Thank you for watching! Woodturning is a hobby of mine that I thoroughly enjoy! I often design the piece that I am working on as I am shaping it on the lathe, making the final project design different from the last.

Very pretty! This is the first time I saw someone burn a bowl. I did see it on a tabletop before. It does look better on the inside than the outside. It kind of gives a "black hole" feeling.

from such a small piece of log to make such a beautiful plate, you must be able to! well done, excellent!
so do they smell super woody?? and does the burnt wood have a burnt smell?? this looks so dope i want one
As long as you keep a good linseed coating, it should protect it. Alternatively, you could a give it a polyurethane coating to prevent any tastes leaking through.
@@zacharytaylor190 I am just happy with burnt smell....instead of those chemicals
@@adr23 linseed oil smells like flax, because it is literally flax oil. Nothing synthetic there. Polyurethane is a type of plastic and doesn't have a taste or smell.

Is there any reason to burn the wood other than aesthetic? longevity or something
great work btw
Helps against moisture and mold
I think it has something to do with Carbon? 🤔
Nope i think its for aesthetic
i mean it hardens the wood so theres that
@@lilstubbs9553 That I can't answer.
What I know is that in South America, people drink Chimarrão (a tea) in Cuias (A cup made of a cut gourd).
And it was pretty common, before other more modern methods, to burn the interior of the gourd so that mold wouldn't form.
I myself did make Cuias as a hobbie and I did test them in that regard.
Yes, without burning the inside of the gourd (or finishing it with food grade lacquer or something) the inside would create mold after some uses of the cup.
AMAZING AWESOME PERFECTION
Simply beautiful and very talented
That actually turned out much nicer than I expected.
Sooo Satisfying and cool and awesome videos❤
Wow . Wood work quality to be proud. Yea a surface burn preserves the wood.

Yes. Yes it was definitely worth it.
❤muito lindo parabéns.
You need to reinforce and weigh down the bed/frame. You've got a heap of vibration going on there, minimise that and it'll be _much_ smoother to work.
So Satisfying ❤
Esta é uma maravilhosa obra de arte. Parabéns.
This was a beautiful piece of work. I look forward to seeing more.

Genuinely asking, is it safe to eat from that bowl?
Good question 👌 the loose layer of charcoal has been removed and It’s been finished with a food safe oil, so in theory, yes! But, I always recommend only dry or display use with burnt bowls just to be on the safe side 👍
@@HenryKeateCarpentry ah that makes sense! Didn't expect a reply. Thanks anyway

Sustainable Manufacturing leaves the chat
How so?
I hope somekind of machinery will be invented for single wood piece bowl where we can just take out the wood to create the hollow space without converting it to dust...we can make multiple bowls that fit into one another in this manner...

For a sec i thought you gave that wood a top hat
Thought I was the only one.
I'd like it burnt on the outside, but that is too gorgeous!

Alguien me explica el por qué se debe ese paso de quemar la madera??
it seems to be for beauty, but then he went too far with the firing
Era por preferencia pero despues se la quito porque no le gusto.
Es solo por estética, pero se arrepintió de hacerlo por la parte de atrás de la olla y prefirió hacerlo por dentro.
I cut down 2 100+ year old cedar trees last year. I would love to see what you could do with some of that. I mean the one tree has so many Burles on it, but it is also 2 foot across but it is some beautiful wood.
🎉🎉
Just me and my dumb brain thinking that he screwed a mini top hat on the wood.
I’ve seen it in Minecraft🐔🐔
Why you burn it
Charring wood is done primarily for aesthetics i believe, but there may be some kinor benefits to doing it as well
@@bonkazonk4020In the modern age it's mostly aesthetic.
However the benefits are not just aesthetic.
It prevents rot from setting, prevents infestation, redices weathering, helps provide a smoother surface (requires sanding/working after charring) and makes the wood harder (in the charred areas.)
So if you wanted a good spear, charring the tip would make it better (if you didnt have access to make a stone tip.)
It would also help posts set in or on the ground from rotting, was often used in wooden structures back in the say.
It can also make tool handles more comfortable, because you can make them smoother, and soak finish easier.
That said, I don't like it aesthetically, so I dont use it
@@autumn5592 oh I'm aware there were some benefits, I was just uncertain what they were so thanks for clearing it up. As for the aesthetics, I personally love the look, so I'd do it on everything I've got lol
This sound is so satisfying

I tried your method and wood burned and burned my house down. You owe me a house now, thanks
HALLELUJAH, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL GIFT YOU HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH FROM ALMIGHTY GOD, WELL DONE
Is the firing of the surface layer of the wood functional or is it for an aesthetic effect ?
Bit of both, burning and then applying an oil is a way of preserving the wood - but I’m a bit obsessed with how it looks on oak and ash woods 😂
Wow it looks fancy ..it will be good to eat nachos in it.
Very good video, wish you good health, thanks
