I find it funny that cheap, easy-to-find pirate cartridges can end up rare, expensive, and highly sought after. But seriously, reproductions are easy to make.
God I want those cartridges so bad! These pirate carts alone make the history of Sonic 2 more interesting, what was the game originally intended to be like? These carts are evidence of all that. I consider these carts the Holy Grail of the Genesis/Mega Drive library.
Ive asked this guy I know who makes reproductions of games for nes, snes, and genesis games and he said he could definitely make a reproduction of these. Because the rom is online and he can use it. He said he would start producing them soon, you can find his site here www.ocdreproductions.com/
These aren't real Sega carts. When the Simon Wai prototype was stolen the ROM was dumped onto pirate carts like the one seen in this video by unofficial distributors in Asia and passed off as the final game. They're no "Holy Grail" at all, they're practically worthless.
These were mass produced in factories across china, hong kong and brazil in the early 90's. It's the same thing. This isn't the cart that the original beta code came from. It's simply a pirate cart from the era, and is worth no more than one made now. You can still find these carts on the Brazilian version of eBay to this day. These are pirate carts. Nowadays, we call them "repro carts" for some reason. The only difference between this and "repro" versions is the date of creation and the art. Please stop implying these have any real value.
This is indeed the Wai prototype. I have not found any noteworthy changes yet, however it may be possible it could have some different bytes in the game code. Still need to dump these sometime, as my transfer cable doesn't seem to work even with the right settings.
Can you plz tell me where I can find one? I’ve looked all over the place, and I really want one for my genesis. I’m tired of emulating this crap. Heck, I will even take a friggen pirated copy
That 2nd Sonic 2 cart is definately the beta version which was shown in some Spanish Sonic 2 promo video (The slow music says it all) along with some other beta stuff like Streets Of Rage 2.
Also the slower music is because its an NTSC Cart being played on a PAL MegaDrive and it hasnt been optimized for 50hz just like the 1st Sonic The Hedgehog game.
Not just that, the music in the sonic 2 beta is actually slower objectively than the same tracks in many of the final songs that shipped with the game.
Sweet. Nice pieces of Sonic 2 history preserved - even if they are pirate carts of the retail version and of the Wai proto, I still count it as a part of Sonic 2 history.
The slow title screen music, different Sonic & Tails poses, GHZ background on title screen, and Hidden Palace Zone are still there. The finalized running animation is still a slight change.
If you choose Dust Hill it will take you to Mystic Cave, while Genocide City its true name is Cyber City its map was used for the 3rd act of Metropolis Zone but here in this prototype if you select the zone is completely empty and Sonic falls until he & Tails dies.
These cartridges are very cool I would love to get my hands on one of them despite it being a pirated version because it still the beta of Sonic 2 working on a Genesis when u get down to it.. but of you want to know of ultra rare cartridges the Nintendo 64 dd blue cartridges are super hard. Basically a retail version of the N64 DD was found and was one that would have been sold in us retail but due to the console failing in Japan the canncled them last minute. Those cartridges are being sold on ebay for $2000. Any beta cartridge of anything has a price that people will pay for to get it.
Time constraints for Hidden Palace, Genocide City, Dust Hill, and Wood Zone just didn't work, and Rock and Winter Zone had to go because Dust Hill left.
It'd be awesome if there was like a new reproduction cart of the Simon Wai beta so Sonic enthusiasts could play the beta on their actual Genesises.... or Genesi.... o 3o
Took me just over 5 years to add one of these elusive cartridges to my collection. Don't let the comments below fool you, these are by no stretch of the imagination, easy to come by. Yes, recent reproduction cartridges exists (albeit still quite uncommon) but the first generation of these pirate cartridges are extremely rare. Good luck to all those currently on the hunt. Took me a lot of perseverence to find mine.
I own a ''2 Puzzle Games In 1'' pirate cart with Sonic Eraser and Columns on it. It is very awesome to have Sonic Eraser to play on my Sega Genesis. ^^ If anyone wants pictures of the cart, please let me know. Thanks~

I actually got Sonic 2 Beta 5 and it is much different from the final. There is one thing that makes me think this is fake. The hidden palace music isnt the same as the sound test, this is the mystic cave 2-player final music not even the mystic cave 2-player beta music
It's never actually been established that the unused sound test song actually is hidden palance, we've just assumed that based on context. The music used in the video is consistent with the music Hidden Palace Zone ALWAYS used as far as anyone knows from the Simon Wai prototype.

the music in this video is hidden palace sonic 2 (it's the proto palace music of 2013 mobile re release BTW)
