How many times did I listen to that song, and watched this video...100 times? .... 200 times ?... don’t know, maybe more ... always with a litlle bit of pain...for what?....don’t know....
The emotion in this song is just gut wrenching. Steve is brilliant and Emmy lifts the song to celestial levels with her harmony. Together they are just heart-breaking. The harmonica and Violin add such a haunting feel. A fantastic arrangement. Such a pleasure to have such simple yet, fantastic music.
Emmylou Harris steps back from singing the "just too high" line. She has seen so many talented people waste their lives and they are not her words. She is one class act.
Steve Earle has been my hero and inspiration for many years. As a recovering addict myself, I've always found great happiness in his gits, and grateful to God he lived to continue to share them.
We got Steve headlining Saturday night at hardly strictly bluegrass festival in Golden gate Park, and he was perfect. What a pro. He evokes so many emotions and can lay his heart bare in front of thousands. He's brave, honest, harsh at times, and he knows how life can deal some harsh blows. He's a good human being
one of the songs that brings my to tears...what blessing this earth has had....with the likes of steve earle (who like most of us learned the hard way) and Miss Emmy lou harris...I will always be hopelessly in love with her counrty girl beauty and her spirit catcher of a voice...
...a wonderful song...!!!! this song played (Emmylou Harris sings that song solo) on my mother's funeral, she died last year at the beginning of March. the tears also now run me across the face. REST IN PEACE MAMA...i love you.
For those who can say they feel an emotion, listening to a work of Art. "BRAVO ". I for one lived this saga during my early marriage to a loving and caring women. Taken hostage by addiction. Dead on. Warm breeze. Yes, freedom
The month my ex wife left me without saying goodbye my friend asked me to see this guy sing.... I didn't know who he was at the time but thought it be good to get out. He played in front of maybe 200 people and played this song. It forever became one of my favorites and I actually have it bookmarked as a fav. Its been 6 years now and I've never told this to anyone before writing this piece....
Your comments stand out in the best way possible It's heartening to know you're enjoying my work Your words have made my day brighter Connecting with fans like you is a wonderful experience
I was lucky to see Steve Earle many years ago at Jericho beach during the folk music festival. He sang this song when the sun was setting and life at that moment was perfect.
aïe , j'adore Emmylou Harris "goodbye " ......est une belle chanson , j'ai gardé dans un coin tout près les paroles en français ....je savais que l'histoire était belle ....superbe !
Absolutey the most heartfelt song ive ever heard,in my life, theres none ive heard any better.all of these are perfect, every one pulling heartstrings,so perfect ,thank you

The first time I heard this song was on the TV show Friday Night Lights. The scene was when there was two brother and one of the brothers was going to jail for the other one because I believe the guilty one's wife was pregnant. This song played as they said Goodbye. It blew me away. This version to me is the best. The looks on the faces of the group says it all.
Holy Smokes !!! I worked on the audio crew for this show !!! This was an excellent production !!! One of my many favorites !!! Thanks you so much for posting this !!! Cheers !!
I just had to learn this song, seeing this perfect video. I guess I'm a biased observer, but is it just me, or do women get more beautiful as they age? Richer, deeper, stronger - yet more delicate makes you want to treasure them extra special... Sharon Shannon's quiet, composed face in this video... and Emmy Lou
I believe Steve Earle went to Galway to retreat after getting clean. There he met and played with Sharon Shannon. Galway became very close to his heart. Emylou Harris has sang with Mary Black, the Chieftains, and Dolores Keane. So it's good to see music crossing physical and genre boundaries. I have not forgot Donal Lunny. Yes he plays the bouzki everywhere. We must not forget supreme uillean piper Liam O'Flynn passed away this year. He and Donal played together in Plantxy for many years.
It was a few years after he got clean, but he went for vacation on a break between tours a couple times in the late 90s, and met the folks you mention.
I have to confess the 'Old Alligators' have got loose in my eyes... This year's Mother's Day was the second one since she joined my Dad. Your my girl! Remember that will forever be true. So very wise... Talk about how I have to analyze or profile everybody I meet! She sit visiting on the edge...people will show you unconsciously the Real Deal...of what they're up to!
Thank you.. Oh I am enjoying the soft sounds of their voices and the music as it sets my mood to calm and relaxed.. These two are Legend.. always a pleasure Xo
I saw Emmy Lou in concert in 1974. I have loved her ever since. She was super hot in her 20s. But aside from closing my eyes and listening to her incredible voice, I admire her modesty, her selfishness, her compassion, and how she has grown older so graciously.
Donal Lunny?(Bouzouki) You show up in the strangest of places. Beautiful song. I'm a huge fan of Steve Earle and after all these years I'm still madly in love with Emmylou Harris.
+Owl Morris yep I hear you Bro and it's been 25 yrs since I had me some whiskey and tequilas I was in Mexico once from San Diego Still don't know how I got home.... Greetings from IRELAND 😉 salamat for this
Lots of clips of them doing this song on you tube. This one is for me the best quality sound and picture and the harmonising between Earle and Emily is perfect. Also the violins add to the lyricism.
Discovered this late last night and had to pass it on! It is indeed a gem and Thank you for posting! Two favorites for many years-this is one of the most beautiful duets ever.
I am really touched by this song. With you and ELH I've always loved Emmylou Steve your a Great singer and guitar player y'all voice it's so beautiful Love y'all.
Me Too, Tom..I'm weeping thinking of My long night's all alone as a young wife and Mom of 4 now Adult children, and how they now don't communicate with Me, since the divorce from their father..."Most November's I break down and cry..cause I can't remember if We said Goodbye." :'(
I was 12 when my mom died on November 2, 1961. I know I never said goodbye, but I believe I will see her again. I don't know your situation C, but if it is in your heart write the kids a letter telling them how you feel. Leave nothing unsaid If you get nothing back you can say "I tried" Don't say goodbye yet!
How many times did I listen to that song, and watched this video...100 times? .... 200 times ?... don’t know, maybe more ... always with a litlle bit of pain...for what?....don’t know....
I understand. Something in me lives because of this song….
And something in me dies because of this song.
…It is _that_ powerful.
Absolutely. Well put.
Probably the best version of one of the greatest songs ever written. Sublime
Yup. Sublime. Perfect.
GROSSARTIG 👏😊
I wrote the storyline, thanks for the sentiment: it’s something else for Earle than what I projected
Agree
Pure emotion
Emmylou Harris steps back from singing the "just too high" line. She has seen so many talented people waste their lives and they are not her words. She is one class act.
Seriously music doesn't get much better than this. Two of my favorites and give it up for the band, extremely talented.
agree Bobbie. Right on

Damm, that is a beautiful song ! And speaking of beautiful, Emmylou just gets more gorgeous with the passing years !!
Love this song. Emmylou really adds depth to the singing. A unique
blend of musicians.
I've listened and watched this version many times over the years since I saw it live on TV.
It remains stunning and always will.

I'm familiar with the music of Donal, Steve and Sharon! First time i've heard this! I wept with the beauty and the pain of it! Bitter magic!
Love Emmylou and Steve great performance of the whole band
The people who thumb down this need to go look for their souls because they seem to have been lost.
+TXLorenzo Don't worry, Lozenzo, and don't loose time trying to save their souls. They don't exist.
+TXLorenzo Indeed... forever lost
There attention seekers. I gnore them.
These few commenters have gone a bit raw at the expense of a blistering I didn’t really have invested in this storyline
Recovering from addiction is not the most exalted of the many reasons to express success

Absolutely, great music, great song about the pain of love lost. Haunting & poignant!
Love this tune. This rendition is fire!
Emmy’s voice lends this delicate maudlin sorrow to Earle’s badass nonchalance. It’s quite moving.
Holy Smokes !!! I worked on the audio crew for this show !!! This was an excellent production !!! One of my many favorites !!! Thanks you so much for posting this !!! Cheers !!
and mighty audio it is!! share it out there! we need this kinda song in our lives at the moment
Imagine the talent it takes to play the harmonica while playing the guitar at the same time! And Emmylou, you are the finest!
You should watch Howard Levy play the harmonica and piano together. They call him the man with two brains’.
Awesome ! Just beautiful !!!
I can't remember if we said goodbye 💞
He's so handsome here and love him in red 💞
One of my all time favorites. Emmylou is a beautiful treasure.
Emmylou. Such soul.

These performers are so good they transcend genre. And physical boundaries, for that matter!
Thank you. I did not know Liam O'Flynn was no longer with us.
Doesn’t get much better than this!!!!💚💚💚
The lyrics of this song is so visual....such a beautiful, haunting, heartbreaking piece of music.

Make sure remember that special lady that you haven't seen in a long time
