@David Parry Imagine a David Perry who knew history.
It wasn't 'questioning religious orthodoxy' (which orthodoxy? There are quite a number of them) that gained us 'a useable understanding of how reality works' (what do you mean, 'reality'?) We've had quite a 'usable' understanding ever since Aristotle, and the Church added to that. What you probably mean is the modern sciences, whose only advantage over the medieval Schoolmen is their measuring instruments' precision. The logic, use of evidence, and organization of interpretation passed directly to the sciences from the Church.
_comparing it to the nonsense written in some 'bible' by ignorant peasants_
not that you showed that this is actually true, I note.
_find reality is the only truth_
If you read the Bible, you'll find that you are agreeing with it on this.
_and the bible is clearly wrong_
Again, you seem to leave out all that evidence that you appear to believe in, O man of faith.
_even going so far as to allow us to make machines that allow us to discuss these very points down a wire and via satellite links through space._
Yes, the sciences are very useful. Limited, but useful in their way.
_Imagine rejecting reality and clinging to the 'bible' instead_
One would have to imagine it, since it does not happen. your enthymeme has led you to a Hasty Generalization fallacy.
_But you don't have to imagine that, do you MeE?_
No, I see it every time you post. You cling to a false Bible so that you may criticise something, but you are clinging. Good luck with that.

Diane Athey Personal experiences and testimonies do not count as evidence unless they can be be verified. Many people have claimed to witness several things, should we automatically believe them? How can you determine that it is a true story? Because it gives you the feels and aligns with your belief system? That’s great and all, but if you’re trying to convince people of its validity, then a TH-cam video about someone’s personal experience isn’t going to convince anyone. This person may have seen hell, but we cannot truly know and should never say we do. There could be a different explanation for his experience. Truth is what we can demonstrate to be true and factual. I can tell everyone that I witnessed a pink unicorn, but you should never believe me unless I am able to truly convince you of that claim.
There could be many explanations that haven’t been verified yet, but we should never jump to impossible, supernatural conclusions in order to make up for it. The fact that everyone has different experiences according to their beliefs, shows that just stating claims isn’t reliable. This person may have seen their version of hell, but someone could claim that it’s completely different from that. Who should we believe? Also, any god that creates a hell for those who don’t believe, worship, or love him is petty and corrupt. Not worth following in my opinion.

As a former Jew, and one well versed in the Torah, it has to do with knowledge of GOOD AND EVIL. As these were concepts, especially "evil" that God, in his perfect garden, didn't want his creations subjected to. Once man "knows" the evils of the world, he is susceptible to them. All that is b.s of course, but it's their way.

I suspect that there was a far better Babylonian precursor to that silly story. The deadly Knowledge was Carnal Knowledge, and they found that It Was Good! That's why they hid those bits from God.
But they had learned to Multiply, which of course is God's fault anyway, and that's why everybody has to die. So the problem is Arithmetic, not Sin.

When I was a kid in Slovakia, we would regularly sing a song in church, whose words were allegedly written by Thomas Aquinas and which I am translating here (not from Aquinas’ original, just from the Slovak text I remember to this day), “My sight and my taste would want to deceive me, but my hearing teaches me firm faith to have.” In other words, don’t believe what you see, believe what they tell you.

Fix this, and we could probably do things like stopping smoking, etc. If God is the only reason so-called believers treat me with kindness, then they are probably also having issues with the above, and you will see how connected it is and what is stopping us from doing things like curing our depression or anxiety, etc.

No, not anymore, because I've realized that there's no real good reason to believe it exits. Since I'm inclined to think you believe in it yourself, here's something to think about: why would an omnipotent, omnibenevolent deity create a place of eternal torture, for simply not believing in his existence? To think that this is just is to acknowledge that this god has a very warped sense of justice, for "sins" that amount to nothing that harms anyone or anything. Also, since the whole message behind sharing the gospel is to preach forgiveness, here's another question: why couldn't god just simply *forgive* humanity for literally anything he might find offensive, instead of making an elaborate plan spanning multiple millennia in which he sacrifices himself to himself in order to forgive us (as well as himself?) for "sins" he knew we'd commit before we even existed, yet did nothing to stop us from committing them in the first place. Hell is an idea made to influence others out of fear.

That is true, belief doesn't prove existence or non existence. However, anyone making a positive claim must show evidence for it. As for eye witnesses, there are a number of things wrong. First, they don't all agree on what hell is like (or heaven for that matter). Second, brains deprived of oxygen and close to death will start doing some crazy stuff, and really can't be trusted to properly describe reality. Also, everything about a person that remotely resembles a "soul" or spirit" resides in the frontal lobe - get rid of that, and you have a husk that simple eats and breathes, which might suggest anything that you could consider to go on to experience hell is purely physical. Eye witnesses don't mean anything when it comes to dreams or delusions.

@@poplionandrew5803 I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. Perhaps that scientists have no compassion. This is a huge and inaccurate generalisation- even for those that developed the A bomb. Many of those men called themselves Christians and even if they were atheists they had compassion. They acted out of defense for their countries and way of life. The A bomb forced the Japanese to surrender. They had already had their cities carpet bombed in the weeks before Hiroshima, killing a staggering number of people. far more infact than the 2 A bombings put togetehr. An invasion would have killed even more, Japanese and allied troops. The Japanese women threw themselves and their children off cliffs rather than be captives of the 'American devils'. The Christian concept of compassion and forgiveness is a fine one, but one even the most devout Christian nations seem unable to provide for their people and their neighbours.

@Steve yes, they do, it makes them feel pious. They love turning the other cheek. You can only do that when someone has smacked the first cheek. @Steve Did I meantion Christ? No, as a person, he was particularly blameless, it's those who came after I was talking about, but even then- corruption? I didn't say that either. No, that wasn't corruption that was openly and honestly promoted at one time as the only way into heaven. Yes, i did word it a bit cynically...perhaps 'entry by donation' is a better way to put it. That was a vast improvement on the earlier entry by martyrdom, don't you think? Otherwise everyone was supposed to wait in their graves until judgement day. It's nice that they changed it it to entry through confession (and a small donation) now. Some churches of course ask for tithes and milk their flock mercilessly, yes, I consider THAT to be corruption. But then perhaps they are still doing their flock a service, for is not the love of money the root of all evil? To be given the opportunity to give freely is a gift in itself. Many Christians are very charitable, kind people. All that does not take away from the undeniable fact that the Christian faith is built on martyrdom, sacrifice and forgiveness. All things useless without persecution.

At the time, the Catholic Church was the richest most powerful organization in Europe and didn't order theCrusade for monetary reasons. Now this could be lies and history omits the true motivation, but my only point is that religion alone can make Crusaders march or terrorists fly into buildings. Not to play either ofus for fools. Of course most religious leaders use religion for gain.

The events of the bible have even been documented in other cultures such as ancient china, other historical figures that are not even believers have mentioned people from the bible. Many historical artifacts and megaliths mentioned in the bible still stand today and are in most cases heavily guarded, such as The Rock of Horeb and the Ark of the Covenant. Do you believe Plato existed? or king Ramesses, Nimrod, Aristotle? because many historians do, and some of them are way more ancients then Jesus. The fact that he rose from the dead indicates that he was not lying when he promised eternal life. Theology starts from an unfounded premise (God X exists) and then extrapolates from there. Even _good_ theologians , who use logic well in their extrapolations, are starting from an unjustified premise. The bad ones, like William Lane Craig(who claims philosophy should serve theology) don't even use logic well to extrapolate.

Those who want to look beyond the false reality can do so. Because you may be trying to hide it, but I know for a fact what that situation was, and that woman was just living, and you personify the devil onto her because she's a little different from the rest? Youre a pathetic monster. Also, it doesn;t stand to reason that if you and I exist, that something else resists because here watch this: Because you and I exist that means the flying spaghetti monster exists, and I know through devine revelation that he is the one, praise his holy sauciness. Get the fuck out of here with your hate. You have shown yourself to be a monster, and you disgust me.

I’m very glad to have found this TH-camr, thank you for your insight. I came out as an atheist last year, and I’m not the best spoken person. But you’ve given me the right tools to explain to family, friends and those who are of faith why the evidence shows God doesn’t exist. It’s hard to explain something when believers have such an obnoxiously staunch fallacy, oftentimes speaking over me as they become more flustered with my answers.

You have an impersonal worldview in which everything is determined by your evolutionary chemical interactions. You live in a deterministic world that is void of meaning, logic and purpose. This speaker is inconsistent because he is claiming truth in which in his world view, truth is relative. He claims absolute truth but ultimately, he can be certain of nothing. He is a man who is fighting for people to turn from God. The reason we call him a warlock is because he doesn't even realize satan is controlling him. This man worships the universe and had no value in a deterministic world

You really have to be on top of your game to avoid the traps they're so capable of setting. But if you've freed but 1 mind, then your efforts are worthwhile. Ex Christian here. I was raised Christian from birth. There were two things that broke the spell. One was simply reading the bible from cover to cover and seeing what a malicious, genocidal maniac the character of "God" was portrayed as. Therefore this God was either not a God of love or didn't exist. I don't believe I'm the first person that became an Atheist from reading the bible either. The other was science and astronomy. Everything points to an old universe and old Earth.
From believer to Atheist wasn't a quick or easy transition. It was slow and painful. Painful as most family members were Christian. It was like being excommunicated from the family as well. It's like finding out Santa Claus isn't real, yet the whole family still believes in him!

I was in college- yeah, took me that long to break out- and our class went to see an exhibit at the local natural history museum on evolution. I was especially struck by the whale part, how the whales still had tiny back legs in their skeleton and all the transitional forms, and I went "oh wow, this isn't bull sh!t, this is real!" And now my Dad keeps trying to reconvert me and my mother very rarely mentions how she things God put dinosaur bones in the earth to as some kind of trick. *sigh*

The insane Rape Laws (Deut 22), you're blessed if you smash your Children with rocks (Psalm 139:9), and the horrid Revelation, where Yashua is going to come back and destroy anything and everything.
Here's that verse when Yashua tells people to Hate their Families.
Luke 14:26 ""If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters--yes, even their own life--such a person cannot be my disciple."

Moment Of Faith. Can you tell me the Genealogy of Yashua?
How about who provoked Israel and struck down 70,000 People in 2st Samuel 24 and 1st Chronicles 21:1?
What was Yashua born in, a House or a Troff?
Who was at Yashua's Tomb when he rose from the Dead, and why don't we have any records of the Roman Population rising from the Dead too?
Who is Satan in your Mythical World, God's Anger, a random Thought, or a Rebellious Angel? Which is it?
Why don't you follow all the instructions of Yashua and God to the letter?
It is said in Romans 2:13 "For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified."
But now that commences a whole mess of other problems and contradictions.

Ignoring reality is most prevalent and most noticeable with religious people, but make no mistake: It can be found in all layers of society. People in general just aren't as smart as we like to think we are.
Americans have to realize that fanatic religious people are a rarity in other western countries. We do have a lot of religious people here in Europe, but they are moderate and don't take their bible literally and certainly don't feel the need to flaunt it offensively, like in trying to deny human rights for others. Basically, the worst it gets over here is the occasional knock on your door from a Jehova's witness. - America is the land of extremes, and that also goes for many of its religious inhabitants. Unfortunately.

If I didn't live in America, you'd have just pissed me off. Because I'm an American, broken as we are. They've even somehow convinced millions to vote against their own interests, not to mention Gerrymandering. I used to vote a ten minute walk round trip, but because of Gerrymandering, it would be a three hour walk. It took me an hour to go vote round trip on Tuesday, that shit ain't right in this country. Just saying, it's not all of our fault. They've been gaming the system, it should be illegal, but they have too many within the government. We're just a few years from the new Night of Long Knives.

For most "believers" to stop "believing" (it) would mean they can no longer be the god of their own universe. What I mean is they no longer get to claim all the knowledge and they no longer get to judge people and make rediculous thought assumptions they like to pass along as fact. It's a god complex and/or they project their ego as god. That's why they are always speaking for him.
