The blurred top section starting at 1:37 is due to an incorrect fact I had posted. Find My Device DOES work on GrapheneOS. One difference from the stock OS is that if the device is turned off, it will NOT be reachable. I haven't tested out the feature yet, but I may for a future video since I'm sure some people would like to use it on their device.
@sideofburritos Thank you very much for all your hard work and this excellent video. We appreciate you updating the video with the issue correction at said time-frame. Very kind of you! Looking forward to seeing more of your great work in the future! - GrapheneOS Team
Holy crap, the persistent audio device switcher is a GODSEND. There have been so many times where ive had my earphones connected but i havent played anything in a while, then ill open a social media app that doesnt use the media player, and have to go to a music player app or even play some music JUST to get that switcher to come up for me.
Great overview, thank you. One thing I found on my GrapheneOS install (pixel 6A) was that I needed to re-install the offline dictionary to do voice-to-text. That feature completely stopped working and had me scratching my head. That would have been a significant pain point for me, as I use speech-to-text routinely, and prefer the offline feature so (presumably) no data goes to Google. A helpful fellow on the GrapheneOS forum clearly outlined how to restore that functionality. It was straightforward, and worked.
@@maklimcz I use the built in functionality in the standard google (gboard) keyboard. After downloading the offline database, I disable network access to gboard.
My phone updated and I honestly didn't even notice I was just like ahh things look a little different and boom checked to see android 15! Thanks for the videos!
@@sideofburritos My banking app started working again. I wonder if Google stopped blocking them or did Graphene work around google lol not sure but happy it is working again. I used browser while the app was down. If you find out what happened let us know please. Thanks
Thanks! I haven't used RCS in a while, but I haven't seen any reports of issues on Android 15 with it. Apart from the usual strangeness that happens when people try to use it. Here's the megathread when it comes to RCS - discuss.grapheneos.org/d/1353-using-rcs-with-google-messages-on-grapheneos
I think for RCS to work with Graphene, Google needs to approve the OS (which is never going to happen). RCS may be an "open standard", but Google controls it on Android.
Interesting that the screen recorder blocks out incognito except when in splitscreen mode. And still shows the touchscreen cursor when inputting a passcode.
It does block it out in incognito/split screen. If I had tried to unlock incognito, it would then be black. It just stills shows the unlock screen in the recording. As far as the touches go, I had those manually enabled in the screen recording. Still kind of surprising they wouldn't have blocked that out now that you mention it. Seems like they should hide everything related to PIN entry if they're going to block it anyway.
Oh! Mahalo for specifying that "Find My Device" doesn't work in Android 15! Excellent! No phone is worth tying myself to what will undoubtedly be a huge, intrusive mesh network. Haven't decided whether I need to upgrade to Graphene's Android 15 quite yet. Thanks to you, however, I see it won't be all that bad. Aloha!
Absolutely, I see no reason not to upgrade. By not upgrading, you're also missing out on the underlying security improvements/fixes that Android 15 has.
What I initially posted what incorrect about the “Find My Device” feature. Here's a copy of the pinned comment I added: The blurred top section starting at 1:37 is due to an incorrect fact I had posted. Find My Device DOES work on GrapheneOS. @@sideofburritos Mahalo for this research! Most of the time, the NFC, BT, WiFi and cell radios are all turned OFF on my phone BEFORE I shut off the phone anyway. Because of Apple mesh network, I taught myself to do this with my iPhone 6S when I had it. Because of Apple, I kept all my inactive phones off and in my Faraday bag until it was time for me to make a call. I'm not concerned with receiving calls. Again...many thanks and much aloha!
I see GrapheneOS Devs recommending using this, but I'm still not sure the best way to do this? Google Apps in the private space vs sensitive apps in the privates space, etc?
If you share your device, then I would be more concerned about my sensitive apps. If you don't share your device, then your sensitive apps should already be protected by your device PIN. On a non-shared device, it would then seem better to have Google Apps in the private space. If you're concerned about your sensitive apps in the same spot as Google Apps, then a separate User would be better. Like @Fuzzzdaddy said, “There isn't a “best” way. Just a way that makes sense to you.”
Great video! Can you have multiple private spaces? Does private space replace multiple user profiles and has this changed your setup from the previous video? Presumably there is no IPC between privace space(s) and the host profile and each other?
At this time, no. You're limited to one. No, I haven't begun using it yet. I don't see it changing my setup unless private space becomes available in secondary user profiles. Or, if the “install available apps” is added to private space. This thread has a bunch of details and discussion on the feature - discuss.grapheneos.org/d/16670-private-space-on-android-15-grapheneos
I thought split screen functionality was removed. What an obtuse way to enable it. Thanks for the video. Private spaces looks nice, but I assume even with a private space you could still be tracked or spied on with TikTok, Instagram, Google, etc. just by connecting to home wifi or using cellular data at home right?
Exactly what @slashtab said. Private space doesn't help you from a network perspective. For that you need a VPN/TOR. It also comes down to your usage and what information you provide to the service. The one thing private space does is once you lock it, the app will no longer be running in the background.
can't wait till pro 8 finally gets price a bit lower I could afford it and get try it with GOS. The private space feature seems a very decent idea, to have your stuff under a password, different than your phones password. That is a security enhancement, imho.
Absolutely. It's also great because you can use the apps in it, and then when you lock it, they're no longer running. It's a great way to keeps things separate without the added friction of user profiles.
Thanks for the edit, most people like to make a comment and then bounce :). I also had no clue it's been in since 11, I never heard anyone mention it. I feel like it should be a popup somewhere telling you it exists.
I use Proton for email, but I use Mullvad for my VPN. I like the service overall, and I think it's a good option for a lot of people. I'm personally hesitant to use them for everything (email, passwords, etc.), so I try to split that up.
Did you happen to know that even with GrapheneOS it doesn't matter in the end because Googles Tensor Chips have something called Titan M chip(Similar to Intel ME) which is closed source and can control your entire phone, bypass all network configurations, break all encryptions, turn on your phone and all without the OS never being able to detect what it does?
Please refrain from posting unsubstantiated claims. The burden of proof is on you if you discovered something. Posting any random hunch you have without reputable proof is harmful, especially in a public setting. It's also just lazy.

Private Spaces is the best thing that android 15 did
Agreed. It's probably one of the best features they've released in the last few iterations of Android.
Implementation of multiple private space will be easier now. If devs decide to do so. Using it is more convenient than user profile.

thanks for the video, Private space is basicly work profile but you don't need an app like shelter, very cool
It's an user profile technically. You can still have work profile with shelter, so three profiles in owner profile
@slashtab It's similar to a user profile, but it's not technically a user profile.
