Mr. Lang is one of the greatest of all time. What sets him apart from many of his contemporaries is his foot control. He is probably the best of all my favorites in the foot department...... Weckl, Chambers, Grebb, Harrison......... all great but I don't think they have the control Mr. Lang does. Mr. Lang is very different in that he has all the hand and timing of the greats but he has the foot ability of a great double-bass rock drummer and he can translate hand patterns to his feet. Not even sure if my brain comprehends it all. I do enjoy his playing and if I had to live my life over I would dedicate a lot more time to my music. I'm good, but I'm not Lang good. Uggggg.

I really love the verse beat he does to open the song! It's both unique and awesome. I'll be honest, it's really not so hard, when you break it down. I'll be honest again, I DON'T HAVE my left foot up to speed, but my hands are there. I'm up to 75 bpm with everything. To be clear, I'm NOT comparing myself to Thomas Lang, I'm just pointing out that the opening groove/verse section is VERY possible. For those of us who don't have the same setup as Thomas, you can simulate the rata tom with a high tom and the gong drum with a floor tom. :) It's really fun once you get it! \m/

Yea been my thoughts for years. He’s so capable but I cant get into any of the music he does. He’s known for being so technical but it seems wasted on most of the music he does in studio for $$$. I dont see why he cant get with a super group or do a Liquid Tension Experiment style album of his own with some heavy hitters. He’s a drummer favorite but its only solos people listen to.

Wow that is some incrediblly played and creative music. Would be interested to know, with the cool double bass pattern from 0:54 that's repeated a few times, is it deilberately played quite loose & open to accentuate the snare backbeat and the louder bass drum hits that make up their own ostinato (I believe on the 1 and e of beat one, and the e and & of beat 2 but probably wrong about the second one, would have to listen quite carefully a number of times to get all those little nuances). I listen to a lot of metal stuff with drummers like Matt Gartska and Tomas Haake doing complex double bass patterns but they all tend to keep the bass drum hits at the same volume so it's really cool to hear this music with those dynamics applied to make what could otherwise be a modern metal double bass groove more proggy and interesting.
I'm amazed by the skill of the footwork and independance going on, must take a huge amount of practice. I've been playing the latin foot pattern enough that I can put a lot of hand patterns over it as my body has that muscle memory for that foot pattern now, same with simple walking pattern. But as soon as I try a foot pattern I haven't played before (especially a syncopated one) I find it tricky to add in hands but stuff like this video does provide inspiration to keep practicing!
I wonder what the approach is for writing the songs on this album, in the context of an album made by a top drummer, whether the percussion part is come up with first and then the other instrument parts are fit to that. I'm definitely going to be listening to the rest of the album after watching this!
