Cruise sure knows how to give a haunted look. His ability to convey emotions is underrated, overshadowed by his incredible stunts.
I don't like that look, Mav

Dude this movie was so emotional for me 😭

Like father, like son! A great call back to the original movie.
Yep including the opening scene with Danger Zone.

Really felt the pain Maverick felt here, one of two times I felt tears building during the film

What added to it was Penny seeing Maverick's expression... She knew what he was feeling.
@moistmanm9 yeah fictional characters. It’s such a good movie because it was an emotional experience. Have some respect.
Imagine having no heart
Shut up
Epic moment right when this scene cuts too. Penny sees Maverick outside stunned and while she was smiling and having a laugh with him earlier, she could tell he was hurt and I think she genuinely felt hurt throwing him out after seeing that. This entire movie was written and acted so well. The soundtrack and the camera angles, all of it. If you haven’t seen it yet then please do! In my opinion it is the best sequel to ever be made and brought back nostalgia without ruining it and not doing justice to the original. This had Terminator 2 vibes when I left the cinema thinking damn that was better than the original, and that’s saying something!
She knew all about Goose. She was the admiral's daughter mentioned twice in the first movie, first by Goose himself then by his wife Carole. She knows exactly why he's hurting. But the thing is, even if she hadn't had him thrown out (which really was just because of policy/rules) he still would have been hurt the moment "Great Balls of Fire" began. All she did, inadvertently as it was, was provide him a way to walk away from it without people noticing.
Nothing but Goosebumps watching this scene

@@bradnov89 Yep
Indeed
One of the most powerful scenes ever and the score and Tom's performance are just perfect combined with the haunting flashbacks
If you think this is a profound scene, then you appreciation of film is on the lowest standard. Rooster (what a joke) would never have known the details. He never knew is father. He was too young. He would have grown up to be something totaly different. He wouldnt be playing great balls of fire on a piano becuse he wouldnt have cared less. And the navy would never let a dude like this fly anyways. He has no emmotional invesment. You have to know somebody to love them. Amd he becomes a carbon copy? Rediculous. Lazy writing. This movie stunk beyond belief.
The casting and writing for this film was flawless. Very rare in modern films.
Ppl say it saved Hollywood at the time
Lmao, Hangman's reaction in the next scene realizing he yeeted a superior officer the previous night.
At least it was a fair game since it's the Bar's rule
Of course it didn't stop them getting their asses whooped during training
I like that it’s taking a call back that calling back to a fun scene during the first one, but also making Mav relive the trauma of loosing goose.
Man, the score, the slow pan across the cadets, the flashbacks, and then Maverick’s face. No words. Just pain.
This movie and Spider-Man: No Way Home are examples of how Hollywood should treat movies with nostalgia while also going with its original story. While movies rely on nostalgia bait just for the sake of money, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Top Gun: Maverick are movies that show Hollywood that nostalgia can be done the right way and not be forced down peoples throats just for the sake of the movie. If Hollywood is gonna make movies with nostalgia then they have to do it right. This movie along with Spider-Man: No Way Home are examples of that, and I loved them both and possibly my fav movies of all time.
watched both of these two today lol
@@Miftahul_786 national cinema day ftw
@@thomastullie yes my mannn. peak cinema
Add _Ghostbusters: Afterlife_ to that list.
No Way Home actually didn't make any sense though. People just ignored the plot holes because of nostalgia
Maverick actually told a sensible story that doesn't break its own internal logic just for nostalgia
Miles Teller really suits for Goose’s kid. Very good acting..
I agree. It's honestly eerie how much Miles resembled Goose in this film. Hats off to the casting department.
Not gonna lie this song is actually so fun and catchy but this moment at 1:58 oh man😭😭😭. Powerful scene
I never saw the original before seeing this in theaters. But man, this movie was able to make me cry. The way this scene conveys emotion without needing to see the first movie is really good movie making.
That’s one of the things that makes this movie so great. You don’t even need to see the original Top Gun to understand
@@superjackster0165 I went with my friend and I hadn't seen the original Top Gun (he saw the original) and when it got to this scene, he explained the callback to me and my heart broke during this scene.
Same here.
I cried in the movie theater when Goose died when I was 15 years old. I cried just now watching this. Wow. Great scene.
He was an amazing drummer in his teens, now Rooster has becomes a skilled pianist
Not quite my tempo
I AM UPSET
Was he rushing or dragging while playing the piano this time ?
His son plays and sings the song he sang with Goose.
A scene that clearly shows the trauma of the past.
Miles was a drummer in a previous movie, I bet he rehearsed this so many times.
I actually thought Mav getting thrown “overboard” was pretty funny, especially the goofy face Mav makes afterwards. But then the flashback with Goose came…
The emotions on Maverick’s face combined with the flashbacks and Rooster’s performance on the piano are just incredible and perfect and powerful in the movie along with the music
This was actually the best movie for 2022
This currently my favorite film of 2022

Brilliant piece of acting by Tom Cruise
EPIC SCENE.....love the look on Maverick's face and the flashbacks!!!!
It's also brilliant scripting how the scene came into being. Rooster enters the bar. Hangman plays "Slow Ride" already preparing the taunts against Rooster's cautions flying, concluding with "I love this song!" Rooster takes up the gauntlet, stifles the jukebox and takes the helm with "Great Balls of Fire" on the piano - and the drama evolves. I could not have come up with those ideas.
The pain in maverick’s eyes says it all!
That's Goose's boy right there.

Excellent Tom Cruise flick. One of my all time favorite summer blockbuster movie ever 2022. And the Great Balls of Fire is definitely my favorite scene in that film. Also, I love both Top Gun movies like the first and original 1986 version is the best.
i watched the first Top Gun a couple times before i went to see the second in cinema this scene completely caught me off guard i silently cried for a bit, the way Tom Cruise captures that feeling of still being haunted by Gooses death it reminds you that Maverick may be one of the best pilots in the world but he is still human and has to deal with problems most normal people go through in their lives.
Goosebumps when I saw this the first time

With nostalgia being a trend in Hollywood recently, this movie seems to be the only one to do it right.
This scene may be a callback, but not as fanservice; as texture to the drama.

Nice profile
I still think Creed is the gold standard of these kind of sequels but this is easily the best one since then
Spider-Man: No Way Home is also another example of how to do nostalgia right. NWH and Top Gun: Maverick are examples of how Hollywood should treat movies that involve nostalgia bait and not rely on it just for the sake of money.
No Way Home did it the best. This or Rocky Balboa was a close second.
I really love how emotional and well-acted this part is. You can see how traumatized and guilt-ridden Maverick is after seeing how much Rooster resembles his father.
greatest movie dedication tony scott
I like how rooster kept his father’s sunglasses to remember him how he would’ve been a hero.
one of the best squeals ever made....well done ...bravo......
The first movie flashbacks made me emotional 😭
When Hons Zimmers music kicks in, it makes this flash back a killer scene 😢😭
Whats the music called?
@Nathanga007 The son is singing great balls of fire on the piano. But when it fades into the background, Maverick remembering Goos's accident flashbacks soundtrack of Hans Zimmer is where it's very touching, so just type in soundtrack Maverick, and you can hear all the music from the soundtrack. They're all good. Hope this helps.
I love the contrast between Maverick and Rooster here. Rooster is playing the song and having the time of his life with his friends while Maverick is clearly tortured hearing it. Rooster is a well adjusted guy and for him this song is likely tied to the best memories he had with his father of which he probably doesn't have many of. Despite losing his dad at a young age he's come to terms with it. But Maverick never really came to terms with it and is still haunted by Goose's death. And as a result the song only reminds him of Goose's death. The song has two completely different meanings for Rooster and Maverick and those meanings say a lot about who they are and how they've grieved
It's crazy how much Miles Teller looks like Anthony Edwards.
whay a scene from 1:58 omg powerfull nostalgia here with the anthem vibe playing at the background, might be one of the most emotionnal scene ever seen!
Don't know how many time I cried while watching this movie. There are so many scenes like this one that touch your soul and tear the heart out.
I feel that the flashback inserts addresses the theme of post-trauma (maybe PTSD?). The trigger is Rooster playing the piano, as it brought up the memory of Goose doing the same thing. It followed with flashes of the training incident.
Memory retrieval maybe.
Rooster and Goose almost look identical

Yeah good casting choice
Right?!?!? Casting did amazing!
Almost cried when I saw this in theaters
Same!
This scene and the background score just 😢😢😢😢😢😢
The adaptation of gooses theme from the original one, while quietly hearing the whole bar singing great balls of fire, whilst seeing flashbacks to the first film. Man this scene was perfect
I cried a lil here and lil more during his talk with Iceman
Both of them are vulnerable middle-aged men compared to their primes who competed to each other excessively.
Great scene bring back memories of my best friend who died 20 years ago tragically.
same my childhood best friend was murdered 5 years ago and i was only 1 mile away when it happend she was shot twice in the neck at work at 4:30am
Goose was like a brother figure to Maverick.
I think the fact rooster goes after maverick to save him shows he remembers the love and bond that goose and maverick had they were like brothers and rooster just knew he had to save maverick because its what his father would of done
This scene always makes me cry. End of a era
1:50 when you start to remember the good old days....
Mav just looks ABSOLUTELY DESOLATED in this
Hey love this scene tom cruise great acting
Goosebumps
When it flashes to the original you really notice just how perfect the casting of miles teller was he looks just like Anthony Edwards did
In real-life, Miles Teller is younger version of Sean Penn.
I love how they close-uped the scene of goose and little rooster... He was there during that iconic moment... and the goose blood still runs through him
The heartbreak Tom shows here... remembering his friend. Losing him. Having to hold back his friends son to protect him. God that hurts. Maverick may be a badass but hes still human.
I guess Maverick forgot that she “Lost that Lovin Feelin!” Lol
This scene hit Maverick hard. I can feel his pain
If you think the scene is really good, know that Glen Powell (Hangman's actor) almost got casted as Rooster. Cant imagine this scene with him singing 😂
Why does this scene make me cry so hard?
the ptsd stare was well portrayed here, it shows how mav has been carrying that guild for 3 decades
Hands down - one of the best sequels ever
Everything about this scene is perfect. The music, the flashback images, the acting. So emotional.
Feeling god damn nostalgic
This brought me to tears in the theater. And honestly I’m not even old enough to truly appreciate the first one. I had seen it once or twice, but it was Tom’s acting here that really brought this scene full circle.
Just seeing goose playing the piano
And seeing the f14 spin just gave me so much tears i could not stop crying
Almost me cry he reminds me of Goose 😢😢😢😢💔💔
Memories either kill you or make you stronger Yes Sir 🙏😔😎🙂🇺🇲🪖
This was both a good and sad scene to watch knowing that the song gave Pete flashbacks to when he was younger and when Goose was still alive.
Is it just me or is Rooster wearing his dad’s sunglasses?
One of the greatest and saddest scenes of all time
I'm not crying... You are crying!

This is honestly such a great scene, I love it. But I got to say, Miles teller looks so much like goose! Lastly, It’s so sad to see goose and his gosling with Maverick, and Mav feeling grief and guilt over goose.
It was still tragic loosing "GOOSE" in the first movie. However the event was preventable, the MAVERICK & GOOSE were over anxious to score points towards graduation
