Ever since I made the video about the 4Kids One Piece dub, a similar video but about the Ghost Stories dub has become one of the most requested video topics I get; I figured, what better time to deliver than Halloween?

A side note, regarding Ghost Stories' ratings:
Ghost Stories' particularly low ratings were in no short part due to having a particularly unsavory time slot. You could easily argue that its ratings were pretty good considering what it was dealing with--which I have no doubt there's a lot of truth to, since there's plenty of evidence to suggest that it did have its loyal fans. But alas, the fact still remains that its ratings were still low and that Pierrot had high standards for success. For example, GTO finished airing a month before Ghost Stories and its average rating was 28.5--about double Ghost Stories at its peak. And I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that Pierrot had plenty of other shows that raked in high numbers.
Suffice to say, success is relative; and for Pierrot, Ghost Stories just wasn't up to their standard--ergo, in their eyes, it was a failure.

I spoke to the voice director at a con about the dub because she also worked on Panty And Stocking. Turns out they got alot of creative freedom and when that happens you either get a complete nightmare or a magical experience

Yep! Chris Ayers told similar sorties since his little brother worked on it, but also worked a lot in voice directing and I believe he was friends with the voice director of Ghost Stories too (small circle and all).

The english voice actors INVENTED the script. They even invented and ran with each other's running gags, such as the super christian girl having previously been a drug addicted slut. (The following episode, the boy mishears "momoko collapsed!" as "Momoko relapsed!")
14:20 I love the last few episodes, I don't know why they never come up in clip reels. By that point, the characters have gone full Deadpool. They're fully aware they're in an anime, and they're actively roasting the terrible scripts. There's even one where the story is so muddled that the writer speaks to the audience directly through one of the kids, saying he can't figure out what's supposed to be going on. It's utter madness.
I love how in the last episode they are fully aware they're in the anime and just want the series to end "it's the last episode you think i'm gonna die?"

the dub in a nutshell: "Alright I need you guys to dub this, but make it more interesting than the original" and they sure as hell did
French guy here. We actually have a similarly iconic so-different-it's-hilarious dub here, though the circumstances behind it were wildly different. Long story short, since anime licenses were cheap, in the eighties channels were buying them in bulk to fill up their kiddy morning blocks, with little regard to what they were actually purchasing. And then one of them ended up being Fist of the North Star.
The staff threw a massive fit over having to show a super violent post-apocalyptic story in a block aimed at six years olds, and ended up with a deal where the VAs got complete control over the script. The resulting puntastic, joke-filled show was the stuff of legends. "Ken le Survivant" (Ken the Survivor) is a classic, though for completely different reasons than the true FotNS.
When I feel confident about my grasp on the French language, the first thing I'm doing is making videos about the French dubs for Fist of the North Star and City Hunter (Nicky Larson en français)

the dub actors refused to dub hokuto no ken as it was too violent and would only dub it if they were given full white card to dub as they wish and the studio actually accepted and the dub that came out of this is still a huge meme in france anime community

European Portuguese dub of Dragon Ball Z in the late 90s is an even earlier one, just look up "Portuguese Vegeta talks for nonstop while beating Miss Ginyu", you'll find it hard to believe it's an actual dub.

I spoke to Greg Ayres (Voice of Leo) at anime boston (he shows up like every year) about it he basically summed it up as that it came in a bundle for a bunch of shows the studio got the license to. Guy in charge gave them the go a head to go ham but stick closely to the source material as best they could since the show didn't do so well back at home. He said it was the most fun he's had in his career and I don't blame him.

The ADR Script WAS translated and was originally going to be line for line, but in November 2005, Director George Manley told the VAs "Fuck it. Make up anything. Forget the script".
The ADR production was dubbed in just 6 weeks time. All ADV Dubs at the time were done at the Jersey Village/North Central Houston based "Industrial Smoke and Mirrors" Studio. Seraphrim is all dubbed in the Yorktown Galleria area of Houston.
Each Episode's Original ADR Plot was thrown out each time the VAs entered the Recording Both.
Things DID go off the gotdamn rails by the 12th and 13th Episodes.
It was Rob Mungle's idea to use Shock Value Humor in each rewritten script.
Greg Ayers personally enjoyed mocking and self depreciating the anime.
I met All of the original Voice Actors Hillary Haag,Monica Rial, Chris Patton,Rob Mungle,Greg Ayers, Christine Auten, George Manley at the now defunct Alamo Drafthouse in Mission Bend,West Oaks. They admitted that they rewrote the entire original Ghost Stories script from scratch.
I got a personal photo with Hillary and Monica with my then 23 year old self via Old Fashioned Disposable Kodak Taken Tuesday May 30,2006. They're BFFs. Hillary WAS dating a Black Man at the time. He was one of the ADR Supervisors.
Ghost Stories' dub was coincidencently completed about 2 months after the Cast completed dubbing the 2003 Hit Anime Spinoff of Full Metal Panic called Fumoffu.
The Ghost Stories DVD Singles sold rather poorly. ADV viewed them from the get go as a lost cause.

Yeah, she's the main character learning about what happened to her mother and why her mother fought ghosts during her years in the same school.
Her mother is also a former lesbian who met Born Again Betty at the (in her words) "Wonderful Exodus Homosexual Conversion Camp" and is the reason why the Evangelical member is also the most spiritually sensitive.
This show goes places I would have never imagined AND I LOVE IT!!!

Whenever i mention this dub i describe it as "this is an official abridged" and that description isnt really doing it justice but the best way to describe how different these two versions are
This makes me sad. All the actors had so much fun but knew it was a once in a lifetime scenario. Further cemented the fact that we ain’t gonna be getting another dub like this again.

iirc ADV rebranded themselves after they declared bankruptcy. So while ADV Films as we knew them are no longer a thing, the core of the original company is still intact I believe. I haven't looked into them in a while now, though, so my info may be heavily outdated.

Of course there was a script for the general plot of each episode. If each voice actor would just say the first random joke it came to their minds then the plot would have eventually got lost in the first 5 minutes of each episode. The script just helped to stablish some "sense" And parameters in each character. Then, of course most of the jokes and dialogues were improvises by the voice actors.
you can't adlib all of that while following the plot and being limited by the animation. of course it was scripted...
how would you adlib while maintaining the original plot? or when the scene changes abruptly? or if you simply don't know what is going to happen visually? plus, the dub is only great because it was limited by the plot. it's the perfect example of creative limitation.

@@theoneitself iirc I actually spoke (or wrote to Steven in the comments, if you will) to Steven Foster, he said that they'd first watch the episode in japanese with english subtitles, and then gather around his desk to write a script, where they'd write the plot down and any jokes they could make around that, they'd then go into the recording booth 1 by 1 and record their lines. The first one into the studio that day/period got to set the general tone of several scenes of dialogue.

It would have to be something that did horrendous in Japan in terms of ratings or reception to have another situation like Ghost Stories.

The backlash THEN was great. A thing many people forget is that as far as I remember, this came out on VHS. Back in the VHS days, you didn't get a choice of Dub or Sub, you got what Sam Goody got in...which was the dub...and there was *NO* indication it was a parody dub. People were fucking LIVID at how disgusting and disrespectful the dub was. Heck, I still am and every time people rave about the Ghost Stories dub it makes me angry.
My favorite is the grumpy lady at the memorial service, “yeah, yeah she’s dead. Can we go now?”

I don't watch very much anime, but occasionally my sister and I watch some together. One day she suggested Ghost Stories, and she didn't give any details before showing me the first episode, which I was surprised to see was the English dub since she prefers subs. I immediately found out why she picked the dub, and that was some of the most fun I've ever had with anime. Anyone who hasn't watched it should do themselves a favor and do so immediately.

@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley Abridged series in anime tends to mean "let's make everything completely ridiculous and change everyone's personality to be funnier" and the aspects here - all that has to stay the same is names and basic plot; it is now a comedy instead of the original genre - is stereotypical of anime abridged series on TH-cam, and while these abridged series are shortened, it's not by as much as you would think. As such, referring to this dub as essentially an official Abridged series would be perfectly normal among fans of the actual abridged series.

I watched the Indonesian dub when I was in elementary school under the tittle "Ghost at School". The script followed the original Japanese one. I have always loved it, the plot is actually great and I didn't feel like it was boring. Years later in middle school, a friend of mine told me about the english dubbed series called "Ghost Stories", we searched it up on youtube, and I recognised it right away. I definitely didn't see what's coming when we clicked play.
In my country GNK also followed the original, and this anime was my childhood, the story is really amazing, I think Americans says the story is bad because they listen and repeat it, I bet they actually never had watched the original one..

The plot in which satsuki's mother exorcised all the yokais, but because of the construction of builds and destruction of the monuments they were released and Satsuki (who has her mom's diary) is the only able to exorcise them back. About the old School too..This can't be the best anime ever, but it's pretty interesing, well, at least for ppl who likes Yokai culture and japanese folklore like me. Yes, despites I have some nostalgic feelings. At least This anime is so good compared to the most new animes coming out these years..

My favorite lines are probably from that one episode with the construction workers and the haunted complex. The sheer delivery of "Look out, Ted!" and the absurdity of "There's nothing there but poles, and I don't mean people from Poland" get me every time.

It’s too bad. I really want to see more “screwing around”. Take some quiet, understated garbage and try to recycle it for a quick buck for everyone involved.
It always seemed like the VAs had a blast and I think everyone walked away happy.

There is an official amine that did though happen 1 - 2 years it was voiced by youtube voice actors I think the name some like My Girlfriend is a Valley Girl or something like that.
