Thank God that Buddy Ebsen was one of the few actors who wasn't typecasted and managed to make everybody forget about Jed Clampett in his Barnaby Jones role.

I have his autograph, and he was very nice to send me it through the mail with a nice inscription. My friend met him, and said he was like meeting your grandfather.

Buddy Ebsen was an original choice for "The Wizard of Oz" but had an alergic reaction to aluminum paint. Vaudevillian, hoofer, character actor, American Hero!

You know, Buddy was an interesting man. i never knew him despite being a close neighbor for some time. he was dignified, respectable but you can imagine all us kids around his house all the time thought of him a bit if a "screwdge" which was probably unfair. his awesome beachfront house sat on one of the most playful boardwalk spots on the island, ironically. just short walk from ferry and a grand carosel lighting his house from across Balboa Bay each magical summer night in SoCal. but how i could frequent the perimeter of his home regularly for 20 years growing up (in summers) and never even see the man once, allows a curios flavor to persist. in fact his house for a time was practically adjacent to the YMCA kids pier, furing which times not less than 60 kids could be found blocking the piece of his bayview windows. his home was one of the first to have real major walls and gate disallowing even a peak at the small yard and entry area. having skated, walked or biked past hundreds of times i never even saw it open. but I'll always have a respect for the man and knowledge that his family and ours shared a special place and magic niche in our world. and i never heard a negative from him or his, from anyone, over all those years.
He was also a great singer!!

A wonderful movie that Buddy starred in was "Captain January" with Shirley Temple.
Try to see it for the "surreal" dance numbers. Both he and Shirley are adorable in it!
His legwork in those dance numbers was simply amazing!

I live in France now and my French husband is very interested in American movies (and stuff) and I hope to find something of Ebsen I can show him cuz I remember this really interesting person in showbiz. He wrote, too. I am looking for a famous surreal dance he did.

This must be what I am looking for. I think just about a low point in Ebsen's career was a special with the Cowsills. How he got stuck in that mess, I cannot even imagine!
