    I had that issue also, ever since I’ve always kept another set of filters in my truck at all times and fuses. Glad to see I was not the only one going through this issue with fass

      You bet, I do the same. It caught me off guard the first time it happened to me when I was on a trip and had somewhere to be. I’m going to buy some zerostart silicone wrap filter heaters for next winter. I’ll put them on timers to heat my fuel filter and water separator canisters each morning it is below 15 degrees F.

    Get 2 of the heater probes and wire them in. Those can double up on the same power plug but need to be separate from the disk heater. The Ign feed to switch is fine to use
    Hook up the coolant lines and have a valve in there to close it off during warm weather
    I also hooked up a temp sensor in it and run it to the a CTS3. You can see exactly what the temp is.
    Hook up a dual power inlet to run the block heater and a battery tender, keep them topped off.

      I had considered adding the heater probe setup until I read a post in the forums where a guy with that setup was having this same issue at startup. If you’re having success with that setup it’s good to know and I appreciate you posting. At this time, I’m planning to utilize zero start filter wrap heaters to heat the fuel filter and water separator canisters. This should have the safe effect.

      @@AK_5.9 Realistically one needs the 2 heater probes AND the filter disk. The coolant ports will take some of the load off the heaters and help them last longer.

    1. treat your diesel. 2. wind chill doesnt have any effect on vehicle temperature

    • @AK_5.9
      @AK_5.9  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      1. The fuel was treated. 2. It won’t effect the absolute temperature of the vehicle, but it will effect the rate at which heat is extracted from the vehicle. This could be significant if the vehicle is moved from a heated environment to be parked outside and not running for an interval. In the presence of wind the vehicle, and its fuel, will be brought down to the environmental temperature faster than it would in the absence of wind. That being said, I never stated the wind chill would effect the absolute temperature of the vehicle or it’s fuel. I only stated what the wind chill was during the production of the video for dramatic effect, and because it is what I was feeling while producing. My videos are highly immersive.

    Fast told me that the disk heater is 300 W watts and I purchased the HK 1001 probe heater with a splitter to add an additional probe. These are rated at 100 W each and I plan on running them to my 2020 ram auxiliary switch with the key on constant feature I live in south Texas and seldom get negative temperatures. I do plan on carrying my Dewalt heat gun as a back up when traveling to northern states this was a very informative video and if you can add tags like #FASS it will get more hits and more people will become aware of issues. Thank you.

    I do not have the FASS heater on yet. I've used WVO heater wraps that I plug into 110V drop cords when it gets really cold. I have one on the water separator and one on the filter. Temps have been down to -20 in IA and the truck sat outside. I had no issue with starting. I only plug them in overnight. I was hoping the FASS heater would negate those but from your video it doesn't seem like it. In your case, you might only need to do the water separator. As for on the road, I'm probably going to carry a battery back up and plug in the WVO for a time frame to thaw the water separator. Diesel additive is a must below about 17F from what I've read.

    • @AK_5.9
      @AK_5.9  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it seems the FASS heater function is dependent on the ability of the fuel to circulate through the heater element and keep moving, which it can’t do it the filter pores are clogged up by paraffin crystals and it’s popping fuses. It doesn’t hurt to have it while rolling down the road in sub zero, but it doesn’t help with that initial startup. At least not for me. I’m glad to hear you have success with the filter wraps as that’s exactly what I was planning to use as a solution going forward. Thanks for posting!

    I made an adapter so I could use my factory fuel supply line and both Ram filters with water separator filter by engine .
    If I have any trouble with the water separator filter on the FASS pump I will just swap on a larger micron filter instead of the stock 2 micron water separator filter.
    I just took a steel nipple off of a Chevy module , then soldered on a 1/2 hose barb to mate up with the blue line out of the pump .
    So my stock system is all there total of 4 filters, plenty of fuel from the 100 gph fass and easy to go back stock if I want

    @deane2974 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I run a FASS 95 and a S&B 62 gallon tank on my Duramax. My FASS has the heater probe, not the spin on attachment. Personally I would not run the heater by itself purely due to any air that could be by the pump and cause the heater to burn out. I used Howes treatment (on the heavy side of the ratio) and leave my truck plugged in overnight. Took the truck to work last week when the temp was -20F and had no issues. Once the truck starts I will let it sit idling for 10 to 15 minutes to get the fuel circulated a bit before taking off. I wonder if the plug heater that goes into the FASS block might do a better job of heating the lift pump and filters than the one you have?

      Thank you for posting your setup, it’s always helpful to know about a setup that works and is reliable. That other heater type might have made a difference, but when I called Fass after having this issue, they specifically recommended this disk heater over the other types of heaters they offer. I was running power services winter additive when I had this issue. Now I’m running hot shots secret winter additive. Howe’s also looks good. Both Howes and hot shots address the paraffin crystal issue in writing on their additive bottles. I’ve seen others post that hot shots also works well in sub zero temps. I have also since switched from fass filter and water separator to Cat filter and water separator and have also installed a zero start filter wrap heater. I think the fass water separator might be problematic due to its swelling membrane design. The last one I had started failing me and starving my engine of fuel after only about 2 or 3 thousand miles.

    Do you drive your Cummins all winter long? How long does it take for the cab heat to warm up, do you use a winter front? What do you use to keep your truck from rusting, looks like it is in really great shape!. I live in Minnesota and winter really suck here. Also if you do drive in winter how well does it handle? Thanks

    • @AK_5.9
      @AK_5.9  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do drive it all winter long. Fortunately, it usually only gets near zero or sub zero a few times a year where I live so I do not use a winter front. It probably takes 10 to 15 min of normal driving for the cab heat to start to get warm, and that’s with running my block heater for 5 hours before running the truck. Every time there is a road salting, as soon as it warms up, I get out my power washer and spend a lot of time underneath getting rid of the salt. I’m also planning to do a Cosmoline RP-342 undercoating, as soon as I get some time, to prevent rusting. I’ll do a video on that when I get to it. It handles fine in the winter. You guys running the diesels up north, where the winters are real, definitely have my respect! Thanks for watching!

      The battery would be the most common problem in cold weather. If you’re certain that is not the issue, and the starter is turning over adequately but the engine won’t start, it could be a problem with the fueling. One easy thing to try is adding heet in case there is frozen water in your fuel lines.

    Spray foam your diesel tank and get trailer house water linsolation and cover your fuel lines with it and fuel heater might be burnt out is my guess. By insolating everything it should stay warmer.and as soon as it abouve outside temp wind shield will effect it so the spray foam and fuel line insolation should make it need alot less heat so the heater will work better. I just installed it a week ago and have not had a chance to use it yet because the truck is getting a new transmission and tuning at Firepunk Diesel right now. I will give an update when I get some experience with it. At the time of this video, I was using power services winter additive. Now I’m using hot shots secret EDT+winter defense. I used it in -10 a few weeks ago with no issue. The truck had been garaged over night, but sat outside turned off in the windy sub zero all day and subsequently started and ran with no issue. Hots shots and Howes both, anecdotally, seem better at dealing with the paraffin crystal issue. I’ve become a big believer in hot shots products over the last year. That might have been all it needed to solve this issue. I’m moving to a much colder climate in a few weeks. I’ll probably make an update video on what cold weather setup works for me after a time.

    Hair dryers are 1875 watts, (vs 100 to 300W FASS heaters, admittedly working on convection, not conduction but you proved exactly why i called BS every time FASS pushes seeking hundreds of dollars of Heaters. 100Wx2 or 300W n1 place IS NOT ENOUGH. Not even close. If it does warm one filter at the inlet to the FASS SO WHAT?. the rest of your lines from tank and to engine and forward are still frozen and 300 W from 15 feett away ain't enough to thaw 1 degree in under 15F deg climate from 10 ft away. Therefore I calculated and decided that the FASS heaters are a very expensive waste of time and money. Btw, your battery won't be great for starting the truck after 5 to 60 minutes of putting out > 20 Amps. Most will be totally dead. It's a DUMB sadness truck. Love my FASS pump but the heaters are a cruel lie and joke. They CANNOT work, logically if you think the whole system through. Your won't start truck will have a slightly warmer inlet port and a dead battery, that's about it.
    Absolutely unfailingly use a good to great winter anti-gel attitude I have no affiliation but I've looked at test physically and lab reports and such and hotshot secret absolutely works in personal experience I don't know how else to solve it internally keep the fuel from freezing and gelling up and they just seem to have the best chemical formula for doing it if somebody has a similar or better one I just don't know about it but I guarantee their stuff works.

      All true, yes. Applying enough heat to the canisters to warm them has worked on both occasions for me, so I think the filter wrap option will work and will be less cumbersome than other methods of warming them (hairdryer). I am also planning to try a double dose of hot shots secret EDT winter defense additive. They specifically address the paraffin crystal issue in writing on the bottle. I'll try that, see if it alone will work, and give an update in time.

    I have the 165gph pump and the same thing happened last year in Colorado. I am installing the disk heater this week but I wish I saw this video sooner. I also picked up the XL filters, not sure if that will be worse because of the larger volume of fuel that needs to be heated?.. I saw a video where a guy froze different anti gels, the Power Service 911 did the worst, best one was Hot Shots so I'm going to be running that this winter.. How often do you change your filters and did you delete the stock filter?

    • @AK_5.9
      @AK_5.9  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think it’s probably still good to have the disk heater as it will work on clouded fuel in the tank as it moves through. It just doesn’t work at that initial startup when the fuel downstream of the heater is clouded. I plan to use zero start filter wraps to heat the canisters this winter. You can get them in 12v and 120v depending on how you want to set it up. Thank you for the info on the hot shots fuel additive and for posting your experience here. The additive might work if it can alter the crystallization properties of the paraffin, but heat will definitely work. I change my filters every 15,000 miles or every year, whichever comes first. I believe the XLs have 30,000 mile change intervals. I deleted my factory fuel filter when I was installing my dual CP3 kit as it made the fuel return hookup easier and cleaned things up under the hood. I used a Fleece delete which you can see in my dual CP3 video if you’re interested in that type of thing. Thanks for watching!

      I too am in Colorado, deep behind enemy lines here in Denver. I switched to Hot Shot’s Secret for both summer and winter use and I am pretty happy with this over some other additives. But if we get really cold, like going into negatives you have to double up the mix ratio for that extra protection. HSS has rated their additives for good down to something like minus 30(?), but they were testing using coarser filters like what Fass recommends for their pumps. With everyone choosing to run much finer filters that has changed how paraffin and clogging filters at cold temps. When I was talking to HSS’s last winter they told me that they were planning on testing their winter additive with finer filters to try and resolve this whole issue. I need to call them this week (maybe) and will ask them if they have done that testing yet.
