oh, and they wrote this when she went to Aaron's studio in September to film the Long Pond Sessions and finished a couple weeks after filming; she is very very very fast when she is inspired to write. 4 months start to release for folklore; 3 months to Evermore. She is crazy good. Where she found time to direct the videos is anyone's guess. Another song (Renegade) was released on Big Red Machine's album How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last? It could've just as easily been on Evermore, it is their sort of sound.
The string is a plot point from the song "invisible string". The magic string (fate) had them tethered all along. Also, she explained this is about the planning and effort that goes into making someone like you. When you first meet someone... you try to make them like you and want you. It's like a game....
I think the boy disappearing at the beginning was a metaphor. Taylor once wrote a poetry 'Why She Disappeared' for her 'Reputation' album which had the following lines: "She dreamed of time machines and revenge and a love that was really something" and at the end the lyrics go like "Standing broad-shouldered next to her was a love that was really something" The lyric in Willow about the man being a 'mythical thing' also points out that she always had an idea about love and that came to life when she met the man.
I'm happy that you're starting with Evermore. :) The music video for Cardigan ends where the video for Willow starts. They are connected and it's fun to watch them together. In the video for Willow are representations for some of the songs on Folklore. Like the golden string for Invisible String or the tent for Seven. There is one for Exile as well but I can't remember what it was. Her videos are always so thoughtful. The Grammy performance is a medley between Cardigan, August and Willow. That's why Willow starts with the bridge. The full performance is on her TH-cam channel. :) I'm most exited for Tis the damn season and Evermore. Especially Evermore because it became one of my favorite songs from her. I think it depends on your mod if your more into Folklore or Evermore. Both are great albums. I personally clicked more with Evermore. I hope you'll watch the lyric videos on her TH-cam channel for the other songs. You have the lyrics and are very pretty. :)
Ohhhh Rhiannon is a cool comparison! I totally can hear what you’re talking about. I wouldn’t be surprised at all of Taylor and/or Aaron (since he composed the instrumental that she wrote the lyric for) were inspired by that sound/style. Plus she has a lot of witchy vibes attached to this song (which we all know is Stevie’s whole aesthetic), with that scene in the video and all of the remixes of this song have “witch” in the title.
Yes!!!!! That makes so much sense. I didn’t hear it clearly til he pointed it out. But the overall witchy vibes of the song (and the video) was definitely giving Stevie for me. ❤
You’re very right about the spooky vibe, I think she said she wanted it to be witchy and like someone over a cauldron making a love potion or something haha. I’m not sure if there was an actual racial element to the plot of the music video, I think it was mainly an Invisible String reference with some metaphors for the isolation of fame thrown in there.
You ought to watch the Cardigan video; the opening scene of this picks up where that left off. There is a magic / fairytale element to both videos. Gold magic rope = invisible string from folklore. "They count me out time and time again" -- "come back stronger". Think of the Twitter/social media cancel culture attack from her documentary. In Red (song from 2012) she equates emotions to colors: red = passion/love/anger, blue = sadness, grey = depression. On the reputation, lover and folklore albums, though true love is always golden. The last song on Lover is Daylight; there she equates her current love to the end of 20 years of dark night. (In the Cardigan video (and this one) she starts in her nightgown getting ready for bed -- so something of a dream sequence ?).
The "Wait for the signal" verse is about how they hid their relationship so they could just focus on each other. She met Joe while in a bad relationship (Calvin Harris) & used another guy (Tom Hiddleston) to get out of that bad relationship, knowing the rebound relationship wouldn't last either, all while being intimidated to actually let Joe know she was interested because of her "bad Reputation" thus the "bait & switch" because he just sort of waited her out until she finally started showing her interest in him. I think for her Joe was a port in the storm, created a magical, secret & safe place for her & she now knows that no matter what craziness her public life throws at her, his love & support allows her to love freely because he accepts all of her. At least that's my take but she writes it much more beautifully then that & your take on it is fantastic! Also, PLEASE do the lyric video for No Body, No Crime & Tolerate it! Both are pure storytelling songs not about Taylor & absolutely genius!
Okay I'm going to sound a bit insane so stick with me. Taylor's albums are like eras/epochs in her life (this is relevant I promise). The themes of this specific song is a callback to her album reputation. She treats every album as if it's a completely immersive world and she creates a vibe/story arc/emotional theme/aesthetic for all of them. Folklore was kind of a reflective foray into folk that focused more on a cohesive thread of storytelling. Evermore is like the closure of the stories that were being told in reputation and folklore. This song is another retelling of the story that is repeated all throughout reputation. One about discovering the shock of love in the midst of the worst personal chaos you've ever esperienced. This is reiterated in most of reputation, it's the same story told through the lense of time, space and reflection and the only difference we see in the story this time is the acknowledgement of that golden string of fate which is a callback to invisible string and also a callback to her referencing this in Lover (the album) as gold ( this metaphor is all throughout reputation/lover and folklore) which is a direct comparison to the kind of love that she mentions in the album Red which is described in the song Red. This dichotomy is further explored in the song Daylight on the album Lover where she says "I once believed love would be burning red but it's golden, like daylight.". All this to say that Taylor Swift songs are like chapters in the book of her albums. but as a whole they're a series of books where you can read them as standalones but you'll only comprehend the full scope of them once you read the series in chronological order.
I’ve always felt the same way about Taylor’s albums too; how they read like chapters in a story that just continues to unfold. Each is magical in itself, but together they take you through such an immersive and fulfilling journey.
I also love the vibe of Willow because it feels like a scene out of Shakespeare. Plus, lots of repeating metaphors and themes that tie into Folklore and her other albums. I'm most excited for you to get to Ivy and Cowboy like me. And I would have never hear the similarities between Rhiannon, but I can totally hear the influence and inspo now.
I interpret the song a little bit differently in places. I think it talks about a love that you find when you least expect it. Like she had a plan for how the next couple of years were supposed to go and suddenly she finds this great love and all her plans change, because now they merge their lives and have to account for each other with their plans. That's why the "wreck my plans" is so joyful. Finding an unexpected love is the best reason to change your plans.
9:41 I think she means that he comes to her mind when she goes to sleep. You know, how the conscience wanders to thoughts you may be representing through the day (or through life 😅), he's the last thing her brain willingly thinks about before losing consciousness. Yeah, that happens when your falling for someone.
Thank you for the Fleetwood Mac reference. That’s awesome. It’s about how he sneaked into her heart, she thought life was going to go one way and he came along and gave her exactly what she secretly wanted, but which conflicted with what she had told herself she could get.
14:34 😂 this music video being filmed during a pandemic may have had something to do with them deciding against that. Such a great reaction as always! I’m excited to see your reaction to the rest of the album
I’ve heard a lot of people say (and I kinda agree) that folklore is a more solid album but evermore has the best songs. Then others feel the opposite so who knows 😂
When I first heard evermore my first thought was that it's not even close to as good as folklore. But at this point it's grown on me so much that I might even like it more than folklore.
For sure, Folklore is a whole story and journey with intro to conclusion. Evermore is the rough draft where you went for it.... and it's amazing... just not the same "story" as Folklore. That doesn't make sense but yeah haha
Watching this while making my breakfast! Don't mind me dancing around my kitchen from excitement! I've been waiting for this!!! Can't wait for you to go through the rest of this masterpiece!!!!
Is it wrong that Im more excited for the evermore vids than I was for your folklore ones hahaa, I looved the commentary as always. Also very unrelated but would you mind sharing your MBTI personality type with us? Just a nosey psych major here.
witches -- watch her 2018 AMA performance of "I Did Something Bad." The magic scene here struck me as the modern equivalent of Love Potion Number Nine (yeah, I'm that old! lol) And, she is a big fan of Sophie Turner (and Game of Thrones in general). Sort of funny that Sophie married Joe Jonas; the line of sending baby presents to her exes came from the couple's first child (now they are working on number two).
the sneaking in part I interpret as follows: something sneaky is something quiet, reluctlant and without many notice (but not without it, I believe) it was very easy for him and her that he entered her life and a place in her mind/heart, as the "cut through like a knife part" let us know, but also it wasn't like blatantly established, he slowly sneaked into her life in a flow-y way. I think she uses "sneak" in a more positive sense, kind of removing the "reluctant" part of it, and stating that she felt it, so it wasn't completely without notice, almost like saying yeah I know what you are doing and I like it.
I interpret rough on the surface as hard to dismantle, like someone who is very cautious because of previous experiences, but also, at the same time I see that as someone who is perceived as rough. I feel like that sentence plays into those two ideas, one that says she actually was very protective of herself or the second one that says it was just an impression and she actually wasn't like that. Both of those meanings are wonderful for the song and just set the tone of the beggining of that relationship and the fact that it was not really difficult to let that man enter her life at all (cut through like a knife).
I interpret "wait for the signal and I'll meet you after dark" as her saying, yeah I'm all in, I'm prepared for this, I want you, which could have two meanings, either when they began the relationship or when the relationship started to get more and more serious or commited (which makes sense pairing it with the "tha's my man" lyric, that is basically saying *you're the one/you're my forever*). The following lyric is "show me the places where the others gave you scars" I interpret this way: they're getting vulnerable with each other, she wants to heal him, help him, understand him even more, contuinue to discover him and his past.
This may be a stretch but the ending could be a reference to one of her songs from Lover called Daylight. The line goes "we step into the daylight and let it go".
i think this song speaks to the vulnerability that comes with being in love. as someone who was "rough on the surface" too (lol) theres something so beautiful about relenting to someone else and being guided by them. the complete trust that comes with that. love her songwriting!
I don’t know if you’ll see this but…the sneaking in to me references the same story line as Cruel Summer and Daylight, I love that about her, she spins story lines between different albums and songs. 😊
Thank you for the Taylor content. Her cardigan MV is absolutely gorgeous, you will have to make sure you keep your eyes on the MV since there are a few changes in the scenery.
I used to think that this song was about a love story but recently I am hearing it from a different perspective. It feels like he is stringing her along, leading her on, playing mind games with her (the more you say less I know) and she can sense it on a subconscious level but she is allowing it to happen
I like the 'they count me out time and time again/stronger than a 90s trend' lines interspersed with 'life was a willow', because it's as if she is doing her usual things, but the presence and influence of the other person is there are interrupting her usual patterns
I don't know if the song itself has to do with ethnicity, but I definitely agree that the video hints at the idea that there is something forbidden/secret/impossible about the love she's singing about. That "train" line drives me crazy, though. She keeps using train imagery and I'm not sure what exactly I make of it.
Her making out with the guy would be weird, he was one of her dancers I believe from her Red Tour. Plus she is with Joe, so no the making out. I don't think it has anything about race. She also used one of her other dancers in her Lover MV and he is a man of color.
Would be interested to see your reaction to the music video for I Bet You Think About Me (another of the bonus songs from Red, originally written at the time that album was made & definitely still Jake). I like the song and although the song was written when she was hurt & angry the perspective time gives resulted in one of her best and funniest videos. She’s enjoying playing with her younger self’s dark karmic thoughts for the “guy” who hurt her.
hey i love your taylor reactions!! you should definitely listen to dear john from the album speak now. the song is about john mayer and she uses his guitar style for that song and the lyrics are incredible :)
I see this as the singer falling under a spell, or becoming enchanted by the man she sings about. Those times when you suddenly develop an all encompassing crush & your entire world almost pivots to be about this other person.
The lyrics of this song roughly follow when Taylor meet and started see Joe (her current man) she wasn’t looking for a relationship but couldn’t get him out of her mind. This is also the Tim she was dealing with all the drama arod Kanye,Kim, that’s the count me out time and time again lyrics. The string is like the invisible string song tie in.
i've never get the spooky vibes from the song, but obviously of course i get that from the video. I was very interesting to me that she decided to make the video like that, given that (in my opinion) the sound of the song is not, so it was weird and interesting that you did feel the music that way. the thing i do agree with is the haunting guitar, but the melody of the chorus is very poppy (in a great way) to me. :D I do get the mythical, mystical, fairy tale-y vibes from the music (and of course the video).
What is pretty funny about the Grammy performance that year was how all the other acts were so in-your-face skin shows guaranteed to turn off 99% of anyone over 50. So Taylor and team come out looking like grandparents. Literally! It was hilarious.
I'm surprised Willow got more positive reaction from you than some songs on folklore. Really hope you listen to the recorded version of folklore (not for reaction videos). Willow is on my bottom 5 evermore songs. So I hope you find some songs you like on this album.
The reason she doesn’t kiss the actor at the end is because she hasn’t kissed any co stars since getting into a relationship with Joe alwyn. So any music videos from the last six years have zero kissing.
oh, and they wrote this when she went to Aaron's studio in September to film the Long Pond Sessions and finished a couple weeks after filming; she is very very very fast when she is inspired to write. 4 months start to release for folklore; 3 months to Evermore. oooh loved the Fleetwood Mac comparison as Taylor is a huge fan!
9:41 I think she means that he comes to her mind when she goes to sleep. You know, how the conscience wanders to thoughts you may be representing through the day (or through life 😅), he's the last thing her brain willingly thinks about before losing consciousness. Yeah, that happens when your falling for someone.
the way you played the melody on guitar was beautiful!
JUST noticed that in the video, she’s performing in a case that’s open then shut...now this is an open-shut case!!
Thank you for the Fleetwood Mac reference. That’s awesome.
It’s about how he sneaked into her heart, she thought life was going to go one way and he came along and gave her exactly what she secretly wanted, but which conflicted with what she had told herself she could get.
"I enjoy a good makeout" hahahahahaha 😂
Love your comment about the spooky magic feel. She said she wanted it to feel like a love spell ❤️
you're finally starting the evermore journey! so looking forward to this!
I still can't believe she gave us Evermore. The album is very special and ohhh so poetic... Great reaction!
Also, I can't wait for you to listen to - Tis the damn season and Coney Island and Cowboy Like me and oh God, every song in Evermore!!!!!!!
14:34 😂 this music video being filmed during a pandemic may have had something to do with them deciding against that. Such a great reaction as always! I’m excited to see your reaction to the rest of the album

When I first heard evermore my first thought was that it's not even close to as good as folklore. But at this point it's grown on me so much that I might even like it more than folklore.
Folklore is forever my favorite.
I love folklore, but i prefer evermore and come back to it as whole more often than I do folklore
For sure, Folklore is a whole story and journey with intro to conclusion. Evermore is the rough draft where you went for it.... and it's amazing... just not the same "story" as Folklore. That doesn't make sense but yeah haha
Yay Evermore!! Thanks Andy ❤ I always love your perspective on TS's songs, great commentary. I also loved your comparison to Rhiannon, that was cool.
Watching this while making my breakfast! Don't mind me dancing around my kitchen from excitement! I've been waiting for this!!! Can't wait for you to go through the rest of this masterpiece!!!!
P.S. this video is a continuation of the cardigan music video!
Is it wrong that Im more excited for the evermore vids than I was for your folklore ones hahaa, I looved the commentary as always. Also very unrelated but would you mind sharing your MBTI personality type with us? Just a nosey psych major here.
Love your reacts 😍 good Luck with the track five bestie 😭
You described the vibe of the song so well! I've never been able to quite put it into words
Happy beginning of evermore's emotional ride!!!
P.S.: thank you for taking the time of creating a different intro card design for each video!
I’ve been waiting for this, so excited
I’m so excited for you to cover Evermore! “Ivy” and “cowboy like me” are some of my favs, and I really think you will dig them
Ah cant wait you to react to champagne problem 🪐🪐🪐
Also, you should check out Renegade, Aaron and Taylor's separate project
This music video is actually a sequel to the video for cardigan! Maybe you could react to that too? Or just watch it in your own time haha
witches -- watch her 2018 AMA performance of "I Did Something Bad." The magic scene here struck me as the modern equivalent of Love Potion Number Nine (yeah, I'm that old! lol) And, she is a big fan of Sophie Turner (and Game of Thrones in general). Sort of funny that Sophie married Joe Jonas; the line of sending baby presents to her exes came from the couple's first child (now they are working on number two).
Evermore is my favourite album along with Speak Now! Can't wait for all your reactions to Evermore! A very great start, Andrew!!!!!!
Man, I really enjoyed the Folklore long pond session and was waiting for the Evermore journey to begin. Looking forward to it. Cheers!
The live video is from a melody she did for te Grammys good video you could react to. It’s cardigan, august, and willow
the sneaking in part I interpret as follows: something sneaky is something quiet, reluctlant and without many notice (but not without it, I believe)
it was very easy for him and her that he entered her life and a place in her mind/heart, as the "cut through like a knife part" let us know, but also it wasn't like blatantly established, he slowly sneaked into her life in a flow-y way.
I love how happy you looked while watching the live version!
It's fun that you're hearing the studio tracks. Long pond is lovely, but the studio tracks have so much personality.
so excieted for your reaction to this album! my favorite from the two sisters, i think you'll prefer it to folklore too
This may be a stretch but the ending could be a reference to one of her songs from Lover called Daylight. The line goes "we step into the daylight and let it go".
I'm really excited to hear what you think of the next songs, they are a few of her best 😊
i love the guitar on this song
i think this song speaks to the vulnerability that comes with being in love. as someone who was "rough on the surface" too (lol) theres something so beautiful about relenting to someone else and being guided by them. the complete trust that comes with that. love her songwriting!
I’m ecstatic to see where this evermore journey will take you! It’s personally one of my favorite Taylor albums!
She keeps using train imagery and I'm not sure what exactly I make of it.
watching your videos really inspire me to play guitar! thank you so, much for this!
That's awesome!
Thank you! Another great reaction/analysis, can hardly wait for the rest
Yay! Evermore songs are the best 🧡🤎
Her making out with the guy would be weird, he was one of her dancers I believe from her Red Tour. Plus she is with Joe, so no the making out. I don't think it has anything about race. She also used one of her other dancers in her Lover MV and he is a man of color.
"ok we're on a sweater" and the cardigan under someone's bed took it personally 🤣
EVERMORE IS TAYLOR'S BEST ALBUM. YOURE GONNA LOVE IT 😌💕
Yess
close, folklore is lmao
@@S0LAVELLANHELL nope
Would be interested to see your reaction to the music video for I Bet You Think About Me (another of the bonus songs from Red, originally written at the time that album was made & definitely still Jake). I like the song and although the song was written when she was hurt & angry the perspective time gives resulted in one of her best and funniest videos. She’s enjoying playing with her younger self’s dark karmic thoughts for the “guy” who hurt her.
Great video, love the reactions andrew👍👍
hey i love your taylor reactions!! you should definitely listen to dear john from the album speak now. the song is about john mayer and she uses his guitar style for that song and the lyrics are incredible :)
that intro was amazing Andrew ⚡
I see this as the singer falling under a spell, or becoming enchanted by the man she sings about. Those times when you suddenly develop an all encompassing crush & your entire world almost pivots to be about this other person.
This was filmed during covid so it’s possible there may have been a kiss if not. :)
I'm the 6th like and the second comment. I feel awesome, never been so proud in my life 😂 Sending love from Uruguay ♥️🇺🇾
Wait, have you not watched the Cardigan vid?
"head on a pillow, i could feel you sneaking in" i think shes saying that he sneaks into her dreams at night
i've never get the spooky vibes from the song, but obviously of course i get that from the video. I was very interesting to me that she decided to make the video like that, given that (in my opinion) the sound of the song is not, so it was weird and interesting that you did feel the music that way. the thing i do agree with is the haunting guitar, but the melody of the chorus is very poppy (in a great way) to me. :D I do get the mythical, mystical, fairy tale-y vibes from the music (and of course the video).
let's go 🤞🏼🥰
Sounds like you could have been a fan of Candlebox “Far Behind”
Amazin!
I like folklore move overall as an album but I thing evermore has better songs therefor it is my favorite☺️
(Folklore as in sonically cohesive)
She’s so hot lol
