  • I hope this observation on how she sings helps you figure out how the voice works better, so you can learn how to make smart choices in your own voice.

    What a wonderful and educational analysis! The instrument is called xun, a globular, vessel flute from China and one of the oldest musical instruments. I think the xun blended beautifully w/ her voice. Thanks for the reaction, keep up the good work Sam :D

    I didn't even switch it on yet, I'm so excited because it's one of my most favourite songs. I'm so happy to see you reacting to it. I'm gonna enjoy it a lot! ❤️

    The fact that you immediately acknowledged that some people may not be able to see as you were describing, shows how much you care and how empathetic you are to everyone who may be following your channel. 💓

    sandy is in her 50s . she looks even younger than herself in 1990s. she is super popular since late 80s. this song is her last hit song in China. making hits after 30 years is really hard. I just love her when I was a kid. her biggest hit is from 2001 when I was 5. every one can sing that song in China.

      I've listened to her songs in the 90s. I think she's great although I don't understand mandarin. Which song was that in 2001?

    About nasality (or not), I wonder how much of it is just language. Some languages have nasal sounds and some don't. I am not sure which language she is singing in (sorry!), but her nasality sounds to me more like the way to pronounce those words as opposed to the sound of her instrument. I hope this makes sense.....
    About different ways to express things and communicate with other people: this is so important to realise how imperfect communication with words is! There is so much more to communication! And this is why we understand some people better than others I think. Because we click on what they mean better than with other people. A bit like tuning on a similar frequency to hear to the same radio station.

      @bruresende 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's exactly my thought about the nasality... Asiatic languages are far more nasal than we are used to, and it's absolutely beautiful as is... She's singing and communicating healthily and emotionally while staying in tune with the lyrics, which is also important in the storytelling... And, as always, Sam is amazing in putting all of it in the sweetest yet "teaching" way...

      Native Mandarin speaker here (which is the language she's singing in). The nasality that's pointed out in the video has nothing to do with the language itself. Mandarin doesn't sound nasal when normally spoken, except for consonants that require nasality, like n or ng.

    • @shacklebolt013456
      @shacklebolt013456 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the parts where nasality was point out, the words are pronounced with n at the end. So it's mostly the pronunciation of the language.

    Finally there is someone comment this great song.

  • @DoraSometimes
    @DoraSometimes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just observing- I'm the first one!! 👏
    And now- off to the video!😉
    .
    .
    .
    So, after watching, let me properly comment.
    I have finished primary music school and I've always wanted to follow my parents path(in my country, we have educational system looking like this: primary music school lasts 6yrs and high school 4yrs...and both of them, my mum and my dad, aside their normal high schools, finished all 10yrs) and in my high school, I wanted to study solo singing (I know it's probably called differently in The States 🤷🏻‍♀️), but something called puberty was "hitting me hard" and I had to be a rebel w/o a cause....so I fkd it up. Woo-hoo, bravo young stupid me!!! 🤦🏻‍♀️
    So watching your videos, Sam, helps me in so many ways- firstly, realising that it's bloody hard to learn it properly, secondly helping me to understand that it can be learnt when you're older (though much harder 😭) and thirdly- you're such a genuinely amazing person, with so much passion for all you do...and that, in a way, satisfies my unfulfilled dreams. Just watching you do you.
    Thank you for being so sweet and bursting with aforementioned passion. Your knowledge and ability to pass it and make anyone fall in love with music and singing are such a rare and beautiful qualities.
    Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
    Love from Croatia 💙

    If I wasn't already a subscriber, the fact that you even know who Sandy Lam (or Lin Yilian) is would make me subscribe. Listen to the Peony Pavilion album of hers to treat your ears. I could listen to her all day, whether it's on Cantonese or Mandarin. All good! Definitely feel free to listen to her back 20 years ago - she was an immense star.

    You cracked me up several times in the first minute and I really needed that today. Thanks for bringing both the entertainment and the knowledge again. Side note, I’ve been on a mic review binge recently, is that a U87 you have? Also what like of the HD600 series are the headphones you aren’t currently wearing? Lol

    I think it helps to appreciate the song and the singing better if you understood the lyrics. It's a metaphor about the state of the environment and how there is still a glimmer of hope if we do something about it. The album version is definitely way better than this live performance.

    I've requested a few times that you cover some classic singers and performances. I know you did James Brown, Mariah Carey, Queen and Dolly Parton before but I'd like to see some other classic singers. From like the 60s, 70s and 80s. I don't know if that's a copyright concern or maybe just a lack of interest? I just think it would be interesting to hear about some of the techniques the old greats of the past used vs today's music techniques and styles. Like that classic Righteous Brothers performance or some more African American singers like Tina Turner or Aretha Franklin.
