I wonder why the Pre-Beta has a beeping sound instead of a buzz. It would be interesting to edit the serial number of the earlier protos and see what's the noise. (My theory is that the beeping noise occurs because nothing properly works. A lot of things can be reused for Lock-On Technology, but not code itself. The patch ROM on the S&K cartridge contains all the extra assets needed as well as the entire Sonic 2 code. What I assume is occuring here is that the Knuckles in Sonic 2 code, when patching itself, tries to load all the reusable assets (Like graphics, level layouts, etc.) but fails due to the prototypes not having the same stuff in the same place, and ending up loading garbage data and failing. For the pre-Beta, it fails almost completely and emits this beep. And as the versions go on, the buzzing is probably getting slower as it manages to load more assets before encountering garbage data and resetting. Beta 8 is probably silent because it's almost identical to the final, and is only failing to load in a few places, I don't know.)
It actually makes good sense but my question is why the betas before 7 don't work but 7 does and then why does it go back to it the next and last prototype
1. Interesting... 2. That’s what it looks like when you get a random special stage instead of locking-on Sonic 1? 3. It feels weird not hearing his voice a single time in a video
When I saw that Special stage. I wanted to give it a go. For those who have Blue Spheres Forever game from back then. The code will NOT work (I've tried many attempts to make sure.) You have to remake it in the editor to do it. Just have to find the level in a level generator online to recreate it. I already have and it was decent.
Using the old tool I mentioned in that tweet, I think I got the Beta 7 Blue Sphere stage in everything except Nick Arcade, Simon Wai, and the August 21 prototype. Must be an oddity with the tool I guess
It sounds like the tool is ignoring the very last digit of the serial number? That would make sense if so because then the serial number would match across all of them except for the first three. But it shouldn't ignore it in theory.
Well, the tool is the Sonic & Knuckles Lock-On ROM Creator if you want to go more in-depth with it. It doesn't run under Windows 10, so you'd need a Windows XP virtual machine or something to run it.
Do you mind doing a followup on this with Beta 6B as well as the modified Nick Arcade, Simon Wai, Alpha, and Beta 7 prototypes with the corrected serial of *GM 00001051-00* ?

Sonic & Knuckles on a slightly edited sonic 2 or sonic 3 rom. Talking just a few bytes or chunks shifted, maybe edited object layouts. How would that work?
It wouldn't change anything, most of the actual code for S3&K and KiS2 is actually inside the S&K cartridge. The only thing actually taken from the top cartridge in both games is art and music data. Changing the level design in the Sonic 2 cart would change nothing since it's loading the modified level layouts from the S&K cartridge
@@evdestroy5304 Are we absolutely sure the level chunk data is loaded from the UPMEM chip here? Because as far as i'm aware the actual chunk array data is still loaded from the top game in both S2 and S3 cases.
Very interesting, somone said you could lock-on ''Sonic The Lost Worlds'' with ''Sonic & Knuckles'' but it is false as i've tried it myself. The only thing that loads is the title screen with Knuckles, once you go into the first zone being ''Dust Hill Zone'' the game corrupts and sends you back to the SEGA logo screen.
@@JetPackTails That's the one! I would love to see you review this game someday over on your main channel. No because knuckles isn’t on the ROM of sonic 2 either and idrk how the lock on technology works to affect the cartridge but im guessing the patch is trying to overwrite memory that doesn’t exist or conflicts with existing memory which corrupts the game on startup or something like that
I think the after the constant ear grading sounds, the buzz is the game failing to apply the patch, and trying again, and it gets slower because it manages to patch more data sucessfully before it runs into another error. Just a guess though
