- In this video, I reveal a secret feature in Adobe Captivate Classic multi-state objects. These enhanced objects give you the ability to add additional objects within the states themselves. Using this trick will make your multi-state object-based interactions wow your learners. Members of my TH-cam channel can download the project file for this video from the community tab.

Thank you for all your fab videos. Is there a way to find out what state an object is in?
The next release of Adobe Captivate will allow you to set actions based on the state of objects, but presently I keep track of what state an object is by assigning values to variables associated with that object.
Hi Paul, thanks for your videos. I am new to captivate and your tutorials have taught me so much. What I am trying to fathom now, I don't know if it can be done or not but I am trying to create a drag and drop question with audio assigned to the drag options. Thank you.
Hi Joanne, this can be done but you would want to write an advanced action that is triggered from the Actions of each drag and drop. I would be careful to include the action Stop Triggered Audio in the advanced action to make sure you don't get two or more audio files playing simultaneously.
@@CaptivateTeacher That's great thank you! I'll have a 'play'. I discovered the stop triggered audio in one of your other videos which was great - French, Russian and Japanese talking over each other was quite an assault on the ears!
@@joannejones4084 That's great. Don't forget that if you get stuck, I do offer one-on-one training or consultation. The link is in the description of each video.
@@CaptivateTeacher Super, thanks.
You're welcome.
Hello Paul, and thanks for this video. I have a question, can I add more state to each options? Can I have more information to each option. The viewer have to go through all of option one before getting to option two.
I don’t see why not but you need some way of accessing those additional states. Buttons like the ones in the video take up valuable screen real estate. If I have more than just a few pages of content I might switch to a content carousel.
Excellent!! I had a crash project and needed something fast and cool. This works!!! ahh I was dreading advanced variables...hahahaa!!THANKSSSS
You're welcome Zindie Nyirenda, and thanks for watching.
Hello Paul !...
Thanks for this new video !...
I just want to add that you don't need to "Exit State" and open a new one, to copy the "chevron" on the other buttons...
On the top left side "States of :" you can change directly the multi-states object that you want !...
I'm sure you have noticed that already !...
Stay safe and big thanks again !...
Thanks for the info!
Paul, your videos rock! Thank you so much for making all of these.

Silly question: when I click on a new button, the multi-state of the previous button clicked doesn't revert back to its normal/default state. How do I make it so when a user clicks on the next button the other buttons revert back to default?
You would need to include that function with a custom state for your buttons and an advanced action. If you still have trouble with this, you can purchase some one-on-one time with me, and I can review it with you. bit.ly/Cp1on1
Hi, How do I unlock the state?
You cannot unlock the rollover, down, and visited states of a object used as a button. Same is true for other inbuild states like the ones used for drag and drop.
Hi paul may i know how did you link the button with the text ?or did you do the video before about it ...thanks
When you select an object and use it as a button you will see a tab called *Actions* that appears. Within that tab there is an action for *On Success* where you can perform any number of tasks. For example show something that was previously hidden, change the state of the related object to display text or in this case run an *Advanced Action* that performs a variety of actions. Watch some of my other videos on hiding a next button until learners have done something else to see a few ways that you can do this.
Hello Paul. Thank you for your videos. I am a novice in Captivate and have learned a lot. I have an idea to a slide in my project and looked at all tutorials for an example on how to add a multistate or advance action to Flow Charts. What I want to do is have a flow chart of our process where the student can click each flow chart box and it takes them to a new slide or state with information and audio explanations. Can you do a tutorial video like that? I just need a little help getting it started. Thank you, Victor
You could use any of the standard workflows for click to reveal single slide or click to reveals across multiple slides. The only difference is that learners would be clicking on elements that make up the flow chart instead of a some kind of button.
Thank you Paul for being Awesome,
In one of the previous videos "Pizza topping" where this was implemented, there is something that I observed,
The user can click the same button thrice and click next to advance and not necessarily choose three different pizza toppings,
Is there a way to disable re-clicking the same button again while staying the button in the 'clicked' state as per this video?
Thanks again,
I guess you could disable the buttons as part of the advanced action as you click them. One extra line of script.
@@CaptivateTeacher Thank you!
You're welcome.
Thanks for continuing the videos. I'm new(ish?) to Captivate and they've helped speed up my dev time. Near the end of this video, you mentioned "forced navigation" and the ability to not display the "next" button until all the interactions are complete. Do you have a video that explains how to build that into a slide? If not, perhaps that can be a subject for an upcoming video?

Hi Paul thank you so much for the tutorials and your explanations. what is the script you used to change the color of the objects when the cursor hovers over them?
No need to write a script. Rollover and down states are automatic in buttons. You just need to visit the state view and select the different colours you wish to use.
Hi Paul! What about changing the multi state of images, not objects? I know there is a way that you have to unlock them in order to change the color but I can't seem to figure out how. Example: I want a different color to show for the image I've made into a button within the visited state but it's locked. Any help?
So if the image is the primary object of a multistate object you can create a new state and either edit the image using the Edit Image button to edit things like Brightness, Sharpness, Invert Colors and so on. You can even replace the image with another image if you so want (click on the image name button in the Properties Inspector). In the case of images used as buttons, you can't change the position of the Rollover, Down and Visited states but you can edit the image or replace the image with an alternative image.
@@CaptivateTeacher thank you! I did find that I can't unlock the image within the visited state but I can just add the new one over. Because it was locked, it was not allowing me to edit the color, etc.
@@dwyergerrity7487 What do you mean unlock? do you want to move it to another position or size? Perhaps tell me what you want to do in non-technical terms and perhaps I can point you in the right direction.
@@CaptivateTeacher Thanks! So when you make a button out of an image (not a shape in captivate), it locks the other states of it, including the visited state. The only way to change the color of the other states, then, is to add the shape in the color wanted to the visited state. It will not allow you to unlock the the other states of the image.
@@dwyergerrity7487 Okay, so I thought perhaps I was losing my mind. I just added an image to my slide. I selected the use as a button option and clicked on State View. I selected the RollOver state and I can select the [image name] button and can replace the image with an alternative image, or I can click on Edit Image and change other details of the image like increase the brightness, convert it to grayscale, invert colour and other options. The only thing that is not available is to change the size and position from the Options tab of the additional states of the image. I'm not sure what you mean by adding a shape in the colour wanted. You certainly can add additional objects to the multiple states but perhaps I can point you in the right direction if instead of describing your technical elements instead could you tell me in simple laypersons terms what you want to accomplish. I'm sorry for being confused.
Hi Paul, I'm still struggling with my export project. Correct me if I am wrong but the .exe project is not readable on Win 10, up to Win 7 only. Could wait for updates in the near future? The other problem is that only Firefox is suitable to run my project, with Edge or Chrome, it takes a while to appear and some parts are missing and I have no idea why. The last issue is PDF. Maybe I am totally wrong, but my MP4 are not compatible with Acrobate Reader (latest version) and I tested to convert my MP4 (interactive video) to flash format and it worked well. Adobe support suggested that I update my flash application, which failed once again. I thought that when you export your project to PDF, it will convert everything necessary to be readable in Acrobate Reader, but this is obviously not the case. I also tried to offer my partners an overview of my project via the Adobe online platform but my file is too large to be exported (around 2GB, mainly because of the MP4 I inserted). So, what I said to my partners is to open my file which I shared via Wetransfer using Firefox and which we will see later how to implement the final project on the company's server. Do my thoughts make sense to you? Best Xavier
Let me explain what the EXE project is. Publishing to EXE creates a single file that contains the SWF version of your course packaged with a portable version of Adobe Flash player. With the demise of Flash player and all things Flash, I would not use this method of publishing, even if it's just for review purposes. I also wouldn't expect Adobe to update this feature in the future. I would suggest that Adobe will very likely deprecate this feature by the next release of Adobe Captivate.
I really can't comment on what the reasons could be that your course isn't working in anything other than Firefox. I already know there are inconsistencies in how each browser deals with certain things. At this stage, I am always running the HTML5 Tracker found in the Project dropdown menu and then only publishing for HTML5.
Like EXE projects, the PDF publish is just an SWF version of your project packaged in a PDF file. The ability to have Flash content play in a PDF was available for a limited number of versions of Adobe Reader (I'm sorry I don't recall the versions). Adobe has now deprecated the ability to play flash content in a PDF.
My advice moving forward is to sign up for an eLearning review service like reviewmyelearning.com and not publish to flash at all. Review my eLearning has a comprehensive tool that allows you to gather feedback and know precisely where it came from and what part of your course the feedback is related. I have a video on the tool if you're interested. th-cam.com/video/tFAxIAdISJM/w-d-xo.html
@@CaptivateTeacher Thanks a lot Paul, very helpful, as usual. Xavier (from Belgium)
Hello Paul!
Thanks for the simulation videos you had created earlier.
I'm having a problem with software simulation. I have seen your videos about simulation and did exactly same. Everything captured except text entry boxes. I have Captivate 9 2019 release. Once got the text entry boxes but now I cannot. It gives me a Select Box. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you in advance.
Are you capturing on your primary monitor or a secondary monitor? Secondary monitors can be a problem when capturing software sims.
@@CaptivateTeacher I'm capturing on laptop. There is no secondary monitor. I'm using windows 10 64 bit.
Captivate sometimes has trouble with certain applications, especially if they use custom interfaces. Not much I can do to help you. Have your reached out to Adobe for technical support? They are usually quite good at helping out. There is a link in the description of the video to reach them.
