Muay Thai vs. Kickboxing. The fight that changed the world of MMA

  • The fight Rick Roufus (USA) vs Changpuek Kietsongrit (THA).
    Until the 80s, for people who had never visited Thailand, Muay Thai was a completely unknown martial art. While in Brazil Jiu-Jitsu developed and, according to residents, claimed to be the best battle system in the world. In America, it was believed that kickboxing and karate have no equal. But it’s very difficult to check it since UFC has not yet been invented...

      @Juan Gonzales ... that's under kickboxing rules. Going in close to a Thai fighter under Thai rules will be a good way to get an elbow smashed between your face or pulled into a clinch where they will proceed to remove your pesky ribs via knees.

    • @stevess7777
      @stevess7777 3 ปีที่แล้ว +273

      @Juan Gonzales Are you still failing to put elbows, which are obviously legal in Muay Thai, into the equation? Going in close like you've said so many times will only allow the Thai to get elbows both outside and inside the clinch. As for low kicks, which you say are "the only good defense a Thai fighter has", taking a kick anywhere is much easier said than done according to you. Boxers can't check kicks because they haven't conditioned their shins, and tensing up your leg makes no difference when the contact point of the kick is a hard bone of a shin, not a foot. Spinning will only get your back to end up like hamburger meat: th-cam.com/video/7hGIGI5OhlU/w-d-xo.html

      And yes, through The years Muay Thai has proven to be one of the more effective arts, but no art by itself, is the most Superior way of fighting.

      Yeah, the pain is one thing if you can ignore it, but once the bruising sets in a bit, you lose the normal muscle control and the muscle stiffens as it fills with blood so every further hit is absorbed less and does more damage. It does take a couple of minutes to take effect, that's why he's so much worse off in the round 2. If he sat down at all between rounds, I bet he had trouble getting up.

      The way he tried to dodge them made them land harder too. Quite a lot of the kicks landed after he partially dodged and was off balance with a lot of his weight on the wrong leg. He would have been better off just tightening his leg and taking the hit than jumping off balance and getting hit in a way that made his leg twist around. Its gonna hurt either way, but I'd rather have a massive bruise on my thigh than a shattered knee.

      @Mr. Lumiss The funniest thing is that he actually fought in the streets and got into martial arts because he was bullied and ganged up a lot on. Often he had to fight outnumbered. Because he was only half chinese and even his fellow students tried to convince the master to kick him out for not being full chinese.
      You should really learn the history of a person before making statements like that, it only makes you unknowledgeable and ignorant.

      @Mr. Lumiss you're talking about a guy who died almost 50 years ago. The word of martial arts was at a different place back then. If Bruce Lee were alive today he would be fighting in MMA, and I wager he would be one of the best. That man ate, slept, and breathed martial arts more than most of the fighters in the UFC today, barring a few exceptions.

      @@Jacktoriousrexrex In truth, the purity of most martial arts has been diluted in MMA. I can't think of a "traditional purist" Muay Thai fighter in any MMA organization, but the full range of their techniques(or very nearly so) are permitted by the rules.

    • @TomCox84
      @TomCox84 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      @@Jacktoriousrexrex Muay Thai brings a lot of things to the table which can be utilized in MMA. Muay Thai fighters are very strong clinchers and their kicks, knees and elbows are infamous for a reason (although not all of it is allowed under MMA ruleset). They kick like horses and they have a fearsome mindset/iron will: They keep coming. They're tough, very tenacious and have a lot of stamina.
      That being said, a traditional, pure Muay Thai fighter, fighting only with traditional, pure (Sport) Muay Thai, probably wouldn't stand a chance in professional MMA, I guess. I've never seen it at least. In the end you need to be more versatile than that, fighters need to be experts in multiple fighting styles so that they can fight in all elements (hence Mixed Martial Arts). You need additional stuff for your ground game (brazilian jiu jitsu, judo, wrestling) and some skill in Western Boxing or you won't last long in an MMA fight.
      Edson Barboza's style is an amalgamation between Muay Thai, Boxing, (Brazilian) Jiu Jitsu and Taekwondo. Joe Rogan once said that he considers him as "probably the best kicker in MMA" and it's easy to see why. He loves connecting those kicks over and over again, until he finally sees the pain in his opponents eyes.

There are a lot of things in life that require very low skill and by doing them it allows people to defeat someone who is way more skilled and talented than they are. If you lose to a low skill technique that doesn't say anything about you, it just means your opponent was doing something cheesy. Often times being cheesy and doing something low skill is a GREAT way to defeat someone way more talented than you are. That's the entire point.

Also, since kickboxer had literally all of his moves available, doesn't that mean, at least in the mma sport, that muy thai is superior? Given that only one move was enough to win? Sure, it's not flashy, but goddamn if your martial art can be annihilated by a series of consecutive low kicks, how the hell is your martial art "superior"?
