You know, It's incredible how cool and nice and down to earth Max Baer Is... After watching him play Jethro I realize how gifted an actor he is for playing that part. What a great man and God bless you Max.

Max played a great character in the Hillbillies sitcom. One of my favorites. Excellent job Max!
He played the perfect role as Jethro. He was just a natural actor with little to no training. I cannot imagine anyone else playing the role. He was so good I can see him being type casted. Just like Bob Denver of Gilligan’s Island.
Yeah, but Denver went on to have a great singer-songwriter career, with hits like 'Country Roads', 'Rocky Mountain High', and others in the early to mid 70's before unfortunately being killed in a plane wreck.
What a classic comedy!! Will live forever in our hearts. Sad that today's shows can't compare.
But when it was made they said it was sad that in couldn't compare with the Keystone cops,.....Go figure?

BEVERLIES HILLBILLIES was on the same level as AMOS AND ANDY. It caused much heartache for people from the south who found themselves among ignorant Yankees.
Jethro Bodine is an iconic character in TV history, right there with Barney Fife.

It was an awesome show and one of my favorites back then . Jethro was absolutely hilarious ! He played the part perfectly. Actually the whole cast was great really !! Max always made me laugh. Off screen he is a really nice guy too. Thanks for all the laughs you gave us Max. Always find memories when thinking about

Jethro Bodine one of the funniest characters ever on TV, Max Baer, Jr will forever be remembered for that character, forever apart of my 60s childhood, the show was hilarious, the movie that was made I think during the 90s could never do it justice, glad he is still with us so far and RIP to all the cast members that have gone on, a show like that in today's climate would never see the light of day..
Max sounds like a genuine class act guy....as a kid loved watching Beverly Hillbillies it was something my older brother and parents would gather around the TV for every Saturday night and enjoyed the show.
Glad that Max is still going strong and doing well. Thanks for the laughs and good family shows.

Wow! So refreshing to hear his genuine old fashioned gratitude. And respect for his Beverley Hillbilly costars. Thank you Max Baer. For Jethro, and being such a stand up guy.
Mr.Baer was extremely talented. My father remembered seeing his dad 'in the ring'. He always told me that every time the show came on. I always watched 'Max's' career. An incredibly talented man and very well learned. He had a fantastic mind for business. I cannot count the number of 'shows' that he worked on behind the scenes.
Max Baer passed away in 1959 (Max Baer Jr. was only 23 at the time)--he has said that Buddy Ebsen (who was good friends with Max Baer Sr.) essentially became his surrogate father and took him out on his sailboat (Mr.Ebsen was an accomplished sailor) and on many other excursions. Donna Douglas (Elly May) also said that she came to love Mr. Ebsen like a father for the way he treated her.
I was thrilled to learn that Max, Jr. had an uncle in the movies who played a giant with Abbott and Costello.
I love when cast members keep in touch with each other long after the shows over. Because it shows how close they've gotten over the years working together weather it was before, during, or after they were selected for those roles.

After watching all the episodes I have to say he was actually a very good actor. Yes there’s the type casting but no one else could ever have do that part easy or not.
Great show I watch the reruns all the time. Max was great as Jethro. Miss Jane was so smitten with him, that was so funny. This was such a nice interview where everyone got along and it was a pleasant experience.

MAX BAER!!--if you ever read this--THANK YOU for being a FUN part of my youth (I was born in 1956) on TV, and of course especially on THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES. For kids, TV characters are weekly friends you come to know, revisit, and treasure from episode to episode. Once on the TV in your home they become like extended family. The absurdity of sitcoms isn't a factor of disbelief for kids, at least, when the storytelling and characters are so strong and lovable, and Jethro was always a fond part of the equation. Despite how entertaining the show has been, I've greatly enjoyed listening to this interview and hearing you speak about and for yourself. Thank you again--Don in Indiana (age 67).

As one of the contributors on her stated Granny and Jethro made the show. I always looked forward to Max's scenes.
My favourites where the episodes where tried to be a "Double nought spy."

Just rewatched Ode To Billy Joe, on TCM, a great movie I first saw at the drive in, as a youth. I was quite surprised to learn that Max Baer was the director. He was a skilled filmmaker.
If you haven't seen it, also check out "Macon County Line". He wrote it, directed it, and played the sheriff in it. Excellent movie, it came out around that same time.

Still a 'go to' movie for me. It paints such a romantic picture of the southern states - plus Glynnis O'Connor whom I had a crush on and James Best at his pre-Rosco P. Coltrane best.

The reason the show is still on and still popular is because you have likable characters you have attractive characters you have good writing and you have funny situations and a show that is genuinely funny and enjoyable to watch. That's all there is to it. It's also the formula of the little man triumphing over the snobs. And the general public always likes that.
Besides ALL that , being a SITCOM about Hillbillies the Way they took everything somebody Said LITERALLY is what made the show So Funny! .
I read that when Max Baer Jr. came to audition for the part of Jethro he was incredibly nervous. Just before his audition, they broke for lunch and Irene Ryan ("Granny") decided to take him out to lunch and essentially got him hammered. When he returned he was calm and completely nailed the audition and got the part of Jethro

Very classy guy nowadays people could learn from him I'm sure there was bad times on the show everything has bad times. But he chose to hold the show up and the people that he worked with in my mind Max Baer is a classy guy
I highly doubt there were bad times. They made good money and had camaraderie on the set and an incredibly nice job and lived very good lifestyles in an era when Southern California was a paradise.
I watch the beverly hillbillies every night on TH-cam all night long in bed,it's always on.

He was brilliant, the whole cast was,but it wouldn't have been the same without Max at all.He was brilliant and so full of energy.

The overall premise of the BHB helped viewers synthesize how they utilize common mechanisms as applies to time period.
What a down to earth,and gracious person,so very friendly, always liked the hillbillys show !
My Father said "Boxing is a Religious sport, it's better to give than receive" One of the best quotes of all time, because it's funny ....and it's TRUE!!
He is a Lot smarter than I thought he was watching the show back in the 60s. It was a great fun show. They had great fun ideas for shows back in the 60s that were pure entertainment. They werent trying to be hip or urban. We were still closer to our country roots. Max is the last one left. They were all unique talents.
I remember my dad watching him, he made him laugh so hard, talk about fond memories.....

I loved watching the show, way back when there were only 3 channels to choose from. I still live seeing the reruns today.
Great article from the 80s or 90s, trying to think of the publication, about Jethro and his love of the Trader Vic's at Merv Griffin's Beverly Hilton. Stayed there in the mid -90s and didn't see him but it is/was a great venue and he was such a beloved performer. Would have loved going out drinking with him !

Thank you to anyone and everyone who had anything to do with making The Beverly Hillbillies show. I am turning 62 now and you were a good influence in my life.
The show was all lovable. I have had some of the best "stomach-aching" laughter when I was watching The Beverly Hillbillies. I just could't feel more thankful.

It just hit me. When he is gone there wont be any more living icons from that show to keep it alive in our minds. Those of us who saw the show in its heyday will have no one alive we can see that was one of its major cast members! It all will just be a memory! Like smoke from a cigarette, like a dream you wake up from, it just fades away.

I didn't know that he had conceived and produced those hit TV movies after the show ended. Those were some great stories, and his good-natured, self-effacing attitude really comes through in them.
He was able to carve out a different career behind the scenes as his acting career was hurt by being typecast as "Jethro"
When they made the remake of The Beverly Hillbillies whoever chose JETHRO should have been fired. that guy had the goofiest smile all the time Jethro was cool. Max did a great job playing that character

Somewhere around 1973, I was in 5th grade, my dad made a phone call answering Max’s ad for old cars(my dad had worked with Max in construction here in Sacramento so was friends with him and he collected old cars )for Macon County Line in the Delta. My dad was older and not in the best of health at the time. Max told him he would use his cars and put the family in the movie but dad said no. I was bummed but begged to speak with Jethro. Max the perfect gentleman spoke patiently with me while I asked him many questions lol but the 1 question I will never forget asking him was, “ do you really just have a fifth grade education?” He answered laughing “ no darling!” See I was trying to get out of school really. And my teacher was a descendant of Mark Twain at the time.True story
I met Max in Lake Tahoe about 10 years ago, he was promoting his new bbq sauce products, great guy and the women loved him.

For me any scene where Granny is all over Jethro's case for doing what he was not supposed to do or what he wasnt supposed to do and didn't. Just watched first couple seasons that Paul Henning wrote and they were Sooo funny. Can't believe Irene Ryan Never nor Max got Emmys for their roles - IMHO, outstanding performances!!
Never heard him interviewed before. I assumed he'd be a nice person, but he still really impressed me. Would love to meet him in person. He and his Hillbillies cast mates were always brilliant, even when the stories were a bit silly.

Like Frank Banks (the actor who played Lumpy on Leave It To Beaver) Max Baer made much more money as a businessman than he ever made as an actor. His highest salary on The Beverly Hillbillies was $140,000 a year. At age 85 he has a net worth of 50 million.

I remember seeing a very short clip (2-5 seconds) of him chowing down at a table with all manner of food for a bistro commercial back in the 1970s. I remember getting so excited thinking, "Hey!! It's JETHRO!!"
Your dad would have been so proud of he had gotten to see you play Jehro on the Show...he probably would have said: "That's MY boy up there on the TV screen!"
Sounds like Donna planted some seeds in his heart. May they bear fruit.
You’d never think of him as an introvert.
It was great to hear him speak, very lucid, intelligent and confident. In addition to being well known on TV, his father was a world famous boxer that is a fact, but he still sounds humble. Also glad to hear him talk about "Ode to Billie Joe" the movie he produced/shot in Mississippi. I know that area personally. My favorite skits on the TV show were his double-naught spy and Mrs. Potts finishing school (6th grade) where he was a "cipherin" genius! LOL. And of course his interactions with "Miss Jane" Hathaway!

My favorite Jethro segment was when they thought he was a movie stuntman and were going to blow him up in a shed, so he came home. Uncle Jed sent him back saying, "Go on back there boy and show'em what you're made of."

Ikr classics are classics for a reason. They stand the test of time. Just like the BH! Classics live on far longer than those who acted in them, and that makes the actors/actresses immortalized.
My favorite was craw dads. We went after that calling joints and say "Hey, wanta smoke a Craw Dad" Epic
I hope Max was able to renegotiate his contract quickly, because being paid scale as a star attraction on a hit show is criminal.
