An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Ensuring you have a great vacation, business trip, or whatever the hell you’re gonna do - comes down to preparation.

Good stuff, Tim. Being prepared isn’t being scared or fanatical. Most avoid the idea because it’s uncomfortable that evil exists and that it can exist where they are at.

I have been trying to get my son (16yr old) to take things more seriously. Being aware of all the possibilities the world can throw at you. I tried for a year to get him to start Jiu Jitsu with me and had zero luck…. As a last attempt I started listening to Tim Kennedy podcasts around him and he became a fan. Fast forward 3 months and he is coming with me 3 days a week and and is in love it.!!! Tim my next thing I need you to work on is getting him to seriously consider the military. Every male and a lot of the females In my family have served. I’d love for my son to as well. I know your busy but I’d appreciate if your next few podcasts were on how my son needs to serve….😁. Thanks for all you do.

Just remember, serving in the military today is not what it used to be. Vaccine mandates and critical race theory. You could lose your son forever.

The military is like college, it’s not for everyone, but if he looks at it seriously tell him to pick a job he can use out of the military; infantry sounds fun but Air Force cyber security will get him a good paying job after without the bad knees and bad back and Va Claims

Great podcast---as a father/teacher with an RV, we travel a decent amount, this is close to my heart. All I really I have is an axe and knife:) We've been throughout the US and have had zero issues-we've met some amazing, helpful people, but I do want to be prepared....Thanks! It seems to me that the closer I am to nature, the better the experiences.

    • @GD_wolf

That happens to be the case when you’re not in bad locations. Which is 90% of the country. I’ve traveled with my wife during 2020 and 2021. Had zero issues. Honestly. But being prepared and educated is best

I have been a parent for more than two decades and I learned a lot from this! Thank you for having these important discussions and being willing to share what your own families do. It never occurred to me to also have a set of car keys on me when I’m out with my husband. Gah!
I think until recently, we lived in a state of blissful ignorance but age and social circumstances have opened our eyes to the importance of personal protection and family preparedness beyond the basics of first aid and fire escape!

I would love to see an episode on habitual things you do daily, which you wouldn't even think about but there is a particular reason for. i.e. The bit you mentioned about you and your wife always carry a key to the same vehicle. That's probably something so small to you that you'd generally overlook it, but for me it was an absolute gem of advise I hadn't ever thought about, but makes so much sense.

On the note of traveling with kids, we always carry a camp toilet (ie: bucket with snap on toilet lid, bags for it and a light shower curtain for a make shift emergency bathroom). It has proven vital.

I love this podcast, I told my GF about the first one as she is a teacher... I showed her this one as we are new parents. She often thinks I am crazy but after watching this she gets it... Example the other day we were at a restaurant, I was telling her there is one way in and one way out here... she was like Carl stop being silly. I had my back to the wall and was already thinking about breaking the window with my breacher pen if we needed to escape. Btw we are in Britain, we are not allowed to carry anything at all. Sucks.

These podcasts are so informative. Helping to bring light and give a lot more thought to tasks that seem simple until that ONE thing goes wrong. Having you all say these things out loud and bring them to light rather than just read on a message board or some post help grasp it a little more firmly. Thanks for all the great info and keep them coming. I feel a little better and a little more confident in myself and surroundings with my family from the things you all teach. I can only imagine what taking one of your Sheepdog courses would do, and hopefully will be able to sign up for someday.

Because of my background in community mental health, having a ton of friends in military and law enforcement, I’ve always planned for the worst case. I’ve also been in enough situations to know my natural instinct which helps in my planning. I still plan like this with my adult children. I will also use TripAdvisor by reading deep into comments about everything I plan. I spent about 2 hours every night for a week for our trip to Puerto Rico in addition to all other planning. I always purchase additional evaluation insurance but make sure to read the fine print. The only thing I never thought about until I experienced it, from my trip to Mexico was Tarantula season (I never knew there was a season for that) and Tarantula Hawks. I’ve now added animals and insects to that list even traveling from state to state.

It is hard to know how much to protect your child and still letting them have freedom to grow and Learn. But kids mostly don’t realize the danger that is out there. And they think they are invincible. When I was twelve this hit home when a friend drown when boating with his friends and he was a lifeguard. Then a few weeks later a girl was taken from the neighborhood next to mine. We use to walk everywhere and they were not great neighborhoods. But we still thought we would be fine. Because it was familiar to us.

Excellent. I do a lot of planning just for short road trips. Not just for security, but for convenience as well. Are there good places to eat, do they have outdoor seating, is that brewery open on the day we are going, what else is in the area. Google street view is great tool and can give you a feel of the area. My wife found a really nice looking and inexpensive B&B, but the street view of that area showed people lingering in the streets and a cars with a broken windows, I vetoed that one. Keep them coming.

When I got out the Army drove from Mississippi to Alaska with wife and 2 year old girl, in a Dodge B250 high top van with a 318.
318 you can’t kill em. Lost the oil pressure switch out in B.C. Rode 40 more miles into a Canadian NAPA.
Worked 2 weeks in Anchorage, for a Vietnam era Green Beret, then drove back.
On the way back I would lose the bearings on the front drivers hub, every time I stopped for gas. I’d repack it, and exchange the bearings. Couldn’t figure it . From Anchorage to Memphis, every time I got gas change the bearings???lol
Come to find out I was torching the spindle, or the friction from the rotation, was causing the spindle to heat, and swell, stretching the bearing housing.
Then when I would stop for fuel, it would cool, and the bearings would tumble out.

I think traveling is when you are more vulnerable, everything is fun and games, but danger is all around the world, this reminded me the people on Brazil that died because a boat was too close to a rock that fell off over them, you can also avoid tragedies by checking those tours, are they trustfull? are they covering medical emergencies? are they certified?

When my daughters were 6 and 8 I showed them pictures of Frankenstein and Wolfman, Dracula. I told then these aren't the monsters. These are just the weirdos that want to be left alone. Then I showed them photos of Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Berkowitz etc. I then told them these are the monsters you need to worry about.
They carried that lesson with them thru life and still in their late 20s talk about it at Christmas dinner, Thanksgiving "Dad's monster talk" etc. They never forgot that the real monsters look just like you and me and to never just trust anyone ever.
