about the 56 different woods and veneers used in her construction; six of which are now extinct!

    I just want to point out that this ship was saved by governmental action. Thanks to folk like you, the city realized that it could run the ship at profit whereas none of the private firms could. This is yet another example of the current 'private market' narrative.

      Guess Long Beach realized what a tourist draw the Queen has been. Without it, Long Beach would just be another industrial-looking port. The ship put Long Beach on the map as a vacation/tourism destination. Anaheim has Disneyland, Long Beach has the Queen. Long live the Queen!

    Great documentary! How do they paint the hull with it moored in water?

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      When the ship was docked in New York or Southampton, the deck hands would hang from ropes and paint much of the ship, while another crew used the lifeboats to stand on while they were lowered down the sides of the hull and painted it that way.
      In Long Beach, with the ship retired, they hang scaffolding off the sides of the ship and move the scaffolding down the length of the ship. And to paint the funnels, sometimes they surround it in scaffolding, but most recently they did it the old fashioned way with painters hanging from ropes off the side of the funnels.

      @@AlextheHistorian I guess what I really want to know is how do they paint the sections below the waterline now that it is stationary at Long Beach. If they neglect those parts wouldn't the sea-water rot the steel hull?

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @MrSFSTUDIOS They haven't painted the underwater part of the hull since 1969. The paint hasn't worn away because the ship is stationary. And they have a system of Sacrificial Cathodic Anodes that have protected the hull from seawater corrosion. To this day, the hull plates are still an inch thick.

      I tried to tell people over and over through the years. I only make videos about things I'm interested in. I'm not interested in the SS United States. I'm not even interested in most things after World War II, just stuff before it. Let me also add, that in at least 2 videos I HAVE mentioned the SS United States as extensively as I could. But those must have been videos you missed.
