Defying Gravity is a legendary song in the musical theater space. It’s the song that sells the tickets for this show. I don’t think there was a better casting choice for Elphaba than Cynthia. When I heard that final run for the first time, I screamed out loud. It’s so different from Idina Menzel’s original performance, and that’s exactly what it needed to be. The stage musical just had its 20th anniversary last year, so it’s the perfect time for a new interpretation of an amazing show. I know I’m going to weep when Cynthia and Arianna perform “For Good”.
A better casting choice would have been someone age appropriate. 🤔
@@GalaxyNexus1 Idina and Kristin were 32 and 35 respectively when Wicked premiered in 2003. Cynthia and Ariana are 34 and 28. Adults have been playing teenagers in theater and film since forever.
You explain things so beautifully. I have zero musical knowledge or talent and yet everything you describe makes so much sense to me. I love your channel. It makes me appreciate singing/ music so much more.

I've been watching the trailer maybe every hour on the hour and when I tell you seeing your video pop up has made my day! The trailer reaction was fresh, I really enoyed!

I’ve been privileged to live in NYC, and I’ve seen Wicked at least 50x (hooray for ticket lotto!) I’m excited for the movie even tho I’m not a huge fan of Ariana. I did get to see Idina Mendel as Elphaba and most of the original Broadway cast, Ariana has got a big cape to fill.
I don't follow Ari but can't deny her vocal chops. She's also done theater early in her career. I think she got this. And you're so lucky to have seen it with the original cast! I have yet to see it but wished I saw it with the original cast.
We'll see about her acting, but i will say there were some leaks a while ago and she's definitely got the chops
Cynthia plays Alphaba. Ariana plays Glenda.
don't worry, ariana started on broadway when she was 15 ! and she's always kept her toes in musical theatre, plus kristin chenoweth said ariana is doing amazing.

Cynthia and Ariana are two very talented artists. I am hoping the movie is a success. I'm also hoping there's a soundtrack. Movie soundtracks used to be so good. I think with "The Greatest Showman" there was some improvement. I know of someone who listens to that soundtrack on a regular basis. Me personally around the 1st of June I listen to Kirk Franklin and the Family's Christmas album.
There will be soundtrack will be released earlier than the movie like with the little mermaid live action
Ariana's record label will release it.

Cynthia can blow every note of this show out of the water. The run at the end of defying gravity should sound powerful and effortless.....not like it's a struggle and being drug through her throat. It has to be have been her choice to sing it this way. It kills me to listen to it...particularly since it's the climactic moment of the entire show....it kills me. I wince. It has to have been her choice though bc she would most certainly demand they not release it this way if she didn't like it. I wasn't worried and now I am.

I love Erivo end, mainly as I’m not a fan of the screech. But I do thinks it’s about time that Elphabas did more vocally healthy ending then there wouldn’t be as many Elphaba vocal injuries. One thing you know from Erivo is she keeps her voice well supported.

I saw rhe original cast in the original Broadway production and loved it, but obviously dont remember many details. This trailer, however, does not look good to me and Im not certain that it will be a huge hit. Yes the Wicked fanatics who have wasted, uh spent, their money to see this single show 50+ times will turn out, but not convinced theres enough there to reach beyond them. And sure Ariana stans will come out too.

i didn't like what she did with the last run of defying gravity. note: that's not a slap against erivo as a performer. i just didn't like that part of what i've heard. anywho, i'm trippin' that there's supposed to be a part 2 planned for 2025, because they felt like continuing the movie after defying gravity would be anti-climactic for the movie version.
Just not into Cynthia like that. Not the biggest fan. Good singer. But after he comments on American women. And Hollywood thinking it was okay to cast her as Harriet Tubman-an American slave turned hero-when she is a British woman was crazy to me and i thought it was distaste full for her to take it. So I’m gonna go see wicked but idk how much I’ll enjoy it
Loved wicked but just wish they hadn’t shoved the standard, done to death, heterosexual romance/girls fighting over boy, crap that we’ve seen 10 trillion times already. Glinda and Elphaba had all the makings for a wonderful couple and romance, it would have fit so well, but no…it has to be hetero yet again
