Thanks Chris for introducing us to this rare little beastie, I've always appreciated the 348, especially in GTS form, but had no idea that there was a limited edition like this, Rj in Oz
It seems that the 348 was rather unfairly maligned in its day for being more modern than the 308 and having a few issues that were ironed out after a couple of years, and later overlooked in favour of the 355. But some say the late model 348 is really the sweet spot; more modern than a 308, but not as refined and modernised as a 355. Certainly it would seem to be better value for money. Also the 348 was the first of the "Challenge" cars.

Always thought from what I read and saw over the years that the 348's were very underrated, great to see them getting a lot more respect these days, I mean how fast do you need a road sports car anyway?? They always seemed to have the perfect amount of power for the road. 348's and 355's, greatest sports cars ever made.
Official power of the F355 is 380hp, but those factory power figures are not accurate per se. F355s that get past 350hp on the dyno are pretty rare, while the 348 is more consistently close to 300hp (official power figure). So roughly the power difference is 50hp, for the GTC 10-20hp less, all in all nothing close to the 100hp Chris suggests.

the 355 never gave 380hp from the factory, and was good if it gave 350hp and the 5 valve engine was torque light. The 348 4 valve engine was consistently close to its 300hp and the later 348 GTB and GTC corrected all the defects of the earlier cars and added 20hp like the GTC, but its image was already tarnished by then so not many of those last cars were produced.

Thing is with a GTC they will pretty much always have an OEM exhaust which sounds better than the standard OEM but not anything like as good as some aftermarket exhausts out there. My 348 TS has a Tubi which sounds fantastic imo.
@@petei3972 348’s and 355’s with Tubi’s or Capristo’s is just the most iconic car sound of the late 90’s early 2000’s for me. It’s the sound of old Gumball VHS tapes, honestly I’d put it right at the top of my list of the best sounding cars of all time.

I’ve been on the 348 wagon for years!!!! Such a lovely car when you realize that speed isn’t everything. All 80s and 90s cars are slow by today’s standards, and the new stuff is no more enjoyable for it.
The trouble with them being so rare is there is only one real mechanical specialist left who can service these correctly, and he lives on the dark side of Ganymede!
Someone needs to make a modern vehicle inspired by the look of this. Modern suspension, modern construction techniques, modern materials, light weight and perhaps lope four cylinders off one of Cosworth’s latest v12s and call it a day.
Ferrari is protective of its brand, if it even looks like it borrowed lines from Ferrari, the team of attorneys will pounce ruthlessly. The best you can do, is take existing 348's, and modernize them while maintaining the original engine.

I think the 348 was the last Ferrari V8 that actually sounded like a V8 super car…similar to the TVR Cerbera: Howl of a racing four pot, with a distinct V8 growl underneath
The later 348 GTB and 348 GTS (compared to the original 348TB And 348TS) corrected all the problems of the earlier cars in terms of handling and added an extra 20hp like the 348 Competizione. However by that time in 1994 the 348s image was tarnished and so not many of those last series GTB/GTS cars were made. Also the 348 GT Competizione i believe weighed 90kg less than the standard car not 200kg, although it still has many details outside and inside that i like, like the split rim wheels, brakes derived from the f40 and different interior steering wheel and gear knob in aluminum.
Most people make this slight error - you’re correct that the extra 20bhp was added with the GTB and GTS (as well as most Spiders but not early Spiders which were still 300BHP) but the vast majority of the updates particularly those effecting handling were not introduced with the GTB/GTS, they were changed on the production line in November 1991 so later 1992 and 1993 registered 348 TB/TS have them. You can identify which TB and TS cars have the suspension updates by looking at the rear suspension ‘towers’ in the engine bay, early cars have 4 bolts on top of the towers, updated cars have 6. They obviously did other things to help handling such as moving the battery up front, again in late 1991.
@@petei3972 you are right and thanks for the details but i was highlighting the comparison between the 348 GTB and the 348 GTC which have identical power; the later 348TS with corrected handling came in 92/93 but at the end of 93 the GTB/GTS was on sale and added the extra hp, not due to the exhaust as stated in the video but due to intake plenum differences. I see plenty of 348TS on sale but I hardly ever see a GTB for sale and i do not like them in red or yellow or black but that is my preference; the current GTC prices are very silly now when just few years ago they were relatively affordable because i saw one when i was not in the market for one at less than a 355. dealers buy from other dealers it seems.

@@tdolan500 Maybe biased but have to agree. Both are good but to me the 355 sounds best with a Capristo, the 348 sounds better with a Tubi. Both sound good on both though. I used to have a Nouvalari Supersport on my 348, sounded pretty good but was simply too loud. Quality of sound though the Tubi is far better.
I’m with Chris, not a fan of the sound of most FPC engines, although a 355 with a proper exhaust is had a fabulous sound but mostly F430 onwards were just ok in stock form
@@petei3972 Why not Ansa which were not standard on the 348 and 355 from new? Ansa still produced sports exhausts then for those cars and have a unique sound.
The 348 always got slated , but i personally think there a pretty car .
If you added 150hp and cut the mufflers off youd have the ultimate street car.
I think it already is...
That era of Ferrari was when they were at their peak, design wise. The 308, Testarossa, F40, 348, 355 all look incredible to this day.
Nice video, very very pretty car, great sounding engine, all in all a great commercial, bet they get lots of customers from Cris's videos. Those old Pirellis will kill you on a wet road though...😂
And the weight reduction seems off just as most of you said, should be lbs😅
Glad you enjoyed!
That oil light is worrying on 4:44. Hope that its only because keys are on ignition on first step and all lights are illuminated. Reminds me when I bought my Lancia Thema and drove it from Finnish MOT and 50km after engine blow, second crankshaft bearing went and that was it.
Seeing as it's reading zero oil pressure I'd imagine the engine is off
I had a '93 348 GTS. Really really good, even when pushing hard on alpine passes. ❤
Wow. Quite the find. It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.
I’ve been on the 348 wagon for years!!!! Such a lovely car when you realize that speed isn’t everything. All 80s and 90s cars are slow by today’s standards, and the new stuff is no more enjoyable for it.
Lee on the Solent ! Great location. Did you go in the penguin cafe ?
Never knew it existed - awesome!
1180kgs with a manual v8 that’s epic.
The trouble with them being so rare is there is only one real mechanical specialist left who can service these correctly, and he lives on the dark side of Ganymede!
rumors said that really there is no 200 kg difference in weight between GTC and GTB 348. more like 80-90 kg. Who had a chance to prove it?
I love the seats and the wheels! It looks like a riot to drive 🤘🔥
Lovely car, maybe not the best roads around Lee-on-the-Solent to show it off on 😂
Someone needs to make a modern vehicle inspired by the look of this.
@@RacerXGTO haha yep I forgot about that.
It was 200lbs lighter not kgs
Really enjoyed this podcast… normally I would avoid car films like the plague, but the pair of you have convinced me to put my grumpy old man prejudice to one side and give the Ferrari film a go…and maybe a couple of others! *braces for unnecessary downchanges*
Stunning car!
Chris with the beanie and beard looks like a Sardarji uncle ❤😂
Wait did he say these gen v8s sound bad? That's mad. These are the best sounding Ferrari v8s. The 355's 40v especially.
I'm looking forward to this! My 348s on diet too at 55kg so far, not sure how that model got to that 190kg figure.
Took the engine out maybe? 😂
That number is baloney.
🇮🇹 200kg is like 20kg in the real world.
Collecting Cars need some sort of weight sensing device that accurately determines the weight of both this car and a standard one
The 200 kg figure is incorrect. It was 90 kg from the factory.
I still want a 355 one day. Its the last truly gorgeous baby ferrari
That's Lee-on-Solent!
It looked familiar and I loved to visit the chippy there nice place!
Looks like a nice place
Lovely South Coast day - big up Dorset 🤙🏼
This was Hampshire, Lee On Solent.
@robbs808 Thanks! I thought it was looking out towards portland .. but makes sense how the island is so close.
Big up Hampshire! I should have really known .. I used to be the ice cream man down the waterfront brasserie
Id just enjoy being that guy who'd be constantly saying "competizione" at every opportunity 😂
Yep, i bought 1 years ago, for wait for it........16k. No-one wanted it because of a 5p sized rust bubble on the sill. It was a long time ago and I didn't really appreciate it for what it was. Not my daftest move selling it for a slight profit, but deffo top 5
I would love to own a car like that beautiful design great engine and most important it's a time capsule on wheels
Chris is really quite a good salesman 😮
Chris you sir are one of Britain national treasures. Love you mate. Never change.
Driven unbelievably tamely.
Wish I knew that you were in Lee Chris. Would have bought you a pint!!!
Soon as I saw that shot on the road, I was like I recognise that S bend, that's Lee on Solent, would've been cool to see him driving that around here.
550 WSR 33 total production, 23LHD and 10 RHD.
Short overhangs? Must be 1 meter in the front
Indeed, overhang is comparatively huge
Dog leg sounds better than PDK, DSG, or twin clutch whatever
How on earth are there no squeaks or rattles on an older Ferrari that had 200 kg taken out from the factory?? Mind blowing
I think its modern equivalent is the pretty 458. That will age well unlike the Enzo, F50, California, Purosaggy, 296, F430, 612 and the slightly awkward 360.
Was this filmed at Lee-on-Solent Chris? I’ve just finished reading your book 😁
These videos should be bigger.
California’s got manual gearboxes as optional
Tho not mid engine v8
Pretty thing, analogue loveliness. More RM Williams over Boss. I really like it, even in 348 base trim looked after like this beauty.
