I think he's a genuine nice guy. He did some funny, funny stuff on Beverly Hillbillies. He added a lot of joy to millions of Americans. I always wish him good health and happiness.
There was nothing funnier than an afternoon of Beverly Hillbillies, Adams Family, Get Smart and a few others. What a way to come home from grammar school. I’m so glad I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s. Nothing like that with todays tv, it’s all bad vibes.

Wow!! What a trio of talent, Rip to all actores from the show that left us ..always a big fan since the late 70s and into the 21st century.. what a joy to see them together and that whistle from Donna ..always on point..
I remember watching 👀 "The Beverly Hillbillies " when I was a little girl. I remember the show coming on in the mid morning around 11:00 AM. I loved the show it was HILLARIOUS!
When I was 12 years old 1972. He was signing autographs at a Celebrity baseball game Irvine Calif.. As I handed him Paper for an autograph, he was holding a whole sandwich in 1 hand, a beer in the other. He shoved the sandwich in one bite, held the beer in his lips and graciously signed autograph to me. He is a Big Man with a Big Heart.
What a fun show that was each and every actor played their parts so well they were so believable. I think that Max Bear is the coolest name going, he still looks great.
You can see the love that Max Baer had/has for his dad. I wish I would have had a dad like that. It's so sad that he lost him at such an early age. Life can be so, so cruel sometimes.
I read a story that Max Baer Jr's dad Max Sr's. punch as a boxer was so powerful that one of his opponents died from being knocked out, and the story indicated that the deceased boxers brain stem was broken loose. Max Jr.is a class act and a great actor.
@@stevekelley7738 his father is accredited with killing two men in the ring. One died in the ring one died in a fight 2 months later but it was credited to him because it was a blood clot that was caused by Max.😮
@@NotMoriarty1 Yes, it was 2 men, but in both cases (especially the last) they cannot be definitively "accredited" to Baer Sr. Jr. has argued this point in defense of this dad for years, and I am persuaded he is correct. Others may and do disagree, but his having held the championship for so short a time seems to negate the reputed power of his punches, and highlights the frailties and weaknesses of some of his opponents. . My opinion.
He sure loved his daddy. One interesting story was when Max Jr indicated to dad that he wanted to box himself. Max Sr. , who was dead set against this, had to show Jr. what it was like to face a professional boxer. Jr. stuck with acting from that day on.
Max Baer's movie, Macon Count Line, held the record for years as the lowest budgeted movie that grossed the most money. I think it was Blair Witch Project that shot it out of the saddle. MCL still has a cult following to this day. Also, Ode to Billie Joe, which he purchased the rights to turn it into a movie, made for TV I think as that's where I saw it, was brilliant. Ties up a lot of loose ends in the song. He is a stout one, too. Buddy Ebson credited him with saving his life on the set of BH, when a stunt went wrong and the old truck would have crushed him had "Jethro" not held it up off him. He's really quite a guy. One of my faves. No one could have played the part of Jethro with as much verve.
Actually I do believe Night of the Living Dead had grossed more but I could be wrong. That film costs all of 2500 dollars to make. It went on the make money in 77 different countries. It is up there for sure.
@@blu3collar949 I think it is in the running, but wiki says the budget was set at $100K but ended up at $114K. Also, its U.S.box office earnings -- 12-15mil --came after a decade. $30 mil internationally, but doesn't say in what span of time. In earnings in relation to costs of production ratio, It could very well be, but I read somewhere Macon County Line held that record, and have heard Baer say so himself in an interview. Interesting about Night..., though. Thanks for bringing it up. At any rate, Blair Witch Project, which looks like it was shot on a cell phone, kicks both their butts. LOL
I still watch this show at 58 .. I first watched it at my grandmas house in Arkansas which I spent summers there growing up. I have probably watched every episode and I laugh every time I watch..hilarious 🤙🏼
"Jethro Bodine" one of the funniest characters ever on TV, there hasn't been anything on TV like him since and probably will never be again, the " Golden Age of T V" gone but not forgotten, well done Max Baer, Jr f orever "Jethro "..
I saw Max play in a celebrity softball game on TV. Man, he got a hold of one and sent it into orbit. He was a big strong man. Then, I believe, he went on to be a very big Hollywood director/producer.
Macon County Line did $30,000,000 at the box office. It cost only $225,000 to make. That's merit by any definition. Baer co-wrote, produced, and starred in the film. Two years later he directed and produced Ode to Billy Joe that returned over $36M on a budget of $1.1M. I'd say there's some merit there. That being said, with many thousands of people active in the movie business and very few at the top at any given time, I do not think Max Baer Jr has ever qualified as "big time". His bitterness more likely stemmed from getting almost no money from the Beverly Hillbillies show being syndicated.
So was Ken Curtis who played Festus. Gracie Allen was also a very smart cookie. Loved her a lot...totally bummed as a child when I heard of her death in 1964. She obviously retired in 57 for medical reasons.
The rehearsals necessary to carry that show's timing off! The genius to stay in character. It might've all seemed slap-stick . . . but they all stayed in character . . . made it so that they weren't "slap-stick". They were innocence in a world that bordered on insanity. Genius . . . the authors, directors, performers. Even the laugh track was not out of place.
My great grandfather was a sports turf reporter for the LA Times. He knew Max Baer Sr personally. He celebrated with him with cigars when Max Baer Jr was born. I had an old photo in my baby book of a photo of Max Baer Sr and his wife in front of a Christmas tree from the forties. I always wondered it's significance. My mom told me that Max Sr had given it to her grandfather. Wish I still had it!
Even though Max Baer Jr was Typecast as Jethro and could no longer find acting roles, he moved over to producing and directing and was quite successful! His current net worth is over 50 million dollars!
Serves as a great example that the world changes and people have to adapt. He could have sat around and whined about it in poverty or done the sad alternative of showing up at county fairs as a has-been like so many other stars of the 60s have done. He chose to change with the times instead of cry about it.
" Baer wrote and produced the drama Macon County Line (1974), in which he played Deputy Reed Morgan. It was the highest-grossing movie per dollar invested at the time. Made for just US$110,000, it earned almost US$25 million at the box office. This record lasted until The Blair Witch Project broke it in 1999" Baer also conceived and directed the very successful film "Ode to Billy Joe" Unfortunately it seems his casino project fell through due to issues with building/zoning codes, and conflict with neighboring developers.

And ten year old Me got to go With him to the store and 'Help' him work the vacuum tube battery tester there, just as ubiquitous in the late 1950's as the ATMs are today!
Yes, I remember the tube tester well. Us kids would walk around the town on garbage day, looking for old TV's that were being thrown out, and would pull all the tubes out and take them home. Then dad would drive us to the Nedisco store (our electronics chain in northern NJ) and we'd test all the tubes, keeping the ones that seemed to have life left in them, but we never got new ones. Then, back home, to try them out. It basically stayed that way until I got into high school, when we finally got a newer Panasonic transistor TV.

One of the questions asked was about 'the mother'. While its true Elly's mom (Uncle Jed's wife) had died, Jethro's mom 'was' part of the cast. Cousin Pearl.
Yep, Bea Benaderet was "Cousin Pearl," who also played the fabulous matriarch Kate Bradley in Petticoat Junction. Now, look up "rural purge" to see how television execs began trashing American TV culture by killing THEN-TOP-RATED-SHOWS like Hillbillies/Petticoat/GreenAcres/etc.
I was always trying to put the family connections together. Here's what I think is right. Jed is Elly's Dad. Jed is Jethro's Uncle Jetro's mom is still alive and is granny's sister. Granny is Jed's Mother in law. I saw an episode where she refers to Jed as her son-in-law. So that means that Jed was married to one of Granny's daughters who is now dead. Granny really is a grandmother to Elly and Jethro but not to Jed even though he calls her granny. Jethro and Elly are cousins to each other. They make no mention of Jethro's dad.
Jed was married to Granny’s daughter, (Ellie’s mother), who passed. Jed and Pearl are cousins. Pearl isn’t Granny’s sister, as she’s related on Jed’s side of the family. Pearl is referred to as widow in the show.
Sometime an actor gets typecast as a certain character, and it possibly hurts their future career. Yet in a way, it is a tribute to to their great acting acting ability in that they are talented enough to make people see them only as the character.
His ideas for the casino were awesome. I would have loved it. It's too bad that it never came to fuition. It's even sadder that he got typecast, because he is a truly talented actor.
My dad went to school in Sacramento with Max and he told me his dad Max Bear the fighter was great to all the kids in the neighborhood and once gave him and Max jr $20 to go out and have fun. $20 was a lot of money in the late 50s

Yes. Jerry Springer did a REAL talk show with legitimate guests and audiences.
I'm shocked at how low key and professional this is.
Shocking
He''s pushing now 80 looks great
no way he was 80 here ! You are wrong.
81
What a lovely man gave everybody great memories of better time thank you
Max Baer, Jr has an impressive acumen for business. He also had a slightly younger brother who also acted.
The old jeep from this show is at a little museum on the campus of College of the Ozarks outside of Branson, Missouri.
Jerry Springer interviewing hillbillies?
That is not something you see everyday.
the yyyygggggggbvgud
Truth
Michael maybe not but he sure has interviewed a lot of dumbbells
michaelterry1000 lol good one
Max grew up in the L.A. area. He was the son of World Heavyweight boxing legend Max Baer.
He’s still humble. I love that, and that he’s still with us despite his past with drugs. ♥️
He'd have to be humble to portray his characters Jethro and Jethrine
I guess I never realized just how big he was. He looks like he would have made a really good Mob heavy hitter type in the movies !
Jethro, and Granny the funniest characters
on the Beverly Hillibillies.
لف
I was always trying to put the family connections together. Here's what I think is right.
Jed is Elly's Dad.
Jed is Jethro's Uncle
Jetro's mom is still alive and is granny's sister.
@@im1who84u and you have the chicken and the rooster............WHO"S GOING WITH THE HEN?
Jed was married to Granny’s daughter, (Ellie’s mother), who passed.
Jed and Pearl are cousins.
Pearl isn’t Granny’s sister, as she’s related on Jed’s side of the family.
Pearl is referred to as widow in the show.
Sometime an actor gets typecast as a certain character, and it possibly hurts their future career. Yet in a way, it is a tribute to to their great acting acting ability in that they are talented enough to make people see them only as the character.
Max was great on the show. I always loved how he and Granny played off of each other.
Thank You Loader. It nice to see them again.
Max should’ve played Li’l Abner. He would’ve been perfect.
Great to see this ..thank you for posting it....
Some one needs to have a loooong talk with that boy.
You're saying "sorry" for the video quality? Please....I am SO GRATEFUL to you for sharing this. What a wonderful person you are !! Thanks so much !
His ideas for the casino were awesome. I would have loved it. It's too bad that it never came to fuition. It's even sadder that he got typecast, because he is a truly talented actor.
Max has manners. He said Sir to the host. The casino never did take off.
WHAT A KIND SOUL,THANKS FOR BEING JETHRO, JETHRINE AND MOST OF ALL THANKU FOR BEING YOU MAX BAER, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES TOO!!!
Springer actually seemed like a real host here.
Amazingly
He started off as one. Was not till later he got sleazy.
My dad went to school in Sacramento with Max and he told me his dad Max Bear the fighter was great to all the kids in the neighborhood and once gave him and Max jr $20 to go out and have fun. $20 was a lot of money in the late 50s
Max is so good looking..
Yes he was!!
Thanks so much for this clip. I wondered what Max Baer, Jr's. real speaking voice was like.
Not unlike Ken Curtis who played Festus.
Donna Douglas was and still is right here, very beautiful!!!
Unfortunately she passed a few years ago from cancer.
She died in 2014, at age 80.
VHS quality 😎 and I still miss those days
Oh gosh its been a minute on this. Some may think wtf would someone post stuff like this but I love seeing time capsules. The things 2 people you may never see have talks. Thank you for the video share.
Max sure was a smart man. god bless Jethro B.
Not really, he only made it to sixth grade
