I love that quote "Art is never finished, it's abandoned". I read it somewhere years ago and it's changed the way I approach my art (painting) for the better.

Hoax is sadly one of the most underrated songs in her carrier. I'm glad that you loved it

this exactly! from the visceral feelings of being down and exhausted in the verses and chorus to the fight in the bridge- hoax is *such* a great song. makes me emotional every time i hear it.

I don’t know if you notice but this is not the last song. there’s one song left from this long pond session called "the lakes". It’s from the deluxe edition. Which is why Taylor said Hoax is the last song. You noticed it when she said that, so I just want to let you know just in case you thought you finish this series already..

remember when folklore first dropped and we were petrified that taylor and joe broke up. cause her last songs usually depict a bookend to a period of her life and the lessons she learned. the collective sigh of relief when the lakes lyrics got leaked whew

@@rankezis I personally was positive that they were ok because of invisible string. but without that song and the lakes I’d be worried too. And I’m so glad we got her explanation about hoax. It was very confusing at first lol

to me, when she says your faithless love, shade of Blue, no other sadness in The world would do, she is talking about being in a relationship with someone with depression, she chooses to be with this person who feels at times blue, sad and faithless, because she loves them

  • @wgrodrig5651

Part of Hoax is also about her record label, losing her masters and the betrayal she felt from her old manager who knew how much the masters meant to her and still went and sold them without giving her an option to buy them outright. Offering to give her one for every new one she put out would’ve guaranteed she never got her masters back and she would’ve been beholden to that man and his greed.
Great analysis, as always. Have a great day!

Also her best friend who chose the side of those who betrayed her in the business deal over her. "You knew it still hurts underneath my scars from where they pulled me apart, but what you did was just as dark. Darling this was just as hard, as when they pulled me apart"

When you mention love being a competition for some, it reminded me of Taylor's own lyric from her song, White Horse: "My mistake, I didn't know to be in love you have to fight to have the upper hand." I've noticed sometimes that you make certain comments where you unknowingly refer to these lyric call backs from Taylor, from songs you haven't even heard yet. As always, love your videos!

I always look forward to your videos about Taylor. I hope you listen to the studio version of this album too and maybe give us your overall thoughts on folklore. Also, I would love if you'd listen to evermore album song by song, I find it even better than folklore though they share the same feel. Have a lovely weekend!

23:00 I don’t think in this part of the song she’s talking about romantic relationships, but about someone who was really close to her, knew her so much but used this information against her (karlie kloss maybe, but could be anyone)
She said in the beginning that in this song she’s talking about multiple people, so this part may not be about love

I also love this performance. She sings this one with this kind of unbridled grief, like she couldn't hide the pain in this one it if she tried. And the lyrics are devastating, but purposefully opaque. She is very direct in some of her songs, but so cryptic in this one. The verses are a long list of metaphors describing what this person symbolizes, without ever speaking directly about the person. And there's some mysterious event as well: "this has frozen my ground", "this was just as hard as when they pulled me apart", with no mention or indication of what *this* would be, specifically. The alliteration on the bridge is crazy too. She's a beautiful writer. It's like this poetic epitaph to something, and she never quite tells you what.
Agree that the "hero who died" is her, btw (which connects with My Tears Ricochet in interesting ways, since she is, to some extent, imagining her own funeral in that one). I'd also say that the imagery in "stood on the cliffside screaming give me a reason" probably ties in with "pulled my car off the road to the lookout, could've followed my fears all the way down", on This is Me Trying, and "pacing the rocks, staring out at the midnight sea", on The Last Great American Dynasty. She's big on lyrical/thematic connections between songs, and the lyric video for Hoax shows a rocky ocean seen from above, so. Heavy imagery to me. All of these connections come to a head on the first line of the next (and last) song of the album: "all my elegies eulogize me". Looking forward to your reaction to that one!
Thanks for posting, Andrew! Lovely, insightful commentary as always.

Loved the song in the beginning! Great reaction as always.
Since you're almost done with folklore I wanted to recommend some of Taylor's performances for future reactions:
Lover at BBC Live Lounge (all the performances from that day are excellent imo but she only plays guitar in this one)
Call It What You Want at SNL
Delicate at Amazon Pride (or any other acoustic)
Dancing with Our Hands Tied from her reputation tour
+anything from Live On the Seine/VH1 Storytellers/RED acoustic sessions from the RED Era
Also would love to see more Olivia Rodrigo reactions.

It makes me think of what it feels like to be in love with someone that struggles with depression. You love them, but there are times that your love just isn’t enough. It is really hard.

  • @B0KN0WS
    @B0KN0WS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Great reaction Andy, thank you! I know most people don't agree with me, but I always wonder if this song has anything to do with some rough time she went through with Joe ( she uses blue a lot to reference him, like in the song Peace where she talks about his ocean blue waves, maybe he suffers from depression? Also, they spent a lot of time together in New York when they first were falling in love, which she possibly references in the song when she talks about leaving a part of herself back in New York)) like maybe he did something to hurt her and they worked through it. As we all know, love isn't perfect or easy and people make mistakes and sometimes hurt or betray each other. And sometimes there can be forgiveness and healing and a path to move forward with that person in spite of what they have done. But that is part of the magic of songwriting, that it's open to interpretation. I can't wait to see what you think of Evermore! Take care

I relate to this song deeply (in kinda a pathetic way but anyways). To me is like you know the relationship is damaging you for whatever reason, you have suffered a lot but you love that person so much that you really still prefer that damaged relationship than the pain of being without them. "No other sadness in the world would do": if I have to choose between the sadness of not having them or the sadness of the disfunctional relationship... you know

The studio version of hoax has an amazing violin come every once in a while that makes you feel it to your bones, you should give it a try. The part in which she incorporates the guitar, in the studio version at least, it sounds like a sad but angry strumming and it matches the lyrics she's singing over it which are heartbreaking and have a bit of an angry undertone to them. Hoax is a perfectly and terribly sad song

I would love to see a video or at the end of one of the next songs not necessarily ranking her songs but just discussing on the album; which were your favorites and wjich you didn't care for ( hopefully no 1 hates on you for those lol)
Also if you have listened to any of the original album off camera, I would love to hear your opinion on that versus this acoustic version. I prefer the recorded version of this song because for the chorus she does a beautifully delicate falsetto
