Jakob Markstrom TRADED To The NJ Devils For Kevin Bahl & 1st Rd Pick!

- The Trade Has Finally happened, Jakob Markstrom was Traded by the Calgary Flames to the NJ Devils For Defenseman Kevin Bahl & a 2025 1st Rd Draft pick.
This was a trade thats been in the works since last years trade deadline and it finally became official today that the Devils have found their #1 goalie for next season in Markstrom.
There was alot of trade rumors going around about Ullmark, Saros, Gibson but the package going to Calgary made more sense for Tom Fitzgerald and he made it happen.

Glad we kept the 10th pick, Holtz, and Mercer. Only concern is Markstrom’s durability at this age.
I agree 100% Markstrom needs to play great and can he still do it to play out his contract, well see

It's good for us, we get a #1 goalie at a lower cost than expected and created space on D to get a free agent
I am just relieved it's done and over with. I think it was a fair deal on both sides. Bahl was a big defenseman who wasn't physical enough. He will need to develop that more in Calgary to flourish. Hopefully, Fitz can sign Zadorov in free agency.
Thats who I want too Mike, Zadorov or Tanev, both guys battle and compete. Glad it's done too I almost did a Devils Knights trade video last night, thank God I didnt lol

@yoholmes273 If that turns out to be a late round pick, hell naw. It's not like Fitz has been knocking late round 1st round picks out of the park. Mercer was the one gem, the rest haven't amounted to anything or at least just became trade assets.
I like this move a lot but hopefully no more injuries

With Rugowski as goaltending coach and Brodeur yelling on national TV that goalies have gone soft and can play more, what can go wrong? I like this deal but note he didn't play over 50 games last season. Part of that may have been because he did not play as much at the end of the season when the Flames petered out of any shot at the playoffs.
I like the deal, Markstrom was 6th amongst starters in GSAE/60 last season, and was once 2nd in Vezina voting. The cap cost is low for a guy like that.
I just enjoy venting about how this franchise has managed goalies, which I think is a valid complaint. If we see him getting ridden like we did Vitek when he had a tweak, Blackwood playing right after surgery, and Daws playing something like 9 starts in a row as a 23 year old last season; I'm going to go ballistic.
Lol, I know right Dave, I was shocked at the Ah its okay shake it off Mentality bc some of these players do need time to heal, but on the other the players that milk it is what hurts this. Hopefully between Markstrom, Allen, and I still believe Kähkönen put up good enough numbers to earn a 2 way deal. Kallgren is gone maybe Kähkönen gets that as a security net for us in case of injuries.
I like this deal, Markstrom is good and maybe getting him shows Free Agents that NJ could be good enough to sign with as a UFA. Fitzgerald is not done and im so excited to see what moves hell make in the next couple of weeks
@@THEHOCKEYSKATEDOWN I think Kakhonen gets a job as a 1B or even 1a. If Ottawa can't upgrade in the market (they will try for Gibson or Ullmark), I could see him playing there.

Green made a statement that he wanted 'full roster control'.
Which indicates that Fitz was telling Ruff who to play, when & where....which is OUTRAGEOUS.
FITZ is a total clown and as long as he is a GM the Devils will never be a consistent contender
I’m glad the devils got a goaltender that has over a .900 SV% the thing that worries me is that he is older and injuries with older goalies hasn’t been in greatest favor for the devils especially in the goaltender category.
The age & health going forward is what worries us all, but if he can replicate last season that would be awesome for the Devils
@@THEHOCKEYSKATEDOWN I agree. As much as I wanted Saros but that would cost way too much but overall it’s a great trade, I’m sure if fitzy shores up the D and adds a few depth pieces, by April of next year we will be back in the playoffs
Love it , didn’t break the bank or roster and sets up for future moves. Hopefully Marky is a wall as well as Allen. Def a top 6 forward incoming and top 4 physical vet D . I’m just excited to see who . We still have that 10th overall
I agree Alex, I love it too. Came at a lower cost than expected, created a space for us on D to get a free agent and what can we do with our pick & Holtz now, curious but its going to be something good hopefully

I like the part about Calgary retaining some salary and I don't think Fitzgerald gave up too much. What he's paying the goalie tandem is insanely great. I think Jacob will be motivated by the move. Now Zadarov please! LFGD 💥

Like the deal, gonna miss Bahl but live No 10th, No Mercer, No Holtz, and they retained… thats awesome, FitzMagic we def need to get a big D man either trade or FA, focus on backend out…. More moves to come cant wait!!!
Great trade Fitzy made. 2025 not this years pick and Bahl not Holtz, mercer, nemec or other bigger name prospect. Salary retained & created a spot on D to get a free agent, great move all around!
This is a good move in the short term. It does not address the issue of goaltending in the long term. Hopefully they look into that in the next year.
Very true, but I feel like they'll wait and see with how Markstrom does, maybe they'll go on a year by year basis with him if he does well, but also looking for a younger goalie during that time too

My only concern is if Markstrom can stay healthy, but with Allen they can have a 60/40 split and help keep them both in good shape and reduce the risk of injury due to overplaying either guy. I think this deal works out best for NJ but if Calgary can get Bahl to step up his physicality, he will turn out to be a really dependable defenseman for them. Now it's going to be VERY interesting to see what Fitz's next moves are going to be. That #10 pick and still having Holtz gives him some real value to make a big splash before diving into free agency. I'm excited!
Exactly Walt the excitement of our next move had me more excited than this trade lol. I liked getting Markstrom but we all just hope he can maintain his play from last season & stay healthy, But this next trade if it could involve Holtz, our 10th overall and let's say Marino than im curious what Fitzgerald can land with that
i like the trade and i am not listening to others on the internet cause everybody has different opinions but we got our goalie we have some work to do.
And Fitzgerald will do that work Kev, 16 million in cap space for Free agency & a lot of assets he could use for a big trade

Kevin Bahl is NOT a player worth crying about losing... We just upgraded our goaltending in a massive way. Hopefully that pick ends up being #32, LGD
That would be awesome! 🤞, im not sour on losing Bahl he made alot of mistakes last season and for a big guy played soft more often than not. This trade created a roster spot to bring in a defensive D

This will be Markstroms 16th season. He's a very good goalie and we got a good deal... glad we got the break on the cap hit for the first rounder and we didn't lose the high pick we got this year. But I would consider him a good #2. I don't know what he was promised. But older goalies tend to break down and they get slower. Plus the Devils management has had a habit of making #1's play too many games. Sure Martin was the guy who always wanted to play every game but that type of goalie is rare. I think the Devils should agressively go after a younger #1 type goalie and then one or two rock solid defensemen... hopefully with some hitting and intimidation factor. There is no one on the team right now that can play and fill the enforcer role since we lost Wood. If we don't go after a solid #1 younger goalie, I would consider the Markstrom trade partially a "CYA" move on the part of Fitzgerald.
I agree Mal definitely need an enforcer type player. Markstrom if healthy can be good for us, gives Schmid, Daws, Poulter time to develop and if not time to get a younger goalie for the future

I like Skjei too, but they said hes looking in the 7 million AAV range, rather go for Zadorov or Tanev, theyll be cheaper

Get Brady Tkachuk… holtz, Palat & 10th overall pick. Ottawa is a bad organization and he probably have his suit case packed already. Remove that salary cap from palat and get solid D-defenseman + zadorov.
You're thinking like I am, it's time for Fitzgerald to go all in and I agree with the names you mentioned
