Love this version. Emmy is completely haunting and I love the way she looks at Steve at the beginning of the track and mentally forces him to join her in harmony. Just magical. Willies is a legend. He is great in this version with Emmy and as usual Emmy adds such richness to his voice. Just a wonderful track.
Willie is a much better guitarist than he is usually given credit for. Technically sound in all keys, knows the fretboard like it was the back of his hand, and has a totally unique style with unmatched voicing. Willie also knows what notes not to play. No exhibitionism at the expense of the music. When he departs America should declare a national day of mourning.
Townes was so influential...such a shame he lived a tortured life and never fully realized the fruits of his labor. RIP to one of the greatest American songwriters ever.
I met Townes in Dudley England 1994 just a few years before he passed on bless his soul. Spent over n hour talking to him backstage before his show. One of the nicest most modest men I've ever met. No Star thing about him at all, and gave a wonderful two hour show where you could hear a pin drop throughout, a musician's musician
I would have paid all the fucking money in the world to be a fly on that wall. I grew up in the 80's and 90's, and moved to Houston in '00 from the swamps of Louisiana. I was introduced to his music there by a couple of other musicians. They introduced me to Earle's music first, and then to Townes', and a plethora of others. However, it was Townes' music that blew my mind and spoke to my soul, in a way that music just never had up until that point. He was such a tragic and enigmatic character, kind of out of place and out of time. He seemed to come from outer space, but from a planet similar to Texas, but a little different and a little better somehow. Wish I could have seen him play. Speaking of that, I need to get my shit together and catch a Prine performance before it's too late. I keep missing him.
I love how Emmy Lou Harris has such talent and skill that she can hold her own with Willie Nelson. She is an icon as well, just as he is in his own way. Never get tired of hearing her sing. A consummate professional.
Gram Parsons sure loved her,and She him.....wish he could have stayed longer Lord......I don't understand,but I do....R.I.P.Gram Parsons....Townes Vansandt.....and any others I've forgotten
Her voice is achingly beautiful and melancholy. Been listening to her for 42 years. Since seeing her at Great Hudson River Revival-The Clearwater Festival.
Well Tex I'm not from your state but have to agree, you boys have produced some of the greatest American songwriters and Townes is at the top of the list. He touches anyone with a soul
High praise. Townes is a cult figure in Texas for sure. I'm wearing a shirt that says " Listen to Townes Van Zandt " right now and I've had people pick up my tab in restaurants just because I was wearing it. I'm particularly partial to the genius that Townes is. Steve Earle is a cousin of mine so I got put onto Townes at a young age and got to meet him when I was 7 years old . All downhill from there haha .
I second the point no High schooler should graduate without knowing the name Townes Vn Zandt ... I have experienced to my Granddaughters at a young age about Townes..now in mid to early 20d they a different level taste in Music than most their age They always amaze me with a new song from a new writer...knowing I'll be blown away so What a great post Thank you for sharing this Beautiful Music !ol man way down in TX JD..Goodness Grace Happiness and good Health to all people ....Peace
Kelly cortesi jones She is just one of the prettiest women ever, period. I'd pick that beautiful gray haired angel over a younger woman with any other color hair any and every day of the week. She is otherworldly. And just to make my point even stronger, I'm only 39 years old. :)
My cat is named for Townes Van Zant, I love his music so much, he was a lyrical genius, I got too see Emmylou with Rodney Crowell in 2015, who is sitting to the right of Emmylou on the stage of ACL, heard her warm up of Pancho & Lefty and Wheels {GP), her performance with Rodney was outstanding. We got the last two tickets to a Rodney Crowell concert in a beautiful venue, in the small PNW town we live in & saw Rodney November 19th, 2019, and he played Pancho & Lefty for his encore. Little did we know that would be our last live concert, throughout the pandemic. Really looking forward to our next concert, whenever that might be.
Ah, how things come full circle. I 'discovered' Townes courtesy of Emmylou's rendition of Pancho on Luxury Liner; I first heard about Emmylou from my friend in the summer of 1970 - he was going to Georgetown and raved about about Roy Buchanan and this young, beautiful singer (Emmylou) who apparently was singing (and waitressing) at some club he hung out; heard and saw Emmylou for the first time backing Gram Parsons as part of GP and the Fallen Angels (I think this was in 1972) - 10 seconds into their first song (I recall as We'll Sweep Out the Ashes In the Morning) it seemed to me that she was in love with Gram - she had that look - but by the time GP came out, I was convinced she was the best backup singer/harmony vocalist I'd ever heard (which I still believe to this day), so after Gram's death and her emergence as a solo artist, I've been a huge fan and by 1975 have been convinced she has been the BEST female singer in music - the purest voice I've ever heard, whether in rock or country. I consider Pancho and Lefty one of the 10 greatest songs ever written....
+IHeartAtx yes during an interview the listed their biggest infulance was T V Z ,Gram parsons,Emmylou Steve Earl....their knowledge was breathtaking for ones so young.....
+IHeartAtx first time i heard them was on letterman... they covered simon and and garfunkel's "america" ... i was blown away ... hope you checked them out
First Aid Kit is a female duet from some Scandinavian country. Can’t recall which one. But their specialty is covering classic popular music from America. They are really good. And they are really popular!
Beautiful and gives a bitter sweet feeling...trying to think of the word...longing silence expressed in a melody of soft words and tender sounds of the guitar....melocholy
Saw Townes Van Zandt sing this at Break for the Border in London not many weeks before he passed. He was shot through with illness and had a voice like sandpaper in the desert. It was gobsmackingly billiant.
I love his music and writings, but omg he was a most handsome man before the alcohol and drugs make him look older than he was. RIP dearest Townes, you music will last forever.....
For me, it was Townes's eyes. Set above those cheekbones, his eyes were deep-set, and penetrating. They could look hard or kind, but they mostly looked like they were searching for something ... in the surroundings, in the person with whom he was talking ... maybe in life.
Being from Houston, Ft. Worth & Austin, I have been so much more than fortunate. Seeing Townes (& many others) was simply an everyday occurrence downtown Houston...SO many greats! Lightnin Hopkins, Johnny Winters, on & on! Just so grateful for the education! Townes...couldn't find a kinder soul...Thanks to you Townes and SO many others! 13th Floor Elevators Billy Gibbons and his band...well before ZZ Top! Just....Thank You all...
Hey Debby-In '72 I went to Houston from New Orleans after love, she moved there, how could she not see-well, long time ago, both still here in different places doing ok, but, my point is you mention Billy Gibbons before ZZ Top, well Billy had ZZ Top but their 1st album was the only one out at this time, still short hair horned rim glasses, anyway, I heard him and Freddie King on that visit in not so "safe" area I was told (I felt fine there), in a converted old movie theater club with round tables throughout and it is tied for the best club gig I've ever seen and don't remember the name of the place and wondered if you might have heard of it or been there

I know a few boys from Ft Worth who meet up at Billy Bob’s every year on Townes Van Zandt’s birthday and load up a few cold ones and make the 17 mile drive to the Dido Cemetery in Pecan Gap where Townes is buried. Real fans of Townes and beer!

Townes told a lot of stories about different songs, and they sometimes conflict. I would take that story about it coming in a dream with a grain of salt.
There are only two kinds of men, those who love Emmylou, and those who haven't met her yet-----Willie Nelson
Mr Willie true
Sounds 'bout right.

No doubt a very talented woman
She's so beautiful that it's honestly kind of stupid...

I always say this (much less eloquently, mind you) and get sideways looks. Willie is a fantastic guitar player.

Sad that me and Townes crossed paths for sure and I never saw him live . Amazing guy . We wont see his likes again ..I miss him .
I saw him several times in Austin, TX. He was a remarkable talent.
