  • NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman Revealed on a recent podcast the 3 Teams In On Calgary Flames Jakob Markstrom These Teams are the New Jersey Devils, the Toronto Maple Leafs & the Ottawa Senators. Along with the teams an asking price was recently shared and its for a first round pick and a good prospect.
In this video I go over the teams, the asking price being too high or just about right, and if this is setting up to be a bigger trade between the NJ Devils & the Calgary flames.

CGY is attempting to drive up the price on a player with a full NMC. Said player is also 34. They're not getting 7th OA or 10th OA from OTT/NJ without retention or another asset being involved. I feel like they're intentionally over asking in the hopes of "settling" on a return of a top 10 pick. They can keep their pissed off goalie for that price.

As a #2 yeah but not at an inflated price and definately not for the 1 draft pick we took a severe beating to get. Markstrom to me, is not worth the 10th pick straight up. In 2013, Schneider was younger, and his GAA & SV% were very good, the last two yrs. in Vancouver (regardless he was a backup transitioning into a starter). Swayman is probably the only goalie worth trading the 10th straight up, but Boston is probably going to get him to sign long term. Anyone else is probably a package deal between both sides of a trade. If we get Markstrom, I would like Coleman, Andersson, or Weegar (most likely not tradeable atm) in a package deal along with him. I looked at other goalies over the last couple of months. Ullmark (BOS) - would be good for the reg. season, but his playoff numbers have not been great. Hill/Thompson (VGK) - though won a cup & Vegas has perhaps a cap-crunch situation, neither have played around 50-55 games in a season (I see a goalie playing 2/3 of the season as being one of the best). Gustavsson (MIN) would be interesting, but again see Hill & Thompson from above. Saros would be the safest, though his win total in postseason play is under .500, but has better SV% & GAA compared to Ullmark. No matter how you slice it, the goalie can only do so much, and the defense needs to have higher numbers in hits and blocked shots next season, in order to go far in the postseason.

Another top 10 pick is CGY's grail, right? Marky isn't waiving for OTT, I'd be shocked if he did while in his right mind. 10th for Marky no retention and straight up isn't fair value, and Fitzgerald knows that.
Seems to me like CGY has one avenue for another 2024 top 10 pick, while Devils have more than one avenue for a goalie improvement. To me, that's becoming more likely to happen if Conroy doesn't budge on retention or another asset for 10th.

NJ's the only one with a top 10 pick on that list you stated, and let's be real that's precisely what a rebuilding franchise wants. Not sure what Toronto could realistically give future-wise, and LA's options might not be as attractive (Kaliyev? Seems to be pawned off in every LAK rumor). Maybe it is Detroit, that could work. Good on them if they want to give up their pick. Of course, all of those options would require Markstrom to OK.
Markstrom is Tom's preferred option, that's true, but he's hardly the only option. Personally as a fan, I'd much rather Tom go with plan B or C if it's 10th for Markstrom straight up - take it or leave it. We'll see what happens, but I really wouldn't underestimate NJ's ability to walk away.

If Jersey wants to stay a middling team, that struggles to make the playoffs on a consistent basis and is not close to competing for a Cup, then continuing chasing young talent. The Devils have good young talent. They need to manage their assets and start chasing battle tested, two-way players (that bring skills other than a ‘good shot’), and specifically legitimate starting goaltending. Jersey doesn’t need to give up the farm to bring in these types of players, but you need to stop over valuing a 10th overall draft pick and young prospects that are not gonna get enough ice time to prove themselves anyways. Conroy is trying to leak trade rumors and drive up the value that he can get in return for Markstrom but all he's actually accomplishing is pissing off the guy he hopes to move. Markstrom isn't likely to agree to waive his NMC to go just anywhere and the more COnroy jerks him around, the less likely Markstrom is to cooperate to help Conroy in any way. Markstrom is not worth the 10th pick even if salary was retained, in my opinion. He's not worth a top prospect, either. He's worth a 3rd and a depth player at best. He's always been up and down in his career, he's not a goalie with year after year dominance who can command a big return in a trade. SO yes, if there's a package deal made involving several pieces, then NJ would have to be getting one hell of a return in order to make this worth doing. At this point, given what Calgary thinks they can squeeze out of Fitzgerald, NJ would simply be better off spending those same assets on someone who is younger and more likely to be the backbone the Devils need in net. If Conroy keeps this up, he's going to end up settling for peanuts in return for Markstrom because he'll have repeated the same mistake he made by balking at the previous trade deal with NJ.

The main issue will be other teams that are also in the hunt for goalies, but I think NJ is a team players are seeing as a top choice place to play. Brossoit hasn't had the workload of a starting goaltender yet, but he's certainly played great in 23 starts this season. Don’t get me wrong, I like their young defence. But like you said, maybe one solid NHL veteran to even out the pairings and one 6-7 guy to add some depth. The Flames are not in a win now window, they are looking for picks to get there. Are the Devils building, or are they ready to compete? If compete then Markstrom might be the answer. Conroy trying to get more pieces back in a markstrom trade is funny, you are not getting a 1st and a player for a 35 year old with no money retention. Trade Holtz and a 2025 2nd. I would trade a 1st and a couple players for Saros not markstrom

Are you high?!! One draft pick for a 9th isn’t the same value as a 10th for a goalie, one goalie can make a teams season, one defensemen can be covered up by other d men playing well too

I never said a draft pick for a ninth, I said to get a forward or defenseman to help the Flames next season.
Question in the video was Would you be willing to part with your 9th O.A. draft pick for a 34 year old forward or defenseman? Seen a lot of people saying the Devils should throw in more to get the trade done where that's alot to give up for an aging player

@@THEHOCKEYSKATEDOWN the flames aren’t one player away from being a deep playoff run team, the devils are, yes the 10th pick is worth an aging player when that player has been putting up some of the best stats for their position on a team that’s holding him back. If jersey wasn’t cheap at the deadline and didn’t push for retention and got Marky they’d have made the playoffs.

Devils should stay far away from the goalie market and bring back Kappo Kahkonen. Shore up your defense first. Not even Shesterkin can save this mess of a defensive system. Also the only goalie worth of the 10th overall is Askarov and he isn't available. Or Swaymam but same story there. Maelstrom isn't worth the 10th. Not even close.

@stefaandeswert377 But Askarov isn't a proven #1 NHL goalie (he only played 4 NHL games) and he has no NHL playoff experience whatsoever.

Lets all be honest. FITZGERALD sucks at GM.
HOW many more seasons with absolute crap 💩 goaltending will be tolerated in NJ?
Allen SUCKS. A totally washed goalie who couldnt crack the lineup of one of the worst teams in hockey.
Allen only has a job because Brodeur is his old golfing buddy from St. Louis.
Fitzgerald already BLEW the Markstrom trade midseason at the 11th hour.
Fitz BLEW the Rango & Toffoli trades.
Fitz overpaid for Hamilton, Palat, Timo, & Macdermid.
How much more incompetence will the lame Harris/Blitzer ownership tolerate?
When the GM & front office is NOT committed to winning, then how is the team going to be?
