It was really helpful for you to keep stressing the word “behavior”. Helped it to sink in that what we physically do matters, even beyond our thoughts. Thanks for all the examples!

Anytime Lauren! And you know, anything you learn that takes you to a more peaceful place, this is the way 🙂 and now not to confuse you.. but just to add to this, I think what we do matters because it’s a reflection of what goes on in the mind.
Our thoughts produce our feelings and our feelings procure our actions.
If we decide to go to a party even if it’s late, something we’ve avoided for long because we were afraid of losing sleep…that can really help! Now, it can on the surface seem like the behavior of going to the party was what helped. But, it’s not exactly like that.
Because the same behavior, if the idea was “I have to go to this party so I can sleep” is a sleep effort. And probably will lead to more struggle.
Whereas if the idea behind the behavior is “it’s ok if I sleep less, I can enjoy this party and I can see that I can do things I enjoy” then it’s just a nice thing we do. This leads to more freedom and peace.
Now this can easily lead to “ok so how do we change the thoughts?” - to me, education comes first, then it’s about letting go and allowing the thoughts to change by themselves.
Lauren, hope this made sense and that you’ll have nice weekend!

@@thesleepcoachschool8192 I'm glad it did :) I had a question.. I guess. So as you probably know, I've had a pretty terrible bout of Hypnic jerks on going since the last 2 months. However, this week has been pretty good to me, I had 2 nights where I didn't get a single jerk! But last night was different and I'm trying not to let it get to me. I've had a BUNCH of jerks and when I finally fell asleep and woke up in the morning, trying to fall back asleep was terrible, had hypnic jerks all morning so I just decided to leave bed. Are morning jerks anything to worry about at all? I thought I was getting better but this has my anxiety going again...

To all of Daniels viewers, I have used your approach and generally have slept better. A "bad night" before not caring and taking meds was 3-4 hours. Now is it 5 hours, with a rare 4 hour. Thus, I agree not caring is helping, but not perfect. But what is perfect? I can tell my sleep habits have changed, maybe because I am in my 30s and not in my 20s now? Who knows, but I certainly cant tell you why. Does this in the end have health effects? I dont know. Does this suck at times being low on energy, yes! But that is life. Would I like more sleep, who wouldnt!
Likely your response is stop checking your time. I really dont, when I wake up, I roll over and see the time. I lay there not worried, sometimes I fall back a sleep, or sometimes I am up at 4am. When this happens, I go work in my office.

I took meds for sleeping for a half year and I started to reduce it (now its 0). Few days ago i couldnt fall asleep so i took one but didnt help. That night i realized that pills dont help anymore, its only my brain which can make me sleep! Since i tell myself its okay to not to sleep until 2 if i cant or its okay to wake up at night. Your perspective changed my whole point of view of sleeping. Thank you for your work! I am from Hungary and most of the doctors here gave me pills and suggested relaxation training. I did everything! And nothing really worked until i found your channel. ❤

Hi Daniel, I would like to see an episode on what is normal for sleep. For instance, lets say 6.5 hours a night is great for me. For a "bad night" is 5 hours of sleep, but I have 2 or 3 a week. Is that normal? Or is it normal to have 1 bad night a week. I think this information would help people with insomnia coming from the perspective of a sleep MD. I think this would help with anxiety fears.

Thanks for this video ❤ I have a question. I consider myself as someone who is on the recovery journey. There are times when the “fear” goes away and I don’t think about sleep at all and sleep much better, even if I get “normal” nights with not great sleep. So the acceptance and belief is in the right place in me… However, for last few months I struggle again with hyper arousal around sleep. And there are times when the brain pattern of the fear of not being able to sleep is so strong that I find so difficult work about the feeling of unsafe and it keeps me anxious and awake. It’s like loosing the belief that everything is fine and there is no danger. I know that it is learned nervous system behaviour. But I find difficult to change that pattern at times, when the thoughts of danger comes back… I hope I’m clear enough 😁 Thank you 🙏🏻

Daniel, you've replied to me before which is great. I love your approach and I constantly try to put it into practice but the fear never seems to go away because I still (quite often) have very bad nights with only a couple of hours sleep. On these occasions I feel so bad the following day, in particular emotionally unstable, angry, unmotivated, depressed, headaches etc, that it is impossible not to 'fear' the likely consequences of not sleeping - nothing to do with long term health risks, literally the fact that I will go to pieces the following day. I just don't see how I can ever not care and not be fearful of this and not seek to avoid it, even if actually being awake during the night is not in itself dangerous. So for me, it is a big paradox, being awake at night is not dangerous or a threat but the consequences of that are very threatening to me and are real. Thanks a lot

On current dose of 15 mg a day I am not sleeping great . I am now trying to educate myself by following your channel (all great advice ) ready for when I come off this medication. Although I have slept on previous dose age of 25 and 20 mg - I now struggle on 15 mg . If I approach my GP over this they simply say - up the dose to sleep again as you was sleeping on 20 mg a day . Any advise would be greatly appreciated thanks ps - I have had sleep problems since June 22,

I think my insomnia comes from a deeper psychological level, I don't know I think I had this immense creativity and talents I always think at some point I was scared to lose it without knowing that I was, and I knew getting enough sleep would make me get the work done, but if I had known back then at first it was because of that I would have dealt with it but right now I'm a bit stuck. And I maybe think that I used to be very motivated and I wanted to do all kinds of stuff so I like started believing I didn't need sleep, so I wouldn't. Plus I have chest pain whenever I sleep less and I'm not overweight or anything

Helloo I just wanted to ask, I have had SEVERE insomnia for the last six months and I'm only 16, I didn't have anxiety and stress when I first had it but it made me stressful, and I get it I have to be brave and stuff but concerning the memory is there anything I can do? Like I've been sleeping for 2-4 hours each night and I've tried everything to keep my brain sane but it's one step forward two steps backwards, like read I watch educational videos I exercise sometimes, and I used to be a straight A student but now with the memory loss and lack of concentration it's not going well but the thing is, even if I wanted to do stuff that I enjoyed or smth I would have zero motivation to do and I used to be very motivated... I know it's but out of context but do you have any idea it's a bit like a loop.

Plus whenever I recover a night a bit the next day it's tenth time worse, it's like I have a fear to recover, or maybe believing my recovery won't last and I'll go back to it eventually so as if not to disappoint myself in a sense? Or it's like at some point, I think "I'm the one who's doing it" like it's my fault

Oh yes and it’s a common question. Basically imagine someone having a panic attack and asking them how to boil and egg… they probably won’t answer, because the brain is not prioritizing this when it thinks we are in danger. When we feel safe… then we remember easily

      Hi Tina,
I think those horror stories really are either from someone who never found helpful education or someone who isn’t actually wanting to get better and just wants to be in a community of people who are in the same place. And yes, I think your points is very true that when we think something and we compare that to now we can get confused. For example, we can start to think that we always fell asleep right away, and that we always slept through the night or things like that but when we honestly look back, that wasn’t the case. And when we aren’t comparing the now with some imagined past, things get easier.

It doesn’t help that I have seen other videos explaining how insomnia causes things like heart attacks. I’m only 22 but my fear of this is still there. Hi Stephanie,
Thank you for sharing the above and it is a very common thing that causes insomnia, worrying about your health that is. And exactly like you say, there’s so much scary information out there that doesn’t help!
I think it is important to know that insomnia has never been shown to cause any health problems. In fact there was a very large study including millions of people that was published in early 2019 that show that those with insomnia and those without insomnia have the exact same life expectancy! pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30529432/
I actually wrote the book called why we don’t sleep the covers in more depth why there is so much and helpful information out there.
