Done 1000 miles in my MG4 SE LR in the week I’ve had it. Safety systems are dangerous and need turning off. Performance is nice and rapid charging is MEGA! Did 22-80% on Ionity in 23 mins, hitting 142kW for quite a while. Seats are all day comfortable. Efficiency is average at best, 3.5mi/kWh on the motorway at 66mph, across country got 4.

Which of the saftey system are dangerous, lane assist, adaptive cruise control? I am considering the Trophy version of the car due the 360 cam, but if the tech is rubbish or dangerous it'll be a pass for me.

Thanks for mentioning the charging speed which they didn’t talk about in the video. This is the only down-side of our Kia e-Niro which we’ve had since March 2019, it was one of the first to come into the country (we live in France) and even form low SOC the best we’ve seen is 75Kw...which it doesn’t maintain for very long. Your efficiency though does seem disappointing given that the car sits lower and looks a lot more ‘slippery’ than the e-Niro. Our winter/summer average over 70,000 km is 14.5 kWh/100 km (4.27 miles/kWh)...yesterday I did 100 km of local driving around the Poitou-Charente...nice empty roads, gently rolling terrain..and got 11.8 kWh/100 km (5.25 m/kWh). A friend of mine here has a 2017 Ioniq regularly get between 8 and 9 /100 km (7 to 8 miles/kWh) and he doesn’t drive like a vicar’’s wife either. It seems that Hyundai/Kia and Tesla are still ahead on efficiency....but I would have loved the charging speed of the MG4 last winter when we did a 2,200 km round trip to Frankfurt...not something we would normally do but grandkids get born at odd times and you have no control of where your kids end up living and working..😊

Good look and drive - thanks. Also note rear wheel drive, most EVs this size are front wheel drive. Bonnet seems short but this is proof of a ground up EV design. Good safety ratings. Battery cooling is by variable air intake from sharp-look front vents. Juries out on how effective this system is. Entry and start very slick - its on when you get in - no start button. All this shows an advance on previous MG models and their intention of growing EV market share. Now all we need is a national grid which doesn't go dark for 3 hours a day ...

Enjoyed the review, thanks. I'm surprised you made such a big deal about the interior, I thought it was a step up from the ZS. But I did test drive the Trophy which has the vegan leather seats, perhaps that makes all the difference.
I've ordered the Trophy as I thought it was worth the money for the extras I valued - heated seats, heated steering wheel, 360 birdseye cameras, electrically adjustable driver's seat and those nicer seats. There are even more differences in the spec, but those are the ones that were important for me. Even with the top spec and a metallic paint, it's £4,940 cheaper than the base spec ID.3 and that has none of the creature comforts I want. I think MG are on to a winner with this car.

Test drove the SR LR and found it a pleasant drive. Agree with all reviews that say road noise a bit intrusive, lack of rear wipe wasn't helpful on showery day and not keen of the shiny piano black parts of interior. Back stepped out once as we came off a roundabout and nearside rear caught a small pot hole, otherwise did not notice it was rear drive. All else was pretty OK. Zip from 35 to 70 was pretty good and car felt good to drive. My wife felt there was too much feedback from road, opposite of the eC4 which was very wallowy. Regen was good in this car with little need to brake, but we had no time to adjust settings though. Overall it was OK test. wife wants to try e2008 again as felt that was quieter but hopefully we will go for the MG4 Trophy as I think the rear view aids essential.

The leather seats in our old Volvo and the Pleather seats in our MG5 LR do get flipping hot in the summer although, to be fair, The perforated pleather on the MG5 cools quite quickly. Cloth finish would not put me off. I don't know why more manufacturers don't go for light coloured roof lining. As for Lane Keep Assist, I have it off permanently but, but, but, it should really only be used on Motorways and reasonably straight dual carriageways. At any time, I believe that it encourages a lack of awareness.

Can’t justify the extra expense of the Tesla. I’ll miss the insane acceleration but this is no slouch. Ordered the Trophy as buying through the company makes it such a tax efficient deal anyway, and the differences between this and the Tesla for the price are minimal if not superior in favour of the MG IMO. Take one for a spin before considering spending the extra money on something else.

The ride height is a low hatchback and door cill's are high and wide, making entry and exit a bit of a strain if you have any mobility issues.
However the ZS EV has much higher ride height and this is a big advantage for some folks.
The black interior of the MG4 gives a claustrophobic feeling, which is shame as the interior space is good given the size of the car, it needs a lighter interior or a pan roof to give more of a feeling of space.

I am slim and find the seat less padded and supportive as the previous version, so I have no support and slide from side to side whilst driving, really causing me back and shoulder pain. The headrest juts forward so I can't sit comfortably. Compared to my 2019 version it isn't comfortable. I could cry with disappointment. Good technology though, however, it is really glitchy. Radio just turns itself off. It keeps welcoming me to 1st Jan 2019. I have a squeal on my wheel when reversing hard right. I have a service required every 500 miles, and the service department just reset it, putting my service further and further back. Seat belt isn't adjustable, cuts into my neck and rubs my nipple. Steering wheel doesn't come in and out, slight adjustment up and down. There is more that I don't like. Not impressed...

LFP is rapidly becoming the ‘go to’ chemistry for EV batteries, cheaper, safer and will outlive the car they are in...but to all intents and purposes it doesn’t matter that much. Our early 2019 Kia e-Niro is NMC and yes, we do use an 80% charging regime, not so much to protect the battery but because that’s all we need. We live in rural France, so everything is a drive, the nearest town, Niort is 55 km, Poitiers and Angouleme 60..but even so a typical week of driving is only 200-250 km, well within the 80% charge on the car, even in winter. We do charge to 100% about once a month but at home, only use rapids on long trips...no detectable range loss after 70,000 km and we’ve done 2 trips back to the UK, 1 to Germany, 1 to Switzerland...and France is a big place. LFP is the way to go but I expect this now ‘old’ Kia’s battery to last a lot longer than any ICE unit.

I will keep it at a 100% all the time and won't hopefully get the degradation I have had on the leaf. Plus the range is about right and I save money. A Kia e Nero would be out of my price bracket. Looks good - but the fly in ointment (and it's a BIG ONE) is this:- If our lives and critical infrastructure in the west increasingly come to rely on and be dependent on Chinese technological wonders such as this then we will possibly (no, likely!) to be in the same beholden position that Germany and other countries found to their cost re with Russia and energy st some point in near future. China is playing the long game with it's ambition for world hegemony ---and it's winning. Low priced temptations such as this help it achieve it's ultimate goal - even in a small and seemingly innocuous way. I don't blame anyone who choses it - the pricepoint is remarkable, but we need protective response from our governments on such goods. More practical and better interior. It’s where all my time is spent. The MG5 facelift remember.

@@ElectricVehicleMan for me the facelift is too similar to the current one and looks dated still. Also inside the MG4 has more room due to the longer wheel base, and if you spend a lot of time in a car you also want it to have confortable legroom and drive nicely. Boot is smaller on the MG4 but inside where you sit is slightly more room. Also I believe yhe MG5 charges faster.... of and cheaper.

If you have solar panels and you plan to use the VTL a lot then the £2,500 for the long range is a bargain . Your getting 13kwh of solar storage for £2,500 !. Not forgetting of course the 7 year MG warranty . The competition is in trouble.
