      I think she meant it generally, not just Sanders; in other words that someone committed to left wing politics often does have to gain real political power, to implement a full programme of policies. If people want to see left wing policies implemented why don't they vote for the most socialist candidate in their constituency, regardless of party?

    • @GlassesAndCoffeeMugs
      @GlassesAndCoffeeMugs ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@kascally Not sure if your question is rhetorical or not, but it's well known that the general voting population does not put policy at the forefront when deciding which candidate to support. Most US voters don't view the political process as a vessel by which you can implement change, but rather a means of preventing the people you don't like from attaining power. And that's just as well, because the elites and the establishment don't want change or to rock the boat or shake things up, so the more they can cause a disconnect in the mind of voters between voting and implementing policy the better. This was the real reason Bernie was utterly unacceptable to the establishment, obviously they don't want their taxes to go up either, but a sustained, grassroots movement of highly informed voters with specific policy goals is a threat to their entire way of life.

      @@kascally Part of the problem is the voting system being "all or nothing" instead of shared power or ranked choice. People usually end up voting for the candidate they believe will win rather than the one they truly prefer. Bernie lost the presidential Democratic primary largely because of this dynamic. The two major parties are afraid of losing power and are resistant to changing the way we vote.

      Right-wing press and politicians ARE the norm, because capitalism is right-wing by definition.
      The fact that we don't use that knowledge and strategize upon it, is far more concerning than her point of view, imo.
      If the left wouldn't have spent decades moaning about the unfair treatment of the media, but instead took that issue and fought it as hard as they could, we would not have been losing for the past 70 years while the right-wing kept degrading our social structures, our societies and our lives.
      Look around in *any* leftist comment section. This one for example. Literally not a single person's rhetoric is problem solving. No suggestions, no calls for action (what action anyway?), no theoretical solutions, ab-so-lu-tely nothing. Instead, all we do is vocalize our observations, and that's it. The same thing goes for the rhetoric of so called leftist channels btw.

    Even if he was stopped from hitting the top, it still feels a gargantuan achievement for someone like Bernie to rise as high as he had in a country like the US. Can only hope some with an equally strong conviction and way or articulating themselves are inspired by him and we get a few more younger politicians in Bernie's mould breaking through in the next few years.

      Many of his ideas eventually made it into Biden's election campaign when Bernie stepped back, too. I don't think you can call that 'failure' as Sophie Ridge is implying.
      I don't know enough US politics to say how much they were implemented, but Biden adopted a lot of Bernie's ideas for sure.

  • @Ahmed-mr4xo
    @Ahmed-mr4xo ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The only time we have had real change is when politicians have become frightened of civil unrest- the last time being over the imposition of the poll tax. If we can't get PR, by not voting for the tories or Labour, then change will only come with mass action. PR is not a magic bullet, but at least politicians would have to actually be much more reactive to what the majority want.

    • @ianoliver3130

      @@ianoliver3130 The main problem with the European elections wasn't PR but the incredibly low turn out of 37%. The current voting system doesn't work, we just get the same shit government with a different coloured rosette, voted in by a minority of approx 20- 25% of the electorate.

      @Steve C
      Bad analogy. Fartage was MSM promoted and given a massive platform within the Murdoch and Rothermere sewers (not to say the BBC). In fact, he served the kleptocracy's agenda very well. He takes pots of money from billionaires around the world, like the Koch brothers (now only one). He is wholly funded by the establishment and he is serving the purpose Bernie pointed out in the interview, to scapegoat so as to channel the anger of people away from his pay masters ( who, more often than not, are also the radical centrists' paymasters). Neo-liberal politics have created the kind of vacuum in political representation that favours the monstrosities of nationalism, fascism, racism, etc. That is, utterly regressive and reactionary politics generated today by the cynicism and apathy in the electorate, and legalised corruption in the political class, neo-liberalism has fostered and cultivated for decades now. Reactionary politics is not 'change', understood as transformation, and it is the opposite of the kind of resistance- transformation politics of Bernie Sanders.
