I've got a 2013 D5 V60. I bought it because I wanted a comfortable, well equipped, reliable family estate. It's been utterly faultless in the 3 years I've had it. It's actually faster than my old Octavia vRS too. In terms of size, the BMW 3 series is a closer match than the 5 series but that doesn't have the equipment levels or reliability of the V60.

V70 D3 owner here, reactive lenses in glasses, no corduroy trousers though. No extra label for annoying hand brake, I still move it the wrong way after 6 months though. I've just bought one of these (November 20), brilliant car, badged a d4, but it has the same 2.0, 5 cylnder engine as the one you tested, but with a torque converter auto box. i use it for work (i repair washing machines). i reset the trip computer when i got it, and having since done 6000 miles, about 40% of which is in town, the average consumption is 48.6mpg, which i think is pretty amazing. It really is such a joy to drive, even with a washing machine on board! Also, being a high spec SE Lux, it's laden with very advanced saftey tech, which even today very few brand new cars have, and it's now 8 years old.

My D3 R Design was a great car, such a torquey engine, hardly anything went wrong in 150,000 miles, the most reliable car I have ever owned. Cam belt only needs changing every 108k miles. Superb motorway cruiser. Wouldn’t hesitate in recommending one. Only changed it as now hardly doing any miles so have purchased a petrol car. So much more stylish than a run of the mill Audi, bmw, Vauxhall or Ford.

The trouble with the NG Saab ,was for owners, the lack of parts availability (windscreens for instance) and the diagnostics moving on to Tec3 which was completely incompatible with Tec 2 and the equipment was only rented to Saab dealers and Indies, never sold.
So when the plug was pulled, so was the ability to do deep diagnostic testing (not ideal on a " new" car)
I do agree that had they got the estate out it might have helped them, and it was a looker in the pictures I saw.

    Hey, I considered a V70, and I don't wear tinted glasses, lol.
But I have the V50, which was replaced by the V60 I guess. Both of them are similar sized. And the best way I could describe the V60, is a COMPACT estate/hatchback. Not quite as big as a V70, but bigger and more practical than a Golf or Focus hatch, which I believe the V60 originally shared its platform with. But unlike the Ford, you probably feel like you're in something which is a little bit different, and not so generic. The V50 gives that impression, with its styling, and the floating centre console. And if does feel well built, with quality materials.
So in short, the V60 is for those that want a hatchback, with a smidge more room in the boot. Great for growing families I guess. But offering a little bit more excitement than a big barge.
The V50 sold quite well, as did the V40 before it. But I haven't seen that many used V60's on the market, so maybe their owners like them enough to hang on to them.
    Merry Christmas Matt 🎄🎅

Decent car and with 215hp I’m 27 and can’t quite bring myself to own a v70 but want a decent sized D5 engined car that just eats the miles too and from work. The great thing about a small Volvo or other estate car is the ease of parking in cities and towns! Also, there's enough boot space for most luggage equipment without any backseat passengers. With our roads clogged up with SUVs and 4x4s (that will never see a spec of mud!), it's essential to drive an alternative safe car (in case of an accident), which has great fuel efficiency. Thanks.

The 5-cyl diesel-engines are very reliable. Always a great choice when going for Volvo. I've seen them with 300-400,000km still going strong! If I were to buy a Volvo (and I am thinking about one in the future), I'd buy a V70 D4 (5cyl one, so no newer than 2014 pretty much)
Newer ones with 4-cyl seem to be alright as well but it's not the same thing. And they do have more issues in form of EGR-valve stuff and what not. Safer to go for a 5-cyl, a lot more fun as well!

Another excellent review Matt. I have a 2013 V40 SE Lux D3 (5cyl) which I really do like a lot. Nice engine, economical, fast enough (for me) and although compact quite big enough for my needs (and it has a proper handbrake and those lovely comfortable leather heated seats). Almost 87k on it now has never let me down and everything works and feels solid. I always felt the V60 was neither one thing or the other and kind of fell between 2 stools. Not that many of them on the roads, even compared to the same era S60 which is much more common and to my eyes better looking while being almost just as practical.
Thanks again for an honest and entertaining review. Seasonal wishes to you and all the best for 2021!

Hi Matt, I know you think they are boring!!! but my second car is a Ford Mondeo hatchback !!!!! Absolute massive boot on these vehicles, with the back seats down me and the wife, can easily fit two mountain bikes and even have a little room left for the mother-in-law>>> if she lays sideways 😁😁😁😁

I went to look at one yesterday. 2 litre diesel business edition. Didn’t buy as the boot as well as being short, it was also quite shallow. The seats were as you’ve said just about perfect. The big deal breaker for me was the fact there was NO space for your feet! No clutch foot rest, no accelerator foot rest, so feet have to be under the pedals when using the cruise! What a let down for a business car mile muncher………

I have a V60. The boot is big enough for almost anything I need, and I have two dogs. I just don't see why I should pay more for a bigger car that costs more in insurance and uses more fuel.

Funny, I traded in my 2013 xc70 d5 for a 2016 v60 rdesign d6 hybrid. Indeed the boot is much smaller (even more so for the hybrid), but rear seating is better... it all depends what one uses the car for. I don’t use any diesel for going to work an back... which was my main reason for the change. The xc70 was just too thirsty for what it offered.

I helped my mum pick her current car which had to be an estate and she like the look of no others except the V60, r design (I preferred the Mazda 6 personally). We were buying brand new and she got 30% off the rrp for a t3. Budget wouldnt stretch to a brand new german.
Having driven it a bit, I dont like the following:
Gear box doesn't feel connected to anything
    Nor does steering wheel
When you raise the clutch, it raises the engine revs, which is frustrating when you are trying to park and more so if you're used to blipping between gear changes.
Infotainment system isnt the best for its age and I think the centre console buttons are a bit cluttered.
    Dont also like the VC
Except for that (and I genuinely mean this) great car to drive.
Only thing that has gone wrong in 5 years is fuel rail sensor.

Had a 2012 V60 1.6 R-design until earlier this year. Not the fastest of car nor the most manoeuvrable but on a long motorway run it was heaven. Comfy seats, and safe as houses. I had mine 3 years and was bulletproof. It’s not a mind blowing car but it’s solid and reliable. Oh and cheap to run!

Stealth cars, stylish enough not to be bland, not a 'spare room' Volvo estate more a long-form hatchback, handy for a couple of dogs or when you can't be arsed to lift stuff out of a deep hatch. Classy colour, and those seats look good enough for a lounge. Yeah, I'm liking the 'unknown' V60...

So it's a bit "meh", like this comment.
If you're in the market for a large estate, a small estate isn't the answer, my choices would be
    Ford Mondeo Estate - 755L
    Volvo V90 Estate - 723L
    Skoda Superb Estate - 660L
    MB E Class Estate - 640L
Whilst the BMW 5 Series Touring is a great car, it doesn't pull off the "large estate" as well as the others at 560L.
For completeness the V60 is 658L, so would should probably be on my list to consider.

Great video! Own a 2014 V60 myself(The facelifted which is so much better looking) and think it's an amazing car. Perfect size for me, I have enough packing space but it still looks sportier and better than the V70. Also one of the smoothest and most comfortable cars I've driven. Volvo does have a few quality issues though, so far these 6 months I've owned it I have had to change a clutch cylinder but thats okay.

I do agree about the 1.6 though. I have a 1,6 litre T4f with 180hp which is very pleasant to drive alone but when I have it full of my friends and packed it can feel a bit weak. But still a lovely and quiet engine.

The wife had a V60...if you’re going to get it get a good one with high spec.
    We got a 2012 D2 V60 42,000 miles for £9k in 2017. Worst car we ever owned.
Battery kept going flat, passenger interior lock failed, seatbelts may or may not retract, boot kept getting stuck and dealer did not want to know Kia Plymouth) because this all happened 3 days after 6 month warranty ran out...replaced with a Vauxhall Corsa and the wife is MUCH happier.
