When I first started listening to jazz and playing the saxophone, I was in love with Paul Desmond’s tone. I have learned a lot about other saxophonists since then, and have grown to appreciate the greats (Bird, Trane, Rollins, etc.), but I cant stop listening to that “dry martini” sound in Strange Meadowlark, Emily, among other great tunes. Desmond has to be my favorite saxophonist.
Favorite modern sax player would have to be Nathan Graybeal, his mario kart lick technique and tonality is exquisite. I also love Charlier Parker and Coltrane!
Favorite saxophonist because of tone and feel is probably Art Pepper, he has a full and round sound, yet really delicate. He conveys so much emotion, but has incredible technique. Also that is the coolest work of art I've ever seen!
My favorite saxophonist is John Coltrane. His sound is unmatched and he was such a pioneer!!! I'm so hype to potentially win that incredible piece of art. Great video as usual!
My favorite saxophonist is one of the og's, cannonball adderly. I love his sound, especially his articulations and the way he bends his notes. Just playing along with him using transcriptions has helped me sound so much better and helped me in my journey to finding my sound
Favorite saxophonist of all time: Joe Henderson. Thanks for the opportunity! Nathan, I think you should try the ReedGeek. It really does give you more playable reeds out of every box. Expensive, but it ends up paying for itself in a pretty short time.
@@AlecDatDude oof, did he not tell her a list of what reeds he uses? oNe dOeS nOt SiMpLy BuY rEeDs!! damn, and im guessing he didn't have any backups either? rip. i mean, even with backup reeds, it feels bad when a really good reed just dies on you the next day.
John Coltrane has my favorite loud jazz sound that I absolutely love, but Stan Getz has this warm tone that just makes me melt every time I hear him play
My favorite saxophone player is Katherine Weintraub. Her recording of the Ingolf Dahl saxophone concerto is utterly sublime and her interpretation is regal yet poignant (yes imma use some big words, what else am I gunna use my college education for). Her tone is so clean and smooth and her technique is next to none. I too like art and am a broke ass college student. PS Your one of my favorite sax channels here on YT
My all-time favorite saxophonist is Cannonball Adderley because he plays some of the most rhythmically interesting stuff I’ve ever heard and his music just sounds so happy
This video makes me so happy! Sometimes I feel like a crazy person when reeds that came from the same box play COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Thank you, Mr. Saxologic
Tbh I don’t have a favorite saxophonist but if I have to say a name it would be Phil Woods. I’ve always loved the way he improvises. His solos just have always felt so melodic and soothing, and a good example is his solo from Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are”. God I love that solo 💜
omg yessss, phil woods is my favorite to. hed amazing, honestly should be mentioned way more. his phrasing is amazing, not to mention his technique is so skilled and perfected, but hes doesnt show off and button mash. truly a master of playing
For me it's got to be Dexter Gordon. His time feel, sound and melodic content are always reminding me that I've got a long way to go, but inspires me to get there. And I mean that picture of him at the royal roost... That just screams jazz.
I say right now my favorite sax player is probably Braxton cook. His tone and style really interest me. I feel like he has brought saxophone in to the mainstream eye a little more and even when he does more traditional stuff his tone and especially altissimo are absolutely insane.
I don't know if I could choose one saxophone player as my favorite of all time, but I would say Terrace Martin has had a huge influence on my sound. His use of effects on his instrument to alter his sound is something I find ✨n e a t✨
I'd have to say my favorite saxophone player is definitely Arno Bornkamp. The way he plays Jacob TV's pieces is beautiful and I love the way his sound fits perfectly with how Jacob writes his stuff
You’re my fav sax player cuz you crack me up each vid bro bahaha. On the real tho Dean Mongerio is probs one of my favs next to Brecker, great vid man!
My favorite sax player is Leo Parker. He died at the age of 36 way back but he made some really good jazz recordings on bari before he did. He’s known as the best sounding bari player of the early-mid jazz era.
My favorite has to be Cannonball Adderley. I love the way he can build melodic lines that also carry rhythmic motifs throughout and to top it all off he keeps the root of his influence alive in his music with awesome blues licks.
This video is sooooo validating for me. Some reeds make me question if I have any musical ability at all. I've had gigs totally ruined by reeds. I thought it was just me being dumb or something. I went through a Legere phase as well. They just don't quite capture that wood sound I love so much. Perfect for outdoor gigs though.
Everything is hard but hopefully it gets easier. Great video keep it up! My favorite saxophone player is Branford Marsalis. He’s got such an amazing sound and seeing him live was incredible .
This has nothing to do with the video but I just thought i should mention that I need to write out an improv solo in 12 hours and it’s about four pages long. I’m a freshman in high school btw. I need help plz Edit: I should probably mention I need to record it as well Update for those who may be interested: I wrote it out and recorded it, and it was pretty decent. This was for an audition btw but Idk how to improv to I wrote smth else instead. I believe results come out either Saturday or Sunday so for those who see this wish me luck :)
Honestly, I love me my Dexter Gordon. He's probably my favorite at the moment. Dude's killer, I love his tone, he's got good lines, and I'm having fun transcribing his stuff.
For the favourite saxophonist, besides Bird himself, I would mention Baptiste Herbin. I saw him play in a jazz club in Paris about a year ago and was blown away. Went to the club for a concert for ~30 euros and the concert was meh. But after the concert there was a free jam session and Baptiste was there. Never heard of him before that evening, but after that session had to listen to his stuff. He was spectacular. I remember him at the end of one song just continuing to play by himself for another minute or so after the rest of the band stopped. That free jam session was miles better than the concert I paid for.
My favorite saxophonist of all time is probably Chad LB. He is just the best of all worlds. I love how pure and unique his tone is. I love how he incorporates bebop with swing and ughhhh he's just so amazing. If you dont know him, you're probably living under a rock, but go check him out. His playing on cherokee with his quarantine band on the Quarantine Standards Album got nominated for a Freaking Grammy. Love you chad and Nathan
Favorite modern saxophonist is probably Josh Redman but I’m a sucker for Cannonball too. They both just have such a strong, rich sound with tons of soul behind it
Fire video man, greens are usually my second to the red cuts. However, to sellout, I gotta say that Paul Gonsalves is my favorite saxophonist. Especially Sugar Rum Cherry, he was ballin' over there. His reedy, buzzy sound is what I tend to replicate when I play tenor in a jazz group.
I did a similar comparison when I was in college with Vandoren Select and Rico.... Out of 20 reeds, I got five I loved out of the box, five I had to really work on and 10 I burned as a sacrifice to the reed gods!! Too fun! And my favorite sax player would have to be John Coltrane! Hands down, the man could play fast, slow, melodic, crazy and smooth! Love his stuff! Thanks for your content!
The older guys are really good but I think that Carlos Eiene is my favorite saxophonist right now. He has a really unique tone and his solos are insanely melodic
My favorite player is probably Chad LB. It was tough not picking an older player, but Chad plays with such an amazing blend of old and new styles. Absolute legend!
My favorite players are Tim McAllister and Otis Murphy! I love both of their styles of playing and how their styles are so unique. Also, Otis's recording of the fantasia (claude t smith) is the best!
My current fave to listen to is Leo P. I had never heard/seen anyone play and dance like him until this year (quarantine YT binge) and he's still blowing my mind.
My favorite player of all time is Phil Woods. I even have his mouthpiece clone by Drake Mouthpieces! His creativity in his playing and energy is out of this world. He also talked in interviews about wanting to bring attention to tunes that aren’t often played rather than just playing the same standards all the time which I find admirable. We are blessed that he was around for much longer than most jazz legends.
My favorite player is/was the granny that used to play the Sax in the inner City of Vienna almost every Saturday sometime around the late '80s, early '90s. Boy was she out of tune but she gave it her all, she made me realize even I could play the Sax.
Honestly most of my favorite saxophonists are already everyone else's favorites so I'm going to give my spot to Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. He was one of the first jazz saxophonists I ever listened to and yeah he doesn't play the most complex ideas but he sure could blow and he blew a sound that was all his own. I'm always shaking my head and smiling when I hear him play :)
My favorite alto saxophonist is Paul Desmond. The lyrical style of his improv just resonates with me in a way no other altoist does. As for tenor, I’m a big Dexter Gordon fan. To me, he is the gold standard of tenor tone; edge when necessary, but nice rich sub tones on ballads.
Paul Desmond. Hands down my biggest influence. Master improvisor, and a liquid smooth sound. He has a more ‘smokey’ sound like you were getting on the D’daddarios!
My absolute favorite player is Cannonball, love his rich sound and his technical ability playing bebop. (Also that posters really cool I’m going to Temple U for jazz next year so I wanna flex it in my dorm room)
Phil Woods is the one player I will never get enough. He's in that spot for me that's like musical home. Was able to meet him when I was younger, he was really awesome. What a sassy, passionate man.
I will go with Desmond as my favourite saxophonist, since I tend to create an imitation of his sound after hearing him for so long, and I'm just in love with his tone. Cheers man
Please compare Lavoz reeds next. Wenzl McGowen plays a 3S on the D'Addario Jazz Selects (on tenor) also. He's probably my all time favorite saxophonist actually.
I've been switching back and forth between Vandoren and d'Addario reeds; I feel your pain ;-) I'd love to see you try out some non-nature reeds, a.k.a. plastic reeds like Legère American Cut, Fiberreed, Forestone, Fibracell.
My favorite saxophonist of all time is Cuban-Born Paquito D’Rivera. I love the flavors of Latin music he brings into his style of playing and I also admire how style of soloing. Although he has been awarded numerous Grammys, I feel not as many people know about him, which is a bit unfortunate because listening to his music is sure to make anyone’s heart dance like he does for mine! :)
I played Java Greens for years until I bought a 10MFan Celebration piece for tenor. Mark didn't seem to think they were a good match so after some research I went to the D'Addario Jazz Select. Great combination for that piece on my Zephyr tenor. Absolutely love those reeds on that horn/mouthpiece. I got a Buescher 400 TH&C tenor a couple months ago and found what plays best on that horn for me is my Claude Lakey Jazz piece with Java Greens.
Eugene Rousseau is one of my favorites, I know most people tend to only think of the saxophone as a jazz instrument but his classical sax techniques are INSANE
My favorite Saxophone player of all time is Sonny Rollins. I know he plays tenor and I play alto, but there's just something about his solos man that I just can"t get enough of.
Hard to choose! Some favorites: Alain Crepin, Tom Hondeghem, and Simon Diricq (I'm from Belgium, where the saxophone originates from, yes I'm biased towards Belgian saxophonists :P) Keep up the good work, don't let the reed madness stick, we've all been there!
I've been playing sax since 1962. Gave up cane reeds for good when I found Legere synthetic reeds. Last for ever, never melt at a hot outdoor gig, consistent performance, and great sound.
I usually play on Legere Signature reeds on my Selmer alto Soloist and Claude Delangle mouthpieces, but on my JodyJazz HR* 5M I use D'addario Select Jazz Unfiled 2H on it and I like them on that as the bit of resistance they have seems to balance out how freeblowing the mouthpiece is. My favourite saxophone player is Paul Desmond for his dry, almost soprano sax like alto sax sound. It was listening to him that inspired me to want to start playing the saxophone, especially when I first heard Take Five which is one of my favourite pieces of music.
For right now, and probably only for a couple more months, my favorite sax player's gotta be Joe Henderson (which is funny because he plays with a lot of air in his sound, sorry). Ayy it changes every three months or so. Also I feel like I should mention that Boston Sax Shop reeds are definitely not overrated and you should try one out of you get the chance - all of the reeds in the box usually play really consistently. Nice video, you sound awesome as always, and good luck with school (and sleep)... :)
To be honest I have a lot of favorite saxophone players! but my favorite classical player is definitely Steven Banks, and my favorite jazzer would have to either be Bird, sonny stitt, or Coltrane for sure. Thanks for all the videos, they always make me laugh and entertain me so so much!!!
I'm a 7th grade jazz tenor sax player and not being biased but I have to say that it's possible that you so far are my favorite sax player. And yes I did subscribe and YES I DID like the video.
I would have to say my favorite saxophone player is Paul Desmond. He’s got such a unique sound and he really makes the jazz he plays, his own. He also plays a lot of cool charts with wack time signatures and I just love it 😂 it may not be the sound I’m going for, but I love the way he does it
For older sax player I like:Art Pepper, Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, Johnny Hodges, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, and Dexter Gordon. New sax players:Eric Marienthal, Ronnie Cuber, Dennis DiBlasio, Jay Beckenstein, Nathan Graybeal, Dave Pollack, Carlos Eiene, and Jay Mason.
My favorite saxophone player of all time is Leo P because he is just outstanding and can really do anything. His style of music combined with the dancing is just magic. Hopefully I get entered in the giveaway 😃
Saxologic you should get a ReedGeek or a Reed stick. They are really good tools that can make your reeds sound way better. basically you use them to scrape away at the surface of your reeds to shape and even out different areas. I use them all the time and they make my reeds a lot less "airy" and "stuffy."

lmao

It’s an outlet for me......
Johnny Hodges is an all time favorite of mine. His quality of sound just blows me away every time!
You hate your reeds? Us bassoonists play on our reeds and say “dang... I made this piece of crap myself”

He also plays a lot of cool charts with wack time signatures and I just love it 😂 it may not be the sound I’m going for, but I love the way he does it
Charlie Parker is really got me into jazz. I remember getting a cd when I was in high school and listening to each track over and over again.
For older sax player I like:Art Pepper, Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, Johnny Hodges, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, and Dexter Gordon.
New sax players:Eric Marienthal, Ronnie Cuber, Dennis DiBlasio, Jay Beckenstein, Nathan Graybeal, Dave Pollack, Carlos Eiene, and Jay Mason.
My favorite saxophonist is a bit generic, but I like that "Dry Martini" sound of Paul Desmond
My favorite saxophone player is hands down John Coltrane. His bright sound and fast articulated notes are just the best combination you could ask for.
I'm proud to say Nate is my favorite saxophonist. Not only because of how cracked he is, but because of who he is.😝🎷
