The Wii U eShop carries some of my most cherished gaming memories. Since I wasn't following the Wii releases at the time and just played what my parent got me (I was in Kindergarten), the Wii U was where I first experienced the Wii's finest, like the ports of the Metroid Prime games, Prime 1 becoming my favourite Metroid game, Skyward Sword, which I ended up adoring, and Rhythm Haven, a total comfort game for someone like me. It was where I first played Shovel Knight and the Steamworld games, which kickstarted my love of Indie titles. It was also where I discovered gems on the GBA, SNES, and N64 such as Mario Vs Donkey Kong, Super Mario World which was the first time I played it, and Paper Mario 64, which became one of my favourite Mario experiences ever. Not to mention that it was where I first downloaded Breath of the Wild, DK Tropical Freeze, Windwaker HD, and so much more. Even just browsing the shop with no intention of buying things and the calming music plays in the background was such a fun experience for me. While the 3DS eShop may have had more to it in terms of original smaller Nintendo titles, the Wii U was truly where it began for me and will always be my most fondly remembered Nintendo console right up there with the Wii, and I will always hold in in high regard. Farewell, Wii U eShop!
Same for me! Except i played on 3ds and wii u equally pretty much, i was also in 2nd - 5th grade when i had these consoles while they were in their prime
I remember when I got my 3DSXL for my birthday in 2012, and one of my favorite things to do was simply to browse the eShop just to see what they had. I didn't have any money, but it was still fun just to look.
Managed to snag shin megami tensei 4 and devil survivor 2 record breaker as some final purchases a few hours before closure. It feels surreal to finally see these shops close down. Alongside the game preservation problem, they also just had a lot more character and charm than the switch eshop.
Did the exact same thing man, all the SMT games available actually, shin megami tensei 4 apocalypse, strange journey, devil survivor overclocked and soul hackers as well. Great minds think alike. They're impossible to find online and tensei 4 only exists in digital. A crazy deal. I remember I was interested in buying those games back in the day when Nintendo announced it and then I forgot. I never tested any SMT game but it seems to be a series I will enjoy. Thankfully Shin Megami Tensei 5 came out quite recently so I thought about it again. Also agree these e shops were far better than the one on the Switch, with cool music and all.
You can still look at your wishlist. You can click on the search magnifying glass and then look at the whole shop. I like to still look at the screenshots. For each game and think to myself hmmmmm. I wonder.
Thank you for this final goodbye 😢 Also just saw that Nintendo decided to give away 2 3ds themes as a gift in the theme shop which you can still download(in North America at least) I also checked out the Nintendo badge arcade and I found out that in the practice mode you have a chance to win some free plays once a day. So badges are still obtainable!
Yeah but to be honest since there’s no rotation Badge Arcade is essentially dead now. All you can get (if you even get lucky with practice catcher plays) is the badges that are still left in there. At least I’ve been playing it pretty much everyday from the announcement until the closure so I do have nearly 3000 badges but I feel bad for others who had no idea about it.
@@spiceycacao2303 yea no rotation means there’s an end point. Luckily there are a lot of them there for someone like me who started playing it recently. It’ll take forever to get them all this way to but I’m just happy there is a way to keep playing.
After a bunch of final day purchases, I very luckily and by chance had just enough to get the two Etrian Odyssey games that weren't on sale... and then I couldn't get through to add any final funds, so unfortunately I missed out on the DLC. Still... a fitting finale to my 3DS games collection - had I got an extra game beforehand, I'd have had to have missed out on one of those games.
@@senseypuffle Just started it. Enjoying it very much. The series got better with each installment. The battle system in 3 is much approved and more strategic.
I’m not sure that’s the case. If they truly didn’t care, they would’ve shut it down much earlier. Considering how low the Wii U and 3DS sold, on top of the fact that many people preferred to pirate the games over actually buying them, it didn’t make much sense for Nintendo to continue using resources to keep the eShop open.
Got myself Pocket Card Jockey, Harmo Knight, Ace Attorney 4-6, Boxboy series and Pullblox before the 3DS eShop closed, and with the Wii U I purchased Zak and Wiki and Kirby's Adventure Wii. Didn't get Rhythm Thief, but I do have the demo downloaded. Kinda sad to see them go now, even if I didn't use the 3DS too much in it's hayday
I just can’t understand why they chose to sterilized the ui experience on switch. All of my last minute shopping on the eshop really hammered it home for me. The shop themes and different menu music, the mii plaza, all the little touches and delightful character was what made Nintendo during the ds/wii generation. I could understand having an option to turn off sound effects or menu music, or all unnecessary animations in order to appeal to a more “hard core” gamer audience to sell more units, (also accessibility options are always welcome) but what they gave us feels so lifeless. I will absolutely wait a few more seconds for something to load, or an action to complete if it’s delightful and makes the experience more fun. There’s a reason people continue to remix the Wii shop and mii maker themes after all, these things become iconic. After first booting up the switch I still remember being flabbergasted when I realized the Breath of the Wild main menu was basically silent… after the silence of the console main menu. Felt almost offensive to my Nintendo fan heart.
It’s especially insane because games like Animal Crossing are built on the foundation of “it’s charming but/so the UI has to always take a little too long and feel laggy”.
Poor eShop you had a good life even if it may have been cut short. I was both on their last night and this morning just looking around at stuff I have bought in the past. Just remembering the past and stuff.
I was just expecting to get a communication error after the shops shut down. Just seeing it be a graveyard of everything on those systems is odd. At least the updates survived.
They still allow redownloads though. Why would it cause an error message? Plus, it also still allows for software updates for games. Granted, you’ll need the physical copy of the game now since the digital version is gone.
Kid Tripp being in the charts just showed how many people were going through the eShop in these last hours... it was made free shortly before the eShop died
Like 10 years ago I would watch the skyward sword trailers on the 3ds eShop over and over because I wanted the game on Wii SO BAD... I'll miss the whole vibe of this eshop and the little shopping bag guy and the screen dropping the little blocks in to the game to fill it up when you are downloading 🥺
Could that download screen get annoying on a large game you were so excited for you just couldn’t take your eye off it and had to play the second it was available? Sure. But did I watch it in full for every smaller download and enjoy it? Absolutely. Epitome of finding joy in the little things when those little bit-baubles came in from both sides instead of just left or right. 😚👌
I wasnt a day one but I got one that Christmas- the n64 remakes and Mario kart. I didn't like how it didn't have homebrew. Sold it spring 2012..... And then bought back in spring 2016.....that was my forree back into video gaming. So great
I'm gonna miss the 3DS and Wii U eShops. My SD Card snapped a few days ago and I needed to recover a backup from Christmas 2019 (basically 3 years and 3 months of save data lost). I had to get an emergency Class 4 8GB SD Card that I already had and restore the backup. With that, I lost a whole library of demos and the only demos I got in time were Kid Tripp, Miitopia (the most important one for me tbh. Ran out of tries before the backup was made so it's all good in here) and Sonic Lost World. Good thing stuff like hShop exists, that way, while not legitimately getting demoes and originally free content, you still get them.
Damn, why didn't Atlus give the US $5 sales on the SMT, and Etrian Odyssey games. I would've bought all of them on the last day if we had those prices.
It was wild, I am sitting in Japan and was awake until the closure at 9 am or rather 8:58. Nintendo was a little early. ;) Spent about 2.000 bucks this month on 3DS and Wii U software (and some Wii games) and was researching until the end yesterday as well as playing games to get access to buy their DLC. Never would have imagined that I’d do such an insane thing but well, it was the end of an era and while today I’m exhausted I’m at peace while also being a little sad. As for Atlus, they had these cheap sales several times every year for the last couple of years now. No discount in all the DLC though and that’s where all the money is. ;) Atlus had a final sale planned for Japan as well but canceled it out of the blue much to japanese gamers’ dismay.
@@Lock2002ful homebrew as in hacking your 3ds and load stolen games onto it, yeah, it's not like the actual developers still get money for it (in like the bigger companies, i did purchase a few indie titles before the closure)
@@Lock2002ful I also purchased a lot of WII U and 3DS games since the closure of the e-shop was annouced, I'm still buying digital exclusives and dlcs for xbox360, PS3 and Vita, would do the same thing for WII U and 3ds if Nintendo allow me to do it. But because Nintendo does not allow me anymore i'm homebrew my consoloes and enjoy those games that i did not get. If you can not purchase anymore there is no way to the developer get money from it, so there is no difference for them.
@@Kiirabu197 Yeah, that’s not what homebrew means. Just as I thought. So first, “bro”, everyone and their mother knows that “homebrew” or rather hacking/modding your system and playing roms on it is a thing. There’s no need to tell that to anyone. Second, I don’t pirate. You can justify it all you want but when companies get money for their products it is more likely that they’ll keep their employees, perhaps pay them even more or hire more and in the case of games keep producing the games we love that are being sold. Don’t try to justify piracy. It is the same as stealing. If you cannot afford a household appliance you cannot just go into the store and take one for free or steal one without consequences. There’s obviously a difference between physical and digital goods but especially during sales when games basically cost nothing like Atlus’ games for 3-4 bucks a pop, there’s really no reason to steal unless you’re so poor and miserable that you can’t live on without. I have a family, I have a nice job and we have our Nintendo accounts linked to our devices and play together. I wouldn’t want to mod those systems or get another system to mod it just to cheap out. There’s simply no reason for me to mod anything to get stuff for free that other people have worked for creating. I do of course like Homebrew, the correct meaning, as in actual new apps and games or mods to existing games from the community. Once Nintendo pulls the plug on all servers and cuts official re-downloads and multiplayer, then I’ll dabble in homebrew as the system will be abandoned by that time like the everything up to the GC and DSi is today. But as long as the system and the online and store support is still active, there is no reason for me to go into modding my system. Just had a guy the other day call me stupid on reddit because I spent so much money when I could get everything “for free” when he was obviously just salty that he couldn’t afford want he wanted, kept on harassing other people who bought games trying to have a good time as well. He as well as you don’t seem to know that nothing is for free. Not to mention it’s illegal and Japan is very strict with copyright infringement and piracy. I’ll rather not be in jail and enjoy the content I like for what it costs. But even if it wasn’t illegal or this strict, if I want to and if I can, I like to support devs for their work or I just buy what I like to buy, period. If you don’t do that, cool, that’s your choice. But don’t presume you can go around and tell people about “homebrew” when you really mean stealing as if piracy was the go to way. Either way, while I don’t agree with you, as a fellow gamer I wish you a very good time with the games you enjoy to play.
It's definitely going to be (albeit not much) sad to see in within the next 5-10 years when Nintendo will be doing this again for the base Switch eShop.
2 days before it closed. I plugged in my fire emblem conquest and downloaded the other 2, I wanted to for so long and literally last chance so I'm glad. Money well spent. I wish I could have got the $47 worth of shadows of valentia dlc, not to mention all the tons of smt/all other rpg dlc. Oh well, I still got all that I could.
Hopped on there last night and made sure to get any games I wanted, fortunately the only games I really wanted were the ace attorney games, cause they dont have a physical, and they were on sale for 3 bucks a piece. May the 3ds shop rest in peace
kudos to the pokemon company for making it actually impossible to download poke transporter without actually paying, assuming you never had bought it before. it was the case for a friend and we waited just to see if they thought of that, and of course they didn't. he downloaded bank beforehand but now he cannot get transporter after its gone free. always one step forward, two steps back. Bank should've been made free from the moment they started charging for HOME. what a scam
Yarr! 🏴☠️ I originally modded my 3DS as a way to unlock region and use some homebrew apps. Legitimally bought everything I could, now some dlcs and digital only will be smuggled, yo-ho-ho! Still hunting some physical copies, though.
I missed a Mario game. I thought I bought them all, and I was so PROUD I got them all. I missed one. Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure. Gone forever. I’ll never ever get the chance to play that game.
Shame on Nintendo for still doing this even after all the backlash, Sony kept theirs open after the backlash but Nintendo didn’t (it’s no longer possible to get Hatsune Mini Project Mirai DX on a UK 3DS, I have nostalgia for that game, it was my first Miku game in 2016, I’ll miss you)

I was so diligent in making sure to update all my games, make sure I had all free dlc etc… then I went to play Runbow with my wife last night and seen there was free DLC for Shantae and Freedom Planet costumes that I missed -_- ahh well.
I was there at the end for my loved Wii U Didn't give the same credit to 3DS store though More games physically available than for Wii U I noticed that Wii U shop games in Germany/Europe didn't recieve much price lowering in their last days which I fi d really a shame as it's line they wanted us to not buy games to be preserved I got as much as many E-Shop games as possible in 2 years when collecting for physical stuff so I'm only sad that I didn't earlier Greetings from Germany
Actually the update thing makes sense because the developer of Fragrant story is making an update that's going to vastly expand the game. So anyone who has Fragrant Story be at the ready. Also I think you can still redownload already owned software for a few months
Kid Trip, Digger Dan DX and Milo likely shot up the charts because their company made the games free to download, to give everyone a chance to play. UK milo got stuck waiting for release so we got the first 2, I think America got 2 as well but ones diff from ours
I ended up running into a very annoying problem on the last day. I had a big deadline on the same day as the eShop closure so had to do quite a bit or purchasing on that last day. However, I was not aware that there was a limit to purchasing/redeeming codes (to add funds) - whether that was using a card, paypal, redeeming codes - it must have been around the 200/250 euros mark but after that it was not possible to buy anything else so matter how I tried! Was highly frustrating and makes no sense for adults accounts; just some more Nintendo stupidity, which we've all gotten used to. The silver lining is that I probably saved quite a bit!
I think there may have been a heavy discount on Brain Training or it was perhaps given away for free at some point, that's why it's so high up on the charts.
Wario Land 4 was on the Wii U?! I bought Wario Land 1 through 3 on the 3DS eShop before it closed... why the hell wasn't that available on the 3DS eShop?! Also I'm bummed I completely forgot to buy the rest of the Mii Plaza games before the eShop got shut down. Now just trying to buy them from the rabbit will cause the Plaza to crash. 😭 Oh, and I wish the DSiware store getting shut down was more publicized. I also forgot to check that out before it went down. I made sure to check out the 3DS and Wii U... but not the DSi!
I'm lucky that all the games that I purchased fit on my current SD-card, because although you can still re-download bought content, that service will also shut down sooner or later

I remember when I got my 3DSXL for my birthday in 2012, and one of my favorite things to do was simply to browse the eShop just to see what they had. I didn't have any money, but it was still fun just to look.
It was great being with you and the rest of the community live while the shop was closing. It gave me a sense of closure. ❤
A sense of closure will come for me when someone makes it really easy for me to pirate 3DS DLC. Like, buy-fan-translated-NES-cartridges-on-Etsy easy.
in regards to Kidd trip, the developers made the game (and digger Dan) free in the uk…which is bloody lovely of them, so that’s why it was so high.
I wonder.
Thank you for this final goodbye 😢
Also just saw that Nintendo decided to give away 2 3ds themes as a gift in the theme shop which you can still download(in North America at least)
I also checked out the Nintendo badge arcade and I found out that in the practice mode you have a chance to win some free plays once a day.
It’ll take forever to get them all this way to but I’m just happy there is a way to keep playing.
badge arcade actually has a few strings of unused text in its code that talk about badge arcade closing, Nintendo won't let us have anything i guess.
That final sentence with lack of outro music... I felt that.
Interestingly in the US, capcom was the number 1 discount seller
Yeah. Pretty much all of their games were sold for $3 each.
My final purchases were Persona Q2 and Yo-Kai Watch 3 as the card versions already were very rare and expensive 😊
I was between Yokai 3 and blasters. But decided yokai 3
@@senseypuffle Just started it. Enjoying it very much. The series got better with each installment. The battle system in 3 is much approved and more strategic.
This is Nintendo’s way of saying “We don’t care!”
*hshop*
I’m not sure that’s the case.
If they truly didn’t care, they would’ve shut it down much earlier.
Considering how low the Wii U and 3DS sold, on top of the fact that many people preferred to pirate the games over actually buying them, it didn’t make much sense for Nintendo to continue using resources to keep the eShop open.
@@Just_normal_youtube_channel🤡🤡🤡
@@Just_normal_youtube_channel I see you watch Scott the Woz as well.
John makes the best videos hands down. Always worth a watch. Thanks!
does anyone remember the 3ds little 3d video service? had a little dino show, use to love watching it growing up.
The fact that several Mario and Zelda games were on sale for you is weird. In NA, nothing Nintendo was on sale at all when I explored the eShop
Missed a few deals, but tried to get as much as I can for games with high physical values. Can’t break the bank getting everything!
I was just expecting to get a communication error after the shops shut down. Just seeing it be a graveyard of everything on those systems is odd. At least the updates survived.
Why would there be an error? They still allow you to redownload
WHAT! THATS A AWSOME GAME!
I remember getting the 3ds day one, man it was terrible at launch, but now its my fav portable console
I wasnt a day one but I got one that Christmas- the n64 remakes and Mario kart.
I didn't like how it didn't have homebrew. Sold it spring 2012.....
And then bought back in spring 2016.....that was my forree back into video gaming. So great
These are very sad times
Nintendo should have made the DLC free of charge.
PSA: There are 2 free themes that you can download right now, that are somewhat of a goodbye to the eShop.
At least for the Wii U eShop, you can still listen to the music
NTSC region eShop on 3DS just has Nintendo Selects, nothing else.
Damn, why didn't Atlus give the US $5 sales on the SMT, and Etrian Odyssey games. I would've bought all of them on the last day if we had those prices.
I can count on my hands the number of time I managed to match the games correctly on my WiiU E-Shop loading screen
Yeah, but if it’s any consolation, just imagine the kind of person who got amazing at the loading screen slot machine
I’ve lost a lot of respect for Nintendo for doing this. I definitely will be nodding my 3DS soon
Nintendo shouldn't have closed eShop for 3DS and Wii U until like 2025.
People would still wait till the day before the eshop closed to start buying games even if nintendo warned them 2 years in advance
It was wild, I am sitting in Japan and was awake until the closure at 9 am or rather 8:58. Nintendo was a little early. ;)
Spent about 2.000 bucks this month on 3DS and Wii U software (and some Wii games) and was researching until the end yesterday as well as playing games to get access to buy their DLC.
Never would have imagined that I’d do such an insane thing but well, it was the end of an era and while today I’m exhausted I’m at peace while also being a little sad.
As for Atlus, they had these cheap sales several times every year for the last couple of years now. No discount in all the DLC though and that’s where all the money is. ;)
Atlus had a final sale planned for Japan as well but canceled it out of the blue much to japanese gamers’ dismay.
bro let me tell u about homebrew
@@Kiirabu197
Do you mean homebrew as in actual homebrew or as in pirating aka stealing?
@@Kiirabu197
Yeah, that’s not what homebrew means.
The one 'game' I specifically wanted to get before the eShop closed was Pokemon Transporter… which you can only get that if you have Pokemon Bank.
It's definitely going to be (albeit not much) sad to see in within the next 5-10 years when Nintendo
will be doing this again for the base Switch eShop.
wish Smash Run was in more than just 3ds, it could be such a great mode
One of the few actually meaningful things 4 has over all other Smash games imo
@@jomaq9233 Now imagine if they'd made more than 1 map for it
2 days before it closed.
I was 20 min late to getting the fire emblem awakening dlc because of progress lock to buy dlc, little sad it was the last thing I was hoping to buy
kudos to the pokemon company for making it actually impossible to download poke transporter without actually paying, assuming you never had bought it before. it was the case for a friend and we waited just to see if they thought of that, and of course they didn't. he downloaded bank beforehand but now he cannot get transporter after its gone free.
always one step forward, two steps back. Bank should've been made free from the moment they started charging for HOME. what a scam
I remember watching the Luigi mansion dark moon ads on the 3ds eShop, rip :(
Yarr! 🏴☠️
I originally modded my 3DS as a way to unlock region and use some homebrew apps.
Wow the UK Wii U eShop had Fatal Frame 2! 😮PS3 has it available to download still, but the Wii version was different!
Recently hacked my 3ds. The eshop shutting down isn’t a big deal for preservation. People have done it. It’s all available online
Shame on Nintendo for still doing this even after all the backlash, Sony kept theirs open after the backlash but Nintendo didn’t (it’s no longer possible to get Hatsune Mini Project Mirai DX on a UK 3DS, I have nostalgia for that game, it was my first Miku game in 2016, I’ll miss you)
Project Mirai DX was the last 3DS game (that isn't a virtual console title) that I purchased on the 3DS eShop
Random but I never noticed how many vocaloid themes the 3ds had💀 sadly never got the chance to get any
I hope if I mod my DS I can get them

I was so diligent in making sure to update all my games, make sure I had all free dlc etc… then I went to play Runbow with my wife last night and seen there was free DLC for Shantae and Freedom Planet costumes that I missed -_- ahh well.
I was there at the end for my loved Wii U
Didn't give the same credit to 3DS store though
More games physically available than for Wii U
I noticed that Wii U shop games in Germany/Europe didn't recieve much price lowering in their last days which I fi d really a shame
as it's line they wanted us to not buy games to be preserved
I got as much as many E-Shop games as possible in 2 years when collecting for physical stuff so I'm only sad that I didn't earlier
Greetings from Germany
18:40 this is exactly what I was thinking, lol. So bizarre!
Actually the update thing makes sense because the developer of Fragrant story is making an update that's going to vastly expand the game. So anyone who has Fragrant Story be at the ready. Also I think you can still redownload already owned software for a few months
This is awesome. That’s a developer that knows and cares about its fans.
@@sanachanto The base game was abysmal so they had better update it.
Fire Emblem Fates not being on the eShop before it closed is funny to me and I don't know why
Ummm it was there tho... I literally bought all 3 through birthright a day before the shutdown.
@@MrMiagi-hx3ow it might depend on what region your 3ds is, I think it was removed earlier for PAL regions
It's what people use to hack the wii, haxchi
@@bernie8779 Oh is it? ahah I had no idea, well that also explains it.

Oh, and I wish the DSiware store getting shut down was more publicized. I also forgot to check that out before it went down. I made sure to check out the 3DS and Wii U... but not the DSi!
Goodbye I'll miss that silly shopping bag and the sound of items being added to an app I the downloading screen 🤕
I'm lucky that all the games that I purchased fit on my current SD-card, because although you can still re-download bought content, that service will also shut down sooner or later
Um we still have to upgrade
I think Earthbound Origins isn't on the list as it was a limited time dealy, like the 3D Mario Anniversary on Switch.
I witnessed both the birth and the death of the eShop. It has spanned… just over half my life I think? Hmm.

It's still crazy to me how Nintendo of America delisted Tropical Freeze when the Switch port came out... and just never put it back on there.
im sadge now T_T as much as i love the switch the 3DS is my most used piece of nintendo hardware, last year i actually wound up buying a N2ds modded it, and still enjoying the games on it to this day,

Woah what!? The eShop for us in the U.S. looks nothing like this! We were completely gutted. The Wii U eShop main page for example is completely empty. No categories or anything
I got a few things last minute but missed out on a few. Wish I'd got a new3ds before they sold out, they're ridiculous prices second hand now, even refurbished ones cost more than they did at launch. Doesn't seem like five years since it was discontinued.
I wonder why they didn't sell gba and DS games on the 3ds eshop, it can run them both natively.
Ah well.
