What a wonderful video. To hear the stories of how his competitors talked about him and the way that he would go out of his way for the families that worked with him and the children shows his big heart. Boxing is a very hard sport, and anyone who can take a punch and win the championship, it says a lot about their endurance, their physical and mental strength, and there's strong will. An American professional boxer and the world heavyweight champion 1934, referee, announcer, actor. RIP: Max Baer, born Maximilian Adelbert Baer, February 11, 1909 - November 21, 1959, age 50
What a wonderful remembrance of someone who "got knocked down and got up again". He had the ability to repackage himself, and his marvelous attitude toward his fellow athletes is noteworthy. Thank you for today's episode.
Very good episode. As a Catholic, I must mention, the prayer you read, shows how people read. It was meant to be read left to right, line by line. As you are not Catholic, you're forgiven, I love that you recited it. What a life Max Baer lived...he didn't miss a thing. Big man, big heart and big personality. May he RIP. 🙏🏻❤
I blame the designer... Jeff is so articulate and thorough, he's a stickler for things. I don't blame him and, I think he kinda knew something was off...just went with it. Still excellent content. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I met Max when I was about 5 years old at Taylor’s Market, located at 4th Ave and Freeport Blvd in Sacramento. My parents always shopped at Taylor’s. One Saturday afternoon Roy Taylor called my dad and said Bob (my dad’s name), bring John (me) down here. Max Baer is in the store and I’ll introduce you both to him. As a four year old I didn’t know who he was so my dad gave me a few highlights on the five minute drive to Taylor’s. I remember even now that Max got down to my level and shook my hand. I remember his hand appeared big and quite fleshy. The moment is clear, even now. On another note, Joe Lewis was known for knocking opponents out in the early rounds. One time a reporter asked Max Baer how he described fear. Max said fear is looking across the ring at Joe Lewis knowing he wants to go home early. Thanks for dredging up that fond memory.
What an amazing short history on Max Baer Sr. !! I had never really done any research on him, but find him to be a nice guy with a sense of humor and was apparently one awesome fighter. Thanks again Jeff for a look back at people and places we had forgotten.
My aunt and uncle lived in Van Nuys in the early 1980's. Max Baer Jr. was their back fence neighbor, he had gotten the actual "cement pond" from the series installed into that backyard. My uncle had lifted me up so I could see into the backyard. Max was a great neighbor in that neighborhood, according to my aunt and uncle. RIP to Max Sr. Thank you.
Happy Father’s Day Jeff! Loved watching The Beverly Hillbillies in the 60’s and reruns. I had heard something about Max Baer’s dad being a boxer. That is awesome that Junior had the cement pond put in his backyard. Those sitcoms from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s seemed so innocent compared to now.
Another great look at a fascinating person. I grew up watching reruns of Beverly Hillbillies and I always enjoyed Max Baer, Jr. Now I know about his father. Have an awesome day!
Thank you Jeff, i didn’t know who he was at all. Like most people I definitely knew who his son was. He was born he same year as my grandfather 1909 but luckily for me I got to be with my grandfather until he was 84. Max died way to young, thank you for sharing his story with me. ❤️Jodie 🇦🇺
I have heard of Mr. Max Baer, A Wonderful Boxer and a Human Being. I loved the Presentation of Life. His Son Max Baer who plays Jethro in the Beverly Hillbillies, is the Splitting Image of his Dad. A Great Video,👍👍 RIP Mr. Max always 🙏🙏. Jeff Happy Father's Day!
Very good video Jeff. I was raised in Livermore and lived there from 1961 till 2001. Max Baers house was pointed out to me by a bus driver taking us to summer camp. It was near the West end of Wetmore Ave. I brought it up on Google maps and was saddened to see it is gone. Oh well. Keep up the great work. I hope we cross paths someday. I am a proud seventh gen resident of our still great state. 🇺🇸
Too often we never know the back story of so many of those who not only entertained us on the big and little screen. But now, you have started again to show us those stories of those who are or were in the athletic world or motor sport world. You did a story on a football player which for me was fascinating. I never knew anything about Max Baer until today. Your mind is a treasure for us who do not even think on the level that you do. Thank you again for a great history lesson.
I have of course heard of Max Baer, but was not aware of the type of person he was. He seemed to be a man of honor, humor and a tremendous athlete. Thanks Jeff
One of your best episodes, Jeff! Your attention to detail and presentation are unrivaled. The Baer family was widely known in Sacramento, where I grew up. Much appreciated video.
@dianeadams..👍agree one of the best episodes.. first episode I actually replayed twice ...listened to it the first time second time I viewed the video. Outstanding!🙏
