Hi Paul, I can't thank you enough for all of the free content you put out on TH-cam. It's incredible how much I've been able to advance my skills in less than a year and it's all thanks to you.
Thank you! I am fairly new to Captivate and getting ready to take the Adobe Captivate Specialist exam. I am creating a custom lesson for my institution now though, so your video are wonderfully helpful. Subscribed already!
Thank you so much Paul, this was most helpful! I had most of it in the right place, only I was missing the IF x is greater than 0, with the show next on button action. This was the perfect example for what I needed. Happily subscribed.
Thank you, Paul! You're a life saver. Just from watching you do your thing, I've learned so much (I didn't know multi-state objects existed, how to use advanced actions, Captivate best practice). Love these mini workflow videos.
Hi Paul. Thanks again for your valued in-depth response. Reaching out to Adobe as suggested. In the meantime, is it possible to only display the next button once the user has hovered over all of the hover areas I have created on screen. I used the Hint option to create hovers. I want ensure the learner has hovered over all the indicated areas I have incorporated ion the screen. Once they have hovered over all of them the next button should appear. I would like to achieve this without using variables. I don not know if this is possible. But thanks again for your help.
Not possible to track without variables and a hover cannot trigger an advanced action. Keep in mind that hover effects are not considered the best way to have an interaction because of this but also because it excludes being used on devices that don't use a mouse like smartphones and tablets. Better to use click to reveals.
@@CaptivateTeacher Hi Paul. Thanks for your in-depth response. I seem to have so much to learn about this tool. Really appreciate your help. Keep up the good work.
SHASHI KUMAR you create variables by clicking Project > Variables > Add New. Choose a name for your variable, an initial value and optional description. I show this at 3:56 or so in the video.
@@CaptivateTeacher Thanks, but I am facing an issue here. While following the steps given in the video, I have done exactly the same as shown, but the forward arrow does not appear after clicking all the buttons in my slide rather, it appear after 15 seconds which I have mentioned under TIMING properties for the forward arrow. can you please advice if the arrow is not appearing because of the TIMING properties or something else?
Ah enjoyed this video you made me understand advanced actions so much easier than I as being shown. I am new to Captivate so I will be following your Captivate tutorials for sure thank you so much!
you're welcome. If you haven't already done so, please help me get to the next milestone and subscribe to my channel. Also, if you turn on notifications, you'll be alerted when I come out with something new.
@@CaptivateTeacher That would be great, I have tried merging to separate advanced actions and variables but I’m just not that good…I’ll look out for the notification…
Hi Paul. I'm watching all your videos now. Can you also make a video on how to create a crossword puzzle. I think it's better when you're the one who create it.
I appreciate the compliment, but it is doubtful I will be making any more videos on Adobe Captivate Classic. I'm focusing all my videos on the All-new Adobe Captivate.
This is a great tutorial. Thanks. Please tell me if you have an updated version relating to Captivate 2020 or is it still the same process? Keep up the good work.

Hi Paul, thanks that was quite helpful in how to make concise advanced actions. If you have not done a video on using Shared Actions yet, people may find this insightful. I have 2 queries for your consideration: 1. Making a single custom Play/Pause button which functions like the one on the Playbar, which shows the "pause" icon while the slide is playing, and then changes to the "play" icon at the end of a slide (where there is a pause point). 2.An older problem: If there is a retake and review button on the quiz results page, when the user fails the quiz and then reviews the quiz, the retake button disappears. I normally put the review button on top of the retake button, as they are the same size - however this may not always be the case. One may not necessarily also want to go to another slide which has one button to counteract this anomaly, do you have any suggestions for this? For question 2 I would have though the logic for Captivate would have been a checkbox option in Preferences > Pass or Fail > If Failing Grade - to say "Hide Review Button". Your vid "Change the Buttons on the Quiz Results Slide" does explain your viewpoint on the review button so I understand how you feel about it though.
I’ve only used shared actions a handful of times. I certainly see their benefits but I’ve also seen how if you don’t properly label and set them up just right, you can waste as much time tweaking them as the time they save. I’d like to get a bit more proficient with their use before I make a video. It would be a topic I would want to get right. I also believe that there is a time to use them and there is a time where they may not be applicable as well. With regards to your first inquiry, I have contemplated this one a few times. My current solution only accounts for the user clicking on the button to change its appearance through a multi-state object. I haven’t dedicated much time to it as I haven’t had much need for my own *Play/Pause*. Here is what I would suggest…. I would explore the possibility of setting up your *pause* and *continue* actions through *advanced actions*. This way, just before the pause you could also *Change State of* your multi-state *Play/Pause*. I think that might work. _Hmmm…maybe I will do a video on this idea_. I haven’t explored it because I’m swamped right now finishing some work for clients and getting ready for *DEVLEARN 2016*, but let me if you try this approach and it works. Alternatively you may want to download one of the templates from the *eLearning Brothers*. I know they have several navigation templates. You could look at their *advanced actions* and see if their solution accounts for this. I just now became aware of the second issue. You see, as you pointed out, I’m not a fan of allowing users to simply review a final test so they can turn around and pass the test through memorization. I want my learners to come to their knowledge through discovery and proper learning, _but hey, that’s just me_. I’m not sure if this is a bug or just the way Adobe has setup this set of features to work. I would submit it as a feature request or report it as a bug (_whichever you think it is_) through the *Adobe eLearning Community*: elearning.adobe.com/ Look for the green button labelled *Bug/Feature Request* on the right hand side of the page.
I'm using Multi State Objects. In this case the first state, or the normal state is just a transparent shape without any text. Pressing the buttons changes that object to display the various alternative states where the same object contains text.

Hi Paul, thanks for all your content! It's been a huge help as I'm learning Adobe Captivate 2019, release 11.8.0.586. I recently used this video to help me create a click to reveal slide with a hidden next button that appears after all buttons have been clicked. It worked perfectly! My question - can I do two click to reveal slides in the same project? I'm assuming I just need to create new advanced actions to execute but, what's throwing me off, is that I copied from my original project. Even though I renamed the buttons, the advanced actions on that new, pasted slide still works. The 2nd, pasted slide does not work. I thought I'd ask before going too far down the rabbit hole. Thanks for your help! UPDATE: I found your video about duplicating slides with advanced actions and variables and have since made two click to reveal slides that work. I did not rename any objects this time, and I noticed that my variables copied this time! I'm assuming the changed object names from my first try are what stopped me? I'm now working on creating a slide with flip buttons and hoping to utilize this video to keep my NEXT button from showing up, though I'm not sure how all those shared actions are going to work with flipping AND a next button.
The key is not to duplicate but to copy your slide that's working to a new project. No need to relabel everything as Captivate will do this for you, and then simply copy and paste it into the target project. Not only will your variables, advanced actions, and objects get relabeled to maintain uniqueness but everything will work fine. If you still have trouble with this, you can purchase some one-on-one time with me, and I can review it with you. bit.ly/Cp1on1
Hi Mr Paul. Congrats. I think you are doing a gret job sharing your knowlege whit us, the teachers that want to do a better job. I have a little question for you. What should I do, if I want to use only the Back and Next buttons into one slide, to show, for example 3 texts captions?. Greetings from Colombia.
I have tried to find a solution for that case, creating a variable named "Cont" that is incremented by 1 when the Next arrow button is activated. "Cont" is in 3 decision statements. In each decision I use the conditional "If" like this: 1. For the first decision (first text caption): If (Cont ==1) Then (Cont = Cont +1; Show TextCaption1; Hide TextCaption2; Hide TextCaption3). 2. For the Second decision (second text caption): If (Cont ==2) Then (Cont = Cont +1; Show TextCaption2; Hide TextCaption1; Hide TextCaption3). 3. For the third decision ( third text caption): If (Cont >=3) Then (Cont = 3; Show TextCaption3; Hide TextCaption1; Hide TextCaption2). The issue is: When I click for first time on the Next Arrow Button, "Cont" counts untill 3 and does not capture the event when I click on the button for second time. Thanks Teacher.
Thank you for your compliments on my videos. It’s always nice to hear such positive feedback. I’m not sure I completely understand your question. Can you rephrase it or perhaps write it in Spanish and I will see if I can translate it.
I keep trying to follow the instructions in your video, but captivate has gray'd out the "Change State of" option in the Advanced Actions. How do I fix this?
Hi Paul, I am new to Captivate and I am learning a lot with your videos, thank you for that. I am creating a slide in which the user has to click four buttons first (each one redirects them to a website) before click next, I create the variables and the advance actions but I can link the buttons to that actions. Please help!!! How did you create the multistate buttons? Thank you in advance

Hey Paul, quick question. When I create my advanced action, following what you demo in the video, I run into an issue. When I save the advanced action, it saves, and I get the script updated box. Captivate then automatically deletes the variable (button name) from the increment command line in both the IF box and ELSE box which renders the action useless. Why does this keep happening? What am I missing? For full transparency, my advanced action contains the following actions: Jump to Slide, Change State Of, Show and Increment. Do I have a fatal combination here that keeps deleting the variable for the Increment command?
I'm not sure what's happening in your specific case, but if you delete an object that is referenced in your advanced action, you will likely break any references to those objects. If you need help troubleshooting this and other issues you can reach out to adobe through captivatehelp@adobe.com.

Paul: I love your tutorials. In fact this one was the perfect solution to a course I'm working on currently. Where you have 5 states, I have 7, but otherwise the circumstances are almost exactly the same. My additional question now is this: I have audio (narration) attached to each state as well as on the launch slide. How do I keep users from clicking the "state change" buttons until the audio on the launch slide is completed? My tests allow both the new state audio and original launch slide video to play at the same time. I don't have enough experience with scripting to figure this one out myself. UPDATE: I found your tutorial on multistate audio. I am using the stop slide audio check box now. However I turned off all my button pauses in the timeline because that is how yours look in that second tutorial. It isn't quite what I want as now I have to run the slide length out forever to keep it from auto advancing to the next one. I'm a little afraid to do much more experimenting at this point. I am in dire need of advice! (Captivate 2017) Adrianne
My rule of thumb with pause points is to have them on items that would take you to another slide, such as a back button, but keep all the buttons that change the states of another object on your side without pauses. You have to remember that buttons with pauses can also continue playing a slide when pressed so no pause means no unpause. You could write an advanced action that is run on entry that first *disables* the click to reveal buttons. Then *Delay Next Action by* X seconds and then *enable* the buttons. So even if they click, nothing happens until the audio is finished. Might anger your learners though, especially if they arrive on the slide a second time to review the material. Forced navigation is often requested by our stakeholders but whenever possible I prefer to allow my learners to be autonomous and self directed.
@@CaptivateTeacher So - your solution for the audio was perfect - I managed to script it properly on the first try. Now my only remaining issue is the pause problem. I think there is something about pause that is escaping my understanding. In my original email, I mentioned that I had to set the slide length ridiculously long to keep the auto advance from happening before my reader could get through all 7 states. I have the pause on the Next button set shortly after the conditions are all met to show the Next button but it doesn't pause. Should I be setting the pause out later? What is best practice?
The slide might have played past the pause point by the time you make the Next button appear. Put the pause on the back button or if there isn't a back button, I will sometimes place a click box somewhere on the slide, small and invisible with no action so the likelihood of someone clicking it is next to impossible. Then you slide only needs to be as long as it needs to be. Keep the pause on the Next button though. Once it's visible you still want the Next button to wait until the learner clicks it.
@@CaptivateTeacher AHA - thanks! I saw that tutorial where you made the little tiny, invisible button. Now I understand. Thank you again! I'm sure we'll chat again. The learning curve on Captivate is not impossible, but it's pretty steep.
Hi Paul! Your channel has helped me a lot in the course I am developing. I did what you showed in this video and it works great for one slide. I am developing a longer course and I created a next button in the first slide and in timing, I picked “rest of project”. On my second slide, I want the user to click on all the other buttons before the next button appears (just like what you did in this video), however, I can’t add that advanced action on the second slide, I can only add it on the first. My question is, how can I hide a next button I created on the first slide and used rest of project on, on the rest of the slides?
I have followed all steps shown in the video (i believe) and when i click my last button, the next arrow appears just as it should - however, it is not clickable as it should be (and yes, I have the "use as button" checked).. is there some trick I am missing to make my next arrow work as it should once it appears?
Hi Paul, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I applied this in my project and uploaded in in my LMS. However, everytime I close this project the button that's the users should visit are still in visited state but the hidden next button is hiddne again. Any ideas why this could be?
You would need an on-enter action that checks your tracking variables (variables are maintained across sessions) and sets the slide based on those values.
Hi Paul and thanks for a great tutorial! I now understand the concepts of variables and Advanced Actions much better. I however have a problem: I have a Next-button on the master page of the Captivate-template that I am using and this button is automatically displayed after 3 seconds on each slide. I've tried to override this button by placing a Next-button of my own on the slide where the customer has asked that the user should click through 8 buttons before being able to click next, but so far I haven't been successful... Do you have any suggestions as to how I could solve this?
Personally I'm not a fan of forced delayed navigation but I recognize that this is something stakeholders want, as you can see in this video. How I achieve this is based on the content on the slide. If I'm building a non interactive slide when content is merely animated on the slide, I will place my navigation objects toward the end of each slide but on a slide by slides basis. Persistent buttons like my Previous slide button I would put on the Master Slides but not a Next slide button.
Hey Paul - I have a few courses with a similar setup on a few slides. For some reason, the next button visibility doesn't persist when the course is reloaded. In other words, if I close the course without completing it, relaunch it, and navigate to a slide that had the next button shown previously, it is no longer visible and I have to review all the content again. Have you found any methods for maintaining the visibility of the shape/button when the user reopens the course?
In instances where you expect learners to exit and relaunch your elearning, you will need to add an advanced action to the On Enter action of your slide. This advanced action will check the value of the variables used for this type of slide. If the values indicate that the user has already clicked all the items, you can show the Next button.
@@kflopilot Yes, visibility and object states aren't retained across sessions but variables are. If you check the values of the variables it should allow you to update easily on slide enter.

Next button is disable only. Tried remaking it multipe times but facing the same issue again and again. please help

Hi Paul: I'm wondering if you could help me figure out an issue I have with hiding the next button on two slides in a Compliance course I am working on. The content owners for this training do not want users to skip the slides that contain links to two external videos. NOTE: I cannot embed the videos in the course; I can only link to them. Is there a way or an advanced action that can be created to prevent users from clicking the Next button before they have watched the external videos? Because the videos are outside the course, perhaps, there is no way I can prevent this. I have watched a few of your "hide next button" videos that use advanced actions and change state of, etc., but haven't found a tutorial that would help with this. Any advice or feedback would be great!
The best you can do is make the button click to the video mandatory before displaying the next button. There is no way you can be sure if they have actually watched an external video. Even if you ran a time delay equal to the length of the video, which I wouldn't recommend, there is still no guarantee that Joe employee isn't just texting with his girlfriend.
I was afraid you were going to say that! I was hoping to use an advanced action on the enter slide action to show/hide the playbar until all the variables were touched. The action I built hides the playbar just fine upon entering the slide, but I haven't had any luck getting it to show back up and I'm 85% sure my variables and actions are set up correctly. :(
hmmm. That's an interesting thought. If on slide enter you Assign cpCmndShowPlaybar with a literal value of "0" and made your resulting action of your advanced action to Assign it a value of 1 once you have satisfied all your requirements then it should work. This is really good. I never thought of doing that way before. Might be worth a video tutorial if you don't mind me trying that.
Paul - This tutorial was tremendous, and worked perfectly every time I applied it to my Captivate projects. Just one question. When I make a slide and there is only ONE button, and I need the user to click that one button before the custom "next" button appears, it doesn't work. What normally happens is either the next button doesn't show up, OR you have to click the button twice in order for the next button to appear. Any idea why? It only happens when there is one item to click on per slide. If there are 2 or more, it works perfectly! Thanks in advance, great tutorials!!
If you only have one button you would not need a conditional action. Create a standard action to display the Next button and perform whatever action you want the first button to perform.
Already done! And actually, I do have one more question regarding this tutorial. I fI have a slide that utilizes the drag and drop wizard, is it possible to make the next button hidden until the user does the drag and drop correctly and hits submit?
Ask your question on Monday's Live Stream and I would be happy to demonstrate how this is done. Here is the link for 2 PM EST. If you click the link now you can set a reminder. th-cam.com/video/74k063wQA6c/w-d-xo.html
Paul, I have watched this twice and need to simply hide a button only to be shown upon returning to the slide. There are two other buttons on the slide that jump to other slides, but both those sequences are linked back to this slide. I don't want the button to be seen the first time they come to this slide, but I do want it shown when they come back a second, third, or so on time. Is there a script out there you can point to? Thanks!
Hi Paul, I m new in captivate 2017 and your videos are very useful to me. I ´ve a question : how can I hide the next button of a slide that has a video ( inside a fluid box) until the video finishes. I want to be sure that my students have seen all the video before going to next slide. Is there a way to do it ? Thanks a lot . Gemma
Hi, Paul - this was very helpful! However, I also have audio attached to each button/state. I tried adding Play audio and a Pause to the Else Actions. But, for some reason, it will not play the audio for all 5 buttons. Then, I tried adding the audio to the states, instead. But, then the Pause doesn't work for all buttons and it. Is there a more consistent way to attach and play the audio files?
Hi Paul - Is there a video that shows you add the text once you click the box? Also once a box is selected, is there a way to change the color so that user knows which sections they have completed? Does that make sense? Sorry new captivate user here....
"Add the text once you click the box?"...what I'm missing is the context I think. The second part of the question might be addressed with this video: th-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=e9gyDAN1DGA
Sorry I wasn't very clear :-/ In your above video, all that we can see on the screen at first is the buttons, not the text that will appear once the button is clicked. Do you have the background arranged over the text boxes? I'm working on a project where the learner will see several boxes and will need to hit each button to learn more about what those boxes represent. Hope that helps explain myself better!
The buttons in this interaction trigger one of the several states within a multi-state object. Each state contains a different description that explains that example. The default state or "Normal" state is completely blank. On enter of the slide, you see no text. Once you press a button the multi-state object is changed to the corresponding state that contains the description needed to be displayed.
Hi Patty, It's hard for me to know what might be happening in this case. I would recommend that you follow the procedure again. Hi Paul, how do you force navigation such that the user cannot view nor click on later slides unless they have visited the previous slides? I am trying to achieve this functionality in Captivate v8 and have tried replicating many suggestions I've found online. Would appreciate your advice. Many thanks.
Good Day, I am working on a Demo for a government agency. I have been able to do the "Hide/Show" Next button, no problem. I am pretty knowledgable about Storyline and was able to pick up these advanced actions fairly quickly with the help of your videos. My problem is that when i go through the HTML5 preview, even if I click the area where the hidden next button is located, it still goes to the next slide. I found this out because the first half of my template has no actions, so I was just clicking Next to get to the slide i wanted to test. hOWEVER, when I clicked, by accident, the area where the 'hidden' next button is located on an advanced action slide, it still advanced to the next slide. Is it maybe because I am using an actual button then a smartshape? Not really sure what I am dong wrong. I even tried Enable vs. Disable, Different States, etc. but everytime I click the area where the 'hidden' button is located, it advances.. Any suggestions? i know the gov't wants the student to select all advanced actions (Tabs, etc.) before advancing through. This may just be a clitch we have to work with and hope notbody 'accidently' selects that area. I will continue to do research, but any pointing me in the proper direction would be appreciated. Thanks.
Actual buttons are a holdover from earlier versions of Captivate. I would recommend that you use smart shapes or images as buttons. If you still have trouble with this, you can purchase some one-on-one time with me, and I can review it with you. bit.ly/Cp1on1
@@CaptivateTeacher Version we have is 11.5.1.499. I will talk to our management to see if we can update. Updating software can only be done by IT, which can take days, if not weeks. I am going to try some other ways. I currently have it so each Tab, hotspot, etc has an a variable/advanced action (Conditional (If/Else) where I increment the tab by 1 and it only shows the Next button if all tabs are not equal to 0). This works fine as far as showing the button, but as I stated if you click in the area where the Next button is located, even if it isn't showing, it still advances the slide. I know Storyline has disabled states, but not sure if Captivate does. I am gong to try several other methods to see if I can lock the navigation Thanks.
What I have found is that if the reason for the update is because it has a cool new feature they will be slow to update you, however if you claim that the software contains bugs and possible security holes they will patch it much more quickly.
Hey Paul, I create an e-learning course for my master thesis and your videos help me a lot. But in this case it is not workig... and I don't know why. Tried 2 hours to find the mistake. I created the advanced action as in the video. But the Next-Button (Weiter) stays hidden (also all the texts have bee clicked at) and canot be clicked at all. Is there something I should check? Regards Jen
As you can imagine this is difficult for me to troubleshoot in the content of my TH-cam channel. Maybe try recreating the project in a new project and if you get it right you can copy it into your thesis project.
Hey there Paul, Thank you so much for all the videos you create! I'm currently working on a course that has an animation of a card flipping to the back when the user clicks on it (learned the animation effect from one of your videos btw). The slide is designed to prompt users to click on all cards to see the information on the back before proceeding to the next slide. I'm having difficulty with the automatic advancement though so I wanted to reach out to seek your expertise with this. Currently each card has an advanced action for the animation. Would the best solution in this case be to create 2 separate advanced actions for each card? I had originally had the advanced action for the advancement on the slide itself but it doesn't appear to be working. I'm still so new with Captivate so I apologize if there's an easier fix for this! Any direction or help would be so greatly appreciated. :) -Madison
On each advanced action use a variable to track which items have been click. For example Assign v_Button1 with the literal value of 1. Create a second tab on all your advanced actions that checks if v_button1, 2 , 3, etc are equal to 1 and then display the Next button to allow them to more forward.
When I try to access this link (th-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=e9gyDAN1DGA) it says no videos found? Do you have a video to show how to change the button color once it's been selected?
Variables are not assisned to object but they can be assigned a value in the action or advanced action triggered by the button. This video is a few years old. I build this sort of interaction a little differently today.
Im so frustrated!!..i keep inserting the variables on the text boxes and whenever i click them in preview it shows the value numbers and the next button wont appear!!!
I wish there was something I could say to encourage you or push you in the right direction but everything you need is in this video. Try again and watch the steps more closely.
@@CaptivateTeacher thank you. I probably have to do it all again. For sure i must be doing something wrong. So sorry for the mini outburst...ive just been stuck on that one slide for 2 days now so you can imagine -_-
No problem,@@icsc87, I wish you luck. One thing I can tell you is that when you get it, you will feel empowered to use some of the more advanced features in Captivate and be an eLearning rockstar.
Variables are simply storage for data. You can trigger the change of those values through some type of interaction, a button or text entry box. The answer is yes but it depends on what you want to do with it.
I tried it, but I must have a minor mistake somewhere that I'm not getting (I have 10 tabs). I purchased and downloaded the version you demonstrate in the tutorial you provided in your comment above to make comparisons between the actions but still can't see my mistake. My continue button shows up immediately and does not wait until after all 10 tabs are clicked. Still looking - I know how captivate is... one teeny tiny mistake can throw off the whole script. If only my eyes would pick up on it. Thanks for this helpful resource, though. It's great!
When you delete an object on a slide with advanced actions, Adobe Captivate will change any lines in your advanced action that reference that object to the Continue action. This can start up playing on your slide when you press a button with that advanced action rather than remaining paused.

Does the order in which you place the actions in the Advance Actions screen make a difference?
+Deanna Seifert yes it matters the order in which the actions are listed is the order in which they are executed.
Hi Paul, thanks that was quite helpful in how to make concise advanced actions. If you have not done a video on using Shared Actions yet, people may find this insightful.
I have 2 queries for your consideration:
I would submit it as a feature request or report it as a bug (_whichever you think it is_) through the *Adobe eLearning Community*:
elearning.adobe.com/
Look for the green button labelled *Bug/Feature Request* on the right hand side of the page.
Hi Paul, I am new to Adobe, Can you please tell me or have a video on how you did the text to the right of the buttons and not let it show?

In each decision I use the conditional "If" like this:
WIll this also work if they can click the button in no particular order?
Yes.
I keep trying to follow the instructions in your video, but captivate has gray'd out the "Change State of" option in the Advanced Actions. How do I fix this?
You must create your multi-state objects before writing the advanced action that will change your objects to the other states.
Hi Paul, I am new to Captivate and I am learning a lot with your videos, thank you for that. I am creating a slide in which the user has to click four buttons first (each one redirects them to a website) before click next, I create the variables and the advance actions but I can link the buttons to that actions.

Please review instructional style from David Anderson and Tom Kuhlman from Articulate storyline...it is aggravating...

(Captivate 2017)
Adrianne
I wouldn't display the next button for the rest of project in this case.
I have followed all steps shown in the video (i believe) and when i click my last button, the next arrow appears just as it should - however, it is not clickable as it should be (and yes, I have the "use as button" checked).. is there some trick I am missing to make my next arrow work as it should once it appears?
nevermind - i realize you have to be in HTML preview mode for next buttons to work!

@@CaptivateTeacher Thanks!

@@CaptivateTeacher Thank you! That's easy. Appreciate the help!
@@kflopilot Yes, visibility and object states aren't retained across sessions but variables are. If you check the values of the variables it should allow you to update easily on slide enter.
Can this be used with widgets?
The problem with widgets is that most of them won't work with advanced actions which is a requirement for this process.

@@CaptivateTeacher Thanks so much for your response! I truly appreciate it!
Hi Paul-
Is it possible to do something similar with the standard captivate playbar?
No not without getting your hands dirty under the HTML / JavaScript hood. Beyond my abilities I'm afraid.
...and actually one of the reasons I don't use the inbuilt playbar. I prefer my controls.
Okay I think I got it to work. Let me know if this solution works for you: th-cam.com/video/tViC26WkgRw/w-d-xo.html
Worked perfectly! Thank you Paul!

Already done! And actually, I do have one more question regarding this tutorial. I fI have a slide that utilizes the drag and drop wizard, is it possible to make the next button hidden until the user does the drag and drop correctly and hits submit?

Paul, I have watched this twice and need to simply hide a button only to be shown upon returning to the slide. There are two other buttons on the slide that jump to other slides, but both those sequences are linked back to this slide. I don't want the button to be seen the first time they come to this slide, but I do want it shown when they come back a second, third, or so on time. Is there a script out there you can point to? Thanks!
You just need an advanced action that counts the number of visits to the slide and increments that counter each time you enter the slide.

Got it! That makes sense - Thank you so much!!

With great pleasure! I could also make a group in our social network with Your videos (referring to this channel) if You don't mind? With Russian subtitles of course...
Андрей Аксенов of course! Anything that promotes my TH-cam channel would be great.
Hi Paul, how do you force navigation such that the user cannot view nor click on later slides unless they have visited the previous slides? I am trying to achieve this functionality in Captivate v8 and have tried replicating many suggestions I've found online.
Would appreciate your advice. Many thanks.
There are some settings in the Table of Contents features that could help you. Watch this video and see if it helps you.
If you still have trouble with this, you can purchase some one-on-one time with me, and I can review it with you. bit.ly/Cp1on1
+Richard Lesh what version of Adobe Captivate are you using? The most recent version is 11.8.1.219. It could be a bug from an earlier version.
I am looking to have the next button enabled after audio on a slide. How can I accomplish this?
Just place it on your timeline to not appear until the audio is completed.
@@CaptivateTeacher smh I was over complicating myself. Thank you! can you share the link to your website? I want to signup for a one on one.
@@Bonbonsito05 Sure thing, you can go to bit.ly/Cp1on1 to find what you want.
Maybe try recreating the project in a new project and if you get it right you can copy it into your thesis project.
hello Paul. Pls Re upload this video. error while watching it (no connection tap to retry. ). thanks
I think the problem is on your end Md.
Hey there Paul,
Thank you so much for all the videos you create!

Sorry should have been th-cam.com/video/e9gyDAN1DGA/w-d-xo.html
Didn't show how you assigned the variable to the smart object button. This is where I am having difficulty.
@@CaptivateTeacher thank you. One question tho...is it possible to assign a variable to an object instead of the text part?
Variables are simply storage for data. You can trigger the change of those values through some type of interaction, a button or text entry box. The answer is yes but it depends on what you want to do with it.
Trying to figure out how to do something similar in Captivate 8. Hmmm
Matt Thompson try this earlier version of the same concept th-cam.com/video/Tz9Fij-ij-E/w-d-xo.html
Thank you.
It's great!
I have tried this several times and when I get to "change state of" It is greyed out and I can't select it
You need to add the additional states you want before you create your actions.
After hiding my next button, my slides seem to want to progress automatically. Did I miss something?
When you delete an object on a slide with advanced actions, Adobe Captivate will change any lines in your advanced action that reference that object to the Continue action. This can start up playing on your slide when you press a button with that advanced action rather than remaining paused.
