I have a 2008 Chevy Silverado. I replaced the water pump. The old water pump did not have a thermostat. I bought a new thermostat and placed it into the water pump and installed it. When the truck is driving, the temp gauge stays in the middle. When I’m idle, the temp gauge raises above the halfway point. It stays between the halfway point and the 3/4 line. It goes up and down from this point until the vehicle drives, then it stays at the middle point. The heater works and there is no smell of coolant. Is this a problem?
It should not be an issue as long as it is not overheating! The gauge on the dash is not the most accurate, so it tends to fluctuate a bit occasionally. :-) Just keep an eye on things and ensure that the coolant level stays full, that the gauge does not go too high, and that everything should be good to go!
@@Amundred 2010 silverado a noticed that too the gauge temp goes up but not all the way so just about 1/4 when i drive goes normal stays in the middle ,, so i was wondering should i replace the thermostat ,,? or is that normal ,, i hope so ,,,
I changed the risistor no heat. Blower works. Fuses not blown. I get no heat at all. Should i cahnge the thermostat befor i end up checking the heater core?
Did you drain anything from the coolant or did you just dive in? If that's all the coolant that will come out. Then I'll take the route not to drain it.
The little bit that came out is all that comes out this way...the only coolant that will drain is what is higher than this point in the engine/radiator and you can control how much leaves the radiator with hose placement :-) Still enough to need a catch pan or something as it will be messy...but you are not losing gallons of coolant either
@@Amundred awesome. Thank you. Did the job earlier. Took me 13 minutes with my hands covered in slick coolant. Not a lot. But a little bit did come out. Thank you again.
Usually when a thermostat goes bad it gets stuck opened or closed and the temperature is usually steady still....usually...there are always special circumstances. Other than the dash gauge fluctuating, are there any other symptoms? Heat not working, smell of coolant when the vehicle warms up, etc? It is possible that the temp sending unit is going bad as opposed to a mechanical failure of a part too. The other likely issue would be air in the coolant system.
@JohnnyCoats-h2w how does the coolant level look? Is it full in the overflow tank? This is usually a sign of a bad thermostat, but I would just check to make sure it is full of coolant first.
thank you! i was looking for a good tutorial that was super easy and couldnt find any proper ones, i really appreciate it 👍hopefully itll fix my thermostat as well 😆!
Nice to see you giving that air bleed funnel a 2nd chance😂 What happened to the heated garage? You should have mentioned how you actually diagnosed that the issue was the thermostat originally 🤔
Yeah...the heated garage only works when you can close the door 😂 As far as diagnosis...the truck ran normally, but the temperature would rise to running temps and the heat would not blow warm air...and the coolant overflow tank was not getting as warm as it should. Then the truck temp would get higher than normal if it ran for a while and still no heat = bad thermostat... 😲 🤷

I didn't want to empty all of the coolant so I just did it this way...plus it was freezing and I did not want to spend more time than necessary out in the cold! 🥶

I just love having to go to a service place and they charge me $xxx to change a thermostat plus the diagnosis... thermostat job just do it. Well done!
Agreed! Just replace it and get it over with, super easy! Thanks for watching and commenting!

On my truck when i let it run for a bit. It starts to get hot. Would that be a bad thermostat too.
@@CodyLouis-sg2vv like overheating-hot? It definitely could be if the thermostat is stuck shut 👍

I would lean towards the thermostat as opposed to the heater core - it could be a blocked heater core, but the thermostat is a pretty common issue
Appreciate the knowledge

I just changed my thermostat and my truck started heating, any advice/solution?
Started heating? Like over heating?
Did you make sure that the thermostat is in the correct way?
Could be a faulty thermostat

I have one question..I have a 6.0 that is fluctuating on the tempature.. would that be a thermostat going out or the water pump?

@Amundred so my 07 Silverado new body style will start to run "hot" and the heat won't work what are your thoughts on that?
