I've always hated how the people in charge of these companies never have any ambition beyond lining their pockets. That lack of passion for anything that isn't money always makes this world a little less worth living in.
I really hope Netflix will eventually realize the mistake of canceling Age Of Resistance or another streaming service will buy the rights to air the show. Lisa Henson had said that she understands how devastated many viewers are about the cancellation and are wondering what was going to happen next in the series. She also said the Jim Henson Company will try to find a way to continue the story in the future.

I tried googling to look for it but again, can't find it. But from what I read (or possibly watched) about 3 months ago, she talked about how she actually did not enjoy making Age of Resistance, she was glad she did, but doesn't look forward to doing another series, she'd rather work with the muppets or independent characters in other tv shows and features. So the interviewer asked, if she's not interested in finding another company like Hulu or Amazon to take on the next season, then will fans ever see what happens next. She said that her company has had success with its graphic novel series and if they proceeded to tell the events that follow season 1, then it would likely be in graphic novel format. So, no, she didn't confirm it, but I suspect 3 months later she probably still feels the same way. I'm peeved that I can't find the interview, maybe it was a youtube video, I don't know, but now I have no credibility on this lol.

Its such a huge shame it really is, i myself grew up with The Dark Crystal and i never once believed they would ever bring it back in the exact same style. So i was hugely over-joyed when i saw Age of Resistance it expands the lore and world of Thra. Lisa Henson should be really proud what she did in honoring her father's work is very rare today, you dont get many new shows which stay 100% true to their original works, and as a big Star Wars fan, this is exactly the type of "creative" we desperately need over at Lucasfilm right now. I really hope they are able to continue the show and another streaming service/distributor will pick it up. Unfortunately i have to say kids and young generations are fairly dumbed down today in the types of shows they consume, if a tv series or animated movie doesnt have fart jokes or anykind obvious direct of references to our modern society and culture (e.g. Minions), kids mostly loose interest. I dont want to put the blame on them for they dont know any better its just how this era is today, ofwhich they are simply growing up in. But i do blame the companies that just keep putting out really dumbed down cartoons.
I was going to but they picked up Cobra Kai at the same time they cancelled Dark Crystal, so... They earned themselves a lucky reprieve. But if they cancel that too I’m out.
I watch Age of Resistance several times on Netflix, I lost count of how many times I watched this show... Ridiculous they cancelled it. Blaming the fans for getting impatient, I mean wtf, I would sooner wait years for a sequel season as long as it happens. But you do make a point that if they decided after 30-60 days, honestly I didn't even hear about the show until well after that point, and after I started watching it I became hooked, I didn't see it advertised anywhere, I just saw it on Netflix. So you are right they failed at the marketing. As for them thinking that they can't sell people on puppets, that's stupid, from people I talked to this show was as popular as Game of Thrones, and it had the potential to be the next game of thrones. You have my support in wanting to bring Age of Resistance back, let's do it!! Make a petition man...they will make their moneys worth if they do a second season, I can guarantee it.
Different media, but the game Days Gone ended on a "big shit on the horizon" and the game did well enough, yet the developer blamed buyers many got it on discount rather than retail. In these people's eyes, it's ALWAYS the consumers fault.
like every other amazing netflix series... they cancel it bc they draw people in with a season or two, and then they think its not worth another season because they already have the fans subscription, and most fans wont cancel after they get rid of the show. Hopefully they find a platform that cares more about the fans rather than the subscription margins a new season brings in. its worse than hollywood.
Agreed. This is what I’ve always suspected: They want exponential profit growth, and that’s only possible through NEW SUBSCRIBERS. I think they’re looking for shows that will actively convert non-Netflix users INTO new subscribers.
But now that I think of it, by giving the green light to DCAR it’s clear they didn’t know wtf demographic they were aiming to attract. Anyone who already likes Henson stuff is probably also already a Netflix customer. If they really wanted new subscribers, they shouldn’t have teased us with one season of gold then dropping us. They should have just... added sports/news streaming or something.
I totally support the Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance ever since I first saw it. Even after I got tired of waiting I tried to make a fanfic of the series and drew some pictures for the story along with some of my new characters that I came up with myself. I thought I could help pass the time on waiting for the series by typing the fanfic until I heard the news about it being canceled.
Netflix kind of works like Nickelodeon, if a show on Nickelodeon isn't as popular as SpongeBob they cancel it, and I guess the same thing works with Netflix too. if a show on Netflix isn't as popular as stranger things they cancel it, so not fair 😭
This was really heartbreaking news for me. I really love and enjoy The Dark Crystal, I have been a big fan of the movie and I was really excited to find out they were making a new series on Netflix... After watching "Age of Resistance" I became an even bigger fan, the Jim Henson Company blew me away with the magic and wonder of Thra and bringing that to life in an even more epic way than before. Canceling this show saddens me, I really feel there's so much more they can do with the story and to expand on the little big screen content they have... Please give us more of The Dark Crystal.....
The thing is they didn’t promote it at all. Maybe I just missed absolutely everything but I literally only knew it was released because my sibling told me and knew I was waiting on it. I only knew a series was even being released because I kept looking it up. They didn’t market it at all tbh
So I think it's because of some of those things; 1 - The Pandemic. Working on the set with the virus around would be dangerous, with dangers of Covid on the Puppets and costumes directly. 2 - The Production and Netflix's impatience Netflix is an American company. They want products made fast and done well. But the truth is that the production of such a show took years. So of course, the more time and ressourceful a show is, the less likely it's going to get a new season. 3 - The Performance You gave good reasons, but I also blame the lack of curiosity and will from Geeks and the public. Pop Culture is now more popular than ever, and people tend to watch the things that they already watch. Dark Crystal is still, sadly, a niche Fandom. Stranger Things did work because people were getting nostalgic for a period most people knew (the 80's), and so they decided the milk the shit out of it. Also, blame Netflix's impatience. 4 - Marvelism To put it simply, AoR and the original movie are two different entities. With every different moods and different flow. The movie is much more spiritual, whereas the series is much more action/adventure driven, with jokes and quirky characters here and there. 5 - No Marketing The series was advertised as for the fans of the first movie. But considering how poor it's success was back then, the Fandom only truly formed very recently. Hell! People still had very mixed feelings about the movie in the 2000's. So yeah, maybe advertising it to people who play DnD and fantasy games would have been a much better idea. 6 - Not enough Gossip Netflix LOVES Gossip. If the show is getting talked about, they're sure they're getting millions. Hence why so many of them are centered around sex and violence, or Tokenism. Remember the whole shtick with The Witcher blackwashing certain characters and allowed the screen writers to put more apparent non-sense social commentary into the show (Like the guards having crotch-shaped helmets and the "enslaved race" being represented by black people)? They included that on purpose because they knew people where going to talk about it. People love drama and getting angry. Hell, shows like GoT still work to this day despite all the hatred each episode get, because people keep watching them! Same thing with the new Star Wars movies! People knew they were mediocre, but they kept watching and they made millions! Or even, the future LOTR series, or even The Little Mermaid! They sparked tons of debates, so expect them to make millions or have good viewership! Dark Crystal didn't spark anything. The marketing aimed at people who already knew the Dark Crystal (aka, not a whole lot), and it didn't had any element worthy of having it being talked about.
It's upsetting as someone who grew up watching the movie When I saw the teaser for the first time around 3-4 years ago (I think) I was excited to see what the Jim Henson company would make now that this classic was about to return to screens. I feel like Netflix's biggest mistake when releasing the show was not advertising it enough. The most I could find merch wise was the pop figures for the skeksis but even then it was hard for me to collect them all (thankfully I got all the characters before they stopped selling them) If they were expecting millions of people to stop by and watch the show, the most they could do it advertise it more, they shouldnt have to expect the fandom to do the advertising for them.
I watched the series 3 times the year it came out. I was HOOKED. I'd been waiting for this series to become a thing for 20+ years. I was DEVASTATED when the word finally got out that it was canceled (and it wasn't very long ago either. I'm talking less than 5 months ago I found out and was literally waiting all that time before for some kind of notice.)
Actually cuties wasn't a thing that was easily avoidable like many people don't realize Netflix just signs contracts just like us gamers with every game we play same problem too we never read them
I actually cried when I found out AoR was cancelled. I was angry at Netflix and I hate it, canceling a amazing show because of their own stupidity and then trying to blame the fans and show for it. I mean seriously 30 TO 60 DAYS??!! I found out about it the day after it came out and I think I first watched it the month after. I only found out about it because my brother told me about it after he stumbled upon an article about it or ssomething. THIS SHOW DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER, I wish I could thank to the Hensons and all the people who spent their time making this show.
Disney owns Jim Henson Productions...Why it ended up on Netflix is strange anyway. I say if netflix doesn't want it anymore, then Disney+ should take it over.

I just found your videos and feel so horrible that this world isn't getting a season two. I watched the series 3 times. Once by myself, and twice with my husband. The Dark Crystal was always my favorite movie along with The Last Unicorn and any of the Muppet movies. I loved the practical effects and just the world of Thra and I'm completely heartbroken that it had to end due to Netflix being stupid.
I still can't believe it tbh and didn't it win an award just before they cancelled? It had such great reception. And also watching the making of documentary the sheer passion and love put in by everyone, it makes me feel so sad for the puppeteers writers and actors and everyone. I can't believe my girl Deet is just gonna be left alone. I'm never forgiving Netflix they cancel so many great shows but Dark Crystal was so unique and just *sighs* I'm sad :(
I am still very upset that we may never get a season 2 but I am so happy that we did at the very least get what we did. A beautiful story with heaps of artisrty and creativity.

I strongly doubt the Hensons would trust Disney with more of their property. They've done the absolute minimum with The Muppets, considering how many people want more of them. Disney's hemorrhaging money right now anyway; they're going to focus on the moneymakers like Marvel.
If I recall correctly, shows on Netflix are not allowed to move to other streaming or cable networks for a certain number of years regardless if they were cancelled or not.

I'm 16 and I have older siblings they showed me the original movie the Dark Crystal and I was so thrilled about the age of resistance series. I admire the work that was put into this series and I'm so disappointed that Netflix has cancelled another show for no reason. Hopefully, they somehow continue this and make so many people happy. :) (people who are having a hard time during covid I hope that everything gets better soon

Besides the "Sesame Street" Muppets, which the Jim Henson Company sold to Sesame Workshop in the 2000s, the other Muppets, those being the ones from "Fraggle Rock" and the TV special "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas", are owned by the Jim Henson Company.
I can remember when first watching AOR at launch and thinking "this is expensive, you can see the money on the screen" and wondering if Netflix is just being that generous or if the show is being set up to underperform. I adore DC, but it's not Lord of the Rings in terms of popular fandom, it was never going to explode out of the gate. Turns out that Netflix was not the right home for Thra. I would argue that the best option to continue this universe is a feature film to connect the show with the original. With puppets, not animation. It needs to be done properly. Dark Crystal without puppets is not Dark Crystal, imho.
They did nothing to promote it. 1 trailer and some behind the scene footage. So what fid they expect? With a library this big do you realy think people will watch something unfsmiliair to them. Even if people dont watch trailers, you see and hear it around making it more likely for you to watch it. They complain about production cost but dont try anything to make up for it
This show was absolutely amazing! As a fan of the original, it was awesome to watch this series with my son. The story was vast and engaging. Loved it and very bummed out they wont continue.
This devastating. So much love and care and talent was put into this show, while half-assed garbage shows like Kenobi almost immediately get greenlit for a second season even though almost everyone hated it. I know that’s Disney and this is Netflix, but this strange pattern of bad shows continuing and good shows getting canned exists on every platform.
Netflix doesn't own The Dark Crystal, not even partially, The Henson Company does. If anything happens, another streaming services will take it and continue it. HBO streaming has done this several times, Netflix will drop a series and then HBO will pick it up. Hopefully this is the case for the Dark Crystal.
Netflix owns distribution rights to AoR, so unless TJHC can buy those rights back, Netflix can turn down a continuation without giving up the rights. TJHC can't shop it around otherwise. There will definitely be more Dark Crystal, but it won't be AoR in all likelihood. I'm hopeful for more if the fans can keep growing. I see us as being in a similar place to Star Wars fans after RotJ and before the prequel films. Keep watching, keep buying merch, keep supporting TJHC.
This film has been a huge part of my life since I was a kid, when I found out season 2 wasn’t happening I was actually so sad, hopefully they find a way to make it happen the first season was done brilliantly and I need more tbh
It's been over a year, and I still feel just as empty about this as when it was first announced, and--not to sound melodramatic--I'm starting to think I'll never get over it.
I know how you feel, I feel the same way with this and other things. Like how I may never play season 2 Game of Thrones from Tell Tale Games, and how I may never get to read part 2 of Fire and Blood.
In July 2020 they announced the Dragon Prince is save till season seven. I´m really happy about that. :3 I realy hope TDC AoR get another chance, maybe by netflix, maybe somewhere other, but please not disney..(just my opinion)
In general I think most series need at least two seasons to shine... Thats were a lot of people start watching anyways. Specially dark crystal since its such an unique concept and since they already made a huge investement in building all the scenary and the puppets. I mean to think that I started watching dark crystal like three months after its premiere and it was probably to late, eventhough I loved it

I saw The Dark Crystal in a movie theatre in 1982; the next day I went back & watched it again. That's the ONLY time I've EVER done that for a movie.Then I waited 37 years for Age of Resistance. I can wait however long for a next season -- I feel ancient & patient like an urRu!
From a marketing standpoint, it seemed like they were running on the fumes of Game of Thrones, with the official instagram page starting hashtag groups saying "which clan will you join?", despite the fact that barely anyone outside the limited readership of JM Lee's young adult novels had any clue what they were. They should have focused more on the actual puppetry, showing Planet Earth style clips of the creatures of Thra.

You’re right. Netflix was foolish to cancel that awesome show. When it comes to media, it’s not always about the CG characters. I see sources where people were repulsed by the Yoda puppet in Phantom Menace and changed it to CGI whereas the baby Yoda is a puppet character that is adored. The point is, Netflix rejected to show the viewers what will happen next. The other Skeksis and Mystics, the Garthim Wars, who Jen and Kira’s parents really are, that streaming network took all that away from us as if it were thrown in the trash and is forgotten forever. Netflix lost its Dark Crystal spirit, it was getting good, but that spark of the biggest part of the story has faded. Netflix betrayed Dark Crystal. I still need to see what will happen to Rian, Deet, and Brea, and the other Gelfling. When and if the franchise flourishes once more, I would recommend the franchise to a friend or relative.
The first time i watched Dark Crystal, i was 8 years old and i fell in love with that world. Then Age Of Resistence comes out when I'm 21! I was so looking forward to a season 2 and see the Garthim Wars and answer the rest of my questions that ive thought about since i was 8. Im disappointed in Netflix. I wish there was another venue for fantasy. One in which from production to presentation those in charge have an understanding of what to do and who their base can be. The entertainment business has to evolve into more stable where fantasy is concerned.

I'm 6 months late, but thank you for making this video. I too was disheartened and saddened when Netflix made the decision to pull the plug on a wonderful, colorful, brilliant story and series that is the Dark Crystal. I was under the belief that there were other projects that perhaps purchased their way to being streamed... this does make sense at the same time, because of the formula the people in charge used, makes no sense. I will be participating in to help hopefully bring AOR back as a fan can
They absolutely do need to continue on with the age of resistance it had a wonderful storyline about the whole entire history of the Gelfling and Skeksis and those were the great history stories that we needed to finish up with the movie itself and now for what they got going on now
I kept searching for when DC/AR was going to be released. The ONLY way I heard about it was when dreamfast came up on my youtube feed a few months ago. I have NEVER subscribed to a streaming service before and absolute would not have except for being able to watch this series. Once I've watched this another dozen times I'll likely cancel my subscription unless Netflix shares news that they are planning on another season. I've talked to several coworkers who thought the series was great and one young guy in the maintenance department was great at imitating Augrha from the series! Netflix's parameters for keeping or axing series doesn't appear to be based on human beings, but some non living standard that seeks to create its own reality.
Literally every single person I recommend this show to claim they won't watch it, despite loving fantasy or being interested in the plot, because they HATE the puppets. They say they freak them out, one of my friends actually got really freaked out when I showed them a pic of Brea. It's sad, I have no one to talk about this show with and it's one of my favourites.
Well thanks to a rewatch of an old robot chicken episode where there was a dark crystal reference rap song that made me intrigued and a fan of the dark crystal “series”.
A real shame , show was a masterpiece..I honestly forgot I was looking at puppets by end of episode 1 , and I every time I remembered, I marveled in what they created...what a shame.
Its pretty likely a significant portion of the fans and new viewers maybe didnt have Netflix to watch the series on so they streamed it from other places :/ It was a very vulnerable project to release all in one go/binge watch style, it would be interesting to know why it was released that way. That aside, having the 1 series at all is incredible, and in time it can gain more traction. I think fans need to know this is the reason why it was cancelled, so anyone who watched it outside of netflix can try watch it again on there - but with the cuties thing more people are cancelling their sub and its putting off people getting it now. Really just kind the worst conditions surrounding its continuation, crazy, seriously. ..
I think there's going to be big changes in streaming over the next few years. A lot of people have canceled Netflix already for various reasons (I did because I thought it was gross that Netflix would cancel this and then announce a few days later they'd be squirting out 6 new animated projects). I mostly watch dvds or indie animation on TH-cam now; I have zero expectations for anything good to come from a studio until they get their acts together.
The thing is Netflix doesn't even market stuff well... honestly they shouldve marketed it by sponsoring LA by night, Crit role, twitter storm, TH-cam teasers, and they sbouldve committed for 2 seasons at minimum
Mannnn, I had before the dark crystal watched a bunch of documentaries on Jim Henson and remembered but didn't comprehend that when I was little that his funeral aired on tv so when I saw that Netflix had made one of his series again and try to make it way better I was excited and loved the series. I was excited for another season but now, I big sad. If y'all have a change.org link for this I'll sign, could've easily made more viewership if they marketed more on the fact that he made our childhood.

I canceled my subscription because they would not make a second season. It was an awesome show. I've been watching The Dark Crystal since it came out. I'm a conservative and it made no difference that the power structure was matriarchal. If I had a woman that did better than me then, hell yeah . I'll raise the kids. Kids love me. I still remember how to build a couch cousion fort.
The movie came out in the early 80s so being born in 1987 I had seen the movie many times but a lot of people 25 and under probably never heard of it. This is the kind of show that needs you (if you didnt see the movie) watch and get into because there is a lot going on. Yet shows like Euporia which is another show about high school kids is a huge hit. All those shows are basically the original degrassi (80s-90s) just with different outfits and more drama. Btw I loved degrassi jr high and high but you get what I mean. Or make some students vampires or werewolves lol.

I've always hated how the people in charge of these companies never have any ambition beyond lining their pockets. That lack of passion for anything that isn't money always makes this world a little less worth living in.

I really hope Netflix will eventually realize the mistake of canceling Age Of Resistance or another streaming service will buy the rights to air the show. Lisa Henson had said that she understands how devastated many viewers are about the cancellation and are wondering what was going to happen next in the series. She also said the Jim Henson Company will try to find a way to continue the story in the future.

I tried googling to look for it but again, can't find it. But from what I read (or possibly watched) about 3 months ago, she talked about how she actually did not enjoy making Age of Resistance, she was glad she did, but doesn't look forward to doing another series, she'd rather work with the muppets or independent characters in other tv shows and features. So the interviewer asked, if she's not interested in finding another company like Hulu or Amazon to take on the next season, then will fans ever see what happens next. She said that her company has had success with its graphic novel series and if they proceeded to tell the events that follow season 1, then it would likely be in graphic novel format. So, no, she didn't confirm it, but I suspect 3 months later she probably still feels the same way. I'm peeved that I can't find the interview, maybe it was a youtube video, I don't know, but now I have no credibility on this lol.

Its such a huge shame it really is, i myself grew up with The Dark Crystal and i never once believed they would ever bring it back in the exact same style. So i was hugely over-joyed when i saw Age of Resistance it expands the lore and world of Thra.
Lisa Henson should be really proud what she did in honoring her father's work is very rare today, you dont get many new shows which stay 100% true to their original works, and as a big Star Wars fan, this is exactly the type of "creative" we desperately need over at Lucasfilm right now.
I really hope they are able to continue the show and another streaming service/distributor will pick it up. Unfortunately i have to say kids and young generations are fairly dumbed down today in the types of shows they consume, if a tv series or animated movie doesnt have fart jokes or anykind obvious direct of references to our modern society and culture (e.g. Minions), kids mostly loose interest.
I dont want to put the blame on them for they dont know any better its just how this era is today, ofwhich they are simply growing up in. But i do blame the companies that just keep putting out really dumbed down cartoons.

I watch Age of Resistance several times on Netflix, I lost count of how many times I watched this show...
Ridiculous they cancelled it. Blaming the fans for getting impatient, I mean wtf, I would sooner wait years for a sequel season as long as it happens.
But you do make a point that if they decided after 30-60 days, honestly I didn't even hear about the show until well after that point, and after I started watching it I became hooked, I didn't see it advertised anywhere, I just saw it on Netflix. So you are right they failed at the marketing.
As for them thinking that they can't sell people on puppets, that's stupid, from people I talked to this show was as popular as Game of Thrones, and it had the potential to be the next game of thrones.

Agreed. This is what I’ve always suspected: They want exponential profit growth, and that’s only possible through NEW SUBSCRIBERS. I think they’re looking for shows that will actively convert non-Netflix users INTO new subscribers.
But now that I think of it, by giving the green light to DCAR it’s clear they didn’t know wtf demographic they were aiming to attract. Anyone who already likes Henson stuff is probably also already a Netflix customer. If they really wanted new subscribers, they shouldn’t have teased us with one season of gold then dropping us. I totally support the Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance ever since I first saw it. Even after I got tired of waiting I tried to make a fanfic of the series and drew some pictures for the story along with some of my new characters that I came up with myself. This was really heartbreaking news for me. I really love and enjoy The Dark Crystal, I have been a big fan of the movie and I was really excited to find out they were making a new series on Netflix... After watching "Age of Resistance" I became an even bigger fan, the Jim Henson Company blew me away with the magic and wonder of Thra and bringing that to life in an even more epic way than before. Canceling this show saddens me, I really feel there's so much more they can do with the story and to expand on the little big screen content they have... Please give us more of The Dark Crystal.....
The thing is they didn’t promote it at all. Maybe I just missed absolutely everything but I literally only knew it was released because my sibling told me and knew I was waiting on it. I only knew a series was even being released because I kept looking it up. They didn’t market it at all tbh
So I think it's because of some of those things;
1 - The Pandemic.
Working on the set with the virus around would be dangerous, with dangers of Covid on the Puppets and costumes directly.
2 - The Production and Netflix's impatience
Netflix is an American company. They want products made fast and done well. But the truth is that the production of such a show took years. So of course, the more time and ressourceful a show is, the less likely it's going to get a new season.
3 - The Performance
You gave good reasons, but I also blame the lack of curiosity and will from Geeks and the public. Pop Culture is now more popular than ever, and people tend to watch the things that they already watch. Dark Crystal is still, sadly, a niche Fandom.
Stranger Things did work because people were getting nostalgic for a period most people knew (the 80's), and so they decided the milk the shit out of it.
Also, blame Netflix's impatience.
4 - Marvelism
To put it simply, AoR and the original movie are two different entities. With every different moods and different flow. The movie is much more spiritual, whereas the series is much more action/adventure driven, with jokes and quirky characters here and there.
5 - No Marketing
The series was advertised as for the fans of the first movie. But considering how poor it's success was back then, the Fandom only truly formed very recently. Hell! People still had very mixed feelings about the movie in the 2000's. So yeah, maybe advertising it to people who play DnD and fantasy games would have been a much better idea.
6 - Not enough Gossip
Netflix LOVES Gossip. If the show is getting talked about, they're sure they're getting millions. Hence why so many of them are centered around sex and violence, or Tokenism.
Remember the whole shtick with The Witcher blackwashing certain characters and allowed the screen writers to put more apparent non-sense social commentary into the show (Like the guards having crotch-shaped helmets and the "enslaved race" being represented by black people)? They included that on purpose because they knew people where going to talk about it. People love drama and getting angry.
Hell, shows like GoT still work to this day despite all the hatred each episode get, because people keep watching them! Same thing with the new Star Wars movies! People knew they were mediocre, but they kept watching and they made millions!
Or even, the future LOTR series, or even The Little Mermaid! They sparked tons of debates, so expect them to make millions or have good viewership!
Dark Crystal didn't spark anything. The marketing aimed at people who already knew the Dark Crystal (aka, not a whole lot), and it didn't had any element worthy of having it being talked about.
I don't think they need to worry too much about the props, sets and puppets too much since they can reuse 90% of it again.
So because Age of Resistance's sole purpose isn't to make Netflix money and make us stupider, it got cancelled.

When I saw the teaser for the first time around 3-4 years ago (I think) I was excited to see what the Jim Henson company would make now that this classic was about to return to screens.
I feel like Netflix's biggest mistake when releasing the show was not advertising it enough. The most I could find merch wise was the pop figures for the skeksis but even then it was hard for me to collect them all (thankfully I got all the characters before they stopped selling them)
If they were expecting millions of people to stop by and watch the show, the most they could do it advertise it more, they shouldnt have to expect the fandom to do the advertising for them.
I watched the series 3 times the year it came out. I was HOOKED. I'd been waiting for this series to become a thing for 20+ years. I was DEVASTATED when the word finally got out that it was canceled (and it wasn't very long ago either. I'm talking less than 5 months ago I found out and was literally waiting all that time before for some kind of notice.)
Cuties was an iceberg that they could have easily avoided! Then, they would still have enough money for TDC:AoR Season 2! 😡

I actually cried when I found out AoR was cancelled. I was angry at Netflix and I hate it, canceling a amazing show because of their own stupidity and then trying to blame the fans and show for it. I mean seriously 30 TO 60 DAYS??!! I found out about it the day after it came out and I think I first watched it the month after. I only found out about it because my brother told me about it after he stumbled upon an article about it or ssomething. THIS SHOW DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER, I wish I could thank to the Hensons and all the people who spent their time making this show.
Disney owns Jim Henson Productions...Why it ended up on Netflix is strange anyway. I say if netflix doesn't want it anymore, then Disney+ should take it over.

I just found your videos and feel so horrible that this world isn't getting a season two. I watched the series 3 times. Once by myself, and twice with my husband. The Dark Crystal was always my favorite movie along with The Last Unicorn and any of the Muppet movies. I loved the practical effects and just the world of Thra and I'm completely heartbroken that it had to end due to Netflix being stupid.
I still can't believe it tbh and didn't it win an award just before they cancelled? It had such great reception. And also watching the making of documentary the sheer passion and love put in by everyone, it makes me feel so sad for the puppeteers writers and actors and everyone. I can't believe my girl Deet is just gonna be left alone. I'm never forgiving Netflix they cancel so many great shows but Dark Crystal was so unique and just *sighs* I'm sad :(

I could see Dark Crystal fitting pretty well on Disney + actually.
I strongly doubt the Hensons would trust Disney with more of their property. They've done the absolute minimum with The Muppets, considering how many people want more of them. Disney's hemorrhaging money right now anyway; they're going to focus on the moneymakers like Marvel.

If I recall correctly, shows on Netflix are not allowed to move to other streaming or cable networks for a certain number of years regardless if they were cancelled or not.

I'm 16 and I have older siblings they showed me the original movie the Dark Crystal and I was so thrilled about the age of resistance series. I admire the work that was put into this series and I'm so disappointed that Netflix has cancelled another show for no reason. Hopefully, they somehow continue this and make so many people happy. :) (people who are having a hard time during covid I hope that everything gets better soon

Besides the "Sesame Street" Muppets, which the Jim Henson Company sold to Sesame Workshop in the 2000s, the other Muppets, those being the ones from "Fraggle Rock" and the TV special "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas", are owned by the Jim Henson Company.
I can remember when first watching AOR at launch and thinking "this is expensive, you can see the money on the screen" and wondering if Netflix is just being that generous or if the show is being set up to underperform. I adore DC, but it's not Lord of the Rings in terms of popular fandom, it was never going to explode out of the gate. Turns out that Netflix was not the right home for Thra. I would argue that the best option to continue this universe is a feature film to connect the show with the original. With puppets, not animation. It needs to be done properly. Dark Crystal without puppets is not Dark Crystal, imho.
They did nothing to promote it. 1 trailer and some behind the scene footage. So what fid they expect? With a library this big do you realy think people will watch something unfsmiliair to them. Even if people dont watch trailers, you see and hear it around making it more likely for you to watch it. They complain about production cost but dont try anything to make up for it
This show was absolutely amazing! As a fan of the original, it was awesome to watch this series with my son. The story was vast and engaging. Loved it and very bummed out they wont continue.
This devastating. So much love and care and talent was put into this show, while half-assed garbage shows like Kenobi almost immediately get greenlit for a second season even though almost everyone hated it. I know that’s Disney and this is Netflix, but this strange pattern of bad shows continuing and good shows getting canned exists on every platform.

Netflix doesn't own The Dark Crystal, not even partially, The Henson Company does. If anything happens, another streaming services will take it and continue it. HBO streaming has done this several times, Netflix will drop a series and then HBO will pick it up. Hopefully this is the case for the Dark Crystal.
Netflix owns distribution rights to AoR, so unless TJHC can buy those rights back, Netflix can turn down a continuation without giving up the rights. TJHC can't shop it around otherwise. There will definitely be more Dark Crystal, but it won't be AoR in all likelihood. I'm hopeful for more if the fans can keep growing. I see us as being in a similar place to Star Wars fans after RotJ and before the prequel films. Keep watching, keep buying merch, keep supporting TJHC.

It's been over a year, and I still feel just as empty about this as when it was first announced, and--not to sound melodramatic--I'm starting to think I'll never get over it.
I know how you feel, I feel the same way with this and other things. Like how I may never play season 2 Game of Thrones from Tell Tale Games, and how I may never get to read part 2 of Fire and Blood.

In general I think most series need at least two seasons to shine... Thats were a lot of people start watching anyways. Specially dark crystal since its such an unique concept and since they already made a huge investement in building all the scenary and the puppets.

I saw The Dark Crystal in a movie theatre in 1982; the next day I went back & watched it again. That's the ONLY time I've EVER done that for a movie.Then I waited 37 years for Age of Resistance. I can wait however long for a next season -- I feel ancient & patient like an urRu!

Its been like a year, and I'm still sour about it. What a brilliant show.
From a marketing standpoint, it seemed like they were running on the fumes of Game of Thrones, with the official instagram page starting hashtag groups saying "which clan will you join?", despite the fact that barely anyone outside the limited readership of JM Lee's young adult novels had any clue what they were. They should have focused more on the actual puppetry, showing Planet Earth style clips of the creatures of Thra.

You’re right. Netflix was foolish to cancel that awesome show. When it comes to media, it’s not always about the CG characters. I see sources where people were repulsed by the Yoda puppet in Phantom Menace and changed it to CGI whereas the baby Yoda is a puppet character that is adored. The point is, Netflix rejected to show the viewers what will happen next. The other Skeksis and Mystics, the Garthim Wars, who Jen and Kira’s parents really are, that streaming network took all that away from us as if it were thrown in the trash and is forgotten forever. Netflix lost its Dark Crystal spirit, it was getting good, but that spark of the biggest part of the story has faded. Netflix betrayed Dark Crystal. I still need to see what will happen to Rian, Deet, and Brea, and the other Gelfling. When and if the franchise flourishes once more, I would recommend the franchise to a friend or relative.

The first time i watched Dark Crystal, i was 8 years old and i fell in love with that world. Then Age Of Resistence comes out when I'm 21! I was so looking forward to a season 2 and see the Garthim Wars and answer the rest of my questions that ive thought about since i was 8. Im disappointed in Netflix. I really hope they watch your video and see that we want more!
I wish there was another venue for fantasy. One in which from production to presentation those in charge have an understanding of what to do and who their base can be. The entertainment business has to evolve into more stable where fantasy is concerned.
What whiplash to go from creating such a groundbreaking show, to talking about cancellation a few months after. Heres hoping that another streaming service will pick them up. Thanks for the informative video, will definitely be sharing with my friends.

I too was disheartened and saddened when Netflix made the decision to pull the plug on a wonderful, colorful, brilliant story and series that is the Dark Crystal. I was under the belief that there were other projects that perhaps purchased their way to being streamed... this does make sense at the same time, because of the formula the people in charge used, makes no sense.

They absolutely do need to continue on with the age of resistance it had a wonderful storyline about the whole entire history of the Gelfling and Skeksis and those were the great history stories that we needed to finish up with the movie itself and now for what they got going on now
I kept searching for when DC/AR was going to be released. The ONLY way I heard about it was when dreamfast came up on my youtube feed a few months ago. I have NEVER subscribed to a streaming service before and absolute would not have except for being able to watch this series. Once I've watched this another dozen times I'll likely cancel my subscription unless Netflix shares news that they are planning on another season. I've talked to several coworkers who thought the series was great and one young guy in the maintenance department was great at imitating Augrha from the series! Netflix's parameters for keeping or axing series doesn't appear to be based on human beings, but some non living standard that seeks to create its own reality.
Literally every single person I recommend this show to claim they won't watch it, despite loving fantasy or being interested in the plot, because they HATE the puppets. They say they freak them out, one of my friends actually got really freaked out when I showed them a pic of Brea. It's sad, I have no one to talk about this show with and it's one of my favourites.

Well thanks to a rewatch of an old robot chicken episode where there was a dark crystal reference rap song that made me intrigued and a fan of the dark crystal “series”.
A real shame , show was a masterpiece..I honestly forgot I was looking at puppets by end of episode 1 , and I every time I remembered, I marveled in what they created...what a shame.
From what I'm hearing, they didn't want a season 2 from the get-go...
DC should not go back to Netflix’s. Aside from being screwed over, this tied in with the cuties disaster will put Netflix’s in the hole not too soon
Its pretty likely a significant portion of the fans and new viewers maybe didnt have Netflix to watch the series on so they streamed it from other places :/
It was a very vulnerable project to release all in one go/binge watch style, it would be interesting to know why it was released that way.
That aside, having the 1 series at all is incredible, and in time it can gain more traction.
I think fans need to know this is the reason why it was cancelled, so anyone who watched it outside of netflix can try watch it again on there - but with the cuties thing more people are cancelling their sub and its putting off people getting it now. Really just kind the worst conditions surrounding its continuation, crazy, seriously. ..
I think there's going to be big changes in streaming over the next few years. A lot of people have canceled Netflix already for various reasons (I did because I thought it was gross that Netflix would cancel this and then announce a few days later they'd be squirting out 6 new animated projects). I mostly watch dvds or indie animation on TH-cam now; I have zero expectations for anything good to come from a studio until they get their acts together.

The thing is Netflix doesn't even market stuff well... honestly they shouldve marketed it by sponsoring LA by night, Crit role, twitter storm, TH-cam teasers, and they sbouldve committed for 2 seasons at minimum
Mannnn, I had before the dark crystal watched a bunch of documentaries on Jim Henson and remembered but didn't comprehend that when I was little that his funeral aired on tv so when I saw that Netflix had made one of his series again and try to make it way better I was excited and loved the series. I was excited for another season but now, I big sad. If y'all have a change.org link for this I'll sign, could've easily made more viewership if they marketed more on the fact that he made our childhood.

Cancelation reason isn't new information for me, but it was nice to hear your commentary on it. It's a terrible practice at Netflix, i'm hoping it finds a home at Amazon or Disney.

I haven't used Netflix very much, but... did they even do any kind of advertising when AoR first came out? They only promotion I've seen is the videos Netflix posted to TH-cam. Did they make any effort to introduce people to the show, or did they expect millions of people to find it on their own? I only heard about it months after release from Tumblr of all places...
I canceled my subscription because they would not make a second season. It was an awesome show. I've been watching The Dark Crystal since it came out. I'm a conservative and it made no difference that the power structure was matriarchal. If I had a woman that did better than me then, hell yeah . I'll raise the kids. Kids love me. I still remember how to build a couch cousion fort.

The movie came out in the early 80s so being born in 1987 I had seen the movie many times but a lot of people 25 and under probably never heard of it. This is the kind of show that needs you (if you didnt see the movie) watch and get into because there is a lot going on. Yet shows like Euporia which is another show about high school kids is a huge hit. All those shows are basically the original degrassi (80s-90s) just with different outfits and more drama. Btw I loved degrassi jr high and high but you get what I mean. Or make some students vampires or werewolves lol.
I was born 1991 and I watched it in my early teens and loved it and I still watch it and get captivated by the movie plus the Chamberlain is my favorite character fizgigs jump scare still makes me jump

Man, all I know is that after a binge watch a couple more shows, I think I’m taking back my sub. All I can hope for is that they make a comic or something. Otherwise we’ll never see what happens to Rian and Deet... AND DEET WAS THE FUCKING BEST DUDE
